"early today" starts right now. >> announcer: this is "early today" for monday, august 12th. >> good morning. i'm richard lui. we begin with the dramatic end to a week-long manhunt. the search for a man who abdubted a teenager is over.

hannah anderson has been reunited with her father. jay gray has the latest for us. >> reporter: a group of horseback riders were the first to spot james lee dimaggio and hannah anderson in the back woods on thursday. >> then when we went up the trail a little ways i told these guys, there was something wrong. this wasn't right. >> reporter: it gave searchers a place to focus their search. after spotting their camp site from the air federal agents hiked 2 1/2 hours through the rugged terrain and moved in. >> they waited until the two were separate and ensuring hannah's safety and that's when they moved in to make that safety. >> dimaggio was shot and killed in the showdown, ending a week-long multistate manhunt for a suspect investigators say kidnapped anderson after he brutally murdered the 16-year-old's mom and brother whose bodies were found in the rubble of his burned out san diego home last yeek. anderson was rescued and taken to a area hospital to be

evaluated and reunited with her father. >> i'm excited for my son who gets to have her at least. he lost his wife and his -- my beautiful handsome grandson. we're going to have hannah back, and we are. and that's the good thing. >> we'll get through it. we'll help hannah through it, whatever it takes. >> reporter: while also facing the painful reality of having to bury her mom and little brother. jay gray, nbc news. new criticism on president obama's dealings with russia's president. he abruptly canceled a planned meeting with vladimir putin after asylum was granted to edward snowden. some republicans say it's not enough. danielle leigh joins us from washington. good morning to you. and how would critics like the president to respond here? >> reporter: richard, good morning. critics would like to see the president really strike a balance as he tries to restore the public's trust, but also protect national security. even while vacationing on martha's vineyard, president obama couldn't escape a moment

of apparent frustration on the golf course. back in washington, more troubles await the commander in chief. lawmakers are criticizing the president's plan to increase oversight of the nsa surveillance programs exposed by leaker edward snowden. >> he's failed to explain these programs which are lawful, which have saved lives. >> we need to do better in educating our public so they are not fearful that we, the government, are violating their privacy. >> reporter: the former director of the nsa warned added oversight could hurt a key part of the program, moving quick three protect national security. >> so you need to be careful about how many processes you put in there. >> reporter: the leaks seem to have pushed u.s./russia relations to a post-cold war low. ever since snowden obtained asyl num the country. president obama has canceled a meeting with vladimir putin originally scheduled for next month. some lawmakers want a stronger gesture. >> mr. putin does not have united states/russia relationships in any priority,

and treat him in a realistic fashion. that's the way to treat mr. putin. not just canceling a meeting. >> reporter: snowden's father continues to defend his son who he is preparing to visit in russia after recently securing the papers he needs to travel. some analysts say the president shouldn't be tougher on russia but should instead try to restore that relationship. especially as the u.s. confronts unrest in syria and egypt. i'm danielle leigh. richard, back to you. attorney general eric holder is looking to change the way some drug offenders are punished. today the attorney general will direct federal prosecutors to move away from the severest mandatory sentences. this decision will impact only those found to be low level, nonviolent drug offenders with no ties to gangs or large-scale drug organizations. suspects will be charged with crimes that specify a range of months or years. this gives judges the ability to decide sentence lengths. the justice department says the goal is to reserve the harshest penalties for the most violent

drug traffickers. it looks like a vacation is over for guests at one florida resort. early this morning the summer bay resort in central florida was evacuated because parts of the villa began sinking into the ground. officials estimate the sinkhole to be about 40 to 50 feet in diameter. they are not sure if the hole is getting wider, but they say it's getting deeper. 20 people were staying in the villa. they're all accounted for. witnesses heard a loud cracking sound as the villa began to sink. authorities in central colorado are still searching for a woman seen clinging to a tree during a massive mud slide on friday. water gushed at almost 30 miles an hour pouring down highways and residential streets. at least one person was killed. about 40 cars were swept up in the river of mud there. nbc's dylan dreyer joins us right now. we look at that. i understand they had a dry spell. so that might affect what's happening today. >> a dry spell and the waldo canyon fire about a year ago. so when you don't have that

vegetation, there's nothing to absorb the water and you end up with dangerous and deadly mud slides. more rain is possible in that area. this monsoonal moisture continues to stream in from the south. so there is the chance that we could see heavier downpours. also along a stalled front that is bringing flooding concerns to portions of the plains states and also to the midwest. but today, our biggest threat of severe weather will be across parts of kansas and into northern oklahoma. biggest threat, torrential downpours, hail and gusty winds. we're seeing nothing but sunshine from seattle right down into southern california. naturally for this time of the year. 103 in las vegas. 108 in phoenix. mid-70s in seattle. boise, about 93 degrees today. salt lake city around 96. so the heat is starting to spread eastward. but take a look at seattle's forecast. during the next five days, this entire week, partly cloudy. upper 70s to lower 80s. so the weather certainly looks fantastic out that way and doesn't look like rain is going to show up any time soon.

that goes for most of the west coast where things are nice and quiet. even keeping an eye out in the pacific, as for the tropics, there is a couple of storm systems moving to the south of hawaii but those don't look like they'll be any threat to land. that's a look at the weather across the country. now here's a peek out your window. seattle again about 76 degrees. pendleton, oregon, could see an for sure. >> taking the prize so far this summer, the northwest. >> go figure. >> you would not figure, absolutely. just ahead, we'll go live to cairo as egyptian police vow to crack down on protesters there. plus a 12-year-old boy's gem of a find worth thousands.

for a possible confrontation as early as this morning. tens of thousands of supporters of egypt's ousted protest are staging a sit-in. youssef gamal el-din is live for us. how does it comfire the days when morsi was pushed aside? >> reporter: richard, it does prove to be quite similar and also quite different. when morsi was forced aside, you had the confrontation between the pro and anti-morsi people and now, though, it's more a confrontation or likely to be one between security forces and supporters of the ousted president. now you mentioned the encampments continue. remember that today is the first day after a religious holiday weekend. and that is why we're getting a flurry of reports that security forces may be just around the corner in terms of breaking up these protests. now they are, of course, sitting there with barricades, with

improvised weapons as well. they are ready for battle. and they say they are not going anywhere. now here's the thing. there's a lot of pressure from the international community for no further violence. so we could see perhaps the government employ some fresh tactics such as cutting electricity, for example. where we would see this being a gradual drawn-out process until the protests actually crumble up. richard? >> thank you, yousef gamal el-din live for us in egypt. here's some other stories we're watching. over the weekend the u.s. reopened all but one of the embassies that were closed due to recent terror alerts. the one in yemen is the only one still shut down. an estranged father in new hampshire shooting his young son and then himself at a ywca on sunday. the man and his 9-year-old were at the "y" for a supervised visit. officials said he'd made previous threats against his own son. a 2-year-old rhode island boy has been found in good health after officials issued an amber alert.

he was found shortly after police arrested two suspects in connection with a double murder at his house. northern california, bay area rapid transit riders can breathe a little easier. a san francisco judge ordering a 60-day cooling off period for talks between b.a.r.t. management and its unions. that decision was made over the weekend. it keeps b.a.r.t. running until at least october. if you looked to the skies early this morning you may have seen the perseid meteor shower. close to 100 meteors are blazing through the sky each and every hour. and a boy on vacation is now the owner of a 5.16 carat diamond. it's about the size of a jelly bean. the 12-year-old was searching in arkansas'rater of diamonds state park. it took less than ten minutes to find that brown diamond. it's the 27th largest ever found in the park. no word on exactly how much the gem is worth but some reports put the value in the thousands. better news at the pump for

you over supplies causing prices to fall. the average price for a regular gallon of gas falling about 8 cents in the past two weeks to $3.60. so for more on business now, we turn to cnbc's seema mody. good morning. >> richard, the market comes off a down week with the dow snapping a six-week winning streak. investors will get data on retail sales, inflation, manufacturing, housing and the consumer. in other news, u.s. authorities are reportedly considering the rest of two former jpmorgan employees for their alleged role in hiding the bank's massive trading loss last year. reports say the u.s. is seeking to extradite the two men from london. mark your calendar. apple is reportedly set to unveil the next iphone on september 10th. the smartphone would hit stores in time for the holiday shopping season. back to you. >> a lot of big expectations for that phone. one of the largest and most iconic fireworks displays in the world. plus how usain bolt did. was he able to regain his title in sports headlines.

switzerland was bursting with one of the world's biggest fireworks displays. the 66-year tradition drew in over 500,000 spectators. the display marked the end of summer with a reported 25,000 fireworks there. let's turn to sports now.
