above. checking forecast on wednesday, august 28th. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning. i'm marla tellez in nor jon kell kelley. firefighters trying to hold the line against a growing and stubborn while fire burning into yosemite. this morning at least 280 square acres are charred. that's the size of san francisco, san jose, and oakland combined. 31 homes and 80 other structures burned. more than 4,000 firefighters battling the flames. 20% of the fire is contained. full containment likely won't come for a few more weeks. >> firefighters beat back the flames, more and more people who live in the immediate area are being forced to pack up and leave. favro joins us live where dozens are waking up this morning. >> reporter: good morning. there are 91 people at this shelter this morning. fire crews say they made some progress overnight. but as you mentioned, the fire remains 20% contained. and right now, it is threatening more than 4,000 homes. so, many of the people who were evacuated last night came here to the american red cross shelter in sonora. linda sales says the smoke was so thick near her home near pine crest, she packed up her dogs and headed to the shelter. now anxiously to learn if the fire consumed her home. >> i left behind a lot of things and hopefully they'll will be. but i don't know. when i come back. >> reporter: about 90 people are staying at shelter. some staying in their own trailers and rvs.

the fire has destroyed 101 structures. 31 homes. environmentalists are also concerned about the impact the 184,000 acre fire will have on the old growth forest here. some of the pine and cedar trees are more than 300 years eeold. if they burn we won't see a forest like this again in our lifetime. within the next two hours, helicopters will be back out here dropping water on the flames. also firefighters today plan to develop more burn lines, that will help prevent the fire from jumping over. they especially want to protect tuolumne city, one of the most populated areas in the region. >> not to mention all of the animals running for their lives as well. as the wildfire pushes deep for in yosemite, it's burning within 300 yards of the edge of the hetch hetchy reservoir. a photo taken by the associated

press photographer at hetch hetchy. it's hazy up there with smoke from the wildfire. water experts are testing water every hour at different points. so far, it's still pure. that's because the pipe that brings water have the reservoir is 260 feet below the surface. all of the ash on the top could take weeks to build up near the pipe. keep in mind, the bay area has a six-month emergency supply of water ready to go. san francisco, menlo park, east palo alto, burlingame and mountain view get water from the reservoir. san jose gets 3% of its water from hetch hetchy. >> more coverage of the yosemite while fire including a look how smoke could impact your labor day weekend if if you're in tahoe or reno.

firefighters in fairfield trying to figure out what sparked this grass fire that spread to a neighborhood yesterday. wins really quickly carried embers into a marry goal drive. two homes destroyed, three others damaged. 200 firefighters on scene trying to put out the flames. the red cross taking care of families displaced by the fire. new, a student at chico state is dead after a tree limb fell on her on campus. authorities say she was sitting beneath the tree with friends yesterday when the branch came crashing down. the branch was about 14 inches in diameter. school officials say the tree was inspected before school started and didn't raise any red flags. ann arborist will inspect other trees on campus this week. new video into our newsroom of a house explosion in southern new jersey. you can see from the chopper

video the blast levelled the home. firefighters sprayed water on lingering hot spots. no word on whether anyone was hurt into today is the last day to drive across the bay bridge as we know it. tonight at 8:00, the bridge will shut down completely while crews put the finishing touches on the new eastern span. >> check in with mike inouye live in studio with more on the shut down. >> good morning. i'm sure you might have heard about it, we've been talking about it for months. the bridge going to close for five days so crews connect the new span to the toll plaza over on the east side, oakland side. and the yorba buena island, mid span, the west oends of treasure islandon. for more on the closure, christie smith out there live on treasure island. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we drove in from the oakland side this morning. there's a huge fleet of heavy

duty construction vehicles ready lined up to complete last link of the new eastern span of the bay bridge. it's foggy here on treasure island. i want to step aside so you can look at it yourself. lights from the tower down to the incline on the oakland side. next week, we'll be able to drive on it. what's happening tonight between 7:00 and 8:00, the chp will start rolling traffic breaks at the entrances to the bridge. 15 connecter ramps in all will close down for the next five days. contractors building the new span will realign lanes on the oakland side and yorba buena island with the new bridge. b.a.r.t. will run 24/7 to help out. ferries increase their service as well. there's a winery on treasure island that's hosting three weddings during the closure. guests have to get a pass from caltrans to drive in or shuttled in from the san francisco side. what a spokesperson told us about the most likely scenario for the opening.

up to the bay bridge toll plaza. the toll plaza packed in, happened 5:50 when things started to stack up. slowing down the east shore freeway on the approach. alternate to the south san mateo bridge. folks slowing as you pass 238. there was a disabled vehicle. a number of vehicles reported añ center divide. slowing kicked off and that continues towards san mateo. the highway 92 connecter there. highway 84 the dumbarton bridge. if you're coming from the south, choose that one, it will be less traveled than 92 which is suggested around a street. the san mateo area more crowded, millbrae, san mateo, redwood city because of the folks headed toward the bridge. a crash at tully is cleared. isolated towards 680 and 880. as we skip back up over to the city, smooth drive through the city and into it. golden gate bridge, fog and issue north bound 101 across the

6:13. bay bridge slues down -- shuts down tonight. crews connect the eastern span to the toll plaza and the tunnel on yorba buena island. the new span officially opens by tuesday's commute. more than 4,000 firefighters in tuolumne county battling the rim fire. the fire's burned more than 280 square miles and it is still growing. the good news, firefighters have been able to hold a 20% containment. u.n. inspectors in syria discovered evidence in the chemical substance in the steak that killed hundreds of civilians last week. the u.s. state department there is strong evidence assad is responsible. the uf.n. says any military trie must have approval of the u.n. security council. wall street not sure what to do with the syrian news. >> this adds to the pressure

investors are feeling. >> right. good morning. oil prices are up, gold, too, as investors look for safe spots. debate is, will this be like kosovo where it was over and done in a couple of weeks or will air strikes drag other countries into the fight? wall street does not like that uncertainty. as you point out, it was uncertain about things like the fed's easy money policy. "new york times" website back up and running after the site was taken down, not by attacking it directly but fooling technicians in australia who handled the internet traffic. hackers gained some access to san francisco's twitter but did not take it down. it was by anybody's standards a clever and sophisticated hack attack. new words have been added to the dictionary this morning. yes, twerking is one of them. the oak ford online dictionary has added a number of words,

allowed are sports drinks that have more than 42 grams of added sweetener per 20 ounces, fruit and vegetable drink that have added sweeteners and include mill thak has more than 2% fat. the ordinance composed by the councilman. he cites obesity epidemic as his moats vation for the ordinance. the city cannot stop obesity, it can do its part to help. a vocal opponent of the soda pop ban says it's not their job to tell people how to live. he wonders how far reaching it would be and if it could cover places like the s. -- s.a.p. center. >> they want us giving our children whole milk. but he thinks i shouldn't. who do you think i should listen to? >> the reality is that over 60% of adolescents have one soda a day.

first the drive with man jose's mike inouye. >> sometimes you know when we do these goofy things we have silly names. man jose, cool. bay bridge toll plaza a nice flow of traffic. backup is there because of the metering lights are on. heavy volume building over the last few. folks off the 880 overcrossing and the berkeley curve jamming in there. toward the roadways, i want to show you expecting more flow of traffic down this area. folks not because they're trying to get romantic and take the last drive across the bay bridge, folks trying to pack the last day of full work in across the bridge and taking a lighter day or telecommuting thursday and friday. hopefully everybody has a plan. 7:00, avoid the bay bridge. a disabled vehicle at 980/580 interchange. slowing away from the maze but it's cleared up. that stall is over on the shoulder. we'll take you to the tri-valley.

cross shelter where dozens are waking up. you said under 100 people are there? >> reporter: yes. about 91 people here overnight. some in tents, some in their own rvs, and the rest inside in the shelter. fire crews say they did make some progress overnight. but this is a massive while fire. this morning it is now 23% contained. it has scorched more than 184,000 acres and burned 31 homes. right now the fire's threatening more than 4,000 homes. environmentalists concerned about the impact the fire will have on the old growth forest here. some pine and cedar trees more than 300 years old. if they burn, we won't see a forest like this again here in our lifetime. because the wall of flames is so high, wildlife experts fear a few animals will survive. if they do, they won't be able

come next week, the years of waiting for it to open will be over. as contractors building the replacement eastern span that's more seismically safe work around the clock to realign lanes in oakland and yorba buena with the bridge. tonight as early as 7:00 p.m., chp will rolling traffic breaks around entrances to the bridge. 15 connecter ramps close down. then commute have to use options like b.a.r.t., running 24/7, ferries also boosting service. treasure island, a winery has three weddings planned during the closure. guests have to get a caltrans pass to drive in or take a shuttle from san francisco. residents and businesses can have access from san francisco. bridge will open is tuesday morning at 5:00 a.m. could be as early as monday night. when the bridge does finally open, the first cars to cross, chp motorcade followed by
