very good tuesday morning to one and all. it is now almost 4:31. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. lightning strikes leaving firefighters on high alert this morning. these images taken in san jose overnight. >> christina loren tracking it all for us. how is it looking out there? >> we still have showers on the radar this morning. the real action is expected later this afternoon. as we head throughout the day today, it's going to be very similar to what we saw yesterday. we accumulate the daytime heating and that's what really starts to fuel those thunderstorms. we'll show you the best places where we're thinking we could see dry lightning strikes today. i have to tell you right off the bat, we have more of a threat of the thunderstorms today even than we did overnight. there are thousands of lightning strikes just offshore. we'll take a closer look at this coming up. first mike has a traffic alert to kickoff your tuesday. a sig alert declared by chp, showing a live shot at 101/280.

a light drive here. the volume is light as well. we have the sig alert. as i take you to the map, we'll tell you northbound 880 as you're passing bascom and stevens creek, it looks like all lanes are currently blocked. chp still getting on scene and our crews still getting on scene as we follow that. right now all lanes northbound 880 are blocked through the area by a crash. we'll track the details on that and give you a work-around as well. right now, breaking news to tell you about out of east san jose where a late-night triple shooting at a restaurant has turned deadly. this all happened at around 10:00 last night . "today in the bay's" arturo santiago is live on the scene. what do we know at this hour? >> reporter: there's still a good amount of activity taking place as police continue to

investigation. take a look at the front end of this restaurant. there's a ladder that has been laid up against it. the police are using that ladder to kind of check out the wall -- the outside wall. apparently it seemed like they were looking for some kind of bullets or something. the forensics team is gathering evidence and processing the scene which could include video surveillance. they should be hard at work here for at least the next few hours. the shooting happened around 10:00 last night at the wang hand restaurant. when police arrived at the scene they found three victims. the three were taken to hospitals in the area to be treated. only one had what was considered to be life-threatening injuries. that victim died just after 2:00 this morning. >> right now we're reviewing some of the video footage, if any, and collecteding some of the evidence and processing the scene. >> reporter: sergeant bell lane any says more than one shot was fired seemingly from outside the

restaurant while at least one person inside the cafe was shot. the other two victims have already been treated and released from the hospital. at this time police don't have a whole lot of information to go on or to offer. there are no suspect descriptions or even a number of suspects involved and a motive is still not known. that's the very latest, live in san jose, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." 4:34. a pittsburg woman in the hospital after robbers broke into her children's room and then attacked her. it happened on bending willow way near park side drive. the woman's husband tells our photographer on the scene two men broke into the home through a second story window where his two children were sleeping. then the robbers ran into the mother. they allegedly beat her, ran out through the front door. the father wasn't home at the time. our bob redell heading to pittsburg right now to find out more information. we'll check in with him at 5:00 a.m. oakland officials and police investigating a complaint that a city worker severely beat a

resident. according to the "oakland tribune," 36-year-old joshua daniels suffered a black eye and broken eye socket that required ten stitches after a city worker assaulted him, beating him unconscious. daniels said the confrontation happened early sunday morning outside city hall at frank ogawa after he spit his gum into a trash bin a pair of workers was using. he started capturing the moment on the cell phone. that's when one of the men started punching him. daniels said he passed out and an hour later woke up in a pool of blood on the floor of his apartment. he says he has no idea how he got there and his cell phone is missing. the city public works agency says it's launched an internal probe. students continue to head back to school, san jose police department reinstating a program looking for kids skipping class. t

t.a.b.s. program is back in business with the opening of a t.a.b.s. processing center at pal stadium in east san jose. one full-time officer and one to two additional officers per police division will work out of that center. those officers will be charged with the sole task of tracking down students and getting them back to class. speaking of back to school, two south bay school districts resume classes this morning, sunnyvale school district and moreland school district in san jose. newly elected cindy chavez will be worn in today t. ceremony is scheduled for 6:00 at the county government center in san jose. the labor leader will be the first woman to join the five-member board of supervisors since supervisor lynn niss termed out back in january. chavez replaces disgraced supervisor george shirakawa junior who resigned in march and pleaded gill till to felony charges including perjury. workers are marching toward the end zone to finish

construction on the 49ers stadium on schedule. construction is two weeks ahead of schedule, on track to be ready at the end of june. that's more than a month before the preseason starts, leaving time for concerts and other events to be scheduled before the 49ers start to play. all set to learn new details about labor day weekend construction that will close the existing bay bridge before the new span opens up. the existing bridge will shut down at 8:00 p.m. next wednesday, traffic will flow onto the new span early on september 3rd or sooner if the work is finished. at 10:00 this morning, the bay bridge toll authority will give an update about planned construction during that closure. they will also unveil newerly completed work on the eastern span. a wildfire raging out of control in the stanislaus national forest, the rim fire, jumped 120, shutting it down from four miles west of groveland ranger station to four

miles east of buck meadows. the fire has burned more than 100 acres of rugged steep terrain. catch pers are evacuated as 160 firefighters battle the flames. 4:38 right now. dry conditions out there, hot weather, combine that with lightning. >> especially when we get the dry lightning strikes, the good news is, a couple of brush fires around the bay area yesterday. our local heroes knocked those down quickly. we have more good news for this morning at least. temperatures are running quite a bit cooler in most of your inland cities, we're running a little warmer, about four degrees warmer in half moon bay. four degrees cooler in livermore and six degrees cooler to kickoff your tuesday. temperatures are more comfortable because we're starting out cooler. livermore hit the triple digits today. i'm forecasting the low 90s. want to set this back for you, 12 hours. the dry lightning strikes across so cal. for us a lot of lightning, most of that was offshore.

chances are the thunder woke you up wherever you live in the bay area. we'll see all this activity over our land mass. this is your realtime doppler radar. you can see most of the action still offshore. as this area of low pressure moves more inland today, we'll see more mountain thunderstorms in particular. so we do have a very high concern for that. 92 degrees in livermore, 80 in fremont, 85 in san jose and 67 degrees, a cooler day for you in san francisco with those fireworks going off in the sky starting at about noon today. once we get warm enough, we need the daytime heating to feel the storms. it was hot yesterday. it won't be quite as hot out there. make sure if you are sending the little ones back to school, they have the water bottle, the spf 30 ready to go. we'll show you the seven-day when the humidity finally gets out of the bay area and we get the natural coolant as well. first let's check on the traffic alert with mike inouye. >> still going on in san jose. we do have that sig alert still in effect. look at this. we have turned our camera.

we did finally find inactivity, north 880, the on-ramp from 280 as it mernls with the other folks at the top of the screen, they'll back up. just north of this interchange -- let me show you on the map, it is there, north 880 at bass couple or as you're approaching bascom. the earlier slowing we saw is clearing up. it will come back again. the cars we saw were on the transition ramp. the freeway will start stacking up as it did. they did just reopen one lane. your shoulder, as you're getting past the scene. if you stay on bascom avenue itself and stay off 880 and join up with it, you can join just north of the crash. that should take you around the backup. traffic very light in the area. those folks that are stuck in the freeway between 280 and stevens creek look like they're just starting to eke past the crash. 87 is an alternate as well. we'll track this as the crew gets on scene. i have another crash in livermore to tell you about. right now it is 4:40.

welcome back everyone. the u.s. soldier who massacred 16 people in an afghan village, the sentencing of staff sergeant robert bail and nine afghan villagers will be flown in to testify. he's pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty. in march of last year he walked in and killed 16 people, mostly women and children. there is tighter security in iraq this morning after word of a possible terrorist attack in bagdad's green zone. iraqi authorities put up additional traffic checkpoints taking a close look at every vehicle on roads leading into the green zone. local media says security is the strictest since 2003. bombings and violence haveon th.

u.n. reports more than 1,000 people were killed in july alone. unrest i should say in egypt continues and now the spiritual leader of the muslim brotherhood has been arrested. egyptian authorities and state tv reporting the capture of mohammed baugh dee. it shows him sitting on a sofa next to an armed guard. authorities say he was found in an apartment in eastern cairo where supporters of ousted president mohamed morsi held a sit-in protest for six weeks before security forces moved in last week. baugh dee and his deputy will go on trial for the alleged role in the killing of eight protesters. pakistan's ex-military ruler pervez musharraf has been indicted by an anti-terrorism court. the former pakistani president and army chief facing three counts in the 2007 murder of

opposition leader benazir bhutto. musharraf who has been under arrest for the last four months appeared before the court in person to deny these charges. that case has been adjourned until next week. apple changing things up, offering a new iphone color. seema mody with details on that plus a look at how futures are trading this morning. good morning, seema. >> good morning. let's start with the markets. futures right now are lower after stocks fell for a fourth straight day. treasury bond yields hit a two-year high undercutting stocks on rising concerns, higher borrowing costs if and when the fed raises interest rates could hurt the economy. no economic data out today. but we get a slew of retail earnings with home depot, best buy, jc penney. as college costs rise, so do the number of students receiving financial aid. that's another big story we're watching this morning. a new report shows 71% of all

undergrads got some type of aid in the 2011 to 2012 school year, up 66% four years earlier. more than 40% are receiving federal loans and grants. the new iphone may be worth its weight in gold. apple will offer a gold tone version of the next iphone expected to be unveiled next month. it's the first new color for the device in years which currently comes in just black and white. there are a few reasons apple may have chosen gold as a new color. gold tone is relatively apply to a metallic surface. gold is also becoming a more sought-after color for high-end shoppers in china. >> very interesting. thanks so much, seema. 4:47 right now. we were just talking about this, lightning all over the area. >> thousands of lightning strikes, but most of which came down offshore. chances are you were broken up by that thunder. it was loud even in campbell where i live. the dogs got fright ned at one point. if you live along the peninsula,

you probably heard the most action if you're not a deep sleeper. 4:47 now. here is the difference between yesterday and today, starting with this live picture of the golden gate bridge, plenty of low clouds overhead, keeping temperatures cooler. i set this back six hours. this is live doppler radar, at this point nothing is happening. watch this. six hours ago, all this activity rolled through the south bay along the peninsula. a lot of people jolted out of bed. let's talk about what's happening today because we have actually a better chance to see some of the thunderstorms over our land mass today. the reason why is because the area of low pressure is starting to push inland very slowly. it's not going to be one of those days where you want to let your guard down, 66 in livermore, 63 in san jose, 57 in gilroy. i'll be here all day long tracking this for you. we have two colliding air masses. this area of low pressure, you see the counterclockwise flow, the two clash and as a result

we're right in the middle with a lot of instability out there. that muggy subtropical feel continues for die. the best chance of dry lightning will be over the higher elevationses a where you get th cooler air and boom, you get the thunderstorms. the area we're targeting today will be the east bay hills and south bay mountains, especially the western-facing slopes around san jose. we could see a hail storm, some of the thunderstorms making their way over the mountains. that's what we're watching very closely today, 67 degrees in san francisco. fair game to see those thunderstorms roll onshore even right at the immediate coast. redwood sit stay, 83 in redwood city and 85 in san jose. even though it's going to be cooler, we don't have as much heat to fuel the thunderstorms. the area of low pressure is moving further inland. 92 degrees for today. 90 tomorrow. not quite as humid on thursday.

staying warm friday into saturday, finally getting back to average. kind of a mix of subtropical clouds and sunshine all the way through saturday. then we'll start to see a nice sunshiney day on sunday. temperatures cooler, that's when the natural ac kicks back on. i'll show you the radar about every 15 minutes, guys, we want to keep you updated and the weather is certainly going to play a role in everybody's life today. >> we appreciate it, christina. a brand new poll out shows the majority of californians support the federal health care overhaul. a lot of people don't understand how it's going to affect. the poll was sponsored by the wellness foundation. public opinion about the law has been virtually unchanged since it was signed back in 2010. 53% of registered voters support the health care law. 38% are opposed. people's understanding of that new law also remain practically steady with just 15% saying they

have a strong grasp on the implications. 46% of voters say they don't expect the law to affect them at all. of those who do expect families to be affected, 23% predict they'll be better off, 26% predict worse. 4:51. san francisco city attorney is warning the state of nevada he may file suit over the dumping of psychiatric patients in the golden state. dennis herrera will send a letter to the attorney general today threatening a class action lawsuit if nevada doesn't reimburse the cities and counties where the patients were dumped. since 2008 the las vegas psychiatric hospital has reportedly shipped 1500 patients to other states via greyhound buss. a third of them ended up in california, including san francisco and san jose. herrera says the city spent about a half million on medical care, housing and aid for the 20 people shipped to san francisco. a scary and devastating

scene down in soirnth california, at least one person is dead after a big rig crashes and explodes. the fatal scene involved a total of five vehicles on interstate 10 in pomona. westbound minutes the wreckage became covered in flames and exploded. a total of ten people were injured, four of them critically. authorities were forced to shut down that freeway. that led to long traffic jams in both directions. that cleanup does continue and it's expected to take another several hours. 4:52 right now t. white house visit four decades in the making. wheel also tell you about the pro driver that will cruise by the south bay this morning for a very good cause. we're still looking at the effects of this sig alert for san jose, north 880 right around stephens creek boulevard, a lot of flashing lights and activity. i've moved the camera around and i'll sort out more details. right now it looks like traffic is eking by in one lane. we'll give you the latest in the stackup coming up.
