word. >> how do you do, good morning to you. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> happy friday everyone. we get you started with a developing story we've been following. a major break in the case of missing oakland woman sandra coke. right now authorities questioning a person of interest. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the solana county fairgrounds where search crews are expected to be out in force in a few hours from now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. search teams expected to be back out here this morning at the fairgrounds conducting a massive search. investigators wouldn't say why they're focusing in on the fairgrounds, but we can tell you that a person of interest has been arrested in the case but on a separate charge, on a parole violation. he and 50-year-old sandra coke knew each other. they dated about 20 years ago. coke went missing sunday after telling her daughter she was going to investigate a tip about her missing dog. members of oakland's major crime

unit, the police department left for solana county to search for coke last night. she's a criminal defense investigator. deputies say their search team includes dogs and would focus on lake shib bow, too. the person of interest, randy alana, a high risk sex offender. he has convictions for rape and kidnapping in his past. police say they do have information that puts them together on the day she was reported missing. they were seen later that evening, sunday, all 4th. what we're asking from media and from the public, if anyone saw the two of them together. >> law enforce. from alameda, solana and napa county and fbi all involved in the search for sandra coke. investigators expected back out at 8:00 this morning. live in solana county, christie

smith, "today in the bay." a summer vacation to hawaii turned deadly for a 41-year-old oakland man. police say son vo disappeared while snorkeling in maui. he was reported missing by friends and rescue crews and launched an extensive search by boat and air. his body was recovered early yesterday morning. police say there are no signs of foul play. an accused serial killer on trial in marin county calling his defense witnesses to day. joseph naso on trial for the murders of four women between 1977 and 1994. he's acting as his own attorney. the marin independent journal reporting his list of witnesses includes a formal model he previously took pictures of, a photographer he once worked with, a fellow flea market vendor and retired sheriff's deputy. naso has not said whether he

plans to testify on his own behalf. police have arrested 23-year-old johnny la san know in connection with the killing of 19-year-old kimberly chico. she was in a car in downtown san jose saturday night when someone shot and killed her. police say she was an innocent bystander who just happened to be in the line of fire. they are still trying to figure out why the shots were fired. police say it had nothing to do with chico's friend who was driving the car. police arrested three people in mountain view in connection with a series of blind date robberies. know czar i don't cruise and joseph la rye yus along with a juvenile were arrested yesterday. police believe the men lured their victims into blind dates using a supposed female online to make contact with the unsuspecting suitors. the victims were told to bring cash and meet that woman at a mountain view apartment complex where the suspects allegedly robbed them. police say it's happened at least three times and that investigation is on going.

a gun buyback in san francisco netted 163 guns last night. it was thanks in part to community funding. this right here is video from a previous gun buyback event. the co-owner says $15,000 was handed out yesterday, most raised by donors. the rest was covered by funding from the city. here is an interesting story. a total of 246 schools statewide being flagged for possible cheating, after students shared photo of of starr test exams on social media. they're looking at 16 schools in particular including san francisco's lowell high school, a campus known for its high achievement on state-run tests. the school now facing state investigation. now, the state had to release the results of the starr test this year when the cheating concerns first surfaced. at the time the "contra costa times" reporting tests, questions had been posted online

from a dozen schools including two in san jose, castillero middle school and san jose high. the state says the cheating did not have a significant impact on test results. 5:06. thousands of kids getting ready to go back to school. we'll get much-needed help today. sacred heart community service in san jose is set to hand out backpacks full of school supplies in need. they do it every year. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san jose where they're getting an early start. >> reporter: good morning. this is the 11th annual backpack give away at sacred heart in san jose. the upside is they do have enough backpacks of the children that signed up. children of low income families will come here, pick up the backpack, get school supplies and get a gift card for shoes. the downside is the demand shyer than it's ever been.

jay peco with the sacred heart. demand was supposed to be lower. >> we thought with people getting jobs that numbers would be down. when families came about a month ago to sign up, the line was just as long as during the recession years and during our record year last year. we expanded our program once again, 2,462 children are going to get backpacks this year. >> why is that going against conventional wisdom? what do you think is going on that we're not aware of? >> during recession years, more and more people were coming to sacred heart. certainly our job placement program is having much more success. there is employment for people out there. most of them are underemployed at this time. i was talking with a mom that just was squeaking by after paying her rent. then that almost makes school supplies a luxury. that's the wrong message. the community came together to make sure all the kids have the tools they need to start the school year right. >> you're saying an average backpack supply is around $60.

you translate, the math with minimum wage and that's almost a full day's earnings. >> yeah. when they're already struggling to pay for rent increases and we want to make sure they're buying enough food, it makes it tough to get supplies. things like calculators can be expensive. gift cards for shoes so kids can start with shoes that will last the year, that's why the community came together to make sure the kids are starting the first day of school able to focus on studying and not worrying about how they're different than somebody else. >> jay, thank you very much. that backpack giveaway. the people should be lining up perhaps within a hour or so. around 9:30, 10:00, they give them away. the superintendent of the san jose unified school district will be here as well to help out. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> it's such a wonderful service. bob, thanks so much. great program helping a lot of people. let's check back in with meteorologist christina loren to talk about our feel-good friday.

>> it is feeling so good out there. we've got showers coming down up in the north bay and it's not even fall just yet. we're about 40 days away from the official start of fall. right now at 5:09, we've got plenty of mist and drizzle all across the bay area and your highways are pretty slick this morning. especially take it easy over the open water bridges. we'll get an official report with anthony in just a moment. right now in sonoma county, starting to spread south. you can see not a whole lot of activity, pesky light sales. that will be the case for this morning. then we'll see the sun come out. lit be a comfortable finish, 78 degrees. i don't know if you've had to use your ac in livermore all august so far. today more of the same. 78 degrees for you, 77 in concord and 70 degrees in fremont. kind of cool on the inner bay until about noon today, that's when we'll start to see the sun coming through. we'll take a look at the showers all morning long. can't wait to show you the

weekend forecast. if you're looking for warmer weather, you'll be quite pleased. let's check the drive with anthony. >> things looking good on the roads right now. not a whole lot to talk about. we do have one accident i think it has actually been cleared as far as chp is concerned. you can see as you take a live look. not a lot happening, lots of green on the map across the south bay. the only concern we have right now is through the altamont pass. that's where we have an earlier accident that's been cleared. we're already keeping an eye on that as the sensors are slowing as we approach livermore. there is a stall in san ramon just north of there, getting towards dublin. on the southbound side of 680 that's at sick more valley it's not really impending traffic. you can see things are green and we give that a thumbs up. >> we give you a thumbs up. >> emphatic thumbs up. let's make it two. it's 5:10. how one peninsula city is allowing students to weigh in on what they eat for lunch. >> we'll tell you about the

try new fiber one peanut butter protein bars. it's 5:13. a peninsula school district making changes to the school lunch menu. today students get to try it out beforehand. palo alto unified school district will hold a tasting day with students and parents today. man, when i was back in school, you had to eat whatever they put on the plate. the district came up with 20 new menu options which includes organic and more nutricius ingredients. the tasting day, yes, the tasting day will be held at 11:00 a.m. at jls middle school.

mark zuckerberg's political group has a new goal this morning, the u.s. military. scott, the group wants to push congress towards immigration reform by using patriotism. >> that's right. it features a young man from chicago, top of his class at junior rotc, the highest ranking member in all of the city. the leader of all the students of jrotc, here is the ad itself. he's looking at a war memorial talking to the viewer about his wish to join the marines except his parents brought him to the u.s. as a baby illegally. so he is not a citizen, he cannot serve. u.s. -- non-u.s. citizens serve in the military all the time, the u.s. military. they're illegal, they have green cards, undocumented workers not permitted to join the military even if they are at the top of their class in rotc. a check of facebook trading with bertha coombs at cnbc world headquarters. >> good morning, scott.

we have the futures pointing to a lower start this morning. stocks did manage to stop a three-day losing streak. markets have been spooked this week by comments from several fed officials who seem to say that the central bank will start pulling back on its massive stimulus bond buying perhaps as early as next month if the economic data holds up. the dow is poised for its first weekly drop in the past seven weeks. the nasdaq and s&p 500 are on pace for their worst weekly decline since late june t. dow rising 27 points yesterday to 15,498. the nasdaq up 15 to 3,669. one thing we're watching, scott, is whether there will be any resolution in the time warner and cbs feud. they're apparently back to talking, but a lot of golf fans are really upset in new york and l.a. because, with the pga championship on this week and tyinger in the hunt, they could miss it on sunday if they're looking on time warner. >> bertha coombs, thank you very much.

it's 5:15. silicon valley full of young people with little to their names. have you ever thought to yourself, what if i gave that person $1,000 and they thanked me when they were billionaires. this sunday we'll show you how to do that, give money to young people. there's a system in place called up start to buy shares in young people when they first start work. we'll also talk to a guy who made it big, chourd ray sold his company, 50 of his employees korea became millionaires. he created five more companies, the latest worth a billion. a lot of people asking how did you do it. he's going to tell us on "meet the press." >> got to pay attention. how about this? not so smart. if you're driving a flashy car like a ferrari, maybe you want to be smarter than this. the driver tried to cross a flooded street this reno last

drizzle out there. 59d in sunnyvale, 58 in san jose. here is what's happening. the same system that brought all that rainfall to reno causing that flooded street is bringing very light showers to sonoma and marin county this morning. we have a steady mist and drizzle all the way down the coastline. even if you're waking up with us in san jose, i had drizzle on my windshield this morning. give yourself extra time. if you have to be to work on time, don't let the weather slow you down. wind 11 miles per hour in concord, gusting to about 25, 30 miles per hour from time to time. those gusts could catch you on the open water bridges. keep that in mind. overall we're looking towards another picturesque day. 73 degrees on the way to san jose. 78 in gilroy. getting into the all-important weekend, temperatures will only come up a touch for saturday. by sunday the mid 80s. a great start on monday, 86 degrees. tuesday into wednesday, finally feeling like summertime. it's going to be back, but it's

been really nice for the past few days. >> let's check on the drive with anthony slaughter. >> we have an accident right now. this is actually on the 580 westbound connector at 680 into dublin. you'll notice traffic is not really affected right now. there is debris in the slow lane as you move towards that area. keep an eye that you could run into a little slowdown as you move into dublin. let's get outside and sew what what it looks like. this is the eastshore freeway headed towards the bay bridge approach. lots of lights on this morning. but we are not talking about a whole lot of traffic right now. in fact, in oakland, on 880 northbound you can see things are picking up, but not too bad. even in south san jose we're starting to see cars really filter in. before we check that, we'll show you the bay bridge approach. now we'll take you to san jose and there you can see lots of cars on the roads. of course, folks probably headed in to work a little early to get off on this friday. we'll see you in just a bit. it is 5:19.

san diego police saying the blue versa they've been searching for may be rigged with explosives. they say they found nefd the home that he may have fled with home made explosives. they believe he may have boobytrapped his car, then switched vehicles. they think he's headed to canada. they think he has 16-year-old hannah anderson with him. it is 5:20 right now. the campbell police department could soon be getting a brand new look. the department planning to replace its aging fleet of patrol cars with the chevy caprice. that switch might take a little time to get done because chevrolet is only building those caprices over in australia. most officers currently cruising around campbell in a crown victoria. those are no no longer being built by ford. construction is set to begin on santa clara county's first agricultural park. this is pretty cool.

a groundbreaking ceremony for marshal caudal park. it will have trails, pick nak tables and open grassy areas. most of it used for agricultural purposes to provide food for local markets. the park is expected to open next year. talking about it all week, the big money happening. new details this morning about the winners of the $448 million powerball jackpot. love hearing that. two new jersey officials say 16 workers from this county garage in toms river purchased one of three winning tickets. they will be sharing the lump sum of a nice cool figure, $58.3 million. that is after taxes. a great gig if you can get it. yesterday the winner in minnesota came forward. paul white says for years his family busted his chops making fun of him for always and religiously playing the lottery. now look who is laughing.

square off again in shanghai. this season will mark the second time the warriors traveled to china. the last time that was back in 2008, the year beijing hosted the summer olympic games. >> globetrotters, that's what they are. it's 5:25. san francisco parking officers have another line of defense against drivers who contest their parking tickets. the municipal transportation agency is directing all parking control officers to take pictures of the infractions they find. if someone tries to fight the parking ticket, officers have photographic evidence to justify it. parking officers issued 1.5 million citations in 2011. that's actually down from 2 million in 2005. >> kind of like rubbing it in. they got a big old ticket, here is a picture in case you didn't know what's happening here. 5:25. let's check back in with christina loren to tell us what's happening for the weekend. >> it is going to be nice. it's going to be really nice, especially if you're looking for

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the solana county fairgrounds where search crews are expected to be out in just a bit from now. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. they'll be out at 8:00 this morning searching the solana county fairgrounds, also looking in the lake chabot area, too. investigators haven't said what brought them to the fairgrounds, why they're focusing on this area. we can tell you there is a person of interest in the case. he was arrested but on a separate charge. he was actually being held on a

parole violation. he and 50-year-old san droe coke have a history. they actually dated before, about 20 years ago. police have information that puts he and the oakland woman together on the day that coke was reported missing. oakland police major crimes homicide unit left police headquarters last night headed to the solana county fairgrounds. coke went missing on sunday evening after telling her daughter she was going to investigate a tip about her missing dog. randy alana is the person of interest and has a long criminal history including convictions for kidnapping and rape. coke's family friend still hoping for the best saying she was always the type to reach out and help out. >> she was the kind of person that would help anybody. she had a really big heart. so i don't doubt at all that she would try to help anybody. that's what she did in her work. she helped everybody who needed help. >> reporter: she was a criminal

defense investigator. oakland police will be assisted by the fbi, chp, alameda county sheriffs and solana county sheriff's department. they'll be using dogs as part of their search effort today. that search expected to pick up around 8:00 this morning. live in solana county, christie smith, "today in the bay." also new this morning, san francisco firefighters looking into the cause of a fire at a dry cleaning business that happened overnight. that fire started at golden star laundry near the intersection of california street and 23rd avenue in the richmond district. firefighters say business was heavily damaged and it's likely at this point a total loss. that includes all the clothing inside. we can tell you, too, there are also apartments above that business. no word yet on any damage to those units and so far no injuries have been reported. the owners of a redwood city apartment complex that caught fire last month now being taken to court for that incident along with a new set of claims. the hallmark house affordable

housing complex caught fire on july 7th, displacing almost 100 people. some residents filing suit against the owner of the complex, kdf hallmark fp for lost belong innings, the company was also sued in march by two residents who claim they suffered carbon monoxide poisoning from a clogged wall heater. a judge will get an update on the case's progress today. a big day today in the fight between apple and samsung. they'll be going two rounds today in two different rings. no doubt they're ready to rumble. >> here we go again, jon. two cases. in both cases apple is attacking samsung. the first will be this morning in front of the united states international trade commission, the itc. apple will try to get certain samsung products banned from sale based on the claims that samsung copied apple. now, remember on monday the white house stepped into this fight and absolved apple from an itc ruling against it. the itc had banned certain apple

products. so apple walked away on monday forgiven of its sins, but now it's back throwing stones, if you'll pardon the analogy. it's the best i could come up with. meanwhile, separate case, round two, federal court, apple will appeal the court case that came out in san jose. apple says the punishments against samsung in that trial were not strong enough. we will be watching both of these cases carefully. so, too, honestly will be the south koreans. many feel they're not getting a fair shake. so we'll be watching both the fights very carefully. >> on the peninsula, high school students who had their ap test scores invalidated will start retaking those tests this morning. the first retake begins just before 8:00 a.m. at mills high school in millbrae. you may recall student test scores were invalidated after the testing service cited seating irregularities. students rallied outside the redwood city courthouse yesterday demanding their test

direction, definitely going to at least make for a slow commute this morning. antioch, we do have things not too bad. marla, back to you. >> thank you, anthony. 5:37. it's back-to-school time again. thousands of kids in the south bay are getting extra help to jump start the cool way. bob redell is live at sacred heart in san jose where students will get new backpacks stuffed with school supplies all for free. good morning, bob. >> reporter: much-needed, too. in a few hours children of low income families in san jose, k through 12 will be able to come to sacred heart community service in san jose and pick up one of these backpacks loaded with school supplies. this is about a $60 value. if you're making minimum wage, that's close to a day's wages. it's not very affordable. sacred heart community service wants to make sure these kids are able to focus on their studies instead of worrying why they're different from someone

consulates in the middle east and africa last week. meantime, the u.s. is escalating its drone strikes in yemen. yemeni military officials say as many as 34 suspected al qaeda militants have been killed there in less than two weeks. three drone strikes yesterday alone killed a dozen people. the u.s. and british embassies in yemen were evacuated on tuesday amid growing fears of an al qaeda attack. secretary of state john kerry and u.s. defense secretary chuck hagel expected to meet with russian counterparts in washington. the two will be sitting down with russia's foreign minister and defense minister. they're expected to discuss a number of global and bilateral issues including russia granting asylum to nsa leaker edward snowden. the meeting coming two days after president obama canceled a meeting with russian president vladimir putin scheduled for next month. president obama expected to sign a new bill aimed at

bringing down the interest rate on federal student loans. last month those rates automatically doubled. congress was able to hash out an agreement to bring the rates back down at least for now. the rates will be tied to financial markets, meaning they will most likely rise in the future. we can tell you bay area firefighters traveled down to riverside county this morning helping to fight the massivevhf silver fire near banning. right now the fire has burned more than 14,000 acres. that's an area, to give you perspective here, achb area about the size of sunnyvale. more than two dozen homes have been completely destroyed. firefighters, a little silver lining, they are making progress. at this point the fire we're being told, about 20% contained. that's a big upgrade from yesterday. meteorologist christina loren says the weather will improve for the firefighters. >> cooler weather for them, yeah. probably the hottest part of the great state of california.

two men are behind bars accused of leading sheriff's deputies on a wild chase through san jose. it ended up with one suspect handcuffed on the roof of a popular restaurant. deputies spotted a stolen honda civic near willow glen neighborhood about 6:30. the driver sped off, leading deputies toward downtown. the stolen car crashed into an suv on santa clara street. the passenger was arrested, but the driver ran through the nearby restaurant. a canine was able to track his scent to the roof of the restaurant where he was taken into custody. the owner of the stolen honda civic says he's happy to get the car back. >> i didn't have an expectation, i had hope. i thank my higher power that it turned out the way it did. >> the suspects were arrested for driving and possessing a stolen vehicle and evading officers. no one was hurt. it's 5:46 right now. let's say they are keeping hope

alive, b.a.r.t. and union negotiators meeting again to try to hash out the new contract. the union says if considerable progress is not made today, it will be ish ewing a 48-hour strike notice meaning workers could walk off the job again on monday morning. even if they do issue the strike notice, the governor has the option to step in and order a 60-day koomg off period. that would keep trains rolling through october allowing extended negotiation time. we'll keep you updated on the b.a.r.t. contract talks on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. now, if there is, in fact, a strike on monday morning, we will be on early, one-half hour earlier, starting at 4:00 a.m. right now it's 5:47. san francisco's famous fog made for quite a trip to sfo for a virgin american flight. passengers aboard were forced to make an unexpected flight in san jose. the plane was bound for sfo but
