good evening. we've on a special time because of sunday night football. we'll have more on the 49ers game a bit later in this newscast. but, first, more violence in oakland. four people are recovering after being shot in east oakland. two of the victims are children, a 12-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl. the shooting happened in the middle of the day just before

2:30 this afternoon. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, police are still searching for the suspect or suspects in this case. streets were blocked off as police investigated the incident which left a man, a woman, an 8-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl injured. all have been taken to local hospitals. oakland police was busy at the crime scene but just stop today give us an update on the 12-year-old's condition. >> everything seems to be okay. but we want to find out how that happened. >> reporter: police are still investigating what led up to the shooting. if you have any information, you are asked to call oakland police. again, two adults and two children are shot. all are expected to survive. children in oakland have been victims of shooting multiple times this year since january, 8

people under the age of 18 have been killed in the city. live in oakland, nbc bay area news. >> kimberly, thank you. in union city, police are searching for a gunman who shot and killed two minnesota early in morning. one was pronounced dead at the scene and the other at the hospital. the first two killings this year in union city. we have new information tonight on in shooting death in san jose yesterday afternoon. a neighbor's surveillance camera captured on tape. we have edited the video. as you can see, the victim is riding a bicycle as it pulls into a parking lot in downtown san jose. the gunman is seen running up to the victim, hitting him and then shooting him. moments later, another man on a bicycle rides up, gets off his bike and witnesses say he fired more shots.

that's what's happening right now. witnesses say he fired more shots and then fled the scene. at that point, several people run to help the victim and call police. we spoke with one victim who identified herself as the victim's aunt. she wants people to know that her nephew was a good person. today, friends and family left candles and flowers at the site of the killing. police have not released the identity of the victim. firefighterins are arriving by e thousands. at the latest check, the fire has burned 144,000 acres. almost 5,000 have been evacuated. we'll find monte frances with an update.

>> good evening. strong winds are pushing the fire in this general direction, almost 3,000 firefighters from across the state are battling the fire. half of them are right here hoping to hold back the flames from this small chunty. >> with the rim fire edging closer to the city, firefighters made a big change in their tactics in the last 24 hours, setting up a new base camp in the normally sleepy town with the population of just 2,000. the city is under an evacuation order, but only half of its residents have left town. >> you can see that we're not eminent yet. >> today, strong winds pushed the fire larger than the city of chicago farther northwest. more than 20 structures have burned, including some homes. almost 5,000 more are

threatened. >> we're trying to make sure the fire stays where it is. we're making sure it doesn't get any bigger than absolutely necessary. >> the fire is burning dangerously close to the reservoir where the city gets 85% of its water. the fire partially burned two of pg&e's hydroelectric plants. damage is estimated at 600,000 tlars. among the thousands offire fighters, a strike team from san francisco. >> when we get called to assist somebody that's in need, the same way we would if we're in the city of san francisco. >> at yosemite, they closed the

lodge and campground because of smokey conditions. those that are not in eminent danger, the sequois remain closed. the park is open and mostly unaffected by the fire. the real concern is the small, rural communities. still in the fire's path. >> we've got land out there that we played in. my kids, my grand kids, my mother, my grandmother and we'll never see that again, you know. it's burned. >> and with the fire just 7% contained, there is a long road ahead for the firefighters here. the camp operated by the city of berkley was destroyed by the fire. pg&e says there are water reserves on hand if the fire disrupts san francisco's water supply. monotee francis, mbc bay area

news. >> we've been tweeting about that situation and people are very upset. lots of memories at that camp. chblgts . okay, the damage, we'll have to see when the fire moves out of that area. there are a lot of folks not evacuating? how come? >> reporter: well, we talked to a few people today who said they have been through this before and nothing's happened. so they just want to wait and see what happens. one woman told us she would not be willing to leave until she sees the fire come over the ridge. >> and i understand they've been through it before, but, of course, we've been through it around here, as well. but the fire can change directions very quickly. this isn't a mandatory

evacuation? >> reporter: well, it's an e evacuation. and the pio, the public information officer, said he doesn't like to use the word mandatory. if someone refuses to leave, there's really not much they can do. but for their own safety, the firefighters would really appreciate it if people would evacuate. >> montey francis, thank you very much. the fire has grown so large that it's creating some of its own weather systems, as well, making it more challenging for the firefighters. >> you said it perfectly. the wind pattern is what it's all about. you've heard that the acreage has been burned. again, just because the wind acts on the fire, you've got to keep in mind that the wind is at the surface, you've got winds 5-15. the winds aloft are 70 miles per

hour. that's what really drives a lot of the upper-level wind patterns. the cool air is sinking. that's what we're looking at here today. the larger it grows, the smoke is heavier than the surrounding air. it's really a matter of how these winds act on this system. this thing is really growing by the minute every single day. so we'll continue to monitor it. and, of course, again, that's how you get that name, fire storm from those typical fire storms that we see here throughout california. >> anthony, thank you. here are some photos that richmond police want the public to see. investigators say this man is a male thief and was caught on tape last week. this happened at a home on the east side of i-80 in richmond.

thousands of people gathered in washington, d.c. this weekend. a bay area woman was one of those who was in the nation's capital a half century ago to protest discrimination and inequality. tonight, she reflects. nbc bay area cheryl herd has the

story. >> it was a buzz about hearing dr. king. >> one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. >> the promise of change, the promise of a different and new america. >> reporter: gay cobb says she wanted to be a part of that new america. she was a young new yorker who set out to hear dr. martin luther king, jr. speak. >> this was the poster. that we received from the march. >> now a c.e.o. of the oakland private industry council, she is now looking back on that speech 50 years later. but to be part of that generation and to have observed the changes in america since then is just profoundly humbling.

which is wrapping up today in santa clara. okay, consider yourselves officially welcome. we're a celebration mainly through pop culture. this is our fist meeting where we've been running our show in paris for 14 years. >> the bay area was the first choice where promoters say the response has been so great, they're already looking at bringing back the show next year. the american dream comes in all shapes and sizes and maybe parietals as well. garvin thomas heads to wine country. there, he found remarkable success for people with very humble beginnings.

>> they are good at growing red and white and it turns out -- >> just about three years. >> they're good at growing dreams, too. dreams like the one raphael rios had come true. that's him with his dad in the back of a pick-up truck somewhere in the napa vineyard. raphael says for him and his siblings, the earliest memories they can conjure up are the families working among the greats. although not all the memories are pleasant ones. >> early spring mornings where there's been frost overniegtsd and the grass is still frozen and crunchy. you get out there and this is one of my significant memories. how much my toes would hurt after being out walking through that. >> it certainly is a long way from there to here.

but the fact that raphael went from farm worker to wine maker is not the most remashlgble part of this story. >> i come in from mexico in '68. >> it's that rinaldo robledo did it, too. as well as agnocio delgaldio. enough people have made this journey, 14 in all, they formed their own group. the napa sonoma mexican american vineyards association. >> 14 of these small american dream stories. >> he now helps his father run their business. he says this is not just a uniquely american tale. it's something also unique to the wine business. he says something about the mix that makes this business right for this type of success. >> most of the magic happened in the vineyards.

you know, making wienl is something that fills a form. >> and so once a year, the group gets together to celebrate the fruits of their success as well as raise money for scholarships. and while there may be kids working in the fields today who lack the munl to pursue their dreams, at least they no longer lack the role models. >> again, that was nbc bald area's garvin thomas reporting. right now, we're going to check on the weather with mr. anthony slaughter. >> well, temperatures today kind of similar to where they were yesterday. many places got back to the mid to upper '80s today. there were a few places that got back into the 70s, cooler than they were yesterday, like s&l that rosa. very comfortable in san francisco, 69. san jose, 82 degrees. now, we have a steady on-shore flow right now. and that's keeping temperatures a little bit cooler than they were this time yesterday. in fact, two degrees cooler in s&l that rosa.

just about a degree or two cool ert every place else. really, ant the same where we were yesterday. we have that on shore breeze that was keeping a lot of the coastline with the exception right now, the gold gate, it looks like visibility has cleared. we are expecting to see that fog roll back in tonight. and it will be with us through tomorrow morning. 64 in san francisco. down in san jose, 66 degrees. concord right now at 66. gep, the fog will be with us for tomorrow. so do expect a few delays. education speci especially if you're going to be traveling to or from. it doesn't look like any major drizzle where some of the roadways are actually wet. there you can see, tonight, right around 11:00, the fog will make its way into the east bay. right around 3:00 in the morning, really, everybody expected to be shrouded in with cloud cover. but the fog and the cloud cover

is really not going to stick around all day tomorrow. in fact, by noon, we notice to clear out from the inland valley all the way to the coastal locations. temperatures tomorrow will be very similar to where they were today and the mid to upper 80s. so, tonight, grab a jacket if you're going to be out late. tomorrow, temperatures are really going to be comfortable. 75 in santa cruz. a nice beach day. temperatures will be a little bit warm. we may have to get that a.c. on. that will be some of our warmest locations, even 87 in antoich. temperatures will be cooler. 68 in san francisco. a little bit warmer in wienl country mplt 82 for tomorrow. temperatures are going to climb

that phone call? across the bay area, thousands of high school athletes are back in action. and a big concern is the growing risk of concussions. but, now, young athletes have a special clinic to turn to for help. >> back to school means back to the fields for hundreds of high school football players. football is linked to the highest number of concussions. but as gary lee can tell you, basketball players are at risk. the 18-year-old suffered a concussion on the court. >> he clipped me on the temple. it wasn't like a big hit or anything. i kind of figured, you know, whatever. >> but days later, gary started to feel terrible headaches. >> as soon as i have did something that would stress me out or kind of, you know, cause activity around the congresswoman pewter, the band would tighten. >> when his symptoms still didn't go away, gary came here

to ucsf multiday pli their concussion clinic. once month, gary meets with special iszs today, dr. carolyn center is checking his balance. >> it's really important to recognize it and treat it immediately. concussions do not respond well if you try to sort of push through it. it will linger and the siymptom will continue. it's best if you're concerned that your child has a head injury. are they having a headache? do they have dizziness? are they having trouble speaking or do they feel irritable? it can be any force to the body. >> as gary completes this impact test to assess his memory, he

says he's had fewer headaches. a recovering athlete, he was glad to have so many specialists on his team. mary anne favreau, nbc bay area news. >> a new study is out about autism. and it may answer some questions or raise concerns especially since we were here in the bay area. >> good job. >> the pacific autism center for education works closely with kids who have autism. it also helps parents, many of whom ask if i have one autistic child, is it more likely than usual that i'll have another? a new study out of denmark says yes. pace executive director says that doesn't mean it's time to panic. he says it means it may p time to prepare. >> if you can get attention to the child early on, early intervention therapeutic services, there's a good chance that you can overt a more

next month, a notorious stretch of bay area coastline is scheduled to be transformed. no more cars or car accidents, but plenty of trails and scenery. we're talking about devil's slide. joe rosado, jr. shows us how this notorious road holds a picturesque future. >> it's some of the most seenic coastline you'll see anywhere. the trouble is, very few have ever been able to take it in. >> if you want to see the scenery, you have to be the passenger in the vehicle. >> for decades, these hills between pacifica and half-moon bay cradles high way 1. frequent rock slides and road closures. >> it used to be straight over here and this whole road dropped probably about 10 feet. but when caltransopened a

pair of traffic tunnels here, this stretch of road was retired. soon, it will begin. >> it will now, instead of being a vehicle traffic, it will be foot traffic and bicycle traffic. >> next month, caltrans will officially hand over the old roadway to the county. the county plans to spend $2 million turning it into a cliff side park with trails and bike paths. >> you look over the side there and you see spectacular views of the california coast, the ocean, the birds are down there flying. >> with the road closed, caltrans installed parking lots on both sides of the trail with room for about 40 cards. >> that's why it's called devil's slide. now we took something that's devilish and tamed it. >> the roadway was originally built in the early 1900s as the ocean shore railroad.

>> they had terrible problems and then rocks would fall on it and they would have to stop all of their commuter trains. >> the san mateo county says they will try to monitor for rock slides which could even danger trail users. only now if mother nature shuts down the road, it will likely stay closed. >> the county doesn't have the kind of money it would take to be able to restore the roadway. >> until then, this road is expected to draw 80,000 visitors a year. earn joying a place called devil's slide. >> and it is heavenly there on a beautiful day like today. anthony slaughter? what kind of weather do you have for us? >> temperatures tompl are going to be a little bit warmer. kind of the microfibers that we're used to. not a drastic change by any means, in fact. most of our inland valley will

be at the mid to upper 80s. a little bit of a cooling trend because of that persistent flow. we're not expecting to stay incredibly cloudy for tomorrow. we'll see plenty of sunshine for the coast. tempbtures right now very comfortable. 65 in livermoore. again, that persistent on-shore flow. even the low clouds will be with us at least through the early morning hours. right now, visibility not too bad. locks like your airport arrivals are going to be good to go. we are expecting fog and a little bit of drizzle. not going to be as thick as it was today, but enough for at least an hour delay here's what we're going to be looking at form.

temperatures will be the warmest here. right up against the coastline, not too bad. a little bit warmer in oakland at 73 degrees. temperatures do go up a little bit each and every day. thursday, friday and saturday, it looks like temperatures begin to fall. definitely move this way as we had towards saturday and sunday this week. we've been talking about how dry we've been all season long since winter, spring, summer and now we're going back into fall, diane, and it looks like we may actually get a little bit of rain. maybe a little bit more than just drizzle come next sunday. >> all right, thanks. we'll be right back.

tuesday marks an annual holiday. it's the release date of the new madden game from redwood cities electronic arts. nbc bay area has this first look. >> for 2 1/2 decades, football fans have been getting an early fix with each edition of madden nfl game. first the august edition for the current generation console, x-box 360. and then later in the fall, the x-boxz 1 rand ps-4 is released. his voice hasn't been part of the congressmen day for a few years now as jim nantz and phil sims return for a second straight year. >> of all of the features, one new mode gives you a chance to go beyond the field and channel mark davis returning your own
