waters receded it deposited it right here in a parking lot. they are singing a very wet tune in parts of the music city. >> your heart is beating out of your chest because you are so scared. >> reporter: flash flooding forced residents to their rooftops and rescuers into the neighborhoods. >> just covered up everything. about four feet inside the house. >> reporter: up to 8 inches of rain soaked some sections of the city. firefighters rescued more than 200 residents with boats, with school in session those who went to school were safe as buses diverted from flooded areas. >> i screamed at my husband, it's coming in the house, and then it started coming out of the house. >> a rescuer wearing a helmet camera captured video as he captured pictures in tennessee. parts of a trailer park in missouri swept away, more than

100 homes and businesses are now damaged by water that crusted the turkey creek bank. >> there was nothing you could do. >> two days of torrential rains dumped 15 inches, and flash flooding hit parts of georgia where 10 inches of rain washed out several roads. officials say it's too early to know when they will all re-open. wild weather throughout much of the country leaving folks, in a word, miserable. >> i don't know what is going on with the weather these days. it's not good. >> reporter: two dozen people spent the night in red cross shelters, and many more stayed with family and friends. it's going to be a miserable cleanup for a lot of folks here, savannah. >> thank you. al has more on the flooding and what to expect today. >> the folks that don't need it will get more today. we have had over the last week

this dome of hot air, big, hot air pressure, and it rides over the dome and in between the two, that's the battle zone and that's when the severe weather is happening and that's what we are expecting today. as we show you what is going on, we are looking at more rain and thunderstorms, and we have flash flood watches from oklahoma into missouri and arkansas for more rain, and the latest radar shows you showers and thunderstorms continuing to push in, and in fact the flash flood watches extend all the way into the northeast, however, closer to missouri, that's where we are looking at now, the severe weather pushing out of oklahoma into missouri, and the flood zone will see more rain today, about two to three inches of rain before it's all over in the next 48 hours. locally 3 to 5 inches in arkansas and southern missouri, and that rain will expand in the east. we are looking at more flooding rains in the northeast with two to three inches of rain on there and we will have more on that coming up.

meanwhile, the rain would come in handy in southern california where crews are fighting a wildfire. miguel, how sit looking out there? >> reporter: this fire is difficult to see in communities threatened by the blaze, but you can smell the smoke. the wind is whipping the fire in multiple directions, and it has charred more than 15,000 acres and it's active and growing. advancing overnight, slicing across and blanketing the mountains outside of banning -- >> if we could get air support, if anything at all, it would help. >> reporter: the fire threatens 500 homes, and 26 destroyed. >> oh, man. >> mandatory evacuations. you need to evacuate immediately. >> reporter: on thursday, more evacuations, and 2,000 people

forced to flee the flames, and most had little time to leave. >> it singed my hair it caught so hot. >> reporter: this wind whipped out of control inferno has kept 1400 firefighters on their heels, and drought-like conditions here ripe for a firestorm. >> it's dry and receptive to fire and very receptive to fire spread because we are seeing these unique weather things happening that are different than the normal. >> reporter: today as the fire fight enters day three, thousands can only wait, watch and wonder. value and rudy left their home as flames closed in. their community among the hardest hit. late thursday behind the fire lines, we found their home still standing, sharing the good news. >> look at this picture. the house is still standing. >> reporter: no doubt they are among some of the lucky ones,

and the good news this fire is roughly 20% contained and the firefighters are concerned this blaze could make a run towards another community. >> miguel, thanks. let's get to natalie, and she has breaking news on a new terror alert. >> yes, the state department warning americans not to travel to pakistan because of a specific threat to the diplomatic mission there, and nonessential government should leave the consulate in lahore. it's not related to the recent closures in the middle east. president obama will hold a news conference today where he is expected to address the growing tension with russia. chuck todd is at the white house with a preview. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. as you know it will be the first time we will hear from the president since the decision by the white house to snub vladimir putin in russia and not attend a summit there in moscow, and we

good morning, everyone. more rain will add to the misery today in parts of the south and midwest already hit by flash flooding. firefighters had to rescue people from the roofs of their cars and homes thursday in nashville, tennessee. flood waters also damaged roads in georgia. and overflowing creeks in missouri washed away trailer homes and claimed at least two lives. new evacuation orders were issued today for hundreds of people after a southern california wildfire doubled in size to 14,000 acres. the fire started wednesday in the mountains about 90 miles east of los angeles. it has already destroyed at least 26 houses and other buildings and is threatening hundreds more. ncaa says the website will stop selling player jerseys and other memorabilia linked to individual schools. however, it will continue to market generic ncaa apparel. the college sports organization is under scrutiny for some of its merchandising practices. it's also being sued by some former and current players over the use of athlete images and

but first the bitter custody fight between a 3-year-old's biological father and her adopted parents. here's kristen welker. >> reporter: she is only 3 years old but for most of her life two families have been fighting to call her their own. she lives in oklahoma with her biological father and his wife robin. >> i'll fight until i have no more fight left in me. >> we are not giving up on her ever. >> reporter: but for her first two years her home was in south carolina with her adoptive parents. the bitter custody battle started in 2009 when veronica's parents split up. her biological mother asked brown to give her custody. brown agreed writing in a text message i think that i will just sign my rites away and he later signed the paperwork. about to deploy to iraq, brown said he never realized his daughter could be put up for adoption. >> i never knew what i was signing. i just thought that i was just signing, you know, for her to

have full custody, you know, be able to make all the right decisions for my daughter while i was gone. >> reporter: in 2011 a south carolina court ruled that brown who is a member of the cherokee nation should have custody of his daughter under a federal law which seeks to keep native american children with their parents. >> the case went to the supreme court that ruled that the federal statue did not apply. >> because he had not been a part of the child's life he was not entitled to say the child is deprived of his heritage. >> reporter: they ordered brown to return veronica but he did not show up with her siting his national guard training. now the court is demanding that brown hand her over immediately. all of this with veronica turning four next month. >> there's no doubt in my mind that i'm not going to be there. i'm going to be there for my daughter's birthday. >> we missed her third birthday but we don't want to miss

anymore birthdays. >> right now all that's sure is both families will face-off again next week in court. for today, kristen welker nbc news washington. >> well, her adoptive parents are with us now along with the attorney for the biological mother in this case. good morning to all of you. >> good morning. >> when was the last time you saw veronica. >> 19 months ago when we had to hand her over. >> you had her for the first two years of her life. >> 2 1/2. >> so it's a complicated legal back story. we got into it a little bit but the bottom line is you won in court. you won in supreme court. there was supposed to be a hand over of veronica back to you. matt, what happened. >> nobody showed. they could have asked for a different time, a different date, but none of the attorneys did in court. so we assumed that he was going to show but now i guess we just assume that they knew all along he wasn't going to show. >> he had national guard duty.

do you believe that that's the reason he didn't bring the child. >> well, again, they could have offered a different time and place and they didn't and someone else could have brought her. that was very clear, a proxy could have brought her. so i'm not sure they ever planned to come. >> it is a complicated legal backdrop. as we just heard in the piece, he says he didn't need to sign over his parental rights he didn't know the baby would be adopted. what do you make of that? >> well, the first thing i would say is this case has been fully litigated and that has been of course part of the legal and factual inquiry all the way up to the supreme court and back. the fact of the matter is that he doesn't even contest the fact that he was fully prepared to and aware of the fact that he was giving up all parental rights. it's just that he expected veronica's birth mother to raise veronica herself. you know, veronica had been born for months and months and months

by the time he learned of the adoption and the reason for that is that he was out of their lives. she was pregnant, you know, pacing an unplanned pregnancy, a single mom of two. and she had to come up with a plan for her child. >> let me ask you about veronica because in family court they always say it's the best interest of the child and i assume that is what is most important to you. do you worry about this transition? she was with you for two years. now she has been with the biological father for 18 months. do you worry about if you get her back, how you will manage that? >> i mean, we obviously want it to go as smooth as possible. we don't want any trauma. they gave us an hour and a half. or her an hour and a half. we're giving her five days. or that was the plan. >> they cutoff all communication. we never got to see her, talk to her, she didn't know what had happened to us and we don't plan to do that with her.

and that breaking news right now is under way on the east coast. three people are missing, including two children, after a small plane crashes into a couple of homes in connecticut. check out this video from the new haven register. it shows the moments just after the crash that happened about two and a half hours ago. this is in east haven, connecticut. the plane crashed into two homes as it was approaching the new haven airport. the mayor of east haven says the missing include the person on the plane and two children in one of those homes, ages 1 and 13.u7 the city's fire chief says they presume there's going to be a very bad outcome. and i quote. we will continue to keep an eye on that story four.
