this is "today in the bay." good morning. it's 6:01. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. happening right now, a wildfire on the outskirts of yosemite still burning out of control this morning with about '202500 buildings now threatened by those flames. we the tell you the fire has grown to 25 square miles and has now forced the state to shut down route 120 going into the park. this morning lower bay area firefighters are being called in to help battle these flames. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in san mateo county which has already sent crews down to help fight the wildfire. christie, this is just one bay area agency sending firefighters out to help out at yosemite. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. i wish i had better news for you. but the rim fire has jumped a

containment line and seems to be growing in nearly every direction. as you said, bay area firefighters are helping out. alameda county sent about 22 firefighters from throughout the county. also san mateo county office of emergency services, their fire department sent out crews, and also within the last hour the berkeley firehxñ department say they sent one team to the rim fire. nearly 1,000 firefighters trying to fight this stubborn fire near yosemite by highway 120. the board of supervisors is asking governor brown to declare a state of emergency. this started saturday. at last count more than 16,000 acres burned, only about 5% containment. a massive, smokey fire that jumped the line near the firefighters' base camp. nine structures burned, 2500 threatened. deputies in pine mountain lake. that's the community of hundreds of people going door-to-door.

these are voluntary evacuations, but people are leaving, following what the sheriff's deputies are saying. some homes there less than a mile from the fire line. >> i'm hoping that it will stop. i'm hoping. but my grandson is fighting it. >> reporter: crews are working in extremely hot conditions. some residents are at evacuation centers. others keeping up with fire conditions at local burger places and pizza parlors trying to get the latest they can. yosemite national park, that is open. but as you said, 120 is closed near the groveland ranger station and the u.s. forest service normally updating the information around 7:00 this morning. if we get information sooner than that, we will bring it to you. live in redwood city, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> meantime firefighters battling the house fire in hayward make an unexpected discovery. the sur prifz coming in the form of hundreds of marijuana plants. we have video overnight. crews were called out to reports of a garage fire on laurie way

just after 10:30 last night. when they went into this home, fire officials say they found what appears to be a massive marijuana grow operation. they say they found the plants some four to five feet tall in several areas of the home including three bedrooms and the garage. >> there's multiple plants in each room of this three-bedroom house. i would guesstimate there's probably over y%;ñ200 plants. >> that's amazing. i never knew anything like that was going on here in the neighborhood. >> no one was home at the time of the fire, and the exact cause is still under investigation. officials say it appears to have started outside near an electrical meter. new this morning, rescuers had to pull an unconscious driver out of his suv after it crashed into a wall along highway 101. the chp tweeting out this picture from the speed. officers say the driver was speeding when he crashed on 101 southbound near the oregon

expressway on-ramp. the toyota forerun nerp hit the highway wall leaving the driver unconscious. the chp blocked the three left lanes of the highway while they pulled the driver out. no word yet on the condition of the driver. for one week hannah anderson lived life on the run, held against her will by a family friend. now anderson is sharing her story exclusively with nbc. this morning we have a preview of that conversation before it actually airs. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in our newsroom with the story you'll only see on nbc. bob, good morning. >> good morning, marla. hannah anderson, the southern california teen kidnapped earlier this week addressed critics who questioned her behavior before and after her abduction. in an exclusive conversation this morning on the "today" show she explained why shortly after her rescue, shortly after receiving news her abductor killed her mother and brother, while shortly after all that she participated with an online chat with the public and posted

smiling pictures of herself on social media. at least one person said her behavior was, quote, fishy. anderson says she can't understand how people can be so cruel. she explains this is just how she communicates with friends. >> through facebook and instagram, it just helps me grieve, post pictures and to show how i'm feeling. i'm a teenager, i'm going to go on it. >> earlier this month james dimaggio, a family friend killed anderson's mother and 8-year-old brother and rigged his house to burn with their bodies inside. he then ab ducked the 16-year-old girl leading to an amber alert across six western states including california. it was a week later horseback riders spotted the pair in idaho. fbi agents shold and killed denaj i don't and rescued anderson. you can see her full interview a little later this morning on

"today" at 7:00. after months of , it looks like santa clara county 911 dispatchers are on the verge of a strike. 911 dispatchers along with other county workers holding a news conference later today at noon. they want to talk about staffing shortages and the danger they say it's causing to public safety. this morning more of the bay area is going back to school. today three school districts are opening their doors to students including gilroy unified, menlo park city school district, hayward unified and havens wood city school district and east palo alto. eighth graders in ravenswood will get something interest in their back tops, freeb@ñ laptop. congresswoman jackie speier will be on hand at cesar chavez elementary school while facebook representatives give away the

have a tough time getting a fire near yosemite finally under control. even though it's burned 25 square miles, there's been minimal property damage. crews right now only have that rim fire about 5% contained. in hayward crews responding to a house fire discovered a marijuana grow operation. they found hundreds of plants in several parts of the home on laurie way including the bedrooms and garage. no one was home at the time of the fire. for the first time, southern california teenager hannah anderson is speaking out about her kidnapping that led to an amber alert across six states.kñ ander sorn says her mother is the reason she can see herself as a survivor today. you can watch the entire interview this morning on the "today" show that starts at 7:00. 6:14. this morning ofv)ia's informatin minister is denying allegations the government is behind the gassing and killing of hundreds of civilians. the official called the rebels' claims absurd, illogical and

fabricated. death tolls vary, but one report claims the number could be as high as 1,400. if confirmed, it would be the world's worst chemical weapons attack in decades. the united nations secretary general is calling for a thorough, impartial and prompt investigation of the allegations. former egyptian president hosni mubarak expected to be free from prison and placed under house arrest today. it's unclear where he'll be held under house arrest, either in one of his homes or a hospital because of his frail health. mubarak's release was ordered earlier this week following two years in detention. mubarak was ousted from office after a violent coup in 2011. he faces retrial in the killing of protesters during that uprising. he also faces charges in at least two other corruption cases. he is no longer bradley manning, the army private sentenced to military prison for

leaking classified documents says he plans to live out the rest of his life as a woman and wants to be called chelsea. in a statement on the "today" sh show, his attorney says he warrants to begin hormone therapy this morning and wants people to use the new name in reference to him. a spokesman says the military does not provide hormone therapy or sex reassignment surgery. manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking more than 700,000 documents to wikileaks while in iraq in 2010. bo biden underwent a biopsy of a brain mass at a houston cancer center earlier this week. it may take weeks for the results of the biopsy to come back. it comes two weeks after emergency dispatchers in delaware were called to help him in response to a report of a

possible stroke. in a statement the vice president says his eldest son is, quote, in great shape and will follow up with local physicians during the coming weeks. u.s. secretary of treasury jacob lew will be in mountain view today to talk about the state of the u.s. economy. he is expected to address how the obama administration plans to accelerate growth, create more jobs and strengthen the middle class. lew will speak at 1:00 this afternoon at the commuter history museum onshore line boulevard. a florida man has now left the country. we have new video showing michael boatright arriving in sweden greeted by a swedish woman he dated back in the early '08s. he's a 61-year-old veteran who was found in his hotel room in february. when he woke up in the hospital he was speaking swedish and

into the northeast. i can tell you you want to check ahead throughout the day with your carrier with that active weather on the east coast. here is what we're working with in terms of lightning strikes. the overall flow has pushed well to our north. this is the first morning this week we're waking up without high fire dachker in the bay area. that red flag warning expired at 5:00 p.m. today we're looking towards an active day, only to the areas north of us. for us the jet stream is going to start to dip to the south. that means we'll see a cool pattern the next couple days. the nice comfortable ocean air moving inland. 87 degrees down from the 90s in livermore. 73 in fremont, 73 on the way to san jose and 79 in los gatos. meanwhile you'll see comfortable conditions and sunshine later today. at the immediate coast, 63 for san francisco, 71 degrees in santa cruz. here it is, not as humid as we head through tomorrow. spf 30 plus, break out the

sunscreen for the weekend. as it feels comfortable, losing the humidity, temperatures will also be very representative of what we usually see this time of year. then next week we're actually going to drop off even more so. so let the beautiful weather begin. let's talk to mike about your drive. >> all those kids are so happy it's kicking in right when they go back to school. the traffic kicking in, we have the shift in schedules, here we see the big backup. over the last few days we've seen the metering lights turn on just before 6:00, typical pattern. we'll get back to the approach in couple seconds. a bigger slowdown through the tri-valley. this is westbound 580 slow, as well as 84 through livermore. we see the volume building. 680 okay through pleasanton and sunol. looking toward vasco, an accident reported. just north of near and north 580, we have road work over the course of today.

there may be slowing as you cut down to 580 in livermore. that may be an issue for discovery bay as folks head down over the course of 8:00 to 5:00 today. over toward that bay bridge and the maze, the eastshore freeway shows slowing out of richmond and richmond parkway off 580 to the richmond bridge. a crash moving to the shoulder there. a bay bridge metering lights are on. there's ashby avenue as you approach berkeley off highway 24. castro valley y showing slowing as well as south 880. your typical pattern kicking in a little earlier than the summer months. the south bay showing the volume building, 101 slows from 680 north. and heading past the airport, mark. you have your slowing from 101 from capital past san jose airport. 87 will build over the next 20 minutes. 280 not so bad.

>> i'm tieing up the last of the load to get out of here. she's got her pictures and important stuff. >> i'm hoping it will stop. i'm hoping. but my grandson is fith it. >> the fire started saturday and x destroyed two homes and fie out buildings so far. three camps in the area operated by bay area cities have been evacuated so far. >> it's been a rough summer. as wildfires rage, we're learning the top firefighting agency is running out of money to help fight the fires. the u.s. forest service spent = $967 million so far this year and now has a mere $50 million left. that's typically just enough to pay for a few days of firefighting. the u.s. forest service is diverting $600 million from timber, recreation and other areas to help fill the gap. as federal funding face it is shortfalls, local firefighters are being called on to help put out the flames.

crews in redwood city left this morning to battle the fire near yosemite. christie smith has sboek en to some of the firefighters and she'll have a live report at 6:45. 6:32 right now. christina loren, you've been watching this all summer long. the dry conditions and lack fúe moisture is making it rough for those guys. >> really rough out there. so far thisd summer we've seen 190,000 acres fwhurnd the state of california. this is the current setup for the rim fire near yosemite. want to she you on the map. the elevation is about 3,000 feet. whenever you go high up into the atmosphere, you lose that friction. so the winds are able to pick up and move around quite a bit easier. this is what we're working with for today. for the next 24 hours, conditions are going to improve. we'll see more of a west early flow, an onshore flow, us stained winds gusting 10 to 20 miles per hour. we could see locally heavier gusts as we get the sundowner winds in the evening. humidity has increased 20% to 40%. temperatures will drop to the

mid 80s for today as the area of high pressure retreats to the east little bit. that's the good news, it will take the dry lightning strikes with it. meanwhile in the bay area, we have a welcome change headed our way. area of low pressure will fizzle out. the thunderstorm activity will move well to the north. it won't be as humid today. we have a return on the onshore flow. waking up with flight delays out of sfo. those should lift at about 10:00 a.m. today. we'll keep you updated throughout the "today" show as we always do. inland 87 degrees, bay side 75 and 65 at the coast. comfortable conditions in san francisco. i'll have your seven day outlook and a look at the weekend forecast up next. first let's check on your drive with mike inouye. >> good morning. we've seen the volume build up on the roadways in the last week, week and a half. right now we've seen the san mateo bridge. it's moving smoothly through the toll plaza. as you look at the map, we have slowing approaching the toll plaza. a crash reported blocking lane

number three. a minor injury crash. they should move that to the shoulder. they may have to hold the car there until the ambulance arrives. meanwhile, the hour shows the slowdown from 238 toward a street. we have the speeds coming down into the 50 range. that is an issue for your morning commute. we also have more slowing out of the tri-valley heading toward the dublin interchange as well as 84 through livermore and sunol and where they merge 680 and 84. we see the slowing as well in toward fremont. a live look outside shows how oakland is shaping up. no problems north 880 past the coliseum. southbound side at oak street coming through downtown, reports that there may be a semi truck in lanes. that could be slowing you down downtown off the bay bridge. 6:34. antioch police are asking for the public's help in finding a man who stand his 16-year-old

pregnant girlfriend. investigators say 118-year-old[ johnny madden stand the girl and also the 6-month-old puppy. the girl and her unborn child were not seriously hurt. the dog needed merge surgery and had part of its liver removed. this was a wild scene in the oak wood hills. a home splintered and charred after a car crashes into the home and sparks a fire. the fire burned for 30 minutes until firefighters called pg&e to turn the nat al gas off that was fueling the flames. an ambulance was requested for an elderly person on scene. at this point it's unclear why the car ended up smashing into the house. union city police are looking for a man who exposed himself in front of a mother and three daughters inside a busy burger king last month. police released this sketch of the suspect. officials say he's a white man

in his mid 50s, approximately six feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds. he was last seen wearing a tan hat with a chin strap as you see here and also eyeglasses. police say he might be involved in other similar incidents in the bay area. oakland police calling this one an old school crime with a new twist this morning. the department now warning everybody in the bay area to be on the lookout for fake utility workers. richard cameron and allan carr says a man dressed up as a.jáñ worker came to their home on tuesday afternoon. this is an upscale crocker highlands neighborhood. the man said he was there to check the easement in the back yard for a neighborhood project. the homeowner telling us he was very nice and very professional$ but while he was there checking the back yard with them, another man was inside the home stealing $5,000 to $10,000 in jewelry and cash. the victims didn't realize they q' were already gone. >> we've lived here 45 years and

welcome back. it is 6:40. investigators are seeing if working an insane amount of hours played a role in the death of a 21-year-old bank of america intern. moritz erhardt collapsed and died in the shower during what the banking industry calls a magic round about. that's when a taxi drives you home after a 24-hour shift, waits outside while you shower and change and then drives you back for a day shift. the head of international communications for bank of america say people in0 investmt banking sometimes work long hours, but didn't comment on employee work patterns. this morning authorities in

flames. the fire has grown to 25 square miles and has forced the shutdown of state route 120. that's the freeway into the park. this morning the number of bay area firefighters are helping?[ battle those flames. brian hickey from our nbc station in sacramento is live now with all the new details for us. brian, we can see the smoke all around you. >> reporter: yeah, we're right along highway 120 right now. that's looking off towards yosemite, about 15 miles or so to the entrance of yosemite national park. a while ago i saw a team from marin county. let me show you what they're dealing with over the side of the roadway. this is what it looks like pretty much everywhere you go here through mariposa county. incredibly steep, burned out, falling rocks, falling debris. it's a very difficult place for fire crews as they battle this very aggressive blaze that is now over 16,000 acres, more than

1,000 firefighters up here on the line. the video tells the story the best. huge flames up here rolling up the hillside as crews -- it's so steep, they can't go right at the fire. they're having to take a stand some distance away and trying to build containment lines to protect homes and stop the fire. so far that's been to no avail, only 5% containment on this fire as they continue to go day after day and fight it. the big concern right now, the fire is growing in an area called packard canyon and to the west where they have advisory evacuation orders from 2500 residents. a lot of bay area folks have second homes, vacation homes. and permanent residents have been told to pack up and leave their home in the hands of firefighters. where the buildings are extraordinarily well protected, there's a lot of sprinklers and defensible space. but that doesn't take care of all the trees around us. tao take the trees away, it's not camp anymore.

>> reporter: take a look at this. we were in the incident command post yesterday when a wall of fire came bearing down on the camp. fortunately nothing in the camp was damaged. huge flames came rolling up the hillside. it's a place where fire crews go to relax. suddenly they were jumping out of their seats, putting on fire gear and trying to protect the nerve center. they had5,fñ a 6:00 a.m. briefi. we're waiting for details from that meeting to find out what the plan will be for today. i can tell you under these weather conditions, pretty much exactly the way it's been over the last few days, calm in the morning, hot and dry in the afternoon. that's what kindled the fire back up. they'll do the best to protect the homes on the west side. brian hickey, back to you. >> brian, we appreciate your live report. >> unfortunately a reality up and down california all summer long. these guys can't seem to get a break. >> no, they certainly can't. like i reported earlier, 190,000 acres so far. we're not even tallying in the

new acreage when it comes to the fire. this is what we're working with. there is improvement in the weather. you can see the lightning moving to the north. that's going to be the trend as we head throughout the next couple days. that's good news because that means we're not going to see dry lightning strikes. as the winds pick up, we get the sundowners in the area.c/ we could see traveling embers in the area. most of the fire activity so far this season has been down in southern california. this is what we're working with when it comes to red flag warnings. none posted for the bay area. the last one was in the north bay. idaho and oregon still have the dry heat. that's where the lightning is headed today. our resources are running thin. in the bay area, the situation will dramatically improve. the jet stream finally taking a dip to the south. that means plenty of onshore flow, low clouds moving inland for this morning. if you have the little ones

headed back to school, for instance, hayward unified school district is headed back to school. we are seeing a mostly< cloud start to the day. by noon, clear conditions, 78 by 3:00 p.m. a lot of the cloud cover will clear quickly. out in hayward for today, temperatures on the,@c mild sin san jose, 78 degrees. perfection there. 63 for san francisco and 71 in santa cruz. you can still hit the beach comfortably. after all, we're getting into late august now. and your days to hit the beach comfortably as you know are numbered. friday to saturday, 89 degrees. comfortable conditions inland. sunday we'll hit about 86 degrees. enjoy monday. we drop off even more so and, yeah, we start fall 26 days from tuesday. so yes, we talk about the autumnal equinox. >> wow. looking here toward west 92.

the san mateo bridge, the span itself moves very smoothly. look at the map approaching the toll plaza for that bay crossing, we have the issue, the crash still reported in lane number three, still waiting because there are minor injuries reported there. we do see slowing as you head over from the hayward side toward that toll plaza itself. again, you saw the live shot, smooth drive toward the peninsula. here is 880, slowing down through hayward and out of san leandro down into union city because of the volume out of the castro valley y. the build is happening right now. also south 880 toward oak street, a disabled big rig in lanes causing all the slowing from 980 toward the scene. heading to the bay bridge, a pretty typical build. a little slowing through downtown. not a problem for berkeley and emeryville, speeds in the 50s. that's great news. the bay bridge toll plaza has the backup. you'll see the volume continue to build through next week when cal comes back into session. and berkeley city streets will

be an issue. north 101 from capital past the airport shows slower spots. 280 showing an increased volume. that's great stuff. look at this northbound 87 also slow from capital expressway into downtown. this hits and it will stick for the morning commute. this is a problem, a very slow drive from 85 threw downtown. i'll quickly move over toward the city streets as well. be careful and plan a little extra time. you can't be in a rush through that. looking live to the peninsula, smooth 101 fast ravenswood shopping center. we talked about school coming back online, ravenswood, menlo park back in session. palo alto already there. through the school zones. 6:516789 new this morning, rescuers had to pull an unconscious driver out of his suv after it crashed into a wall along highway 101. the chp tweeted this picture overnight from the scene. officers say the driver had been speeding when he crashed on 101

southbound in palo alto near the oregon expressway on-ramp. the toyota 4 runner hit the highway wall leaving the driver unconscious. the chp blocked the three left lanes of 101 while they pulled the driver out. no word yet on his condition. firefighters battling a house fire in hayward making an unexpected discovery. the surprise coming in the form of hundreds of marijuana plants. we have video from overnight. crews were called to reports of a gar rarnlg fire on laurie way after 10:30 last night. that's when they went into the house. fire officials say they found what appears to be a9(tñ mariju grow operation. they say they found plants some four to five feet tall in several areas of the house including three bedrooms and inside the garage. no one was home at the time of the fire. the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation this morning. but officials say it appears to have started outside near an electrical meter. the man charged in the dis

appearance of sierra lamar is back in court. 21-year-old antolin garcia torres will be in court this afternoon. his hearing last month was postponed after prosecutors said evidence was still being delivered to his attorneys. garcia torres is charged with the murder and kidnapping of 15-year-old sierra lamar of morgan hill. he's also facing three additional counts of carjacking and attempted kidnapping of three women from two morgan hill grocery store parking lots in 2009. for an entire week, hannah anderson lived on the run held against her will by a family friend. now anderson is sharing her story exclusively with nbc. this morning we have a preview of that conversation before it airs. today in the bay's bob redell is live in the newsroom with that story that you'll only see on nbc. bob, good morning. >> good morning, jon. hannah anderson, the soirnth california teenager kidnapped earlier this month addressed critics who questioned her behavior. specifically she explained this morning in an exclusive

conversation on the "today" show why she exchanged letters and texts with her captor james dimaggio prior to her abduction. remember dimaggio was a family friend. in the text anderson aid she was coordinating pickup from cheerleading camp. the letters she says were exchanged about a year ago when she was not getting along with her mother. >> me and him would talk about how to deal with it and i'd tell him how i felt about it president and he helped me through it. they weren't anything bad. they were just to help me through tough times. earlier this month dimaggio killed anderson's mother and 8-year-old brother and rigged his house to burn with their bodies inside. he then abducted the 16-year-old girl leading to an amber alert ak across six western states including california. it was a week later that horseback riders spotted the pair in idaho. fbi agents shot and killed dimaggio, rescued anderson. she said shortly after her

36-year-old chin nguyen. he was inside a restaurant on alum rock avenue monday night when he and two other men were shot. the other victims are expected to survive. the "mercury news" reporting nguyen worked at june ter networks and lived with his wife and 3-year-old daughter. nguyen's wife is in her third trimester of pregnancy with a son on the way. nguyen's death marks the city's 31st homicide of the year. the mountain view police department is crediting one of its canines with a major meth bust. here is zeus sitting next to the stash. he sniffed out two pounds of meth while searching a home in san jose yesterday. he apparently found the meth inside a hidden come part nltd inside a vehicle. he found the drug money and a loaded handgun right next to it. a second nevada psychiatric hospital under investigation for
