washington to honor the civil rights leader and reflect on how far we've come today, wednesday, august 28th, 2013. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning. welcome to "today." it's 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on a wednesday. i'm matt lauer. >> good morning everyone. i'm savannah guthrie along with tamron hall. this is where dr. king said those iconic words back in 1963 where president obama will deliver a speech of his own in a few hours and take a look at that very spot 50 years ago today where martin luther king had that poignant statement that's been a call to action so many generations afterwards.

>> when you read about the history of this and think of the preparation, a quarter of a million people gathered on that day 50 years ago in a violence-free protest against a lack of civil rights and jobs. >> a moment that means so much to so many. al is there. he's in washington. he'll speak with the son of martin luther king jr. in a moment. we will begin with some breaking news. the crisis in syria. >> even as the u.s. military prepares to launch missiles at syria, a group of renegade computer hackers with close ties to the syrian military rallied to the defense of syrian president bashir al assad by attacking, of all things, "the new york times" and twitter. for the second time in two weeks, "the new york times" website crashed on tuesday. a group of computer hackers called the syrian electronic

army, supporters of assad, claimed responsibility. the site was down for several hours before it was restored. twitter, meanwhile, is investigating a hack on its own site. a nuisance, but no national security threat, at least not yet. >> they decided to go after financial institutions or other sectors of critical infrastructure, that would be far more concerning to the u.s. government. >> all this as the u.s. gears up for an attack of its own on the syrian military. cruise missiles will be the u.s. military's weapon of choice. four u.s. navy guided missile destroyers with up to 90 missiles each and at least one submarine are already in position in the eastern mediterranean. the assault would come at night to reduce the possibility of civilian casualties. at the american legion convention in houston, vice president joe biden pledged syria must be held accountable. >> there's no doubt who is responsible for this heinous use

of chemical weapons in syria. the syrian regime. >> the prime targets, planes, rocket launchers, and artillery used to launch deadly chemicals but not the chemical weapons themselves. and the syrian leadership, including bashir al assad, are not on the target list. there's no word this morning that president obama has given the order. once he does, it could be just a matter of hours before those missiles are flying. matt? >> all right, jim. thanks so much. retired four-star general barry mccaffrey is an nbc news analysis. good morning. good to see you. >> morning, matt. >> let me start by asking you this. some sources in the administration have been briefing reporters on background about our possible course of action against the syrian military, the weapons of choice and perhaps even the timing of it. what good comes of that? why are they doing that? >> well, it's hard to say.

this strikes me as very confused signaling of political intent through military power. a strike on the syrian armed forces, which the white house has reassured them is not aimed at getting assad, not aimed at regime change, not aimed at changing the trajectory of the war, will not, in my view, have any impact on the survivalist instinct of assad, the hezbollah militia, the iranian revolutionary guards. it doesn't make much sense. if we gave the u.s. air force and navy 60 days to go after these people, we'd get their armed helicopters, their aircraft, their artillery. we're not going to do it with a couple days. >> what we're hearing is cruise missiles launched from ships in the gulf striking military targets like the air force planes, command and control and radar. what you're telling me is that will not change at all the balance of power on the ground? >> absolutely not.

the country's happen destroyed. 100,000 people have been killed. 15% of the population believe they will be exterminated if they lose the sunni muslim majority of the country. it's hard to see why we don't either use military power or use it effectively. the b-2 bombers may also be in the attack. they could make a big difference. in my judgment, it would take multiple days or weeks to dramatically change the situation on the ground. you can't protect innocent civilians from aircraft. >> and let's just be clear. what is prompting this potential military action is the use of chemical weapons by the assad regime against its own people. yet, everybody says the chemical weapons deposits or supplies are off the target list, so there's no way that an attack like this can prevent assad from using chemical weapons in the future.

>> no, that's right. these things get distributed by aircraft, bombs, sprayed from helicopters, fired from artillery or rockets. so you have to go after the delivery systems and the command and control. by the way, we're doing this, as you know, matt, without congressional authorization, u.n. approval, or for that matter a broad consensus among the arab league. will they be with us? we see sunni muslim egyptian and saudi aircraft involved in this operation? i doubt it. >> we all wait to see what happens. perhaps even in the next 24 hours. general barry mccaffrey, thanks very much. >> good to be with you, matt. >> savannah? >> matt, thank you. as we mentioned, this is the 50th anniversary of martin luther king's "i have a dream" speech. crowds are starting to gather now on the national mall where president obama is set to speak from the very same spot where dr. king gave that iconic address. nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker has more.

kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. president obama has delivered big speeches before, but this one is different. he'll be speaking in the shadow of dr. king, a man who gave his life fighting for civil rights. so today the stakes couldn't be higher. >> i have a dream today. >> reporter: they are words that helped change a nation and pave the way for this historic moment. >> i, barack hussein obama -- >> reporter: so when the first black president stands on the steps of the lincoln memorial today in the same place as dr. martin luther king jr., there will be great expectations. >> everyone is just so excited about it. >> he needs to stress that the work of the civil rights movement is not finished. >> reporter: aides admit the president feels the pressure. during a radio interview tuesday, mr. obama tried to lower the anticipation. >> it won't be as good as the speech 50 years ago. >> are comparisons inevitable? sure. but i think he's looking forward to the opportunity. >> reporter: this top adviser says the president's remarks

will focus on progress made and challenges that lie ahead. >> i think as the original speech was about not just civil rights, but it was about jobs. i think he'll talk about that. i think it will be a message to the next generation. >> reporter: but obama critics called on the president to do more than just talk. >> where racism and poverty are concerned, there is no excuse for this administration not talking about it. we have to move on and start to emulate king with our deed. >> reporter: this isn't the first time the president has spoken against today's historic backdrop. five years ago he accepted his nomination in denver on the 45th anniversary. still, this moment is different. >> it's one thing to sort of talk about the greatness of the moment, talk about history and to give beautiful words, but i think what people want to come away with is a call to action. that's what the 1963 speech was. >> reporter: now, aides tell me president obama will fine-tune his speech throughout the day. in preparation, he consulted with civil rights leaders as

well as faith leaders, and he placed a personal phone call to congressman john lewis, the last living speaker from that 1963 march. savannah? >> all right, kristen welker at the white house. thank you. >> tamron was just mentioning that the entire speech, the entire "i have a dream" speech during that march on washington was -- >> 17 minutes. matt, you said these days people give these hour-long speeches. to know that 17 minutes lasts forever has made such an impact. should be a lesson to everyone. he was just in his early 30s. we forget he was a young man with that responsibility on his shoulders. >> it's so rarely seen in its entirety. on msnbc we will broadcast the entire speech. we'll see that 4:00 eastern time. meantime, a check of the news. >> a lot to catch up on, especially this massive wildfire near yosemite national park. it's become one of the largest wildfires on record in california. nbc's miguel almaguer is there with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: tamron, good morning.

this is where some of the more than 4,000 firefighters come to rest after a long shift on the front lines. they may sleep in cots or 9/eve in their rigs. this blaze is 20% contained because they are working around the clock. before sunrise at base camp outside yosemite national park, a briefing and a pep talk. >> it's going to get a little hairy. >> reporter: the chief knows his team faces a monster. >> we got to reassure them, let them joke a little bit, otherwise they'd be crying and curled up in a ball. >> reporter: igniting controlled burns overnight, crews clear dried fuel before the wildfire can reach it. the trees and brush haven't burned or been cleared here in decades. that's the problem, says environmentalist. >> if congress had provided enough funds to do fuel work and prescribed burning, the devastation of hot fire runs could have been greatly reduced. >> reporter: with 287 square miles destroyed, it's from the

air where the scope of this fire is realized. all along these ridges we can see more spot fires. there's no doubt this fire is growing. it's certainly quickly on the move. the view from 10,000 feet, jaw dropping. the aerial assault, the only tactical option available out here. there it goes. 3,000 gallons of fire retardant doing what it can to stop the advance of the flames. in the air, on the ground, day and night, the fire fight outside yosemite is nearly two weeks old with no end in sight. wow. literally no other way to describe it. though there's been some steady progress on the flank of this fire, 4500 homes remain threatened, 31 have been destroyed. tamron? >> all right, miguel. incredible details there. and new fears this morning that iraq could be hurdling back towards civil war after another wave of deadly violence. a coordinated series of bombings tore through muslim areas in and

around the iraqi capital killing at least 66 people and wounding many more. the blast targeted residents out shopping and on their way to work. more than 500 people have been killed there just this month. now to wall street and what's moving the markets. let's check in with mary thompson. good morning. >> good morning, tamron. we are seeing a turn around on wall street. stocks rebounding slightly from wednesday's slight. fears about the situation in syria rippled through the markets. concerns about a possible military action against the country pushing oil prices higher this morning. closer to home, pending home sales fell 1.3% last month. economists had forecasted it would be unchanged from june's levels. if they're not buying homes, consumers are buying jewelry. retailers zales posting strong sales for the last month. back to you. >> all right, mary. thank you. and caught on camera, a frightening moment after our nation's symbol makes a crash landing. it happened during a chapel service.

lewis the bald eagle was supposed to fly from the back of the chapel and then land on its handler's arm. instead, take a look at what happened. you see the bird crashed into a window and fell to the ground. its handler rushed over to pick him up. the good news here, lewis is expected to be fine. a scary moment there. it is now 14 minutes past the hour. matt and savannah, a lot of people wondering why they would have an eagle flying there. it was supposed to be this patriotic moment and it just went bad. >> so glad to hear the eagle is okay. thank you. >> let's get a first check of the weather from al, who is standing in washington. what's it looking like down there, al? >> right now it's a little bleak. we're doing sound checks with some of the gospel choirs. as you look at the reflecting pool, you can see all the rain drops falling. there are folks who are already starting to line up.

they are all holding umbrellas. they've all got ponchos on because it's going to rain. we're going to see this maybe break around noon. then a heavier line of showers and thunderstorms come in later this afternoon, possibly during the final moments of this ceremony. but that will not dampen spirits, obviously. a lot of folks are really excited and committed to coming down and taking part in this. let's take a look at our fire weather for our friends out west. not a lot of great news. the winds are still coming out of the southwest. variable at times. 90 degrees, low humidity. and there's going to be dry lightning. that could spark more showers and thunderstorms, could spark more fires. let's show you what's going on as far as our western weather is concerned. san diego, sunny, 79. tucson, 97. another toasty day in denver with 93. same in casper. showers move into the pacific northwest. seattle, you're looking at rain and a high of 80 degrees.

millions worth of silver. he's here behind bars. >> reporter: authorities say blaine nordall was on the prowl for more than three decades but no more. >> this time you can stick a fork in him, but no more, he's done. >> reporter: cat burglar, nicknamed the burglar to the stars, he's accused of being a celebrity thief. there's even a wikipedia page talking about his heists. bruce springstein, billy joel, steven spielburg and curt goudy. he's snatched over $6 million worth of silver. his m.o. was always the same. case a mansion, break in undetected, quietly steal the silver sometimes while the homeowners were asleep in their beds. his ability to elude authorities like a movie. catch me if you can. >> you're going to have to catch me. >> reporter: police consider him a master thief, always one step

ahead, that is until monday. acting on a tip, deputies captured nordall in tiny hi hillyard. >> he seems to get a thrill on sneaking into someone's home and stealing their expensive silver. >> reporter: his latest targets were members of atlanta's high society. one member said she lost precious heirlooms. >> he took antiques, flatware. he knew exactly what to take. >> reporter: he's a suspect in 70 burglaries in 7 stakes. he knows the stakes. he's lost before. 17 years ago he was nabbed for breaking into yvonne na trumps home. >> i've been chasing him long enough. i think this is really the end. >> reporter: this detective has hunted him most of his career. abruzini was relentless helping

jobs and freedom but these words resinate 50 years later. >> i have a dream today. >> the words "i have a dream" were not in king's written speech. he added them as he spoke. now they're seared in our minds. >> president kennedy invited us back down to the white house saying, you did a good job. you did a good job, and when he got to dr. martin luther king jr. he said, and you had a dream. >> i was five years old in 1963 but i remember when mom and dad came home how excited they were because it was a period of uplifting and hope. >> hope and courage. this was a turbulent time in america, the '60s. >> this is a very different country than it is now. segregation was the rule and the law in most of the south.

steve is aentleman taking care of his elderly parents. good morning to both of you. >> hi. >> headlines and one jumped out at me. >> 81% of us do believe that we owe our parents. people want to be involved. they want to take care of their parents. we are not abandoning our aging parents. >> the other side of the coin is 26% of us say we don't know what is involved and what it's going to take and how to plan for this. >> that's right. for the survey we finded to find out where the boundaries of elder care are. what do we expect to do, what do we think we're not going to do? we did find a lot of people are not talking specifically about these issue. there's no prenup and people g into it blind. >> steve i'll bring you in in a second but this struck me also, young men between the ages of 18 and 29 were twice as likely to be concerned about having to provide emotional and physical support for their parents than women of the same age.

can you explain that gender difference? >> we have the gender difference that men are steps up to the plate and starting to be more involved in elder care in a way that's inspiring. but also a generational thing going on where young men want to stay involved with their children and this suggests the want to stay involved with with their aging parents as well. >> and steve, that bring you in. you have three kids, 5, 8, 10. >> that's right. >> you are caring for them but also caring for your elderly parents. >> that's correct. >> but they're in an assisted living facility. >> yes. >> how far in aance did you prepare for this reality. >> it started about 10 years ago. we started talking about it. we didn't take action on it until about a year ago and then finally, thi past april, we did move them from michigan to near boston, near me. >> can i -- you have a sister. >> i do. >> you are emotionally as close to your parents.

>> yes. >> but you have taken on this responsibility and without putting pressure on her, i'm wondering why. >> right. it came down to my kids. my kids are younger. my sister's kids are a little bi older. so when we had to make that decision and whether they go to north carolina or they come to massachusetts, we said, you know what, let's allow them to have time with the grand kids. and it has worked out that way. they are able to spend mor time. >> that's a pro. have there been any cons? have there been any pressures that it's placed on your relationship, for ple? >> well, the one ironic thing is when i first thought about it i thought well, it will be great beuse they'll be able to spend time with my grandparents, but at the same time, i have had to take a lot of time caring for my parents so it has taken time away from me with my kids. >> when elderly parents don't live in an assisted living

facility but come live in the home with the children and grand children, what's the impact there? >> this can be very stressful and, in fact, mt elderly parents don't want to live with their adult children and their adult children don't want them there. assisted living is ideal for many people. when it works it can be marvelous. being able to be there for your parents at the end of their lives is such an honor. >> i think the second most important take away, other than the fact we all feel as if this is the right thing to do, you have to start having these discussions early. >> absolutely. you need to start talking specifically about what you expect to do and what your parents want from you. >> that's a reality a lot of us are facing. thank you so much. i appreciate it. >> thank you very much. >> when we come back, we'll have back to school bar gains for your kids. where to find new looks and much more. but first, this is today on nbc.

>> we should start by listening to a little of the speech by martin luther king. >> when freedom rings, when we let it ring from every state and every city. we will be able to speed up that day when all of god's children, black men and white men, jews and gentiles, protestants and catholics will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old negro spiritual, free at last, free at last. thank god almigh, we are free at last. >> august 28th, 1963. that's a 34-year-old martin luther king, jr. when you trace the history to what's going to happen today, president barrack obama will stand on that same step and deliver a speech. he was two years old. his mother or grandparents were probably watching the speech somewhere. could they have ever imagined the possibility in the time of police dogs and segregation and

colored water fountains that their son, their grandson would be there president of the united states. >> when he made his speech, he talked about having hope and replacing fear with hope which was very reminiscent of what martin luther king was saying. when i rewatched it of course, you just think about and words like security of justice. things that we, many of us still take for granted. >> one of the great elements of the story, you can read about it online is how the speech came to be. it was a scripted speech. he is reading off his notes. you watch it online and you'll see it. the greats gospel singer shout up, martin tell them about the dream. >> that was improved so then he goes off the speech. the i have a dream par of that speech is a rif.

>> total rif. >> there was a young boy just volunteering that day that came up to him at the end and said dr. king may i please have that speech and he folded it up and gave it to him and he said it is not to be sold. he has been offered $3.5 million for it. >> good for him. it's a huge day. we wan to hear from you about this. tweet us with the #dreamday. we want to hear what your dreams and what you're feeling today. michael douglas of course had cancer that he has been dealing with. catheri catherine zeta jones. it's difficult, i don't have to tell you, it's difficult to have two famous people in a relationship in the public eye. >> it's difficult for anybody going through divorce. if you are that scrutinized it can be augmente i think it's hard in small towns in schools. people love to gossip. i think they have both been through a lot. sptting is different than separating. sepating, you don't know. it's just so -- it's so sad that they -- it's sad. it's always sad. i find it very sad. >> does it put added pressure, though, having two people that are well-known? we always see- i thinkf matt damon, the relationship where one person is not in the business and you're allowed to keep some normalcy in your life but two famous people everybody nts to know about your life all the time. >> you're a bit more

scrutinized. in my -- in our case, when i was divorced and we had a very public marriage, public divorce, we had only been married a few years. we didn'tave any children a we were very young. so i think the possibility -- we came together for a very specific reason and it helped us both and it was time to mov on. people got over it pretty quickly. >> you had a pretty ambicable split. >> very. >> they have gone through a lot. my husband les on the west coast so it's like a commute to separate bathrooms and farther apart. maybe that's why we're married so long. maybe a little separation is okay. >> 3,000 miles apart seems to be the answer. >> i wish them the best. >> we do. >> peace in their heart. >> we wish the both of them the very best. >> a story that caught our eye in the wall street journal this morning talking aboutork place

young and old. among the 250,000 people in attendance that day, gordon, a u.s. park service ranger working on the stage next to martin luther king, jr. rosemary mcgill, a teenage civil rights protestor. and edith payne there with her mother on her 12th birthday. joining me is edith, a community activist and her two granddaughters, thank you. so nice to see you laes. thank you for joining us. that banner there says it all ms. payne. you were 12 years old. it was your birthday on that day. >> that's right. it was mybirthday. i came with my mother who wanted to join dr. king as he had asked her in june in detroit to stand with those to make a difference in what was happening in the south. >> so you drove from detroit with your mom, came down here. what was this like? 50 years ago, when this mall was

filled with, you were one of a quarter of a million americans. >> actually we took the greyhound bus. it was a wonderful experience. it was a very, very hot humid day but it was so incredible to see so many people fro all walks of life all standing together in unity after havg heard so many disturbances. buthere was no fr that there would be anything happening because everyone shared the same goal. >> well, it's 50 years later. it's your birthday again and now you came from detroit, drove from detroit, with your granddaughte granddaughters, why. >> i drove because i wanted my granddaughters to have the experience that i had 50 years ago. so they'll have the same kind of hope that i have for what we're facing in today's associate. >> what are your thoughts about this? you have seen the videos. you have talked to your grandmother. what are you looking forward to today? >> i'm looking forward to seeing obama. >> president obama. >> yes and my grandma has taught

me a lot about everything. like people in the south couldn't do what she did. like go to school with white people, drink out of the same water fountain, have friends. >> so you appreciate what people like your grandmother did to help move civil rights forward and destiny, you're a little older. you have to be pretty proud of your grandmother. >> yes, a lot. i'm very proud of her. she is a role model to me. >> and what are you looking forward to doing today and hearing today? >> i am going to cherish this day a lot. my mother is not wit me ashe was 50 years ago. she passed away, but she and s many others stood together and they made a difference for us to even be where we are right now and with my granddaughters and others, they can carry us forward. >> did you think you'd ever be standing here and listening to a black preredent speaking and

addressing a crowd where martin luther king stood? >> no. i never thought that would happen. i'm so proud that it did happen in my lifetime. so this is an incredible experience and wonderful honor and it's a great way to celebrate and commemorate dr. martin luther king and all of those that stood for us. >> thank you so much. we appreciate you. willie, brooke, back to you guys. >> thank you. great interview there. here in the studio, a retired new york ste trooper and rosemary mcgill, a multicultural specialist at eastern florida state college. good morning to you both. >> good morning. >> i want to say what a cool thrill it is for us to have you here in our studio on this incredible day. i'm looking at that old picture of you 50 years ago. how does a 25-year-old park ranger get that spot on the stage next to dr. martin luther king? >> i believe it was the luck of the draw, basically. i never could find out why i was positioned there. but i was there and i was

supposed to get a relief and i never got a relief. i was there for the entire day. >> the whole day. >> yes. >> what did you see as you looked out at the crowd? >> amazing. we suspected that there was going to be problems. we expected we would have 10 to 20,000 people coming to the memorial. and when that sea of people showed up, it was unbelievable. it was a thrill and a lot of mixed feelings that hopefully things would go well. the singers and entertainers beforehand seemed to have a calming effect until dr. king came up with his speech. beautiful speech. >> can i call you guny? >> sure. >> what was the biggest change that you experienced from after that day? how you lived your life? how did you change after that? >> well, i continued in aareer of law enforcement and it was a

ry important position in our country at that time with the demonstrations and civil rights movements and things. i think it made me a better policeman, a more fair policeman and i tried to practice that always. >> thank you. rosemary, i just have to ask you, you were so young, you were 19 at the time, you were an activist, and you said that when you got there, you were so, so surprised at what you saw. can you explain that? >> yes, two weeks prior to the march i h been in st. augustine supporting dr. robert haley and it was there that i met the klan and i had a bitter taste in my mind regarding my white counte part so when i got to washington i was inwe and taken aback by the multicultural

the good news though, the firefighters, they have been able to get more containment on these flames now at 23% containment. a san jose city councilman is introducing a bill today to ban sugary drink and whole milk at city properties and events. it's a move to promote healthier diets. the proposal first needs approval by the council's agenda-setting committee. we will check that forecast and mike will look at the roads after the break.
