good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm marla tellez, in for jon kelley. happening now, the rim fire's growing as is a number of resources attacking the flames. more than 4,000 firefighters are in tuolumne county, trying to get the massive wildfire under control. meantime, hundreds of residents wait anxiously hoping homes will be spares. live in sonora where several people spent the night at an emergency shelter. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. firefighters worked overnight and they are making progress. this morning the fire remains only 20% contained. right now, it's threatening 4,500 homes in the area. many of the people evacuated came here to this american red cross shelter in sonora at the fair grounds. linda sales says the smoke was so thick near pine crest she

packed up her dogs and headed to the shelter. now she's anxiously waiting to see if the fire will consume her home. >> i left behind a lot of things and hopefully they'll will be. but i don't know. >> reporter: some people drove their own camps are and trailers down to the shelter and have camped out here for days. firefighters on the front lines are focusing on setting up burn lines to protect tuolumne and other populated areas. so far, this fire has burned more than 100 structures and 31 of those are homes. now yesterday, the high humidity helped out firefighters because it added moisture to the dry grass and brush. and that helped things burn more slowly. but still the erratic winds are a big concern. reporting live in sonora, "today in the bay." the rim fire also releasing massive amounts of smoke into

the air. those plumes are traveling more than 100 miles, clouding skies in nevada, causing health problems for people there. christina loren has new details on the air quality around lake tahoe and reno. good morning. >> let me step out of the way here as a picture does tell a thousand words in this case. you can see that robust smoke plume. let me give you an idea where the bay area stands versus nevada. according to the daily tribune, smoke envoled lake tahoe, the surrounding area into reno, causing air quality to decline. our concern is a lot of people like to hit lake tahoe for labor day weekend, one last summer hurrah. it's not the same experience that you would normally expect this time of year with all of the smoke moving in. we are urging people to rethink those plans. now coming up, i'm going to show

you, we might get more showers. showers over the fire yesterday, very light. today a better chance for seeing shower activity heavy at times over the rim fire. that's coming up. a close look at your local forecast. it's that time when people are making plans and it's not the best year to visit lake tahoe. back to you. >> now to another fire that we're covering today. several families are dealing with a tremendous loss after a grass fire spread to a neighborhood in fairfield. this fire started near i-80 at air base parkway exit and winds carried embers into a neighborhood or marigold drive. two homes were destroyed, three others badly damaged. one point as many as 200 firefighters were on scene trying to put out the flames. investigators are trying to figure out how this fire started. now less than 15 hours away from a total shutdown of the bay bridge. come 8:00, the bridge will be closed to traffic so crews can

work to connect the new eastern span. the closure expected to last through the labor day holiday. "today in the bay's" christie smith live on treasure island with more on what we can all expect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we drove in from the oakland side this morning. before you reached the incline, you can see all of the heavy construction equipment, all of the trucks lined up ready to do the job, work 24/7 over the next couple of days. i wants to show you what the bridge looks like from the tower all the way down the span towards the east bay. you can see it's lit up. the bay bridge closure starts tonight at 8:00. that will mean longer drive times and of course using alternate routes to get around for five days. as contractors build the replacement eastern span work to also realign lanes in oakland and yorba buena island with the new span. after 32 steel rods snapped, new

parts doing well, though. of course, the project moving along. something to remember, though, on treasure island, places like winery, hosting three weddings during the closure. guests will receive passes to drive in from the city side or shuttled in. residents and businesses get the same access, again, from san francisco. b.a.r.t. will have 24-hour service stopping at certain stations. ferries also boost their service to help people get around. the bridge will open 5:00 a.m. tuesday earliest, though, will be monday evening. when the bridge opens the first cars across will be chp motorcade followed by a procession of old cars built around the opening of the original bay bridge in 1936. keep in mind, it's not just the bridge itself but 15 access ramps in and around san francisco will also be closed as well. also, 2500 trucks involved moving asphalt from the east bay

near pleasanton to the east side. keep your patience. the bridge, it's finally getting ready to open. christie smith, "today in the bay." while b.a.r.t. will be key during the one's bay bridge closure, the transit agency and its union still do not have a contract in place. san francisco examiner says no new talks scheduled between b.a.r.t. and its unions until the middle of next month. once negotiations resume on september 17th, two sides will only have three weeks to reach an agreement before a 60-day cooling off period expires. workers allowed strike as early as october 11th. the two sides tens of millions of dollar as part. the main sticking points wage increases, health care costs and pensions. a san jose leader wants to combat obesity by banning sodas and whole milk from city events. not everyone's on board with the plan. jose with more on the sugary drink ban proposal. >> reporter: this proposal is making its way through the process. today the so-called soda pop ban will go before the rules committee of the city council. this is the brainchild of a council member. under his proposed ordinance, all sodas, including diet, banned on city property and at events hosted by the city. the ban would include sports drinks that have more than 42 grams of added sweetener per 20 ounces. it would also include fruit and vegetable drinks that have added sweeteners and the ban includes milk that has more than 2% fat. the councilman says the city cannot stop the obesity epidemic but should do its part to help fight it. one of the most vocal opponents is council member pete constant. he says it's simple-minded to think that sugary drinks are

you might need a sweater. people are telling me santa cruz over past couple of nights has been balmy. they had trouble sleeping because it was so warm. if you can get out there, 75 santa cruz. a strong sea breeze at the coast. that's going to keep temperatures in the 60s and 70s with cloud cover, an on shore flow here. high pressure has its grip. 80 and 90 inland. temperatures drop off, not a lot, but they will drop off as we get into the weekend. labor day usually kicks off the unofficial start of fall. as you know, warm days are numbered at this point. tracking potential for north bay showers and drizzle. i'll show you that in your seven day outlook. 89 livermore. not a bad day in the city by the bay. san francisco yesterday beautiful.

next couple of days, temperatures will climb back up to 90. by friday level off. saturday 85, drizzle on the way for sunday. look at labor day. late monday into tuesday, we've got a system just offshore, could produce light showers in the extreme north bay. tuesday, we'll warm up as high pressure comes back in. mike inouye, it has been really tough on the roads lately. >> yesterday was crazy. maybe a lot of folks trying to get last commute in because they might be taking tomorrow and friday off to avoid the mess in the area. weather playing a factor as well. now here we're showing you the same shot, we have a good flow of traffic, this is 280. the reason impointing this out, southbound a few taillights through the area. the map shows slowing through the same area. didn't see phleproblems. we

5:19. customers at south bay safeway is getting money back. reimbursing 700 rewards members overcharges at the gas station on hamilton in campbell. a customer first reported the problem two years ago when she noticed she did not receive the discounted gas price when she used her rewards card. the chain also paid a civil penalty of or than $46,000. an investigation shows the issue was caused by faulty software. a popular restaurant fame use for its coffee cake will close doors today. hob hobees will shut down in los gados. it will try to replace employees at other locations. >> sad to see it go. two eggs over easy. >> campbell scramble? been there too often. new competition for google.

good morning. live to washington, d.c., as we give you a live look at martin luther king jr. memorial. what an amazing sight on this historic date. 50 years ago he gave his famous "i have a dream" speech. there will be celebration of that coming up later in d.c. 5:23. new competition for google and its driverless cars. nissan plans to start testing such vehicles by next year. hopes to have driverless cars cruise the street business 2020.

kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. firefighters waking up for another day battling the rim fire in tuolumne county the fire's spreading, covering more than 280 square miles, the size of san francisco, oakland, and san jose combined. "today in the bay's" marry ann favro joins us live. >> reporter: good morning. this fire is stubborn and unpredictable. fire crews worked overnight, and they are making progress, but still the fire remains just 20% contained. many of the people who were forced to evacuate came here to this american red cross shelter in sonora last night. they stayed on cots. it gave them peace of mind to know they are safe and so are their pets. the rim fire is the seventh largest wildfire in california history and has scorched 288 square miles. this fire is less than six mimes from the city of tuolumne.

fire crews have been busy establishing burn lines to prevent the flame from reaching populated areas. so far the fire's destroyed 101 structures, 31 homes. this morning, as soon as it's light out, helicopters begin water drops. many of the people who came to this shelter last night say that they were not forced to evacuate but decided to come on their own, because the smoke was simply too much to handle. live from sonora, mary ann favro, "today in the bay." several families dealing with a tremendous loss after a fire destroyed two homes and damaged three more. this fire broke out 3:30 yesterday afternoon in fairfield off interstate 80. fueled by strong winds embers from the flames spread to homes on nearby marigold drive. 200 firefighters from several nearby departments responded.

crews were unable to save five homes. investigators trying to figure out the cause. >> could be as simple as a cigarette, a bottle on the side of the road that catches the sun the right way. with the grass and humidity as low as it is, could be a number of things. >> the flames were up high. it was -- the smoke was unbelievable. almost choking us. >> fighting back tears, one come telling nbc bay area she and her husband do not have renter's insurance, and they lost everything. the salvation army and red cross are helping the families who are left homeless. >> an emergency test could catch people off guard tonight. county is testing a new emergency telephone notification system from the new vender. the current warning system was heavily scrutinizes after the fire in richmond last august. some received alerts late.

incline on the oakland side, lit up. little bit foggy here. between 7:00 and 8:00 tonight the chp will start rolling traffic breaks on the approaches to the bay bridge. 15 connecter ramps have to close down for the job to be done. contractors building the new eastern span, work round the clock to realign the lanes on the oakland side and yorba buena island before the span that was built toer more seismically safe can open. crews have to pave and restripe. a number of jobs going on. a bike path installation. this means commuters are going to have to find a plan b for the next couple of days. find ways to america's cup, cal football games, oakland a's games. what a bridge spokesperson said about the opening. >> the bridge will open when it's ready. the schedule's showing 5:00 a.m. tuesday. >> reporter: it's possible that it could open earlier than that. but when the bridge does finally

envoy to syria says there is evidence suggesting some chemical substance was used, killing hundreds of civilians. envoy says any military strike on syria must have u.n. security council approval. u.n. team of experts has been gathering evidence from an area near damascus where activists say a chemical attack was carried out last week. britain will put forward a resolution condemning syria for the attack. new report claims african-american boys are rashly profiled by police in oakland. the black organizing project analyzes reports from 2006 to 2012. black boys made up almost 3/4 of all juvenile arrests in oakland, even though they make up less than a third of the city's under-18 population. the group will present its findings in a news conference birth the aclu and present a report during a meeting at oakland's unified school for at 6:00. closing arguments expected

to begin in the dirty dui trial of a former contra costa county sheriff's deputy. steven tanabo is accused of helping christopher butler arrange dirty dui arrest for the husband of butler's clients. those arrests were intended for leverage in divorce cases. butler's already serving an it's a eight year sentence and testified against tanabe in the trial. the city council will hear an appeal from an anti-abortion group hoping to stop this new location from opening. back in may, the council approved planned parenthood's application to open a new clinic on grand avenue. opponents say the new clinic would cause parking problems and draw constant protests outside. lawyers for planned parenthood say the clinic is unfairly targeted for ideological

reasons. the meeting starts at 7:00. mosquito fogging happening tonight. crews focus on the board of north and east san jose from berr ber berryessa road and alum rock avenue. the fogging starts at 11:00 weather permitting. watching that and what's go on in yosemite. the rim fire is not giving up. meteorology, christina loren you have a picture from nasa. >> that smoke plume extending all the way into canada. an update of where we are this morning. so far, 184,481 acres burned. as we head throughout the day, for the first part of the day, we are going to continue that southwesterly wind flow at about 5 to 15 miles per hour, gusting 20, 35 miles per hour time to time. later this afternoon, temperatures climb into the upper 80s, big ridge of high pressure that monsoonal moisture headed that way. let me give you an idea.

stop the clock on futurecast at 3:00 p.m. showers around. they did pick up light precipitation in the area. but wasn't enough to do anything except increase humidity. any little bit is going to help this time of year. let me do this again. slow this down for you on thursday afternoon, more showers headed into the area. what happens is, as these showers and thunderstorms creep up from the south, they start to change the wind direction. it makes it more difficult for the firefighters using bulldozers fighting it by air and on foot. it's another rough day for firefighters in the area. but if we see any brief heavy downpours, it could be a blessing for the rim fire. that's what we're watching for for today. we should get our latest update on contakenment. through the next hour and a half, we'll bring it to you as soon as we get it. 55 in gilroy. we're in the 60s in san mateo and san francisco.
