now. >> the biggest concert ever. >> we have a chopper flying above. we have ed hughes in that chopper looking down for us. kind of give us a sense of the crowd. >> i'll tell you matt. we're about 2,000 feet above rockefeller center here in new york city. you can see in the center part of your screen, we are looking at least 1,000, if not 2 to 3,000 people here on the plaza between 48th street and 50th street. we have been watching this crowd grow and grow here. we have been out there for an hour and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. if you're thinking about coming down here you want to do it soon because you are not going to get a good view at this point. but all of these teenage boys and girls here to see one direction here in new york city. >> and by the way, ed, you're not normally in the chopper

during your shift. simon is initially up there, and do you want to tell us where he is today? >> i have a feeling kai is down there on the plaza. it's not to be very exciting for him. >> we're happy to have him here. ed, thank you very much. >> the concert is coming up in our 8:30 half hour. first, a lot of news to get to as well. good morning everyone. a massive wildfire near yosemite national park is burning out of control. the rim fire broke out last week, and today more than 1,300 firefighters have been unable to stop its quick spread. miguel almaguer is in california where evacuation orders are in place. miguel, good morning. >> tamron, good morning. the growth potential for this fire is considered extreme. we're only 15 miles per hour from yosemite national park and flames are moving in that direction.

leaping from trees, and racing across ridge tops, and the fire raged on with no end in sight. >> it's a very extreme fire. you'll see it increase. >> reporter: thursday, this plays tripled in size, the governor declaring a state of emergency. nearly 2,000 firefighters are on attack, using everything they can to battle the blaze. on this ridge, crews are using fire to fight fire. they're setting this hill afire on purpose so it can close in on this blaze burning in that direction. making the fire burn itself out. with 200 homes destroyed, thousands of structures still threatened. evacuations have been ordered. summer camps closed early. >> i'm shook up but it's in good god's hands. >> reporter: flames are heading east threatening yosemite national park. for now, just smoke. no immediate danger.

nature's beauty not far from mother nature's fury. this fire is 1% contained and it has cost some $3 million to fight so far, and across the country it cost $1 billion to fight all fires. tamron. all right miguel. thank you very much. now to syria where a civil war sharply divided senior white house advisors over a moral delima. how far should the u.s. go to stop the violence when actions could lead to war with syria? president obama addressed that issue in an interview earlier this morning. >> that starts getting to core national interests that the united states has. both in terms of us making sure that weapons of mass destruction are not proliferating, as well as needing to protect our allies, our bases in the region. this is something that is going to require america's attention and hopefully the entire international community's attention. >> for the latest on the

information in syria let's go to nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engel, in cairo with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. the administration is weighing it's options trying to figure out what happened in syria and who was responsible before taking any action, let alone military action. the un secretary general says if it's proved that chemical weapons were used by any party it would be a crime against humanity and should result in serious consequences. meanwhile, russia which is an ally of the syrian regime has joined other nations in calling u.n. inspectors who are in damascus right now to be allowed access to the areas where these alleged atrocities took place, and the u.s. also said today that 1 million children have

been made refugees by the on going war in syria. >> we have more on that. in an exclusive interview with ann curry, antonio gutierrez said the war in syria reached a shameful milestone. as mentioned now, 1 million children have become refugees. >> i understand you want to announce an important milestone in the crisis in syria? >> yes, as a matter of fact we have unfortunately reached 1 million refugee children that have to flee the country. we have about 2 million children displaced inside of syria, and we have millions of others trapped by the conflict. i think we need to recognize that syria faces the risk of a lost generation. >> you can see more of ann's interview on nbcnews.com. authorities in lass vegas say two people in police custody were plotting to kidnap officers, put them on trial and execute them in a vacant house. for more on this alleged plot we go to pete williams in washington, d.c. with the latest. pete, what can you tell us. >> police in las vegas say the two were arrested after an undercover investigation that

lasted several months. authorities charged david allen, age 42, and another with attempted murder. both planned to follow police cars and if an officer made a traffic stop the two would take the policeman away to be tied up and killed. they were members of a radical extremist group that doesn't believe police have any legitimate power. >> i feel that they are going far beyond what the constitution allows. i'm in jail because the government with undercover agents want me here. >> authorities said an undercover policeman took them to a house where they began building their own jail. they're said to be members of the movement whose members have been known to kill police before. >> all right, pete, thank you very much. now to wall street and what is moving the markets. jackie joins us with the latest.

>> good morning. good morning to you, we are looking at microsoft shares. the positive reaction. share holders thinking the new leadership could reinvigorate the company. the news comes just months after microsoft announced a broad restructuring plan to capitalize on mobile technology, tamron. jackie, thank you. caught on camera, a motorcyclist meets his match on a canadian highway. take a look at this. a bear runs across the road. not a chicken but a bear. the motorcyclist could not avoid it. it happened in vancouver. the helmet camera video was just released by the police. the bear ran away unharmed. the motorcyclist will be okay as well. that is incredible. it's now 7:09, matt and savannah.

kids are playing in it. they actually had -- this is just outside of littleton colorado. they had to break out snowplows to get the hail off of the streets. unbelievable stuff and guess what, there's more rough weather coming from the southwest. parts of the southwest had flash flooding. why? you can already see, we have more rain and showers and thunderstorms firing up. we have a tropical depression off the mexico coast. this thing is going to push moisture into the southwest and it's going to bring flash flooding over the next 96 hours. we're talking about a real mess coming anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of rain by monday morning. some areas picking up to 5 inches from southern california into southern nevada and parts of new mexico and arizona as well. and that's what's going on. we're going to bring your forecast to you, but first, these messages. 9 out of 10. 9 out of ten? that's great. ♪

the agreement but it's unclear what the mayor could get in return and if that will spark a backlash. in a hint of what's expected to come, cell phone video shows bob filner leaving city hall with paxed boxes in the backseat. it happened moments after city leaders and filner's attorney emerged with three days of mediation. >> we have reached a proposed resolution. >> but they're barred from discussing the deal until the city council meets this afternoon behind closed doors. >> when we have something to share we'll get back to the public. >> reporter: the political science professor says filner's resignation was likely his primary negotiating tool. >> so we could also say, giver me a deal and i'll leave, and other than that go ahead and try to recall me. >> reporter: the big question, what might he get from the city in return. >> he wants to make sure if he leaves office he doesn't spend the next six years or six months

in court paying out money or going bankrupt or going to jail. >> reporter: last month filner apologized for his behavior and promised to get therapy. >> the behavior i engaged in is wrong. >> reporter: they're now getting signatures in the wake of sexual harassment allegations from 17 women. attorney gloria allred represents the only accuser to file a lawsuit so far. she says she doesn't know the details of the deal negotiated this week but criticized anything that gives him taxpayer money. >> it would be a slap in the face to his victims to see him get anything from the city of san diego. his parting give should be good riddance. >> reporter: before today's closed door meeting, the public will have a chance to comment. if the mayor does re-sign, a special election will be held within 90 days.

savannah? >> thank you. lisa bloom is today's legal analysts, and her mother, gloria allred, represents one of the women suing filner. >> good morning. >> this will be hard for taxpayers to swallow. explain how sit that san diego would be on the hook for some of these legal claims when in some cases this behavior took place before he was even mayor. >> that's right. what mayor filner had was leverage. the recall process in san diego is complicated and time consuming. he's a one-man liability problem for the city, and they want to get hid of him so they don't have to face more claims, and the bottom line is they may have to pay him money for him to walk away. >> is it your view he was holding on to this seat as a negotiating tactic? >> probably. he does face tens of millions of dollars in liability. one person has come forward, and about 17 people made claims against him.

haven't sued him yet. he is facing a catastrophic financial outcome. >> and very quickly, these lawsuits, if they come, can still go forward and the settlement with the city has nothing to do with that. >> that's right. the lawsuits go on. >> lisa bloom, thank you very much. thank you. there's fall out tied to thursday's bombshell announcement here on "today" that the army private sentenced in the wikileaks scandal plans to live as a woman. peter alexander is in washington. good morning to you. >> matt, good morning. that sentence is 35 years in prison and the inmate known as bradley manning is waking up today inside the maximum security military prison. also this morning we're learning new details about what the 25-year-old who wants to be called chelsea manning wants for her future. for all the explosive secrets that bradley manning leaked, the most stunning revelation was personal.

delivered in a letter read by savannah here on "today." >> i want everyone to know the real me. i am chelsea manning. i am a female. >> reporter: this photo of the army private wearing a women's wig and lipstick was presented as proof of a gender identity disorder. he wants to live as a woman and begin hormone therapy treatment as soon as possible. that will be a long shot. they don't provide the treatment or sex reassignment surgery. he has not yet requested a sex change. as for the future, manning could be eligible for parole in seven years. >> she wants to get a degree. she wants to hopefully find somebody that she loves. get married. perhaps have a family. >> reporter: within hours of thursday's bombshell chelsea manning was trending on twitter worldwide, with outrage and sympathy. you guys can laugh about bradley chelsea manning now but when our tax dollars pay for gender

surgery he'll be laughing at us. and another, humbled again by chelsea's courage and honesty. >> now kristen beck, the self-proclaimed warrior princess said for this person whether male or female to use gender identity to act badly is a slap in the case. the anoun tphoupbsment raced unusual questions on how to refer to manning. manning asked to be called she, not he. >> people need to understand that this is for real. a person that has gender disforia wants to live as the other. it requires psychiatric treatment and sometimes surgery but not necessarily. >> one other concern is manning's safety, and the arm yes reports that transgender prisoners are more likely to be assaulted by other inmates, but officials say they have taken the necessary steps to protect those prisoners like manning who

may be at a higher risk. >> peter alexander in washington. thank you very much. we talked about this yesterday after your interview. i said, is there a chance that she, as we're now referring to her, would be transferred at some point to a woman's prison? >> i think it would be far down the road and probably if she had that sex reassignment surgery that we don't know if she actually wants and by the way, the army said it doesn't provide hormone therapy or gender surgery so if they want to go down that road they'll have to sue to get there probably. >> meanwhile, coming up, much more ahead on a friday morning including nancy kerrigan. she is speaking out in an exclusive live interview for the first time. she'll talk about the controversial trial tied to her father's death. then we'll shift gears and head outside and join our one direction crowd. it is a big one out on the plaza. but first, this is "today" on nbc.

lines again after being attacked while training. the vicious assault was planned by tonya harding's ex-husband. >> pretty up he set and angry that someone would do this. >> kerrigan went on to win a silver medal in 1994 as her overjoyed parents cheered on. >> brenda and daniel kerrigan's daughter has seized the moment. >> kerrigan moved beyond the devastating episode. her skating career thrived. but in 2010 tragedy struck again. her 70-year-old father died of heart failure in his home after an altercation there with his son mark, nancy's brother. prosecutors charged mark with involuntary manslaughter in his father's death. >> my family has never believed at all that my brother had anything to do with my father's death. >> cleared of manslaughter, mark kerrigan was convicted of

assault and battery for the attack on his father. a family legacy with much joy, great pain, and many chapters yet to be written. >> the fact is what everyone remembers is that nancy kerrigan was the good girl. >> nancy kerrigan joins us now exclusively. how have you been. >> good, good to see you again. >> you kept a low provile at least about speaking out. how have you been? what's life been like? >> pretty busy. i drive my kids everywhere. i have three kids. matthew is 16, brian is 8 and nicole is 5, going into kindergarten. so i don't know -- >> you're a mom. >> i drive and drive and cook and clean, you know, that's basically what i do now. >> how is your family doing? it's been tough since 2010 when your dad passed away after this altercation with your brother, living through the trial, i know you and your mom stood by mark through the entire thing.

you didn't think he should be charged in it? what toll has it taken on your family? >> we have always been a strong family and close nit. my mom is as blunt as they come and honest and she tells you what she thinks and how it is. yeah, he shouldn't have been charged and then my dad had a heart attack and that's it. since then we did the same thing we have always done. take things one day at a time and you get through it and life is challenging and hard. we stick together, and, you know, move on. >> mark served time in jail for this. he was released about a year ago. how is he doing? has he gotten the help he needs? he had difficult times in the past. >> yeah, he moved on. he's working every day. gets up at like 5:00 and is dpon by 5:30 in the morning working and just getting on with his life. you know, it's -- i'm sure not easy when it's brought up like this because unfortunately being

my sister it's brought up again which is too bad for him because he wants to move on with his life. >> the other thing we mention in that piece is it has been nearly 20 years since the episode in detroit where that happened. >> it was the '94 olympics. >> where you got clubbed on the knee with that baton. does it seem like it's been 20 years? when you look back and saw that tape? what's it like to watch that video? >> i guess it's like watching anything sort of horrific. it's disturbing to see anybody in pain and to think it's me -- >> a little bit of an out of body experience. >> a lifetime ago. but it hurts to see anybody in such pain. it's a long time ago. i moved on. >> i understand that in the 20

years since then people seem to say one or two things. either should have won the gold medal or congratulations on the gold medal. it's funny how people's memories get blurred. >> i only got second place by .1 or something. people thought i would have won. people think she must have won. they think that. it was exciting and i was into going and competing again after being attacked was such a thrill to be part of the olympic team again and representing our country. >> i remember that night and those games after the incident in detroit how much attention and pressure was on you that night of the finals. it must have been overwhelming. >> i guess. but i was sort of -- i don't know how you can get in that

total focus. you can train and you can learn to focus and you can learn to do that but it's to a different level when it's such high level pressure. just it's that -- i think only a few people maybe get to but through adversity, you know, through having to work through something. it's a little more than just concentration. i don't know how you get there without someone forcing you into it. >> well, you look great. i'm glad life is going to well as a mom. still skating some in the fall and winter? >> yeah, i have pretty much done almost every year i've done events. jerry puts on different events. he has a skating show he is doing this winter and producing. but i get to come down to new york and support him. i was here last night at the taste of tennis. he started world tennis day. a lot of tennis in our family too. >> great to see you. nice to catch up. 7:38. let's get a check of the weather from al. matt, thank you so much. we're here at rockefeller plaza

good to see you. let me introduce you to some big fans of good morning to you. it is 8:26. i'm marla tellez. more people left homeless by that devastating fire at a redwood city apartment complex are suing this morning. so far, at least 22 complaints have been filed against the owner of the hallmark house apartments on woodside road. attorneys for the residents say at least six more complaints will be filed soon. fire officials say the fire was likely accidental but the building was not properly maintained or inspected. is it a friday light morning commute? check in with mike on the slow down in oakland? >> friday light overall but we do have your trouble spots overall. more volume around the bay, oakland north 880 past the coliseum, jamming up, for a friday, relatively speaking, shouldn't be quite this slow.

>> the ricky walker, we're calling it. >> we're happy with this. we move in to the app. he's a typical guy. bacon, bacon, bacon. that's all he wants. i want summer veggies. so we're compromising with our warm tomato salad with a corn and bacon vinaigrette. >> beautiful fresh tomatoes. crispy bacon. goat cheese gets melted on top. >> so then for our main course, again, we want to make everybody happy. i get to grill meat. we make a pretty salad and throw the grilled meat on top of the pretty salad. we'll make a marinade for the steaks. garlic, soy sauce. >> a pinch or all of it? >> all of it. >> whisk that all together and then over the steak. >> that was fast. >> leave that to marinade. it can sit 30 minutes or overnight. >> look whose veggies are cooking here. >> with the steak salad, i want some beautiful summer peaches. grilled onions.
