one day closer, the weekend is almost here. good morning. thank you for joining us. it's 4:30. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to this morning. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning, laura and jon, good morning to you at home. temperatures are down right balmy to kickoff your thursday. 64 in san jose, that goes for livermore as well. because we're starting out so mild, temperatures are going to be just about as warm as we head through the afternoon even though we have more low cloud cover to start the day. we're so close to tweak end, i'll show you the numbers coming up. first let's check with mike inouye. >> kind of boring which is what you want from your drive. we're looking at this shot. i have turned the camera. no flashing lights. you see the barricade across the roadw roadway. it's well marked. you see the car going nearby. that's the warren off-ramp.

the mission boulevard cutover still closed. there's construction in the area and the corridor between. use auto mall parkway. there are signs lit up and posted through area. the rest of the south bay looks really nice, guys no. major problems. let's get right to the breaking news out of the east bay where an armed suspect is shot dead by police overnight following a domestic dispute. this happened late last night. hayward police responding to a call at an apartment complex on tennyson road not too far from hess spearian boulevard. police say the man armed with a knife was threatening to kill his wife. officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon. he reportedly refused and made some sort of move towards police. >> they came at the officer with the knife raised, forcing the officer to, in defense of his life, shoot the subject who was

armed with a knife. >> that suspect ended up dieing at the hospital. police telling us three other people were inside that apartment at the time of the shooting. none of them were hurt. >> happening now in egypt, tensions remain high this morning after the most violent day since the arab spring began. we've got a live look. we'll attempt to get that this morning from cairo. the egyptian health ministry says 535 people were killed, 3700 others injured. the violence erupted when police broke up two camps of supporters of out stead president mohamed morsi. the violence said to be so severe, egypt's vice president quit. yesterday secretary of state john kerry issued a warning, but so far no sign the u.s. will withdraw billions of dollars in aid from that country. in iraq more than 30 people are dead following a series of car bombs in bagdad. iraqi officials say five car bombs exploded across the

capital this morning, wounding dozens more. one of the bombs went off near a bus station. violence has been on a rise since a crackdown on a sunni protest camp in april. more than 3,000 people have been killed since then. closer to home, accused serial killer joseph naso set to give his closing arguments to the jury tomorrow, the 79-year-old acting as his own attorney. during closing statements yesterday, prosecutors reading from naso's diary quoting details of how he would talk, approach and overpowering women, writing he couldn't help himself. he's been charged with strangling and killing four northern california women between the 170s and 1990s. sentencing gets under way for two men convicted of gang raping a teenage girl. marcel less peter and jose montano each face 33 years to life in prison. last month the two were found

guilty on all counts for their involvement of a gang rape of a 16-year-old girl during a homecoming dance. two more are awaiting trial. a bike rider who hit and killed a pedestrian in san francisco expected to learn his fate. chris bucari pleading guilty after hitting and killing a 71-year-old man back in march of last year. kerry blogged about this incident saying after it happened saying he just couldn't stop in time. he's expected to receive 1,000 hours of community service and three years' probation when he's sentenced this afternoon. meantime the family of the victim, 71-year-old suchi wi. the family will speak immediately after the sentencing hearing 507s. a well-known private all girl's school in hot water.

a permit issued to castileija limits students to 415 students. 448 are expected to start late they are month. the school will need to apply for a new permit. neighbors are upset because they say more students mean the already crowded streets near campus will get worse. school officials are holding a community meeting to talk about the enrollment issue and share planes about a shuttle to help ease traffic congestion. in the meantime school starts for palo alto public school. also going back to school, students in the morgan hill unified school district. today we'll find out whether that new span of the bay bridge will actually open on the labor day weekend as planned. officials pushed the opening day back to december or later to give crews time to install a fix of dozens of broken bolts. this week a report from the

federal highway administration urging crews to put in a temporary fix. that would allow the bridge to open much sooner. the argument is the newbridge with the temporary fix will still be safer than the current bridge. the toll bridge program oversight committee will announce its decision on the official opening day at 10:00 this morning. for the fourth time in recent weeks, vector control crew also be out in force fogging for mosquitos in the south bay. they'll focus near the border of north and east san jose. officials say mosquitos found in that area last week tested positive for the virus. tonight's treatment comes on the heels of the first confirmed human case of the year. weather permitting, the fogging will begin at 11:00 tonight and will take several hours. preventative medicine in the air. >> got to do what you've got to do. 4:37. let's check in with christina loren. again, warm, warm and warmer. >> it is going to be a pretty warm weekend. good morning, jon and laura. good morning to you at home.

i want to start with your temperature change over the past 24 hours. we're running about three to six degrees milder than 24 hours ago. that's going to lead to an afternoon that's just about as warm as yesterday. some cities are actually going to end up a little warmer. this morning, look at the numbers. we're in the mid 60s about everywhere, 64 for san jose, 65 in sunnyvale. kicking off the day at 62 degrees san francisco, very close to your average high for this time of year already. this is what we're expecting, we stop the clock for you at noon. temperatures already at 90 degrees at lunchtime in antioch. it's going to be a warm day in the extreme east bay. more mid 90s headed your way. 70 on the way to san francisco. 84 degrees in rhett wood city. ly point out we have quite a bit more low cloud cover to start the day than yesterday. right now everything looks good. let's check on that drive with mike inouye. >> glad you mentioned the low clouds.

they're hovering above the bay bridge and the san mateo bridge. you see the glow to the lights. there's moisture in the air. so far no problems across 92. the headlights approaching 101. we'll show you the same area on the maps, north of menlo park. over here toward 280 there was an earlier report of a wrong-way driver headed on to southbound 280. turns out there is a crash. maybe that crash discovered it was going a wrong way or maybe woke up. whatever the kaerks it's at the edgewood off-ramp right now. activity with police or chp and also that one driver. but no slowing through the area. palo alto, easy drive for 101. palo alto and morgan hill schools back in session today. that will affect traffic. even if you don't have kids, this could affect your drive. we're looking over toward the east bay with a nice flow of traffic past the open coliseum.

good thursday morning to you. a live look from some planet somewhere. >> looks like a lunar expedition. that's actually here on earth. >> it's here in the bay area, jon kelley. it's san francisco. kind of illustrates the foggy start. christina loren will clear everything up for us. she's god a look at the forecast for us. 4:44. a south bay high school student recovering after a violent robbery on a school campus. police say a man approached a girl on a silver creek high school campus.

tried to take her ipad. a teenage boy tried to help, that's when he was pistol whipped. the robber took off and police are still looking for him. police need your help spotting bank robbers, they stormed into the u.s. bank at south bascom and campbell avenue yesterday afternoon. that is just across the way from the prune yard shopping center after forcing an employee to hand over cash, the two then jumped back into the red truck driven by a third guy. the gmc sierra was stolen from watsonville and ditched about a mile from that bank. police think the robbers are now on the run from a blue-green tahoe and a small silver honda. 4:45. american airlines is headed to bankruptcy court today. american's parent company amr will be asking a bankruptcy judge to approve its turn-around plan which concludes a proposed merger with us airways. the hearing was supposed to be

one of the final steps to get amr out of bankruptcy in almost two years. now the federal government is suing to block the merger. the lawsuit expected to impact today's hearing. bad news from san jose's sysco. that sends the company's stock dropping after yesterday's bell. seema mody live at cnbc world headquarters is here to talk about that plus a look at how futures are trading. >> good morning. let's start with that stock chart. shares of sysco in focus while profits in the most recent quarter rose on increased demand for its products, the san jose-based company is being cautious. ceo john chambers says they're cutting 5% of the workforce, the stock dropping 10% in after-hours trading. the dow fell by triple digits, closing at a one-month low and

the lows of the sechlths investors are still concerned the fed may perhaps start to pull back or taper its massive bond-buying program in the next few months. that stimulus helped to keep interest rates low. today look ot for economic data on unemployment, consumer prices, manufacturing and housing as well as earnings from retail giant walmart. the dow falling 113 points and the nasdaq losing 15 in yesterday's trading. futures slightly lower across the board. >> seema, we'll keep our eye out for that. keeping our eye on the sky, christina loren, we saw how foggy it was. we get the compressed marine layer. those beach day also be so nice. they're going to come in right in time for the weekend. you're so close now. 62 degrees in san francisco to kickoff the day. so with all that fog out there, low ceilings, we will likely see flight delays this morning. want to keep that in mind if you're getting out of town, maybe knocking off for friday. temperatures here will be warm, but even warmer down in southern

california. if you're headed that way, make sure you have your summer gear ready. the first official day of fall is the 21st of september. this is what we're looking for. breezy conditions. the winds will pick up throughout the afternoon. for the most part, still coming out of the southwest. that's onshore flow. that's what's bringing the cloud cover this morning. high pressure in control to our south, and this is going to drive our winds a little more offshore as we head throughout the second half of the day, making for really comfortable conditions in santa cruz. elsewhere not quite as warm today as it was yesterday. we'll see the fog roll back in a little earlier. 70s and 80s around the bay and your temperatures work out like this, city by city, 86 in san jose, 90 in gilroy. temperatures close to 90 degrees in morgan hill where kids are heading back to school. make sure you've got the water bottle and spf 30 plus ready to

go. on saturday, temperatures start to moderate a little bit. then we climb. here is the deal for sunday. temperatures we're looking much warmer, but we'll see the monsoonal moisture coming your way. shaved off a few degrees. still going to be hot. we could actually see isolated thunderstorms sunday and monday as we head through next week, temperatures start to climb yet again tuesday into wednesday. it's going to be hot, looking like hot conditions for the second half of the month of august. we'll keep you updated. after all, the weather is always changing around here. >> that's why we have you. thanks so much. it's 4:49. the stuntman who amazed the world when he parachuted into the london 2012 olympics dressed as james bond. mart sutton dropped into the stadium. this morning nbc news confirmed he was killed during a

wing-driving crash. police say he was one of 20 wing suit drivers participating in the event when he crashed into a bridge and sadly perished. unsealed search warrants revealing very chilling details about the murders, saying james dimaggio tortured hannah anderson's mother and brother before eventually killing them. the warrants say anderson's friends says dimaggio frequently took the teenager on day trips. investigators found dimaggio and anderson e changed more than a dozen phone calls on the day dimaggio killed hannah's mother and brother. 4:15. more than two dozen ntsb officials sifting through wreckage of a cargo plane looking for any clues as to why the plane crashed.

witnesses say they saw flames coming moments before the crash in birmingham. they say they could hear the engine struggling as the plane flew overhead. ntsb investigators say there's no record of a disstraes call from the crew. they're hoping to recover the plane's black box. the tale is still smoldering from the massive fire. the pilot and copilot on board were killed. state regulators right now in the process of investigating fracking off the california coast. the california coastal commission will discuss that issue sometime later today. a recent report by the associated press revealing the federal government has allowed hydraulic fracturing or fracking off the coast since the late 1990s. fracking involves pumping water and sandal long with chemicals into rock formations to try and collect oil or gas. the work is happening more than three miles offshore so it is regulated by federal agencies

monkey cage, too. trouble out there on 101, mike. >> yeah. just after the last report when i showed you palo alto and university, this is when the crash happened. this is on the northbound side, folks, looking at emergency crews that have arrived. only one northbound lane is open. that's in the bright light illuminated by the ikea building. that's where you notice folks getting off university avenue, probably off and bark on as they route around that. a lot of slowing. 280 is a great alternate for you. expect slowing approaching out of palo alto. we'll track it and the injuries, back to you. it's 4:57. we'll tell you about a south bay church, a victim of crime for the second time in one week. a bay area man charged with murder thanks to something he tweeted out. why police say they filed charges.
