mike is all over it. christina has a nice day ahead on monday, august 26. this is "today in the bay." it is 6:01. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. can united nations say snipers targeted a convoy of a chemicals weapons inspection team in syria. we have new video overnight showing the team leaving from their hotel in damascus. we're told they were all wearing body armor. they left in seven suvs and planned to visit a site in the suburbs of damascus where an alleged chemical weapons attack happened last week. the u.n. says the team was deliberately shot at. so far the snipers have not been identified. this morning syrian president bashar assad deny his troops used chemical weapons. the united states says there's little doubt that assad's regime is responsible for the attack.

happening right now, just an out-of-control wildfire gaining ground in yosemite creeping ever so close to buildings, prompting evacuations and threatening san francisco's power grid and water supply. this morning, a total of about 225 square miles already charred. that vufly, for reference here, roughly the size of the city of chicago. 5500 buildings right now threatened, 23 of them have already burned and 2800 firefighters are on the ground right now working very, very hard. >> we now know one of the areas destroyed by the fire is the tuolumne family camp run by the city of berkeley. that camp is located on highway 120 just seven miles from the entrance to yosemite. "today in the bay's" jodi hernandez joins us from the front lines of the fire this morning. jodi, it is certainly a stubborn wildfire. firefighters making any progress

this morning? >> reporter: well, you know, fire crews are just now waking up or the bulk of them are just now waking up and getting ready to get back on the fire line. bay area crews are out here, crews from sunnyvale, los altos and san francisco. in fact, all these engines you see lined up behind us are from the south bay. this fire again is burning out of control. it may be a long way from the bay area. but it is impacting our region in a very big way. the fire has burned about 144,000 acres so far. among the loss, as you mentioned, the berkeley tuolumne family camped, owned and operated by the city of berkeley since 1992. you're looking at pictures of that camp. it burned yesterday. firefighters tell me they just could not save it as hard as they tried.

also camp towongo headquartered in san francisco has lost one building. the staff sent one person to the camp to retrieve the torah. also a very big concern for the bay area is the hetch hetchy reservoir which complies water and power to the bay area. two hydroelectric plants we understand have been damaged. so far service has not been impacted. again, crews are here from all over the state and all over the bay area. i'll tell you that the folks who live in this area really appreciate it. they're on pins and needles as they wait and pray their homes will be spared. >> we're back here live. you're looking as these fire engines here again, engines from

the south bay. all the fire chiefs are currently at a briefing. briefing starts at 6:00 a.m. where they're all getting their assignments for the day. the san francisco fire chief, we caught him as he was leaving the find out where they're going to be staying for the next 24 hours. a lot of these crews have been protecting the structures around tuolumne city. that's where the fire is starting to move, edge closer to the sleepy town here. the san francisco crew has been spending a lot of time protecting the structures and homes in this area. they're out there getting their assignments and will be leaving here around 7:00 this morning. reporting live from tuolumne city, jodi hernandez, "today in the bay." >> the devastation grows out there. for more on the weather conditions firefighters are facing, let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. rough one. >> it really is. let me step out of the way and talk about what they are facing. for the next 24 hours, the winds have shifted from the

south-southeast, gusting more 10 to 20 miles per hour. the fire is up in the higher elevations. so firefighters right now are trying to protect anybody's property who could be damaged. however, the remote areas of this fire will likely continue to burn as we head throughout the next month, possibly next two months. we're trying to protect any property and human life they can at this point. they have new changes when it comes to the wind trucks. tomorrow we'll see thunderstorms in the area. let me give you perspective of the rim fire from space and the massive smoke plume that comes along with it. you see the area shaded in head here. this is the fire itself roughly the size of chicago. the south-southeast wind is taking all the smoke over lake tahoe. they say the tahoe basin is filled with thick smoke. it's drifted into reno where they had to cancel numerous outdoor activities. weather is certainly playing a role the next couple days.

all. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live at san jose police headquarters with details into the investigation. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we want to show you an edited version of the surveillance tape. perhaps you can help police here at headquarters in san jose find the suspected gunmen. again, as i mentioned, you'll only see the moments before and the moments after this man was shot. this is from a surveillance camera mounted at an apartment complex across from a parking lot at third and julian streets. you'll see the victim riding in on a bicycle, being chased by a man. he gets off the bicycle. the man approaches him, hits him, shoots him. the victim goes down between two cars. that man with the gun leaves. another man, this man on a bicycle, also with a gun, comes up and shoots the man who is now again laying between the two cars. moments later people arrive, they call police. they try to help the man. the officers arrive. but unfortunately the man could

not survive his wounds. he died becoming the 33rd person to be killed within the city of san jose this year. you compare that to last year. last year there were6ns a total 46 for the year. this year we're already at 33. reporting live at san jose police headquarters, bob redell, "today in the bay." also this morning, an oakland mother and her two daughters recovering after being wounded during a drive-by shooting. another teenager who police say was the intended target was also hit. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in oakland with more details on the investigation. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. i just got off the phone with oak planned police. they say still no arresting this morning. oakland police and crime stoppers are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading the the arrest of the person who opened fire on that 17-year-old, likely the intended target according to the trib, inadvertently hitting two young sisters just 8 and 12 years old and the mom, a 44-year-old

woman. all the victims expected to recover. this happened yesterday afternoon in broad daylight in east oakland on 104th avenue. a um in ber of homes also hit with bullets. no one else hurt. children in oakland have been the victims of gunfire many times this year, already since january, eight people under the age of 18 have been killed within city limits. certainly soeshing statistics. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> those children are expected to recover if their gunshot wounds. tragically a total of five children ages eight years old and younger, they have been shot and killed in oakland since back in 2011. earlier this month, 16-month-old drew jackson was shot and killed when somebody fired shots into the bedroom where he was sleeping. in july 8-year-old alaysha carradine was shot and killed when she answered the door.

california are on hand trying to get it under control. four people including two children now recovering from gunshot wounds in oakland this morning. a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. a mother and her 8 1257bd-year-old children were innocent bystanders caught in the middle of the gunfire. all expected to be okay. a u.n. investigator team forced to return back after snipers shot at their vehicle. the team is in damascus investigating whether chemical weapons were used last week in an attack that killed 300 civilians. the team plants to continue its investigation as soon as its vehicle is replaced. a south san francisco drugmaker has been bought to the tune of $10 billion. >> that's billion with a b. scott mcgrew, another in a string of big-time takeovers in the pharmaceutical industry. >> good morning. amgen to buy onyx. it's over cancer drugs.

onyx makes a particular type of drug for bone marrow cancer, very promising. onyx out of south san francisco. amgen doesn't have much in this category. brand new into the newsroom this morning, i mean just seconds old, two exchanges you don't hear much about. bats global and direct edge will merge to form what will be the second largest exchange in united states, bigger than the nasdaq, slightly smaller than the nyse. today they'll account for about 20% of stock sales. donald trump has been slapped with a lawsuit from the attorney general of new york. trump accused of detroiting people who enrolled in his trump university courses. trump actually barred from calling it a university. the attorney general says students paid $35,000 for a three-day business course and didn't get to meet trump.

that means beautiful ocean air. the natural ac will stay on through the next couple days. if we stock the clock on futurecast, mostly sunny conditions at about 3:00 p.m. san francisco, you'll get three to four solid hours of sunshine. as a result, 65 degrees on the way to san francisco, 86 in livermore, 85 for gilroy. 77 in san jose. here it is, back to school, back to work, new forecast. up to 90 degrees tomorrow. 88 for wednesday and then we'll slowly start to cool off getting into the upcoming weekend. you've got to work for it first. the man to get you there on time, mike inouye. >> that's right. get to work, after you watch our newscast. looking toward the bay bridge. no big surprises. nice smooth flow down the eastshore freeway westbound. this is ashley avenue. seeing a bump in volume. typical pattern over here toward the maze and heading south. a little build for 880 as well.

south 680 out of concord and pleasant hill, speeds down in the 50s south of the interchange. with very a disabled vehicle right around south main as you're heading through walnut creek, the disabled vehicle now getting pushed to the shoulders. a little activity, not a lot of slowing and that's great news. i'll track that and let you know if there are any other problems as you head toward san ramon. west 580 moves nicely. we see the build typical over livermore. west 84 shows your build through vallecitos and towards sunol with no problems, no big surprises. west 580, we continue the commute toward the castro valley where we see slowing around redwood road. then down into the 20s at the interchange itself, 238 and 5806789 slowing is the build toward the san mateo bridge as well. live look outside to see how things are shaping up. from 880 through fremont frkt no

ringing in the day. investors may be intimidated. it's monday, august 26. this is "today in the bay." >> good morning everybody. 6:30. thanks for hanging out. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. a stubborn wildfire still out of control and growing this month in yosemite. 225 square miles now charred tuolumne county just about the size of the city of chicago. 5500 buildings are threatened and 23 have already burned to the ground. nbc's jay gray joins us live from the front lines of the fire fight. jay, there are nearly 3,000 firefighters on the ground this morning. what are they up against today? >> reporter: well, laura, unfortunately much of the same. not getting a break from the

conditions here. strong winds expected to push this fire over the next couple of days, gusting as they have at times over 40 miles an hour. the rugged terrain in these mountains making it's cally difficult for the teams that are on the ground. they continue to work around the clock, but this fire is growing as you talk about containment below 10% at this point. not the focus. right now the focus continues to be protection, trying to protect small towns like this one and others that could be in the path of the flames. that's what these crews are doing, the best job they can of right now. they've already lost 11 homes, 23 structures. that's a number they want to see theúsame, laura and jon, even if the other numbers climb, they want to make sure they don't lose anymore homes here. so far they've been able to accomplish that part of this very difficult mission. thank you very much. they do have a fight against them. 7% contained. that's it. >> a lot of firefighters from the bay area trying to help out.

christina loren, let's talk about the conditions. it's not goating any easier for these guys. >> no. over the next couple days, a big question mark when it comes to the thunderstorms. not yet today. as we head through tomorrow and wednesday, we'll see the monsoonal moisture and thunderstorms pop up in the area. that could be a blessing or a curse. with the thunderstorms, you can get brief heavy downpours that could help the firefighting efforts. you also get really gusty winds to the tune of about 50, 60 miles per hour. that's why we're really concerned about the firefighting efforts. the winds over the weekend have shifted. they were coming out of the southwest, that was a moist ocean air, now seeing the winds out of the south-southeast. for us that means very dry air in the area. you can see from the smoke plume courtesy of nasa, how large it is. you see the area shaded in red. that's the size, the perimeter itself of the rim fire, roughly the size of chicago. that smoke is drifting 250, 300 miles plus away.

there's air quality alerts issued for tahoe and reno. they had to cancel several events in the area. this is something we'll be talking about at least for the next week. the word is once they get those structures contained, the area contained around the structures and those structures protected, the fire itself could continue to burn in the remote areas for up to a month, maybe even two months. that's massive fire and a massive undertaking. 59 degrees here in nevada. we're starting out nice and comfortable. we're the one area in the whole state of california where things are nice and calm for now. that looks to be the case as we head through the next couple days. we'll see cool ocean air move onshore, although i need to point out, if you're going to go camping, having a barbecue, make sure everything is completely out before you leave that fire. 64 degrees in sunnyvale, 64 in san jose. here is where we're headed later today. 86 inland, bay side 77 degrees. 65 degrees at the coast. we'll talk a little more about

warmer weather headed our way. then we have a cooler weekend as we finish off the month of august and kickoff september. but it's that time, kids heading back to school, certainly noticeable on the roads. let's check on that with mike. >> summer vacations ending. a lot of us heading back to work. a lot of folks heading to the bay bridge toll plaza itself. the metering lights on just before 6:00. low clouds hover, not a problem for visibility. we'll get a look at the span. the low clouds also, you can see through them and the silhouettes of the buildings in san francisco. be prepared, visibility may shift over the next couple hours as you're traveling over the bridges, watching a smooth drive across the area. we'll look6já over here toward san mateo bridge, we're talking about the low clouds hovering, speeds close to what they typically are about this time, 6:34. we're looking at a good volume of traffic westbound off the high-rise and toward foster city, you can't make out that

flat section right there. we're looking at the maps and we see the south bay starting to build. no problems across the san mateo and dumbarton bridges. a little slowing because of the low clouds in the area. peninsula into the south bay, a smooth drive through palo alto and into mountain view. a little slowing around 680. now highway 87 slows from capital expressway up into downtown. back to you. 6:35. police in union city still searching for a gunman who shot and killed two men. it happened early yesterday morning on 11th near d. street. police say one of the men was pronounced dead at the scene. the other died at the hospital. police in san leandro asking for help trying to find an elderly man missing for nearly 24 hours. we have a photo of 81-year-old man who is described as being 5'4", about 150 pounds. he was last seen sunday morning at about 7:00. police say he is an avid walker and has been known to walk all

the way from san leandro to the san mateo bridge. that's a distance of more than seven miles. anybody with information is asked to please call police. a puppy stolen from a locked car in mountain view on saturday is back home with his family this morning. mountain view police released these photos of uso, a 9-week-old chihuahua-dachshund-pit bull mix. police say his return was triggered by reports in bay area media. they have not said who returned them or how. >> happy. 6:36 right now. still ahead, we'll tell you about an overnight stabbing in san francisco. we have new details in the search for the suspects. that's coming up next. the united nations chemical weapons crew under attack in syria. the sniper fire that sent the team scrambling for safety at the site of last week's alleged attacks. unbelievable.

at 6:44, new this morning, san francisco police investigating an early morning stabbing in the city's mission terrace neighborhood. it all happened just before 1:30 this morning. police were called to the 4700 block of mission street. that's near the intersection of ocean avenue east of interstate 280. when officers arrived, they found one person with at least one stab wound. right now the victim remains hospitalized in serious condition. so far no arrests made. also new in downtown san jose, an overnight standoff is over and the streets there are back open. a man holding a knife to his own neck talking to police for hours overnight forcing the closure of 10 city streets in the area of santa clara street between 11th and 13th. that standoff happened to be

word from chp, it's cleared from lane five right there, that has cleared the toll plaza itself. that caused a bit of a backup. we are slow off the berkeley curve heading toward the approach. a look back outside to see how the travel speeds are approaching the area. very slow through berkeley and emeryville, off the richmond area where things jam up as well. west 80 showing traffic today. that's because i think a lot of folks are over at berkeley as well. students and faculty getting back in the area. a lot more cars driving through the area. north 880 slows a bit through oakland. nothing dramatic. it's the southbound side where you see the slowing. speeds into the 50s where you see the orange. past the san mateo bridge and toward union city. castro valley y has shown the build for quite some time. here across the san mateo bridge we'll give you a look as well. a live look, low clouds hovering around the area. once you get into the high-rise, it's fog. a note reminding you, of course,

this wednesday at 8:00 p.m., closing the bay bridge -- i'm not. but it's closing. a note also for the peninsula side as we end with this look, a couple crashes, 101 at 92, right at the interchange. watch for the activity. sound like it's moving to the shoulder. this morning an oakland neighborhood is on edge following a drive-by shooting which left a mother and her two daughters wounded. today in the bay's christie smith joins us live in oakland with an update on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i spoke with oakland police and they say still no arrest in a shooting that may have targeted a 17-year-old boy on the block. a mom and her two daughters just 12 and 8 years old were inadvertently shot by the gunfire that broke out, although expected to survive, hit in the leg or the hand. this happened in broad daylight on 104th avenue in east oakland sunday afternoon. the bullets pierced a number of other homes. fortunately no one else was hurt

in all this. oakland police and the nay your have been under intense pressure trying to deal with a series of shootings including those involving children. since january eight people under the age of 18 years old have been killed in oakland. oakland police and crime stoppers are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading the the arrest of the shooter. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> those children are expected to recover from their gunshot injuries, but sadly five children ages 8 years old and younger have been shot and killed in oakland since 2011. earlier this month 16-month-old drew jackson was shot and killed when someone fired shots into the bedroom where he was sleeping. in july, 8-year-old alaysha carradine was shot and killed by a gunman when she answered the door during a sleepover. in 2011 three children shot and

killed, 5-year-old gabriel martinez, 23-month-old hiram lawrence and 3-year-old carlos nava. arrests have only been made in two of those five homicide investigations. >> all right. 6:52 right now. a former child psychiatrist from san mateo who pleaded no contest to molesting boys during exams in the 1990s is set to be sentenced this morning. women ayers charged with nine counts of lewd acts on children under the age of 14 for alleg allegedly touching five boys inappropriately during the counseling sessions. he pleaded no contest in may. some of his alleged victims are expected to be testifying today. united airlines employee and his wife accused of stealing luggage from passengers following the crash of asiana flight 214. investigators say shawn crud dup and thomas stole luggage from flights diverted after the deadly crash in july.

prosecutors say thomas took clothing from the bags to a nordstrom store and got $5,000 for the items. more stolen items were allegedly found inside the couple's home. happening right now, the out-of-control wildfire gaining serious ground in yosemite, creeping closer to buildings prompting evacuations and also threatening san francisco's power grid and its water supply. this morning about 225 square miles are charred. that vufly to give you perspective, roughly the size of the city of chicago. 5500 buildings are threatened, 23 have already been burned and 2800 firefighters are there working hard on the ground. we now know one of the areas destroyed by the fire is the tuolumne family camp run by the city of berkeley. that camp is located on highway 120 seven miles from the entrance to yosemite. "today in the bay's" jodi hernandez joins us from the front lines of the fire this morning. jodi, it is such a stubborn

wildfire, firefighters making any progress this morning? >> reporter: well, they're trying to. fire crews are just now getting their assignments and getting ready to head out to the fire line again for another tough day. crews are here from all over the bay area. the engines you see behind me from the south bay, sunnyvale, palo alto and san jose. they are among the 3,400 firefighters out here battling this massive blaze. though it's far from the bay area, our region is definitely impacted. the berkeley tuolumne camp was destroyed by fire yesterday, owned and operated by the city of berkeley and been in operation since 1992. firefighters tell me they just couldn't save it. also camp towonga headquartered in san francisco has lost a structure so far. the staff sent somebody up here

on saturday to retrieve the camp's torah. you're looking at a photograph of that which is now safe in san francisco. and then there is hetch hetchy reservoir which supplies power and water to san francisco. we understand two hydroelectric plants have been damaged so far. so far service has not been impacted. of course, it is very, very tough for the folks who live up here in the region. 4,500 homes are still threatened. we talked to a local businessman and homeowner just a short time ago about what it's been like. >> i could see it from my house. it's just hard being able to get your stuff together and knowing what to pack, whatnot to pack, what's valuable, what's not. that whole thing, just anticipating what's going to happen. >> reporter: i'm not sure if you guys can hear me or not, but we cannot hear you. we're back here live if you are with us, again, 3,500
