our first look at the bullet holes left behind after a sniper attack on a united nations team in syria. tempers escalating there. gaining ground on a fast-moving wildfire. we're live with the firefighters as they try to push back against the flames in yosemite. meanwhile, weather could actually help or hamper the firefighting efforts over the rim fire. we'll take a close look at what they're up against today and here locally, beautiful beach weather. ha is the word in the weather department. i'll sort it all out for you in your full forecast. big slowdown on tuesday, a crash on the bay bridge. we'll give you the details coming up. right now we take you to the south bay for a spanning look. that is a nice way to ring in a tuesday, a look over san jose with the sun creeping over the horizon on a tuesday, august 27.

this is "today in the bay." good morning to you and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. great to have you with us. a bay area teenager is dead, sadly this morning, killed in a car crash. this happening the day before starting the brand new school year. that crash happening just before 9:00 last night on el capitan road. that is right next to the crow canyon country club. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live by the crash scene in danville with the latest on the on going investigation. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you jon. i spoke with one neighbor briefly this morning. he says he heard the crash. it was very loud and he knew right away that something was wrong. this is where the driver lost control, slammed into the tree there and then went right through the fence. three teenagers inside of the car. a 16-year-old boy has died. as you said, today, the first

day of school in the area. that 16-year-old boy we're told was the passenger in the right front of the car. here is what we know. it was around 8:50 last night. the car was headed north on el capitan when the car suddenly spun out and hit a tree on the right passenger side. the 16-year-old was taken to san ramon regional medical center where he was pronounced dead. the 17-year-old driver suffered broken ribs. the other 16-year-old passenger suffered a broken leg. >> too early today. no obvious signs of anything. that's what our investigators will be working on to make sure they can pinpoint speeds and other things. there's nothing obvious such as cans of whole or anything like that. late this morning police say they're looking at speed as a possible factor. they say they don't know where these teens were going, but the families have been notified, though they're not releasing the name of the teen who died.

tweets going out this morning, quite a few expressing shock and sadness. they say the teens went to san ramon valley high school. we do have calls into the district about that: reporting live in danville, christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:03. new this morning, fire crews in oakland mopping up after an early morning house fire that investigators are describing as suspicious. it broke out at a building on 50th avenue at the intersection of east 12th near international boulevard. the fire started in the two-story home around 3:00 this morning. investigators believe squatters were living in that vacant building, but no one was inside when crews arrived at the scene. the cause is under investigation. happening right now, firefighters hoping to gain more ground on the rim fire this morning. it's been very difficult out there. now the largest wildfire in the entire country. crews were able to make significant progress yesterday.

we can tell you the fire, the fire is now 20% contained. but this one far from finished. right now the fire has scorched nearly 161,000 acres and still growing. "today in the bay's" jodi hernandez is live tuolumne city with the latest on what crews are dealing with to battle back the flames. good morning, jodi. >> reporter: good morning, jon. things are finally starting to look better out here. ten days into this fire, and as you mentioned, it is now 20% contained. the efforts of firefighters are finally starting to pay off. the aerial attacks continued last night until it got dark outside and you can bet they will pick up again later this morning. the fire grew about 10,000 acres from yesterday to about 161,000 acres. that's a much smaller jump than we've seen in days past. it's certainly an indication that things are starting to improve. fire crews still have a very

lornlg way to go to get control of this massive, massive blaze. meanwhile the impact of the fire is hitting the bay area hard. dozens of families from berkeley gathered last night to mourn the loss of the berkeley powe ol me camp. that camp has been in operation since 1922, and it was destroyed by fire over the weekend. >> what was so special about this place? >> the food, the friends, the tent cabins, the swimming. everything was so fun. >> it's all about family. there are so few places on earth that are all about family. >> we're back here live where you can see crews are just getting ready to start another long hard day. the crews that are leaving and some that are coming back. we saw a san francisco fire rig pass by. that rig has been out for the

last 24 hours. they're finishing a 24-hour shift. they've been out there protecting the homes tuolumne city. a long way to go. a firefighters told me that the crews have been asked for a 14 to 21-day commitment out here. certainly many, many days to go. 20% contained and again a long way to go to beat this fire. reporting live tuolumne city, jodi hernandez, "today in the bay." >> got to be pretty smokey out there as well. want to check the -- we'll have continuing coverage of the wildfire all morning long including a look at how the rim fire is closing in on the hetch hetchy reservoir. we'll tell you which local reservoirs are getting emergency supplies of water as a precaution. it's all at 6:30 in a live report from bob redell. make sure to stay with us for continuing coverage of the rim fire both on air and online. our website, nbcbayarea.com, is updated around the clock.

we're there for you. right now you'll find a link to an interactive map that shows the perimeter of the fire, an interesting inside look. just search rim fire. >> want to check the current conditions right now. talking about all the smoke as well. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. the wind direction has shifted, laura and jon. i want to step out of the way and talk about the improvements. these changes that we're talking about, the 20% containment, our last update was about nine hours but hopefully they will have gained more containment. we'll bring that to you as soon as we find out on nbc bay area. what i can tell you is what i'm really focusing on, the potential for showers in the area and thunderstorms as we head throughout the day today. i stop the clock on your futurecast at 4:00 p.m. this is definitely going to help the humidity levels in the area and not just today, talking about another round of rain as we head through your wednesday.

definitely this could become helpful or hamper the firefighting efforts. we could see dry lightning strikes in the area as well. that could ignite new fires. what i can tell you right now, it looks like the moisture. we saw the same exact case with the mountain fire in southern (& california. keeping our fingers crossed. 58 livermore. in the bay area one of the only parts of the entire state of california without active fires. we've been very lucky so far. make sure to keep the campfire complete li out before you leave it. temperatures will be warmer. our temps will come up by about 5:00 to 8:00 degrees in some cases from yesterday's highs. return of the 90s. 91 inland. 82 degrees, 70 degrees at the coast. if you can get out to the beach, just as spectacular day to do so with temperatures really warm. it is the warmest day of the week. we'll start to drop off for the next couple days. i have your holiday weekend forecast. that's coming up in my next

report. first let's check the drive to get the money for the weekend. >> or spend the money to cross the bay bridge, as the case may be. looking here, the upper deck, taillights moving towards treasure island were slower, now moving smoother. the chp cleared the crash. at the bottom of the screen, that's the new span. both directions on the same level. there will be a change next week. keep that in mind. closure starting at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. right now looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, the notice of the earlier crash could have caused them to slow down the metering lights a tad bit. it does look like the traffic is flowing. the fastest moving lanes are the fast track lanes and of course hov. that goes without saying. get a couple more folks, you can get across the bridge a lot easier. a look to the san mateo bridge, if you're avoiding the bay bridge now or the weekend, which you have to, you can use west 92 or eastbound. the commute direction, taillights move smoothly over the taillights.

101, 92, 280 moving smoothly. we'll look to the south bay where this is an issue. northbound starts to build in volume. especially tuesday we see the heaviest volume of traffic. we have seen a little bit of a break. traffic getting lighter for a couple minutes and kicking in over the next 15. north 101 still very slow, 680 toward 880. 6:10 right now on the international scene, syria's foreign minister says a second trip by u.n. experts to the site of an alleged chemical weapons attack has been delayed. bullet holes on the size of the u.n. team's convoy which came under sniper fire yesterday. good news to report, nobody was hurt in that shooting. the syrian government and opposition forces are blaming one another for last week's attack. in the meantime the british government now says its military is drawing up contingency plans for a possible attack on syria. president obama has not yet decided how to respond to claims of poisonous gas attacks in the

here is a look at today's top stories. a teenager is dead. two others in the hospital this morning after a car crash in danville. police say the teens were driving near the crow canyon country club when the driver lost control and hit a tree. police say the three attend a local high school and were supposed to return for their first day of class this morning. today marks the first day of school. kids from sandy hook will return

to school today after the deadly shooting last year that killed 20 children. the shooting where that happened is slated for demolition. firefighters are making progress on the rim fire burning near yosemite. right now it's 20% contained. crews say the fire is still spreading, burning more than 160,000 acres so far. >> 6:15. washington insiders say the bay area's next economist -- >> nothing official but a report that yellin will be passed over in favor of larry summers. summers former head of harvard, former secretary of treasury during the clinton administration, extremely wealthy. he also has ties to the bay area, serves on the board of directors at the high-tech startup lending club. he's a good friend of facebook's cheryl sandburg. sandburg served as his chief of

a little coastal fog. especially in marin county across the golden gate bridge. as we head through the next couple hours, we'll see more of the cloud cover, then three to five degrees warmer later this afternoon. today is the warmest of the week. temps start to level off midweek and we have a cooler holiday weekend headed your way. i'll talk about the best beach cities. 70 degrees in san francisco, 75 in santa cruz. comfortable conditions if you can get out there. 83 in santa teresa and 88 in gilroy. tomorrow, as we head into thursday as well. temperatures will stay nice and warm. that means 70 degrees for your wednesday at the beach. 68 by thursday. then friday into the upcoming weekend, look at the difference between friday and sunday. almost a 10 to 15-degree drop off. labor day looking good. you've got to labor for the money to enjoy the weekend. what are they looking for. >> all the folks laboring to make the changes at the bay bridge. right now all these folks in the south bay. we saw a little break over the

last few minutes. just after 6:00, we see traffic from the first burst. getting towards 6:30, the build once again north 101 and 87 coming into downtown san jose. 87 has been an issue ever since the schools started coming back online. very slow drive. watch the northbound commute, a little slowing, especially after 7:30. that's when the entire northbound routes on a tuesday. watch back and come back and visit us. west 580 not so bad, a typical drive through livermore. 84 as well jamming up right around vallecitos for a little slowing there. 680 a nice flow of traffic through sunol and down toward fremont. here at the castro valley y and 880 we have a traditional

slowdown and the build of traffic brings you down to the upper 50s toward the san mateo bridge. get well familiar with these. 92, the san mateo bridge, 84 the dumbarton bridge, those are two of your alternates to the bay bridge as the construction and the changes happen starting tomorrow night and continuing on through labor day weekend. we will get you those updates and send them on twitter as well. right now this morning, a standard flow of traffic. in the peninsula, an easy drive northbound with the taillights past willow and all the way toward san mateo. 101 and 92 showing a volume increase. southbound 101 in the south bay, an easy flow through palo alto. on the golden gate bridge, the fog kicking in at the span itself. no major slowing through san rafael and marin until you get the fog south of the waldo tunnel. coming off 580 and around the berkeley curve, you see the roadways jamming up as you head toward the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on.

the earlier crash has cleared from the upper deck. thank you very much, mike. 6:20 right now. shakespeare santa cruz ending its 32-year run because of budget problems. it's the professional repertoire company at uc santa cruz. the currency son will end this year after the annual holiday show in december. university says the company is too dependent on campus funding and it can't keep supporting the company financially. the university could create a blue ribbon committee to seek out other theater companies that are more financially stable. >> this above all to th ine own self be true. a little hamlet. >> does a former football player charged with murder still deserve an $82,000 bonus. we'll tell you you why the nfl players association says yes, he does. that's coming up next.

the search for a missing arizona teenager has come to a tragic end. 18-year-old jonathan kroons body was found in rural oregon yesterday. his father says his son developed an obsession with "into the wild." the main character eventually dies. authorities say they're investigating his death as a suicide. a second teenager scheduled to be in court today in the beating death of a world war ii

veteran. this is video the first suspect, 16-year-old demetrius glenn arraigned via webcam yesterday. prosecutors accusing the teens of beating 88-year-old delbert bell ton if his car last week. his wallet was also stolen. the teens will be tried as adults. we're learning new details this morning about bradley manning's desire to live out the rest of his life as a woman known as chelsea. manning's attorney says the army private wants estrogen treatments which she would be willing to pay for during incarceration. he was c he. here is something to have people scratching their heads. the nfl players association trying to force the new england patriots to pay aaron hernandez $82,000 in bonuses. hernandez was cut from the team the day he was arrested for first degree murder in the death of an acquaintance.

the players association says hernandez's $40 million contract entitles him to bonus money for attending off-season workouts with the team. the money had not been paid when hernandez was arrested. the union says it is filing the grievance to make sure the league cannot withhold money from other players in the future. 6:26. george zimmerman will ask the state of florida to cover some of his legal fees. his lawyer, mark o'mara says the legal fees will be in the $200,000 to $300,000 range. that money would cover legal expenses and would not cover attorney fees. zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of trayvon martin more than a month ago. 6:26 right now. still ahead, a wildfire now creeping closer to the source of bay area drinking water. we'll tell you how crews are moving emergency water supplies from hetch hetchy to the peninsula as the fight continues

contained at last check, a big improvement from yesterday. it's burned almost 161,000 acres, larger than both san jose and oakland combined. that gives a very clear perspective. 4500 structures still threatened forcing the evacuation of a number of sites including tuolumne city. so far 23 structures have been destroyed including ones at the family camp located about seven miles outside yosemite national park. as firefighters are battling the massive rim fire in yosemite, there's another battle this morning going on. that is aimed at protecting our drinking water. this morning the hetch hetchy reservoir threatened by approaching flames. tod"today in the bay's" bob red is live at crystal springs reservoir which is getting emergency supplies of water right now. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. in order to ensure that the city

of san francisco has a clean supply of drinking water, the public utilities commission is diverting water from the hetch hetchy to two of its other reservoirs in the bay area, one being the crystal springs reservoir behind me here in san mateo county, the other being cal var ras in alameda county. this is all a precaution to protect the hetch hetchy. while ash has fallen into the reservoir it has yet to impact the city's water quality. the puc measured how much particulate matter is in the water. right now it is at a level of .02 which is well low low 5.0. for the ash to become a problem, it would have to sink 300 feet. that's the depth at which the city draws its supply from the hetch hetchy. let's say ash were to affect the water quality, the puc says the city could go for several months

hour, hour and a half. it looks like the weather could actually help the firefighting efforts in the area. let me take it right to your futurecast and show you what i'm talking about. as we head through the afternoon and evening hours, you can seamon soonal moisture moving right over the area. we're also talking the potential for thunderstorms. with the thunderstorms you could get brief heavy downpours, gusty winds and new lightning strikes. a big question mark when it comes to today's weather. what i can tell you based on my expertise, i think the showers are actually going to help. i stop the clock again as we head through wednesday. another more substantial bout of rain in the area right at noon tomorrow. this could actually be very good for the firefighting efforts. like i said before, when we get the update over the course of the next hour and a half, we'll let you know if they have gained further containment. 58 in livermore to kickoff the day, 61 in oakland. 54 in sunnyvale. warmest day of the week, inland

91, 82 bay side and at the coast, 72 degrees today. let's check the drive with mike inouye. i have the emeryville camera turned. you see the curve itself with the cameras stacked up, all the way around the bend, toward the bay bridge toll plaza. also coming across from the left to the right, you see folks coming off 580 and the maze, also jamming up before you get onto that approach to the v÷ ba bridge. it's traffic tuesday another live look outside and see how things are shaping up across the san mateo bridge. that's a little lighter, but on the east bay side, hayward and the approach. a slow drive from 238 on 880 down to 92. that's where you'll find a lot of congestion as well as the castro valley y. in problems on the peninsula. we'll move toward the south bay. northbound 101, showing the build again, just about 6:30 kicking in north of 680. highway 87, speeds coming into the 50s and building as the volume builds heading up from capital expressway all the way to downtown san jose.

highway 85 shows a bit of volume increase and speeds start to dip a bit. over here we have the flow through the tri-valley. although it's smooth, you see pleasanton heading toward the bottom of your screen, 680 south starts to see the speeds drop as more folks hit that road as well. back to you. time is 6:36. nothing short of a difficult day ahead for a lot of students in newtown, connecticut. >> today is the first day of school in that districts that includes sandy hook elementary. we have a look at how sandy hook students will be welcomed back. >> reporter: schoolchildren across knewtown, connecticut, begin the first day of school for those who attend sandy hook elementary school, it means being in a different town, monroe, connecticut. we've already started to see some school buses this morning. they are in a school building that they know very well. one they began attending in january. hundreds of sandy hook elementary school kids go back to school today, in a school

renovated just for them. it was renamed sandy hook elementary. the old school building where the shootings took place has been closed since that day in december. police officers are stationed there at all hours. newtown leaders, in fact, are expected to approve a plan in october that would have the current building torn down and a new one built in its place. we've also learned an iron gate will go up blocking the main entrance. the gate will replace concrete barriers that are there now. the school and driveway have been closed since december 14 when a 20-year-old gunman killed 20 first graders and six educators at the school. once again, we've started seeing school buses here. it's been raining off and on all morning long on this first day for the sandy hook elementary schoolchildren. that's the latest from monroe, connecticut, i'm katherine craig, back to you. 6:37. still ahead, new details of the crisis in syria unfolding this morning. we'll tell you how claims of

ale welcome back everyone. 6:44. it's going to be an emotional day for students and faculty in the east bay. three teenagers were involved in a terrible car wreck, two of them surviving. that crash happened just before

9:00 last night on el capitan road next to the crow canyon country club. today in the bay's christie smith is live at the scene of the crash in danville with more on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. certainly a tragedy for the families, a tragedy for the schools. today is the first day of school in the area. last night a 16-year-old boy was killed and two other teens were hurt when the car they were in slammed into a tree and crashed right through the fence. now, the car hit the tree on the right side and that's where the passenger was sitting who was killed. it was around 8:50 last night when 911 calls starting coming in near the el capitan drive area. the 16-year-old was taken to san ram mole regional medical center where he died. the driver, a 17-year-old suffered broken ribs. the other 16-year-old passenger suffered a broken leg. >> too early to tell. there's no obvious signs of anything. that's what our investigators will be working on to make sure

58 in livermore, 55 in sunnyvale. kids heading back to school in lafayette today. 85 degrees, make sure they have the sunscreen ready to go. a nice warm day out there. as you know, our summer days are numbered. we kickoff fall on the 21st day of september. 91 in livermore, 71 in fremont. if you want to hit the beach, 75 degrees in santa cruz. highs coming in this time of year at about 3:30, 4:00. 70 in san francisco and 83 in redwood city. next three days like this, dropping your temps wednesday into thursday, not by much. it's still going to be warm out there. friday we'll hit the 90s again. the weekend is when we get that cooler weather. 85 inland on saturday. down to 79 on sunday, then heating you right back up to a comfortable 82 degrees on labor day. let's take a look at your drive, a traffic tuesday.

>> it doesn't look too bad here this live shot at 101 and 680. folks aren't necessarily clustered right now. right here we see the backup as folks do slow past the merge off 680, 280, 101. this is where the worse congestion is about this time north of 680 toward 880. look at this. coming up here on 87. a lot of slowing speeds down into the 50s and also at capital expressway. there is the volume building there, 280 at the 880 interchange. all of these have speeds down to around 50 miles per hour and getting slower with the build kicking in for all the northbound. that's what's going on, though no major crashes right now. that's the good news. there is a flow of traffic. right here south 680 towards unknoll in fremont. we see speeds dipping here as well. the tri-valley not so bad pushing through castro valley. we have a good volume of

traffic. there's the big slowing starting in earnest around redwood with the speeds down around redwood. here is the typical build as you head south for 880 down through continuing to fremont. also heading over the san mateo bridge, 92, the san mateo bridge moving smoothly in your westbound commute. san mateo bridge is 92. the dumbarton bridge is 84. that's a review for folks who don't typically use them. those are two roadways that are alternates to cross the bay as the bay bridge closes starting tomorrow night and continuing through labor day weekend. a live look outsi and see how things are shaping up as well. we're going to send one more map and go toward palo alto, north 101 at the peninsula. i took the live look. i'll show you that coming up. back to you. happening right now, firefighters facing another gruelling day battling that rim fire in yosemite. the fire has already claimed a long list of homes as well as berkeley's be loved tuolumne camp. crews there, we have good news, the silver lining, they were

able to gain some ground yesterday pushing containment now to about 20%. this morning the fire still raging and spreading, covering an areanb larger than san josed san francisco combined. "today in the bay's" jodi hernandez is live tuolumne city. you've been talking to neighbors. what's the feeling as those flames continue to rage? >> reporter: well, they're still very nervous. as you mentioned, things are starting to look a little better. though it is early here in tuolumne city, this base camp here has been bustling. you can see crews behind me. they're waiting for their  crews are coming in after finishing a 24-hour shift. in fact, we caught up a short time ago with the san francisco fire strike team that spent the past day out protecting homes tuolumne city. ten days into this fire fight crews are starting to gain ground on this very tough fire.

the rim fire is now 20% contained, 160,000 acres have burned. that's up 10,000 acres from yesterday, a much smaller jumpy than we've seen in days past. we actually had some days where we saw the fire double overnight. so things are definitely improving. but there is still a long way to go. 4500 houses remained threatened. residents say the firefighting force out here is putting them a bit at ease. >> i have incredible faith in the firefighters and what they do, the resources they're applying to fighting this fire. if you look around town, the men that are here, you can see all the air tactical plaens and helicopters flying around and dumping the retardant. it's amazing. >> reporter: we're back here live. you're looking at a thank you sign that somebody put out at

all you have to do is search rim fire. >> 6:53. a new federal report out this morning offering new details into the nevada state mental hospital accused of shipping patients to other states. the report finds about 40% of the patients discharged from the las vegas hospital were sent to other states without plans for shelter or followup care. many of the patients had been living in las vegas shelters or on the streets before they were sent to other cities. the government investigation into rawson--neal hospital started after "the sacramento bee" reported#od they bused 150 patients to other states, many to california. the district attorney threatened to sue them for the cost of taking care of those patients. this morning pg&e says if the utility is fined for that san bruno pipeline explosion, it may past the cost on to customers. the utility says it may seek a rate hike as much as 4% if its

borrowing costs increase. pg&e says the costs would go up if state regulators impose $4 billion in fines for the deadly 2010 blast. the public utilities commission is set to rule on a penalty for pg&e by the end of this year. sigh foam takeout boxes could be a thing of the past in san jose. city council will consider a ban on those containers today. if it passes, san jose would be the largest city in the state, perhaps the country, to enact such a ban. opponents argue other options are more expensive. if the ban passes, large restaurant chains would have to make that switch by january 1st. smaller restaurants would have an extra year to make that transition. menlo park city council taking um the issue of red light cameras once again today. the council was supposed to vote on a plan to add a fifth camera to the intersection of bayfront expressway last week, but put

off the decision after hours of public debate. the issue on today's city council agenda, the council will be also considering signing a five-year contract with a camera provider to keep a red light camera running. 6:56. stocks are sharply lower this morning. >> big time. scott mcgrew, lots for investors to worry about. yes, there is. good morning to you. we're hearing the first u.s. air strikes in syria could come as soon as thursday. then you've got the fight over the debt ceiling plus all the usual worries pushing the markets lower. nasdaq opened by sandisk this morning. new estimates say the u.s. could hit the debt ceiling as soon as mid october. to remind you, the debt ceiling covers repayment of debt we already have. congress fussing about not raising the debt/z+ ceiling. remember congress set the budget. so as we wade through the politics, and there's a lot of

politics, keep in mind those truths. finally, jon and laura, brand new this morning, facebook issued a report saying governments from 74 countries have asked for information on 38,000 facebook users in the past six months. half those requests coming from the u.s. government. facebook joining google and twitter in revealing as much as it can about demands for data, which is not very much. they wish they could talk about it more. >> interesting. thanks, scott. 6:57, let's clerk back in with christina loren. you have an update on the fire in yosemite. >> we just got the most recent acreage, unfortunately it's not great news. still just 20% contained. now the acreage is up to 179,481 acres up from the 160,000 acres that we reported overnight. so what we can tell you is there's a potential for pretty good showers to move over that fire today. we're going to be watching that for you throughout the day. we should have a good update. at that point some showers expected by 11:00 a.m.

slowing from highway 17 up to saratoga. back to you. thank you very much. 6:58. a final check of the day's top stories. a teenager is dead, two others in the hospital after a car crash in danville. police say the teens were driving near the crow canyon country club when the driver lost control and hit a tree. police sayx the three attend a local high school and were supposed to return to their first day of class this morning. today is the first day of school for students out in newtown, connecticut. students from sandy hook elementary school will be going to classes in a different building in the wake of last year's deadly shooting that killed 20 children and six educators. the school where the shooting happened is slated for demolition. we've just received the new numbers on the rim fire. the containment stays the same as last night at 20%, but the flames are spreading, having scorched nearly 180,000 acres. that's up about 18,000 acres since our last update.
