good monday morning to you. 4:30. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning. new this morning, a deadly crash in santa clara county involving a party bus from san francisco. police say another car and that bus slammed right into each other, sending the bus careens down an embankment. the trouble is when police arrived, the bus driver was not there. this all happened on northbound 280 late last night south of the alpine road off-ramp. that is where "today in the bay's" marla tellez is right now currently gathering more information. she will have a live update coming for us at 5:00. right now let's see how that's affecting traffic, checking in with mike. >> horrible way to start the day with that information. let me put it into the traffic context. we're looking at 101 in palo alto. a very light volume of traffic as you travel past the headlights. the map will show you this area for 101.

you saw how light the traffic flow is there. this is a little farther north on 280 which is more sparsely populated. the issue is three of the five northbound lanes are currently blocked. we expect things to be clearing up. they're getting the latest details. with three out of five lanes, even a slight bump up in traffic will cause some slowing. no slowing except for right at the immediate scene with those lights. so 280 is all right north of woodside. it's a smooth drive as well as you're heading toward the bay bridge. sounds like that has cleared up. christina, we're talking about the start of the work weak. >> looking better now that you're back with us. no b.a.r.t. strike in case you different get that information over the weekend. temperatures this morning are really comfortable. 56 to start you off in concord, 57 in livermore. the big story in the weather department is our stretch of

fantastic weather going to come to a screeching halt as we head through the end of the week into the weekend. we're talking about a heat wave, triple-digit plus, near record temps. i'll break it down for you, show the timeline for the changes. there's a meteor shower happening. we'll talk about better viewing for that guys. 4:33. happening now, a sinkhole opened up overnight in the middle of a villa at a florida resort just miles from diz any world. summer bay resort, about ten miles west of disney world in clermont, florida caused it to collapse. another section of the building is also sinking. the building was evacuated after guests heard popping noises and windows began breaking. no injuries reported. attorney general eric holder

set to be in san francisco this morning, expected to announce major changes to the criminal justice system. holder speakingali at the ameri bar association's meeting. nbc bay area has a preview of its speech, which will feature scaling back harsh prison sentences for some drug-related crimes. it will also release some elderly non-violent offenders. he says the u.s. can't incarcerate or prosecute our way to becoming a safer nation. coming up at 5:00 this morning, bob redell will have more details on the attorney general's plan. also attending today's conference, former secretary of state hillary clinton. she's the guest of honor where the aba will be recognizing her for her legal career and helping in advancing women lawyers. clinton worked in private practice in arkansas and graduated from yale law. she also worked as a counselor in the house judiciary committee

during the watergate investigation. the giants are looking at surveillance game. center fielder adam jones says a fan threw a banana to him. it happened after he hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth. after the game he tweeted about the incident. i want to thank whatever expletive through that banana my direction to me --. there were no in-house radio calls about the incident. the park is revealing surveillance footage and will continue investigating today. it reminds that throwing things tont field are grounds for ejection. san jose police trying to figure out exactly what caused a deadly crash, killing two teenage boys and injuring three others. we have video here taken by somebody who lives in that area

right after saturday night's crash. the police are looking into whether drugs or alcohol may have been involved. the car was reportedly speeding down chenoweth avenue when the driver lost control and slammed right into a tree. loved ones say 19-year-old fabian perez and 16-year-old sal fernandez died in that crash. >> he was funny, always smiling, always joking with me, always a cheerful person, someone that you would want to be around. he was a wonderful person. for this to happen, it's devastating for us. >> police say three other teenagers in that car also suffered critical injuries, but they are expected to survive. 4:36. survivors of the asiana airlines crash that crashed at sfo will get an additional $10,000 in compensation. the 288 passengers who survived

the crash are eligible for the payment, but the carrier may be told to pay more. three teens from china dieing when the boeing 777 struck the seawall at sfo on july 6. negotiations between b.a.r.t. and its unions stalling all over again. the silver lining, the trains are still up and running. today is the start of the 60-day cooling off period ordered by governor jerry brown. that means b.a.r.t. will run as scheduled until at least midnight, october 10th. contract negotiations did resume yesterday, but they broke down after a few hours. both sides say they're about $50 million apart in negotiations. if no deal is reached by the end of that 60-day cooling off period, workers will then have the right to strike at any time. 4:37. san mateo county getting tsunami sirens along the coast today.

taking a live look outside this morning, pretty start to the day for a monday, right? we'll help you get through it. 4:43. this morning las vegas police are investigating an officer-involved shooting outside a hotel on the strip. off-duty detective was off the ex-calibur hotel when a man got into the driver's side of the car. according to the los angeles review, the man ordered the man to get out and identified himself as a police officer. when the man reached under the seat, the detective opened fire and hit the man in the wrist. the detective is on standard paid administrative leave. the man who brought us tesla, paypal and spacex promising to reinvent high-speed travel. billionaire elon musk is expected to pull the curtain off his plans for his hyper loop transportation system, something he promises will be twice as fast as an airplane, cheaper

we've been promising you a return of the summer heat. you'll probably notice the difference as of this very morning. 62 degrees in sunnyvale, 57 to start out in livermore. temperatures are really comfortable out there right now. this is the time, if you're waking up in livermore, concord, get out as early as you can. temperatures will be much warmer today. we're seeing the southerly surge. as we head throughout the afternoon, temperatures return to the mid 80s by tomorrow, the upper 80s. the 90s. by the end of the week and the weekend, close to trip -digit heat and likely seeing it continue into next week. for today, not too bad. this is one of the coolest days in the extended period. we stop the clock. between 6:00 and 10:00. mostly cloudy conditions just at the immediate coast. otherwise we're looking really good for today. 86 on the way to livermore. 74 in fremont and 78 beautiful here in san jose. as we head through tuesday to

getting closure from now on. >> we're also learning more this morning about the tip that led investigators to james dimaggio and hannah. a group of horseback riders noticed the two on thursday. they noticed something didn't quite fit and called police. >> she was -- kind of had a scared look on her face when i first come up the trail. we didn't know if it was from the horses or what. >> the amber alert was on the television, and i told my wife, that is that girl we seen on the mountain. >> sharp people there got it done. one of the riders is a former county sheriff who says he was puzzled by the lack of gear and the fact that neither was wearing hiking boots or rain gear. federal agents hiked about 2 1/2 hours through rugged terrain and waited until the two were separated and moved in. dimaggio was shot and killed in that showdown in a multistate manhunt for the man accused of kidnapping anderson and killing

her mother and 8-year-old brother. 4:49. this morning the trial of major nadal hasan is set to resume after 40 witnesses describe how he carried out the shooting rampage at ft. hood. hasan sat silently in court except to raise a few objections and question two witnesses. the army psychiatrist is facing charges of premeditated murder. if convicted, he will face the death penalty. the fbi is investigating this morning trying to yig your out what sickened two workers at jfk international airport. more tests will be conducted at a lab after a package containing muni supplies shutdown portions of the airport. it tested positive for bx, one of the most potent chemical weapons known to men.
