we're learning more about hannah anderson's abduction ordeal and the information is coming from the 16-year-old herself. joe, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. you could say it's a virtual news conference on a website that allows anyone to post questions on a user's page. while authorities and the family have not said it's indeed hannah, reports began surfacing yesterday in a san diego newspaper about someone claiming to be her. the questions came from friends and strangers posting on ask fm. the account in hannah anderson's name was established long before her abduction. there was no activity starting the day she disappeared, then the page calm alive again monday after she returned to california, but we don't know for certain if she's the one posting. one response claims that james dimaggio had a gun and threatened to kill me and anyone that tried to help.
7:12 am
it also discussed how he burned down his house east of san diego saying he had it set to where it could catch on fire at a certain time. investigators say hannah didn't learn that the bodies of her mother and brother were inside the home until after she was rescued. why didn't you tell your parents he creeped you out. the answer, he was dad's best friend and i didn't want top ruin anything between them. as for why he did it, the website says, because he's psycho. when asked if she's happy -- when asked if he is happy the fbi shot dimaggio or would she prefer he spent life in prison? the post reads shot him. he deserved what he got. it also has photos of hannah, including her freshly painted nails. in honor of her mom and her brother ethan. there's a powerful message to the murdered relatives. it hasn't even hit me yet that you're gone.

7:14 am
the doj says they would raise prices here and across the country. in the world of airline mergers this was going to be a big one. >> let's introduce ourselves to the world. not again, but for the very first time. >> reporter: but a marriage between u.s. airways and american always made some customers uneasy. >> it's going to stifle competition. i think it's going to allow fares to go up, and i'm not too pleased about it. >> i'm mostly concerned about price if the two airlines merge and if their prices are no longer competitive then i would be unhappy. >> reporter: now the justice department is moving to block the deal, and it's joined in its lawsuit by attorneys general from six states and d.c., including arizona and texas, the states in which both airlines are based. >> the impact is less choices where they could go, when they could go. the prices would be higher. the service would be lower. >> reporter: but in a joint statement the airlines vowed to fight the government in court
7:15 am
saying blocking this pro-competitive merger will deny customers access to a broader network that gives them more choices, and it provides the best outcome for americans restructuring from bankruptcy. analysts think the merger makes good sense. >> this industry has a track record of too many planes and too many players. unless can they tighten up profitability it will be a badly damaged industry. >> reporter: the proposed deal would be the latest mega merger following united, continental, northwest, delta, southwest and airtran and ata. u.s. airways and america west. some consumer groups say that's enough. >> right now, we still have a good semblance of competition within the airline industry and it's not like it would have been had this merger gone through. >> reporter: these two airlines had hope to complete their merger by the end of september. clearly that's not going to happen. these two will fight in court to
7:16 am
overturn the justice department attempt to block it. meanwhile, they'll compete against each other and other airlines. guy, back to you. >> tom costello, i'll take it. thank you very much. let's turn to the international editor for "travel & leisure" magazine. first question that popped in my head was, these other megamergers have gone through in recent years. what's different about this one? >> this one, according to the department of justice, there are thousands of lines that are -- thousands of routes that are potentially impacted. that could mean higher fees and less service for the average american traveler. >> because these two particular airlines share the routes. that means the competition would be reduced. >> that's right. the airlines are going to find that if you don't have as much competition, there's no reason to keep the prices low. you can save a lot of money right now because of the competition. >> when you look back at some of these mergers, what's the bottom line on prices? did they go up? >> yes, they have. over the last five, six years airfares have definitely gone up. how much of that is directly attributable to mergers as to other factors, i couldn't tell
7:17 am
you. yes, you can expect fares will continue to go up with mergers. >> if you take an example of u.s. airways and american right now, there could be huge fare differences. they would evaporate? >> quick example, if you were to fly on u.s. air as opposed to american from new york to houston, you could save over $800. you'd have to stop once. they call it advantage fare. if you want to go from miami to cincinnati, you could save over $300. >> you know, american did enter bankruptcy. the airline industry has been notoriously unprofit nbl the past. a lot of analysts have looked at this deal and said it should go through. the airlines need it to survive. you buy it? >> no, the airlines have said they're financially healthy. they both made over $200 million profit. >> very quickly, the chief executive airways struck a defiant tone telling employees we will close the merger before year end. what can they do to fight? >> i think they can negotiate. i think they can give up some of their slots at some of the major competing airports. >> all right, mark. great to have you here. thanks so much. now here's matt.

we are back now at 7:30 on the west coast on a wednesday, august 14th, 2013. we are following breaking news out of birmingham, alabama. a u.p.s. cargo plane crashing near the airport there, killing two crew members. investigators just getting on the scene. you mentioned looking at the weather that wouldn't appear to be a factor. >> at 6:00 a.m. it was 74 degrees. winds were light. visibility was about ten miles. >> this happened about a half a mile away from the runway. a lot of questions to be answered. >> we want to go back out to nbc's tom costello. good morning again. >> reporter: hi, guys. good morning.

this appears to be an air bus a-300. it was flying in from louisville, kentucky, to birmingham, alabama, trying to make the approach at 5:00 a.m. central time when it crashed short of the runway in a field. we're told the crew members, the pilot and co-pilot, were killed apparently in this crash. no other structures on the ground were involved. an ntsb go team left here at reagan national airport at about 9:30 or so eastern time, 6:30 on the west coast. they'll get to the scene, we're told, before noon and begin a very thorough examination. no idea yet what caused this crash. we can tell you that in recent crashes involving cargo planes, they've been very concerned about cargo shifts, weight imbalances. we've seen that in the past. in addition, concern about lithium battery fires. that brought down a u.p.s. plane in dubai about three years ago. so everything is on the table at this point as the ntsb and faa begin this investigation. at the moment, the birmingham pd

7:33 am
>> well, we have a full-fledged fire department. we were able to get on the site fairly quickly. our men and women of the birmingham police and fire department, they train constantly for events such as this. we hate that we have to use that training on this occasion, but they did it in a professional manner to subdue the fire. there were a couple fireballs that took place with explosions. i'm assuming that was fuel from the plane, but they were able to suppress that. >> and if there was good news here, mr. mayor, this plane came down in a field and not in some residential area. >> yes, if it had hit maybe a half mile to the north, we would be talking about something totally different now. >> all right. william bell, who is the mayor of birmingham, alabama. mr. mayor, thank you for your time this morning. i really appreciate it. >> thank you, plamatt. we'll shift gears and get the weather from al. >> as we look at temperature gauge, we're seeing a lot of cool weather throughout a good portion of the country. 60% of the country below normal. in the midsection, anywhere from
