very first look at dramatic video of a u.p.s. cargo plane that crashed and exploded out there not far from the birmingham airport. there are reports, you can see, several explosions going on following that crash. right now we're hearing crews, they're being told to stay back because the conditions there are just too dangerous at there is time. "today in the bay's" marla tellez joining us from the newsroom. quite a scene there. >> it is, jon. the latest information from the mayor of birmingham who tells nbc news the pilot and co-pilot on board at the time of the crash and at this point, no comment on their condition. we are still waiting for u.p.s. to make an official statement. i want to show you new, amazing pictures into our newsroom. it shows immediate aftermath when the airbus 300 u.p.s. cargo plane crashes in a field outside of birmingham shuttlesworth international airport where it was set to land. this happened about 6:00 a.m. local time. so about an hour ago.

the u.p.s. plane coming from louisville, kentucky. the mayor says priority right now to get the fire out. you can imagine that the fire personnel on scene very intense situation. we are hearing from our nbc affiliate wvtm that explosions continue to rock the area. jon, as you mentioned, media on scene has been told to move back as emergency crews say the debris field spans a half mile and is extremely dangerous. within the last 15 minutes, ntsb is launching a full go-team to investigate the crash. the team set to leave d.c. in two hours and will arrive in birmingham, alabama, at 10:00 a.m. local time. that is latest. this is a very fluid situation. i'm monitoring the wires and checking in with nbc affiliate. i'll check back with you in 30 minutes. >> thank you. 5:02. happening now, tensions high in egypt this morning after

violence erupted on the streets of cairo. live pictures just coming into your newsroom. egypt's health men ministry said at least nine protesters killed. the violence started when security forces moved in to clear two protest camps for supporters of ousted president morsi. police seen firing tear gas and removing roadblocks. one of the camps cleared and is under police control. protesters being moved oust a second camp. a fairfield man accused of intentionally drowning his father's dog expected in court today. set to be arraigned for animal cruelty as well as probation violation. investigators say he repeatedly pushed his father's pit bull terrier under the water at a city pond monday morning. that dog drowned. police say cavanaugh admitted to doing it but say his doesn't know why.

cavanaugh was already on probation for assault with a deadly weapon. today martinez boy undergoing another round of surgery after mauled by a pit bull. his name, 10-year-old hunter killborn, attacked back on sunday while visiting a friend in antioch. he was rushed to uc davis trauma center on that night where hehood has a first surgery. the pit bull knocked him down, bit him in the face and on the arm. the dog currently is under quarantine. investigators say if the owner does not agree to euthanize the dog, a hearing will be held. >> two people killed in i small plane crash that sparked a brushfire north of sacramento, that plane went down 11:30 in the town of paradise, five miles east of chico. the crash caused a bushfire that charred 15 acres. two bodies found inside that burned out wreckage. remains have not been identified, and the cause of the crash is under investigation this morning.

a man's dream of helping blind people ride bikes has been put on hold because of a thief. brian higgins says somebody stole his $3,000 light speed titanium bike. higgins, who is 98% blind, using his bike as part of a research session to help other blind people get around. he has invented ultrasonic sensors placed on top of handle bars to help people know what is in front of them. but without his special bike, his research has been called off. >> i'm going to have to really do some soul searching and sort of decide what i want to do from here. but i think that's what was taken away from me, more than the bike. >> higgins now says he may have to buy a cheaper bike sometime in the future. with proper funding, he says he's two years away from finishing his research. >> right in the middle of doing something to make a difference. >> let's hope somebody has a

i'll show you when temperatures soar in your seven-day forecast ready to go in my next report. first a man who knows the drive's going to heat up. heavier expected. >> there's a shift today and next week. more schools kick into effect around as well. a bump up later on in the commute as folks drop off kids and hit the roadways. 101 heading to the freeway on ramps later time, congesting things until everybody sorts out their morning. keep that in mind. here 101 moves smoothly through 680. no slowing right now. but again watching that shift. be careful as you're passing by school zones. heed warnings and watch crossing guards as well as flashing lights on buses. through the tri-valley, smooth drive. they don't start school until next week. smooth drive lieu livermore, dublin. slowing out of the altamont pass kicking in on schedule for wednesday. there's the slowing into

livermore before you get to greenville when you ease a bit. live look at oakland and coliseum, volume just picking up a bit and farther north slowing in both directions between 980 and path. that has cleared up as crews have moved out of the roadway. we have construction approved just northbound past 23rd, guys. >> well, a lot of families in the south bay are waking up earlier this morning as kids head back to school. today the first day of class for san jose unified school district. "today in the bay's" bob redell live at trace elementary school in san jose where students will be showing up in a few hours. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. if you look at all of the bay area school districts a marathon over the next couple of weeks of schools starting back up. east side union school district they started it off -- east side unified school district started off yesterday. san jose unified today. august 28th that he when the last district will start going back to school, districts like

san mateo, foster city, fremont august 28th. if you're a kid you've got the extended summer. what makes this school year different is that this is when the state will start implementing common core standards. over of the past few years 45 states including california adopted standards, same standards for english and math, benchmarks for what skun benchmarks for students know know after each grade. students generally perform better than american students. in theory aum students here in the united states who go to schools with common core standards get the same education even if they were to move to another school as long as it's in the state that adopted the standards. standards are controversial because they do represent such a change and they do require teachers to receive training throughout the year. "new york times" says it's,

5:12, corporate raiders. >> carl icahn shows up from time to time. last time he was in town he bought lots of shares of yahoo! and by the time the dust settled jerry yang was out of a job. icahn tweeted and said he talked to tim cook on the phone. we're not sure how much stock he has. bloomberg says it's more than $1 billion whatever it is it's enough to get the ceo to take your phone calls. when people like icahn buy shares in companies like apple it's for one of two reasons. one they think the stock is undervalued, two, they think they can make some change that will force the stock to go higher. in apple's case, he wants apple to borrow money to buy back more of its stock which increases the value of shareholders' shareholdering including mr

hot one. so spoiled this month. you didn't have to run your ac possibly until yesterday. i certainly kicked my on yesterday in campbell. we only hit 86. 97, yeah, a hot day in places like concord yesterday. today it's going to be warm. in the south bay and east bay, you're going to get the best weather at coast. starting out clear in san francisco. that means you'll hit 70 in the city. 65 at 9:00 a.m. if you're sending kids back to school, you want to leave them a light sweater or jacket, depends how sensitive they are to the cold. i was okay without one this morning. temperatures going to climb after 6:30 a.m. once we get that sunrise. 87 degrees is the forecasted high in san jose. that's a warm day for us. 90 gilroy. and 95 degrees in livermore where it'sage for this time of year 87, 88 degrees. we're going to continue to see above-average conditions for the next day or so. and then temperatures are going to start to moderate friday into

saturday. we climb and next week, looking like a strong stretch of heat. talking about a heat wave starting sunday and that kicks in as we head through monday into tuesday. look at that, mike. 100 degrees inland. >> she did it. fit three digits on this. more cars into the bay bridge toll plaza and we over the course of the morning. right now light flow. all except for one cash lane is open. east shore freeway, i look from the camera, volume good. as schools come back in session, one big one of note, cal get back in session. starts the 24th, 25th orientation, first session starting with students coming into the area going to start about now over the next week and a half. so, we're going to watch for more congestion for city streets and the change in the flow as you get on to and off of the east shore freeway. now it's fine there. the focus not here north through oakland but also going to focus heading south through the south

"today in the bay's" marla tellez joining us from the

newsroom. breaking details. scary scene. >> across the wire, rigeuters reporting the only two crew members on the airbus 300 are confirmed dead. this is the pilot and co-pilot for flight 1354 which left kentucky and set to land at birmingham international. let's take another look at these dramatic, unbelievable pictures coming from the scene. this is a scene outside airport property where the plane went down. u.p.s. has just released a statement saying is it determining the details of the crash and says, quote, as we work through this difficult situation, we ask for your patience and that you keep those involved in your thoughts and prayers, enquote. this happened 90 minutes ago, about 4:00 our timing this morning. faa official describes the area as open land with no homes on the property where the plane went down. the plane was coming from, as i

said, louisville, kentucky, set to land at birmingham. emergency crews working hard to contain ferocious flames that make up the aftermath. despite this unfolding close to the airport, faa says it's not affecting flight at birmingham international. 7:30 in alabama right now. the ntsb says its first investigators will be on scene 10:00 a.m. local time. ntsb holding a press conference in virginia, arlington, virginia at 6:15 our time. when that happens, we will bring that to you live. 5:32. another 45 minutes or so. >> thank you for monitoring that for us. happening now, violence erupting in the streets of cairo. live pictures right now as you see. the activity continues. egyptian security force tells nbc reporter there, four egyptian policemen killed, 12 injured so far. they are still taking to the

streets to try to concontrol violence. that started when security forces moved in to clear two protest camps set up supporters of ousted president morsi. police were firing tear gas and removing roadblocks. u.s. embassy in cairo closed early in response to the uncertain security situation. u.s. officials are warning americans in the country to avoid large gatherings. today we could learn the identity of the woman kills during aconstruction accident at san jose city college. the woman was hit by a front leader walking on a sidewalk during the project. investigators say the massive vehicle backing up to move a load of dirt when it ran into her, killing her. preston pipeline, the company on the job there, says the driver does have more than 35 years' experience. classes at city college of san francisco starting today but the future of that school still unclear. the college set to lose its

accreditation and is likely to shut its doors some time next year. as of right now, the u.s. department of education says, the commission that decided to revoke the accreditation broke several federal laws when it reviewed the school. this morning, it's unclear what impact, if any, the new information will have on the school's future. the california federation of teachers and city college of san francisco will be holding a teleconferen teleconference, starting at 11:o11 11:00. 5:34. grab pencils, calculators, do they take protractors anymore? >> classic. >> thousands of kids back to school in the south bay. east side union district had first classes yesterday. today, san jose unified back in session. bob redell live in san jose. be careful, slow it down out there, kids are back. >> reporter: a lot of traffic's out there. especially in the south bay. good morning, laura and jon.

this is the start of a two-week marathon of back to school in the south bay throughout the bay area. last school districts to go back to school august 28th. what is going to be different about this school year is that the state will be starting to implement their common core standards. if you're not familiar with these, these are something that over the past three years, 45 states have adopted including california, and embassically the same standards for english and math, benchmarks for what students should know and be able to do after the completion of each grade. the purpose to better educate the country and make the united states more competitive with other countries especially those in europe and asia where students generally perform better than american students. in theory, all students going to schools with the common core standards getting the same education, if they move to another school in a state that's adopted the standards. they require teachers to receive

"todayn the bay's" danielle lee live in washington with ground breaking shift in policy. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's true, it's a big step forward for same-sex couples who have been fighting for equal rights. the department of defense announcing that starting september 3er, less than a month from now, same-sex couples married will get the same benefits as married heterosexual couples and this is going to be occurring after the fact of the supreme court ruling that real lay struck down that key provision of the defense of marriage act which had been preventing the couples married from getting the benefits. the benefits are going to include health care, also housing, and one interesting change that goes along with this, something that you mentioned. those same-sex couples serving in states where they cannot legally marry will be given time off to travel to a state where they can legally marry, get that marriage lps, and begin receiving benefits as well. danielle lee. back to you. >> this morning, it's unclear

how many sailors died in a massive explosion on board indian navy submarine. a huge fireball went shooting hundreds of feet into the air. submarine docked in a port city of mumbai when the explosion happened overnight. an indian navy official says 18 sailors on board, some reportedly jumped into the water trying to escape the flames. the official believes some of them did die but at this point, it's unsure how many did. the cause of the explosion and fire remains under investigation. also new this morning, a deadly end to a tense 12-hour stand-off down in louisiana. just before midnight, police stormed the bank where an armed gun man holding three employees hostage. as police entered the bank the suspect reportedly shot two of the hostages. officers shot and killed the gunman. this morning, learning one of the hostages has died. the condition of the or hostage remains unmoan this morning.

a third hostage was not hurt. officials say they found a book on hostage negotiations at the suspect's apartment and they say that man seemed to believe a device had been implanted his brain and the situation a planned attack. the southern california teenager at center of the nationwide amber alert opening up about the horrific ordeal on social media. 16-year-old hannah anderson now answering questions on the website ask.fm. anderson calls her captor a psycho and wrote about fearing for her life as she tried to escape. when asked what she did when learned her mother and brother were killed, hannah replied, quote, cried all night. hannah rescued saturday from the idaho wilderness, her alleged captor, james dimaggio, was shot and killed by fbi agents. back in court today, real tv stars theresa guidice and her husband joe, arraigned on a

we expect that volume to be shifting down as folks are heading west on 580. average speed coming way down, really jammed up, as you're heading into livermore, right here. typical slowing out of the altamont pass. look at this shot from caltrans camera a few minutes ago, stacking up, westbound commute direction. lights stacking up in the direction as you're heading towards vasco road. a crash on eastbound side as folks are heading counter commute. two fast lanes in the eastbound direction blocked because of a crash. they may have to land a helicopter to get medical assistance. we're watching for that effect. we see the westbound jam up as flashing lights on the opposite side of the freeway. livermore and toward the dublin interchange lighter. we'll end with a shot of sunol. we'll get a quick look. southbound, 680 smoothly into the south bay. we'll talk about the roads there in the next report.

the driver accused of crashing a part bus on 280, then running from the scene is expected to be in court today. 43-year-old facing felony dui, manslaughter, hit-and-run charges. investigators believe he was behind the wheel of the party bus when it veered off the freeway, hit a tree, and flipped near alpine road. this happened sunday night. the only passenger in the van, 38-year-old adam bloomquist died at the scene. closing arguments expects today in the trial of accused serial killer joseph naso. he's charged with murdering four northern california win between 19 77 and 1994. prosecutors are expected to again their final arguments today. his closing arguments are scheduled for friday. into the time now 5:50. lost and found, dozens of items accidentally left this weekend at the outside lands festival. how to get your hands on stuff that you may have left behind.
