>> i'm jon kelley. a wild scene to tell you about. a man recovering this morning suffering serious injuries after jumping off a freeway overpass trying to run away from police. that man jumped from a railing above the 280/680 interchange in east san jose. "today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us from that scene. >> reporter: good morning to you. we are standing on the on-ramp to 280 that only reopened within the last couple hours. this is because san jose police had a lot of cleaning up today. they had to clean up the mess left behind after this man jumped from way above here. we're going to give you a live look at this. this is the connector to 101 at the 280-680 interchange. the man jumped and landed below on this northbound on-ramp. the sand that you are seeing below here, it's pretty

gruesome, this is to cover up this man's blood. at one point police using a tape measure to figure out the distance of this drop. it's estimated to be about 40, 50 feet. police say this all started just before 9:00 last night when they attempted to pull over a white sedan in this area. the driver wouldn't stop. eventually he spun out on the 101 connector. this morning san jose police are not telling us why they attempted to pull him over in the first place. >> we're talking to a few witnesses and trying to get their statements and trying to put the whole picture together. >> reporter: of course, if you happen to be one of those witnesses, you are asked to call san jose police. the man, as jon mentioned, suffered some major injuries. he's recovering in the hospital this morning. he had with him in the white sedan two passengers. they were taken into custody by san jose police, interviewed by police. it's not clear if they're under arrest. i have a call out to san jose

police and i'm hoping to learn more information. live in east san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." 6:02. new this morning, a woman dead and a man injured after a gunman opened fire in east oakland overnight. oakland police say the two were found shot on 100th avenue near san leandro street after 11:30 last night. the woman died at the scene. the man was taken to the hospital and we don't have word on his condition this morning. police are investigating a motive for that shooting. the trial of accused serial killer joseph naso finally coming to a close. naso delivering his closing arguments today in a marin county courtroom. naso on trial for the murders of four women back in the 1970s and 1990s. you may know this one. he is acting as his own attorney. he is insisting he is innocent. a celebration of life will be held this morning for the 1-year-old boy shot to death in east oakland last week. drew jackson and his father were sleeping inside a home when

th bedroom. both drew and his father were killed. today's public service starts at 11:00 a.m. today at fuller funerals on international boulevard. drew's mother is asking those planning to attend not to wear black. so far there are no arrests in those killings. let's get you to the developing story in egypt where that country's muslim brotherhood is calling for a nationwide day of rage to protest this week's deadly riots. we have a live look at the tv coverage in cairo. you can see protesters there on the move. wu we saw them moments ag goep running across the bridge to ramsey square. the egyptian government threatening to use deadly force if protests get out of hand. this is abjú live picture we'r picking up. at least 638 people now confirmed dead after clashes this week between riot police and supporters of ousted islamist president mohamed morsi. president obama has denounced all the violence.

the state department right now considering whether to pull billions of dollars in aid from that country which is an ally to the u.s. >> we've got new details this morning about a 6.5 magnitude quake and several aftershocks that rattled central new zealand. the quake struck near the small town of seddon. mag tooif five or stronger, several homes near the epicenter were seriously damaged with chimneys dlapsing and roofs caving in. one bridge also badly damaged. in wellington, some buildings were evacuated. items knocked off the shelves. a number of people were freed from elevators that stopped working. the initial quake also forced st close for more than an hour. but there are no reports right now of serious injury. so that is great news with such a magnitude of force there. it's 6:05 right now. every day we feel blessed with

sunshine today, a little warmer than normal, christina loren. >> this is a beautiful place to live, not just because of the weather, but because of our beautiful scenery. starting with one of the icons, the carcinas bridge. look at all this fog. we've got some really reduced visibility right at the immediate coast this morning. i'm talking to the tune of a quarter mile at times. travel cautiously, but look at this. let's take you above the clouds. i promised you a gorgeous sunrise. this is from high atop san bruno. this is the sky we will all enjoy later today. just a beautiful day. look at all that thick fog right to the surface. that's because of high pressure building. look at the difference in your temperatures. you have two, three, four degrees cooler conditions right at the immediate coast with that fog. napa, ten degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. we're getting the subtropical moisture so the microclimates making a significant appearance this morning. 64 in livermore, 65 to start the day in san jose and 61 in

gilroy. this is where we're head phd the bay. a touch cooler here, you will notice the humidity creeping up. 82 bay side and 70 degrees at the coast. another gorgeous day, once we clear the fog, it should clear up about 11:00 a.m. mike has a traffic alert. >> the sun snoel area, no insignificant thing this morning. today it's the focus of the big problem. the southbound and northbound directions both jammed up north 680 north of androtti still blocked until possibly 7:30. that's the latest that chp says. right now do not plan on driving through sunol in either direction. look at the map. it's jammed both directions approaching the scene of the crash. the northbound side is where we have the closure of the freeway because of the overturned big rig. it has to clear and it has yet to show improvement. it's stacking up out of fremont. the niles canyon road all the way over for 84 and jumping up with 680 north

to san ramon. look at these folks coming down for 680 out of pleasanton. 84 and 580 out of livermore to the same area, they all focused past that crash which is a huge distraction. the southbound side is really jammed up south from pleasanton all the way through sunol and approaching fremont. if you're coming from the routes in either direction, 880 and 580 are your alternates. it adds a lot more mileage, but this is friday light for the area. again, not on 680 through sunol and fremont. low clouds not a problem and lighter traffic flow past the truck scales again as you're heading into the south bay. no issues here. we'll end with the bay bridge toll plaza which has your cash especially the lanes off to the left. off to the right you're okay. we should get the metering lights soon a because there are low clouds and possible issues across the bridge. busy friday morning, mike. thank you very much. construction on a new downtown high-rise in san jose's market street has taken an historic

turn. crews there discovering what appears to be the foundation or basement of a previous building or home. archaeologist haves been out on the site checking things out there. they at this point will not say exactly what they found. researchers at that time dr. martin luther king, junior library say old maps show a grain feed building on that site back in the 1880s and then a tire service store during the 1930s. whether that foundation is one of these buildings is unknown at this point. construction we can tell you is still under way on the front part of that site. the new apartment high-rise will be 23 stories high. 6:09. coming up, a hot air balloon stuck in a tree. the dramaticúrescue that helped a man and two teenage girls walk away with not more than a scratch. the nation's top spy agency intercepts phone calls from the wrong place. what went wrong? we'll take a look coming up in business and tech. we've seen this man on bicycles, flying off bridges and screaming on roller coasters. now it's bob behind the wheel.

a man in the hospital after police say he jumped more than 20 feet from a freeway overpass in san jose. police say they were trying to pull the man over in a car when he sped off, crashed that car and jumped off the overpass. he survived that fall but has major injuries. several strong earthquakes damaging homes and i would imagine rattling a lot of nerves in new zealand. a 6.5 magnitude quake struck first followed by at least six aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.0 or stronger. police say a number of homes near the epicenter were severely

damaged along with a bridge on a state highway. supporters of ousted egyptian president mohamed morsi have declared a day of wage to protest and's deadly riots. protesters continue to march through the street as the military threatens to use deadly force. the death toll has risen to more than 600. the story goes, the national security agency apparently confused egypt and washington, d.c. phone lines. >> big difference there. scott mcgrew, it seems hard to believe. >> it does, doesn't it? this is according to nsa's own audits published by "the washington post." the nsa under pressure to set up new rules to make sure your privacy is protected. the audit shows the agency violated old privacy rules thousands of times each year. in some cases intentionally. in some cases by mistake. in the case of confusing egypt with washington, apparently programmers meant to intercept

phone calls made in country code 20, that's egypt. but told computers 202. that's the area code for washington, d.c. the audit says a large number of phone calls were intercepted from washington, d.c., though the nsa does not define what a large number is. apple wants to clear up confusion between counterfeit chargers and real chargers. it's offering a deal starting today. bring in your after market or third party or counterfeit charger, whatever you want to call them, to an apple store. they'll exchange it for a real apple charger for ten bucks. this comes after at least wurn death due to a shock from a knock-off charger. if you're driving your tesla past the tesla plant in fremont, you can stop in and get a charge. opening a super charging station this morning at 10:00. tesla wants to build chargers from l.a. to vancouver. jon and laura, this is something

i'm sure you recognize, called a float switch. it is one of the most common things to go wrong in your dishwasher. a repairman will make about 100 bucks coming the your house to fix it. a guy who shows you how to do it on the internet makes $100,000. this is the guy. i talked to him on skype. he makes better than 100 k a year in his pajamas, answering questions about internet appliance repair, a website called pearl.com. he's one of many that make better than six figures. we'll talk to the founder on "press here" this sunday after "meet the press." >> wow. what services can we offer? >> we could read the news to people. that's the problem, we're offering it for free. >> six figures sitting around in your boxer shorts. not a bad gig if you can get it. >> i don't know if i need to see that part. >> depends on who is wearing the

only come a few times that want to come for the last time. people have great memories when they're coming back with their kids, i've heard a ton of stories the last couple weeks of how important this location is to a lot of the local people. >> my favorite memory is one time when you and i were riding around the track -- it was actually a few minutes ago. so what happened? why are you shutting down? >> couldn't come to an agreement on the lease. both sides decided it was time to move on. unfortunately it's a sad ending, but there are, like i said, a lot of great memories here for many lobesal people. >> before coming out here this morning, i had it in my head o karks grand prix malibu, but still other go kart places. that's technically not correct. these aren't go karts, especially look at the single car, three-quarter scale indy cars that you guys built from the ground up. outside of one place in l.a.,

this is the last location. >> that's correct. that is true. that's what's very unique about malibu is that it is also on an outdoor track. a lot of the tracks are indoors nowadays. these cars go up to 40 miles per hour. proprietary to malibu and the build them up from the ground up back in the late 70s. >> where are they going to go? >> going to another location, i believe in portland. there really won't be any left in california. >> if you're sitting at home thinking you want your hands on one of these, they're all spoken for. malibu grand pri shutting down after 35 years. last time on the track will be 8:00. who is going to be the last driver? >> that's a good question. probably some of the team members will probably jump out and do one of the final laps. >> appreciate it. laura, jon? >> i want to take one just around my neighborhood. >> i like bob redell doing the "thelma and louise" thing this

morning. >> hopefully not off the cliff like the movie. >> that would be bad. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. you can feel the moisture as you head out the door this morning. >> you certainly can. happy friday. 6:19. thanks for waking up with us on friday morning, lots of people want to get out for one last summer hurrah. many kids heading back to school on monday. let's show you what's going on out there. let's start with the shot here in san bruno. if you can hang on the shot for one moment, a couple things i want to point out from time to time, you can see the fog drifting around. the sun is coming up. fog clears from the top down.je it's actually starting to burn off already. in addition to low clouds, we have high and mid-level moisture moving in as well. let's show you san jose where the sun is making an appearance. we have cloud cover trapping in some of the warmth from yesterday. temperatures are down right balmy as a result. you can actually see those clouds coming up from the southeast this morning pushing off to the northwest.

this is what we're looking for. 64 to kickoff the day in livermore. 65 in san jose and 62 degrees down in gilroy. here is what working with. the subtropical moisture will be pumped into the bay area. it will feel hot, hazy and humid. not quite as bad for saturday. but sunday is looking like a score cher. so that is your beach day if you can get out there. also as we head into next week, talking about more of the moisture coming through. instability in our atmosphere and the potential for mountain thunderstorms. actually a pretty good shot for that. 91 in livermore, 77 in fremont, 82 in san jose. want to get over to mike inouye in just a moment. this shot of traffic is not looking better. 88 degrees on saturday. sunday 99 degrees. take a look at the difference between the two weekend days. beach day on sunday. wow, mike, a rough drive out there. >> christina was looking at another monitor. that's the sig alert. i want to take you first to the bay bridge toll plaza where this set of flashing lights is a

on friday. we see these flashing lights in your middle fast track lanes. there's a single car accident here. but now everybody clustering around it. this is becoming a hazard for folks helping out the car that was involved in the crash. no injuries reported. again, this distraction as well has the crowd building for the cash track lanes and metering lanes. the low clouds hovering around the deck, the eastshore freeway and the bridget self. the maze approaching the bay bridge is not the concern. it's 680 jammed. southbound your commute direction slammed down, although all lanes are open. it's the northbound side out of fremont coming down here past the truck scales, around the bend. another hour until chp thinks they can clear that. these folks are turning around heading south, heading south into fremont. both directions jammed up heading to the area.

this is just around the sunol valley golf course. if you're coming through the area out of fremont, you're okay. you go to mission and take niles canyon road and join 680 north past that. that's the direction that has all lanes closed. there is an alternate. you see the folks heading out of the area. as the commute builds for a friday, this is all jamming up, a big distraction. that's why everybody is slowing, including the h.o.t. lanes. slow solano through 84 as well. we also have our alternate which is 880 to 580. it is clear. we'll send it back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 6:22. coming up, tangled. we'll tell you how a hot air balloon hit a snag that sent it straight into a tree. showing investigatorst examinin the black box flight recorders they recovered from the wreckage. the ups plane clipped treetion and the end of the runway in birmingham before slamming into the hillside. the two crew members on board were both killed. the captain of the plane was a man from north carolina who served as a heavy lift helicopter pilot in the marines for six years. the first officer was a woman in tennessee who is known for being an aviation enthusiast. a father and his two teenage daughters back on solid ground this morning after the hot air balloon they were riding in got stuck in a tree. take a look at that. it happened in new jersey about 20 miles southeast of philadelphia. emergency crews had to use ropes to pull that balloon free and rescue the people inside. the good news is that they're all okay. it's more of a hassle than anything. happy to hear that. 6:26. an emotional morning as tornado

rerouted? we'll tell you about the big freeway closure in orange county next. there we have it. a live look at the opening bell being running in today by the uss intrepid, that's the sea, air and space museum in new york city. happy to get this day started on friday. we're happy it's friday, august 16. this is "today in the bay." good morning. happy friday everybody. it is 6:30 on the nose. thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. this morning school is in session for students who survived a massive tornado in moore, oklahoma. the twister tore through two schools almost three months ago killing seven students and 18 others. today those schools are being rebuilt in the oklahoma city suburb of moore. as construction goes on, surviving students have classes at another school and a church that survived the tornado.

plaza towers elementary school which took that direct hit from that twitter. good morning, jay. >> reporter: good morning, laura. for many this spot is the best representation of the heart of the devastation here, plaza towers elementary destroyed, as you talked about, the sevenzy2 crosses behind me representing the students that were killed during that storm. their friends are going back to class for the first time"gí tod and teachers getting the makeshift rooms ready in temporary facilities, making sure they closely resemble what they had before the storms. brier wood elementary, the other school that was devastated by the tornado and hundreds of students making their way into the classrooms again for the first time since the storm today. it's going to be a difficult, emotional time, not only for the kids but for the teachers, the staff and faculty as well. they're going to work through

this. there are extra counselors on hand and they say they'll be watching for signs as children get back this the classroom. they hope that some of the structure and routine of being back in school will help, at the very least, to be a diversion from what's been a difficult rekov rye here. there is still devastation, debris piled up for miles. a lot of kids that go back to school will go through neighborhoods that have been completely wiped away. their homes gone. they're going back to school. they'll be with their friends. they'll be with familiar faces, and that's very important according to a lot of people as they continue, laura, again, what is a very difficult, very emotional process here and one that's clearly going to take some time. no doubt. and the good thing is that children are so resilient. we can learn a lot from them. thank you, jay. 6:32 right now. the man named as a person of interest in the disappearance and murder of an oakland federal investigator will be in court

today. randy alana is in court for a parole revocation hearing. oakland police right now investigating him for the 34ur der of sandra coke whose body was found in vacaville a week ago. alana has an extensive criminal history. police say he and coke knew each other and believe they were together the night coke disappeared. in the meantime, jon, the family of sandra coke set up a fund to benefit coke's 15-year-old daughter. supporters are attempting to raise $100,000 for the fund. as of this morning more than $51,000 has been donated. we've posted a link to the donation page on our website, nbcbayarea.com. time now to check on your weather outside on a friday morning. meteorologist christina loren has been telling us the heat is on and here we go. how about a nice beauty shot there. the sunrise, the clouds, the orange, the glistening. a beautiful day from the san bruno camera. love to inspire you with those

shots. >> let's check in with christine with a look at the forecast. look at the difference. >> quite a bit of a difference. i love the way you paint that picture, jon. this is the golden gate bridge. we showed you the sky above that thick low cloud deck this morning, and it looks like the road is getting pretty slick here on the golden gate bridge as well. we have the steady drizzle coming in. let's talk about what we're expecting for today. temperatures are ball any to start, 68 degrees, two degrees away from 70 in sunnyvale. 65 in san jose and 62 in gilroy. this is sunrise so this is where we're getting our low temperatures for the morning. as we head through the afternoon, they'll creep right back up and the humidity will play a factor as well. 91 degrees inland. 82 bay side. at the coast, 70 degrees. here is the deal. we have major changes headed our way. one day much better than the other for the outdoor plans. depends on where you live. your seven-day forecast is ready to go in my next report. if you'rebzñ ready to go to wor

hold up. >> if you're planning on driving through sunol, don't make that drive. creeping southbound in the commute direction out of sunol and toward fremont past the scene of a crash on the northbound side. look at the top of your screen. folks are stacked up out of fremont past the truck scales north of androtti where all lanes are still blocked. we continue to talk about the overturned rig that happened after 5:00 this morning. it's been about an hour. tow trucks are on the scene. chp sounds like they may be closer to 8:00 when they can reopen northbound lanes. southbound is so jammed up. northbound alternate, mission boulevard over to niles canyon road. that will get you north on 680 past the crash and help you get past the area into san ramon valley. if you're taking south, the traffic will jam up out of pleasanton. west 84 out of livermore, a huge issue as more folks continue to

pack into the area traveling south past that scene. the huge distraction. 580 toward 880 is an option as well. it's friday light for that portion of your commute and much of the rest of the bay. we'll look at the bay bridge toll plaza where we had an earlier crash that has cleared from the fast track lanes. the metering lights are on. there's the building toward the end of the parking lot. watch out for slicker conditions as christina talked about drizzle across the golden gate bridge. it's friday, but that doesn't mean you have to be off guard. keep your guard up. the week is not over and neither is the commute. a lot of people headed to southern california this weekend. better brace yourself for massive detours on the state's busiest stretch of the 405. if you're headed to the oc, caltrans shutting down the 405 in orange county for 20 hours starting saturday night. th freewa)r will be close fridy the 605 interchange to valley view in westminster. so-called bridge bash closure is part of the 277 million project

cleared with police. you see this white spot on the roadway here? this is sand strewn across the on-ramp to northbound 280 from king road. this is to cover up the blood that was left behind after police say this man jumped from the 101 connector that's high above, as laura mentioned, about 40 to 50 feet above and then landed on the on-ramp here. police say he has major injuries and is currently in the hospital. police measuring the drop, in fact, as i mentioned, estimated to be three to four stories high. police say the man who jumped was the suspected driver of the white sedan. they tried to pull over shortly before 9:00 last night. >> the vehicle fled t. officers attempted to stop the vehicle and it wound up on the freeway where it was involved in a collision and there was a couple of injuries. one major and two other folks witht minor injuries.

>> reporter: that collision only involved the white sedan. it spun out on the connector at the 280-680 interchange. the driver has major injuries. police say he had with him two passengers. they were detained by police, though police are not saying why exactly or if they are officially under arrest. in fact, police are not saying much this morning, even why they tried to pull over the car in the first place. back here live this is the 101 connector above. i want to mention that overnight part of that was shut down until about 2:30 this morning. the on-ramp to northbound 280 from king road, that opened within the last few hours. live in san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." right now let's check the weather and give you a live look outside of san jose. you see some of that hez kind of descending upon the south bay. some areas clear, but christina loren is here to sort it all out for us. she has her eyes everywhere over the bay and beyond.

as promised, we want to send it to mike inouye to get an update on the traffic alert with him as things are heating up in the east bay with him. >> right on. let's take you right out there. we'll show you what's going on out here in the area of sunol. south 680, this is your commute direction. this is where folks are creeping by in the southbound direction, but all lanes are open. it's a huge distraction because of the crash just north of androtti. look to the top of your screen, this is the northbound side of 680. that has been closed since about 5:30 this morning when a big rig turned over and blocked all lanes. still the case. heavy-duty toe trucks are on scene using air bags to try to lift the truck so it doesn't rip apart. it had tens of thousands of pounds of what sounds like mail on the truck. we'll talk about the big jam in both directions approaching the scene. if you travel through sunol, try to avoid that if you can this morning. now, you will look over toward

mission boulevard coming off 680, and over here niles canyon road, this is an alternate for folks traveling north of the area. avoid the sunol grade. you can join 680 north of the crash and up to the san ramon valley without major problems, just slowing on the alternate. the southbound side is still jammed up because of the continued build coming out of the tri-valley over here at livermore, dublin, pleasanton, all the folks funneling down from 680 through pleasanton. the big distraction, 84 jumps in there as well. everybody meets up before the sunol valley golf course. you can avoid that back to 580 to the castro valley y. the earlier crash is on the shoulder. it adds more mileage, but keeps you clear on those incidents. there are low clouds but not a problem as far as the traffic flow through fremont. palo alto, the traffic flows nicely northbound past willow and into the low clouds as well. visibility on the road deck. for drivers you're okay except

for ots like the golden gate bridge where the fog is heavy. we'll look at the san mateo bridge as well. the connector between 101 and 880. over on the hayward side, you see a good volume of traffic. you can't make out the high-rise as you're traveling over the bridge. just use this caution as well as the bay bridge of course the golden gate bridge as the clouds drift through. a woman is offering $10,000 reward for a hit-and-run that heft her father unconscious. the 56-year-old man was hit south of old warm springs boulevard back on the morning of august 8. since then he's been unconscious in a hospital bed at regional medical center. that car that hit him is believed to be a dark colored camry similar to the one in this picture. the man's daughter flew out from connecticut to be by her father's side. >> the biggest mistake is somebody left. you have a responsibility to

other humans ar yound to be a big human being and somebody decided they didn't have to abide by that rule. san jose's monthly bike party hitting the road tonight for the very first time since cyclists were injured in a hit-and-run crash. police looking for a driver who ran into a group of san jose bike riders last month on west campbell avenue. a 20-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man were both injured in that crash. the driver did not stop at the scene and then sped away in a dark colored honda sedan. that monthly bike ride party event normally takes place in san jose and attracts as many as 5,000 bike riders. tonight it will be starting in sunnyvale and go through mountain view, palo alto and then it will eventually turn around at stanford. since the cyclistion are planning to use major roadways, police are asking drivers out there to be careful and watch out very closely for all those riders riding in packs. the ride is scheduled to take

place between 8:00 tonight and midnight. 6:51. tomorrow morning, cal state east bay's warren hall will come down in a cloud of smoke. crews placed explosives inside that 42-year-old building nearly 800 feet high which the university deems seismically unstable. researchers installed 600 size graphs to record the falling building's base. neighbors in santa clara will voice frustrations today over the stalled construction of the new library. a court stopping construction on the north side branch library right in the middle of a funding dispute between the city and county. the problem here, the city is spending redevelopment money on the library. the state dissolved redevelopment funds last year. under state law the money should have been transported to schools
