"today in the bay's" melissa

mole lay is live with more. >> nice to see you this morning. this is a new pew survey just out. this brand new information. it shows fewer than half americans, about 45% of the country has made real progress towards racial equality, about the same number, 49% saying much more remains to be done. the majority of blacks who were surveyed saying they're treated less fairly by whites by the police, the court system and the public school system. a sense of progress that black americans felt in 2009 since the president has elected seems to have reversed itself according to the study. one in four saying their situation is better now than it was back then. back to you. >> all right, melissa. thanks so much. we can tell you one bay area

woman had the pleasure of being in washington 50 years ago for that landmark speech. gay cobb at the time was a young new yorker who set out on a bus ride to washington, d.c. to hear dr. king's addresses. now as ceo of the oakland private industry council, she's looking back on her experience and she says it absolutely helped shape her life. >> to be part of that generation and to have observed the changes in america since then is just profoundly humbling. >> one can only imagine what it would have been like to be in the crowd listening to that live and in person. cobb says she is grateful to have had the experience. >> dr. king's "i have a dream" speech in 1953 was precede bid his appearance on "meet the press." that interview will be replayed in its entirety right here on nbc bay area.
5:45 am
"meet the press" moderator david gregory talked about the significance of that television appearance and what we can learn from it today. >> well, it's the meaning of the dream 50 years later. that's where we pick up on "meet the press" this sunday. it is referencing and seeing this appearance on "meet the press" and 50 years later talking about what the dream meant then. what does the american dream mean now? >> well, you can watch our "meet the press" special edition "remembering the dream" on sunday morning, 7:30. we will also have much more on our wesh site, nbcbayarea.com, including a slideshow with photos from the historic 1963 march. >> we absolutely recommend catching that one or at least putting it on the dvr. now the latest on the rim fire burning near yosemite. we learned the fire size has jumped to more than 100,000 acres, almost the entire side of san jose. brirn hickey from our sister station in sacramento has the

latest on the front lines. how is it looking? >> jon, we're here in incident command where they're getting ready for the morning briefing. this is the latest map. the fire line is huge. those of you that know the area, here is the reservoir, this is the eastern side of the fire. now a couple miles from the reservoir. the big thing we're looking at this morning. look at the acreage, yesterday morning at 54,000 acres, this morning at 105,620 acres as they get ready to formulate their plan to the day. the fire is blowing to the north and the east. but the big concern is over on the west side. you heard about the talk of pine mountain lake, clements road. this is where firefighters took a very aggressive stand yesterday to protect the homes as the fire jumped the river and started racing the canyon wall under perfect burning conditions out there. talking to veteran firefighters, they were commenting two days ago about a 37,000 acre burn in one day. now talking more than 50,000 acres in one day.
5:47 am
this fire is showing no signs of slowing down. all they can do now is try to steer it away from the homes as it continues to burn unchecked towards yosemite national park. talking with a fire behavior expert on scene he says there's nothing changing in the forecast other than the wind coming our way and the burn conditions will stay the way they've been over the last few days. not a good thing for firefighters. it's sad to see so many people from the bay area rushing to get their vacation homes to make sure their precious items are safe. >> it's so rough. it's gotten worse as opposed to getting better, the containment shrinking way down. the woman who knows about all the winds in the area here near yosemite, meteorologist christina loren, what are the firefighters up against today? >> more of the same. good morning to both of you. i want to show where the monsoonal moisture is headed for, mostly over arizona and nevada. this is going to keep winds in

place. the only thing that has improved is that our winds are not coming offshore, they're not moving from land to sea and pumping and drying out along the way. in fact, they're coming right off the pacific so they have more moisture. we're still dealing with gusty winds, with two competing weather systems in the area. he just updated us, 100,000 plus acres burned so far. elevation is 3,000 feet. whenever you go higher in the atmosphere, you lose the friction at the surface and the winds are able to move around quite a bit easier. for the next 24 hours this is what we're expecting, winds west-southwest gusting 10 to 20 miles per hour. the gusts are taking traveling embers. the embers ignite few fires from time to time, making it more difficult as the fire continues to burn out of control. the humidity this morning is about 40 to 50%. later this afternoon we see those drying conditions and yesterday we were in the teens in the evening hours. so that's going to pose a problem for them later on today as well.
5:49 am
at least this morning with the high relative humidities they're able to get some work done. temperatures in the mid 80s at the elevation of about 3,000 feet. still it is hot out there. our thoughts and prayers going out to all the firefighters, everybody involved with that massive fire that's going to be in the news at least for the next week or two. hopefully they can get it knocked down soon. 60 in livermore, '61 in san jose, 59 to start the day in gilroy. you can see winds will be moving from the ocean over the land, that's going to transport cool ocean air all the way inland for today, keeping us nice and moist here in the bay area. temperatures are going to be very representative of that onshore flow. 75 degrees at fremont. 79 in redwood city. here is what we're expecting as we head throughout the remainder of the week into the upcoming weekend. it is right around the corner now. temperatures will drop off for the entire state of california as we see more of a west early flow everywhere which is also good news for the firefighting efforts in yosemite.
5:50 am
for us here we're talking about the upper 80s saturday. that's your beach day sunday. 84 degrees and we stay steady about every single day this week, finally getting the august norms. yeah, we know september is right around the corner. that's when we start fall. get out and enjoy it if you can. >> we'll take you to the south bay where traffic is flowing nicely, no major issues or slowing. we have the first burst that shows north 101 north of 680. that's the typical pattern. remember we've seen that south bay traffic flow, the volume really build up over the last week and a half. that will be the case today as well. friday light is going to be a relative term. we should see a okay flow of traffic. south 880 -- south 680 fine approaching 237. south 880 we have a disabled vehicle reported that has cleared from lanes. still activity so i'm leaving it on the maps. south 680 and mission boulevard, that's where there are reports of a car going possibly 100

miles per hour before it crashed. you can use auto mall parkway to the north and stay well clear of any of the activity there. also a little slowing for 84 through livermore and 580 starting to build. the volume of traffic the issue. the earlier crews have cleared. of course, the slowing coming in to livermore as well. watch for the typical pattern. we'll zoom in to 580 and 980 here. a crash involving a motorcycle and pickup truck. sounds like major damage to the pickup truck. we don't have major issues other than slowing right now. we'll track that one lane blocked. we'll end with the map as i sent it back to you with the warning that 580 is the problem this morning so far. >> mike, thanks so much. 5:51. the high-speed sailing drama continues on the san francisco bay today. emirates team new zealand and italy's luna rossa squaring off in race six of the louis vuitton

final. right now the kiwis have the lead. the winner will race in the america's cup next month. you can catch it at 1:00 this afternoon on comcast 186 or over the air on channel 11-2. speaking of the america's cup we could learn whether the championship races will started on september 7th as scheduled. an african-american sailing group filed a lawsuit against the golden gate yacht club claiming the club denied the group the chance to compete this year. the hearing is taking place today to determine if a preliminary injunction should be granted. if it is, no racing could take place before a trial is held, therefore, pushing back the start of the america's cup. >> who could have guessed we're talking high drama that had nothing to do with the racing? it's all about off-water things. >> 5:52. we'll tell you about the oakland raiders beating incredible odds. he's ready to take the field. we'll have his story coming up next.

turned on. judging by the traffic flow, the smooth flow down the eastshore freeway, that's fine. west 580 is the big concern, crash. and reports that a motorcycle was totally destroyed. still looking for an update on injuries. it looks like the pickup and motorcycle have major damage. that's why there's all that slowing heading from 580 toward 980 and toward the maze. back to you. >> thanks, mike. the time is 5:57. still ahead, we'll tell you about three attacks on three separate women happening in one single month. the latest assault that has santa clara police looking for a possible connection in those crimes. a domestic terror plot foiled by investigators in las vegas. the possible bay area connection to one of the suspect still ahead.
