demonstrations in the streets and the violence associated with the march on washington which of course did not come the pass, and medgar evers had been murdered and the fire hoses turned on people in birmingham, and so you had the backdrop to this speech. so you will hear from dr. king in the interview some of the themes. he wanted to speak to the largely white audience that he felt would be watching on television to make the case for civil rights, to make the case for economic equality, and feeling like this was a big moment. and to sort of see him in an interview format like this was fascinating. >> david, so many of the viewers were not born back then and in fact, some of the viewers' parents were not born back then, and is there a relevance to today's world from what you see in the interview? >> well, it is the meaning of the dream 50 years later which is where we pick up on "meet the

press" this sunday. it is referencing and seeing this interview on "meet the press" and picking up what this dream meant then and what the american dream means now and not in just terms for civil rights and equality for just african-americans, but all americans in the sense of the promise in the country, and that is the resonance of what it is about and the extent to which what americans were grappling with what equality meant, and how dr. king was giving voice to that. that is the struggle of the years and race is not any easier today for all of the progresses that have been made, it is a central part of the american experience. so i think that is what the resonance, and i was not alive for this appearance on "meet the press" nor the speech, but it is a youthful reminder of the history to engage and watch dr. king in his own words. >> thank you, david gregory. remember "i have a dream" airs
