loren. temperatures are nice and mild all across the board. we have a warm day today, a warm day tomorrow and a cooler holiday weekend. i'll show you how that looks on your seven-day outlook. fast food workers in the east bay are ready to hit the pickett lines as part of a nationwide strike. i'm arturo santiago live in oakland. i'll have details on this coming up. we'll have live looks outside this morning. this is a look at the morning commute, 101 in the south bay. keeping tabs on that big bay bridge shutdown as well. it's thursday, august 29. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning. i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. we're in the midst of a total shutdown of the bay bridge toll plaza. a lot of action going on right now, but not the kind of traffic we're used to seeing. construction crews are working around the clock to get the new

eastern span ready. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station where riders are bracing for packed train cars. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you. we were at macarthur this morning. we moved to west oakland. i have to tell you the west oakland station is pretty busy considering the hour. we come here to talk with people and normally we don't see much activity until later. i spoke with a station agent saying they're getting more people talking about prices, ticket pritss, how to get around on b.a.r.t. it seemed there were more first-time riders out this morning all because the bay bridge is, of course, closed. this is day one of the five-day closure in preparation for the opening of the new eastern span on tuesday. 280,000 commuters normally use the bay bridge each day. so today all the planning the use the ferries, b.a.r.t., ac transit, all of them offering extra service. today it will all be put to the

test. >> our department changed our working hours to 4:00 a.m. to accommodate the delay. my best alternative is going to be taking b.a.r.t. so that means i'm probably going to have to get up about 2:00 in the morning. >> reporter: transportation planners are suggesting that you leave one to two hours early just to make sure that you get there on time. ac transit, of course, the bus service can't cross the bridge either. so extra pickup and drop-off spots are at macarthur, west oakland, north berkeley and the coliseum b.a.r.t. stations. i wanted to show you real quickly, this is the parking lot at the west oakland station. normally it would be much emptier than this. normally a lot more activity than normal. live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> and with christie talking about the mass transit system, we'll talk about the roadways themselves. we're looking over here toward the berkeley curve. the sign above shows over off to the right folks would normally head to the bay bridge, they're

changing the traffic flow right now. i'll get an update on what's going ochblt earlier that roadway had been closed. we'll continue to update there as we look towards the bridget self. it is still closed for business as far as the morning commute is concerned. to the south we have the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge both. i have seen a heavier volume of traffic that we typically see coming across the westbound. use the dumbarton bridge. the golden gate bridge we'll get a look as travel to and from the city has calmed down. earlier, about 4:30, 4:35 i saw a lot of traffic going across the bridget self. i don't hear about any problems. there is a crash on the northbound side. the traffic flow across the bridget self should be reinstated pretty soon. of course, we have the updates there, marla. we have the wet stuff, right? >> any time you can go to nbcbayarea.com to.

there's a bay bridge closure guide. there you'll find traffic maps and transit alternatives. it is 5:03. now to the latest in syria. president obama is vowing that american retaliation for the syrian government's alleged use of chemical weapons would send a strong signal. the president says he's sure the syrian government is behind the attack that killed hundreds of people last week and this morning we could find out why. u.s. intelligence officials will brief congressional leaders on exactly what evidence convinced president obama that syria's government was responsible. 116 lawmakers signed a letterpress suring the president to get congressional approval before taking any military action. but mr. obama has signaled he could act even without backing from america's allies or the u.n. in less than two weeks is when firefighters say they hope to have the massive rim fire burning near yosemite fully contained. there's good news to report this morning as crews are managing to gain a little bit of ground against the flames.

the fire is now 30% contained. yesterday at this time it was 23%. it has charred more than 300 square miles. that's an area about the size of new york city. so far 111 structures including 11 homes have been destroyed and 5,500 more are still threatened. it's the sixth largest wildfire in state history. this morning sunnyvale police are warning women who tend to walk alone at night are urged to leave their jewelry at home. victims near ponderosa park were women walking alone with a visible chain around their neck. police say the same man is likely reresponsible for the attacks. so far no rest. all the victims luckily were not hurt. a menlo park officer is in the hospital after he was hurt during a violent struggle with an alleged gunmen. officers were trying to arrest the suspect on willow road.

the man resisted. during the chaos one officer was hurt, taken to stanford hospital where he is in stable condition this morning. meanwhile witnesses say the suspect had shot another man during a fight earlier in the night. that victim is expected to be okay. the suspect was arrested for attempted murder. fast food workers in the bay area will be walking off the job this morning as part of a nationwide strike. they're asking for more money to try to keep up with the high cost of living. "today in the bay's" arturo santiago live in oakland where mcdonald's workers will start picketing a little more than an hour from now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. there are not a lot of people out here right now. this is where a lot of east bay fast food workers are scheduled to walk off the job at this mcdonald's on the 2500 block of east 12th street in oakland. as you said, it happens at 6:30 this morning. but they are not alone. this is part of an unprecedented strike taking place in 35 cities across the country. the strikers want $15 an hour in

wages, regular schedules, benefits and the right to form a union without any retaliation. they're also calling for an end to what they call unfair labor practices. now, median front line fast food workers make just over $8.00 an hour. according to the national restaurant association only 5% of restaurant employees earn the minimum wage. those that do are predominantly working part time and half are teen ablers. >> it's so important because these are people that have families, have kids, need to support their kids and family. other people like me, i want to go back to school. i can't go back to school on what i'm making. >> the fastest growing industry in the city is retail and fast food workers. it's a race to the bottom because they cannot survive on minimum wage in jobs that unfortunately are a race to the bottom. >> reporter: the strike isn't affecting just fast food chains like mcdonald's wendy's and

73 in fremont. 66 in oakland and 77 at noon in concord. meanwhile you'll already be at 64 degrees at lunchtime in san francisco. if you can get out there, maybe lunch on the water, how does that sound today? 90 in livermore, 90 in fairfield. a little preview of the weekend, 89 degrees, another hot day tomorrow and then as we get into saturday and sunday, the temperatures drop off. we're talking great barbecue weather about everywhere across the bay area. we'll have that update for you and there's so many events happening out there. we'll take a look at a couple of those. first want to check on the drive and it could be a bad one. good thing mike inouye is here to help us out. >> good thing our crews here on the technical side are here to sort things out. we have the golden gate bridge camera unfrozen. now you see, yes, there is a good volume of traffic and more lights than we typically see on a thursday coming across the span. we have a smooth flow from the north bay to and from the city. the golden gate bridge of course one of the alternates heading

north. construction still on schedule for the bay bridge as far as we know. we look at the map and we see that if you head north through the city across the golden gate bridge you travel through marin county. the stb side which should be the bulk of your commute, a little slowing around 131, tiburon because of a deer that was hit in the last few minutes. that is clearing to the shoulder. unfortunately that deer was hit and killed. fortunately no more injuries reported. the richmond bridge one of your alternates. here is your san mateo bridge, good volume as well. moving smoothly, another alternate to the south. 5:10. walmart is expanding in the south bay. where it plans to open up two new grocery stores coming up. tech pioneer john mcafee has a new video for you. serial killer joseph naso now tied to a sixth bay area homicide. what prosecutors are saying this morning. ♪

welcome back. this is a live look at the ferry building in oakland. this is an alternate route for you now that the bay bridge is closed. we have a complete guide on our website, nbcbayarea.com. logon to find out the latest there. it's 5:13. walmart is planning to bring two neighborhood markets to san jose along with 200 new jobs. one of the locations will be in the old circuit city store. the other will be part of a 20-acre shopping center constructed near monterey avenue and alma avenue. how do smaller stores compete? scott mcgrew says with loyalty cards. i have dozens of these. >> i do, too. entrepreneurs call that a pain point, a problem that needs solving. cicso systems and 7-eleven today investing more than $10 million in a startup called belly to

three-day skid with marginal gains on wednesday. now, investors continue to focus on the growing possibility of a u.s.-led military strike on syria, and that pushed the energy stocks higher yesterday as the price of oil rose to its highest level in more than two years, above $110 a barrel. we are watching crude prices. they've eased a bit this morning. meantime asian markets rebounding overnight and europe steady today. the jitters over immediate action against syria. those are easing a little bit. economic data also on the front burner. look for reports on unemployment, gdp as well which may show the economy grew more than previously thought this spring. the dow rising 38 points to 14,824. the nasdaq adding 14 to close at 3,593. scott? >> jackie, thank you much. 5:15. super strange tech pioneer john mcafee posted another video to the internet and answers viewers' questions. he says he gets four questions

conditions. 60s across the board, even where you're from, marla, in wine country where a lot of people will be flocking. 61 in santa rosa, 62 in napa and 63 to kickoff a thursday. so close to the weekend now. down in gilroy. here is where we're headed today. good air quality in the bay area. you have moderate air quality in the central bay elsewhere. right in the good range which is really great. we didn't have that many spare-the-air days. not expecting many as we head through the next couple weeks. high pressure is not going to be the dominant feature, especially this weekend. we'll see a cool weather pattern as the jet stream takes a dip to the south. we're talking about the air quality in tahoe because of the rim fire. a lot of people from the bay area like to head up there this time of year. let's get you the latest information. 192,000 acres plus at this point. our last update was about nine hours ago. waiting on the latest right now. they were able to gain some containment overnight.

air quality in tahoe is in the unhealthy range. not the best place to take your family. reno is actually worse. a lot of people like to head to reno. the smoke will stay in the area for the next few days. hopefully firefighters -- it will be easier for them to knock that thing down. noon to 2:00 p.m. frkts santa cruz will be really comfortable. the beaches will be your best choice. anywhere along the coastline as we get lieu the next three days with the strong west early flow. we're looking pretty good in the bay area. the smoke is expected to come our way for the next five to six days. hopefully at that point at about 60% containment. the weather is favorable for today. 90 in livermore, 70 in san francisco, 81 in san jose. here it is, next three days looking good. we'll drop off into the mid 80s. low 80s on the way for labor day.

which means all your outdoor plans will be comfortable. >> we have the camera turned from emeryville towards the bay bridge toll plaza. here are the metering lights. a lot going ong there as well. that's not the connection going on. that's the drainage work they're also doing. a lot of improvements going on for the bay bridge. while the closure is happening, because of that closure we'll take you out and talk about the maps and avoidance of that area. slowing coming down toward the berkeley curve. heading down toward that san mateo bridge which moves very smoothly right now. throughout the east bay, we still have your regular b.a.r.t. service and across the bay itself. no delays reported. mass transit reported on time with extended 24-hour service for some of the b.a.r.t. lines. give you a live look outside to the foster city side of 92. you'll see more cars.

a heavier volume already across 92. expect that throughout the weekend closure which is still, as we understand it, on time for the tuesday opening at the latest. tuesday at 5:00 a.m. the south bay is basically unaffected by any of the traffic flow change. serial killer joseph naso still needs to be sentenced for the murders of four bay area women. marin county investigators have linked him to the body of a woman who washed ashore. last week he was convicted of murdering four women in the 1970s and '90s. now a preview of an exclusive investigative unit report. almost two months after the

81 right in the middle in san jose. let's check on your drive with mike inouye. >> a lot of construction clearing from our bay area roads, but not this one. this is the bay bridge. we have the construction still slated to reopen the bridge tuesday at 5:00 a.m., at the latest. maybe earlier. i think a lot earlier, maybe the previous day. looking at the berkeley curve over to the right. folks are funneling down past the scene over towards south 880 or east 580, slowing at the flares and the closure. to the north your richmond san rafael bridge moves smoothly. that labor day weekend, we've turned off the lights. san mateo bridge moving smoothly. a heavier volume south of the bay bridge. a cat fight of sorts going on in the peninsula. tonight a community meeting held in mountain view to talk about the proposed animal ordinance. it requires all house cats to

station. she'll tell us about what the particulars are right now. meanwhile looking at oakland, 880 past the coliseum. we're focusing on 880 itself. a lot of lights. more lights than we typically see, 5:31 on a typical thursday. folks are using 880 as the connector between the bay bridge and the san mateo bridge. another look outside. we'll see the san mateo bridge over towards the peninsula. look at the big steady stream. a lot more traffic than we typically see. again, 101 and 92 showing increased volume. no major slowing along the peninsula. a smooth drive between san mateo and the city itself. in the north bay, the curves as terra linda with a lot of traffic as well. folks using the richmond-san rafael bridge. we'll send it back to you and hopefully get updates on the delays across the bay bridge. well, there is no bay bridge crossing. we'll talk about the delays

across the san mateo bridge as it builds. a little later this morning, we'll find out what will happen to the old eastern span. the metropolitan transportation commission will hold a news conference to outline the demolition process. it's going to take about three years to completely dismantle the span. there are a lot of differences between the old span and the new one. the most highly touted, the new span's safety and ability to withstand an earthquake. also experted to have better lighting with lenses focusing on keeping the bridge well lit. the deck also be side by side with great views of the bay. the new span is expected to have a life span of 150 years. for more on the closure, go to nbcbayarea.com, you'll see a link on the top left-hand corner for our bay bridge closure guide. inside you'll find traffic maps, traffic alternates as well as our live bay bridge camera. you can sign up to receive traffic alerts sent directly to you. firefighters are slowly gaining ground on the massive

rim fire. it's more than 192,000 acres, roughly the size of new york city. while firefighters now have the fire 30% contained, more than 5500 structures are still threatened, including thousands of homes. evacuation orders remain in place for some camp sites in yosemite as well as tuolumne city. the rim fire has destroyed 111 buildings including is 1 homes. more than 4500 firefighters are working around the clock. run, hide, defend. that's a new safety plan in place in santa clara county if someone opens fire on a school campus or anyplace where children are present. police chiefs from departments across the county spent the past several months developing the new active shooter safety protocol. today more than 450 people including representatives from dozens of schools and the children's discovery museum will be trained on what to do if they

encounter someone firing a gun. some bay area fast food workers getting ready to walk off the job in less than an hour. they'll join dozens of workers from cities nationwide demanding a pay raise. "today in the bay's" arturo santiago live in oakland where workers will soon start their strike. >> reporter: good morning. workers are about an hour away of striking at this mcdonald's in oakland. oakland is one of three cities taking part in this countrywide strike. fast food restaurants are not the only businesses are that going to be affected by this. along with mcdonald's, wendy's, burger king, macy's, sears and the dollar tree. those stores are all taking part in the strike across the country. workers started hitting the picket lines this morning at fast food restaurants on the east coast and it spread west. in all 35 cities will be taking part. the strikers want $15 an hour in wages. they want regular schedules, benefits and also the right to form a union without retail

during this one-day strike. we're live in oakland, arturo santiago, "today in the bay." >> thanks, arturo. there will be voting today on tentative voting reached with the county. seiu local 521 whose members include public safety dispatchers and health care workers are voting on the proposed deal through tonight. last week they staged a demonstration outside county headquarters, protesting their current contract they say has made it difficult to recruit and keep employees. union workers planned to go on a three-day strike next week. voting results will be available tomorrow night. no debate, the weather has been really nice. want to check the current temperatures are meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning, laura and marla. good morning at home. want to start with this live picture of the golden gate bridge where we are expecting changes over the course of the next hour or so. we'll see the fog really start to settle in. right now temperatures are in the 60s everywhere except for novato at 59 degrees. 64 in san jose, 63 to kickoff

your thursday in gilroy. a lot of people trying to get out of town for today. happy to report we don't have any flight delays at this point out of sfo. with the fog moving in, we are expecting those. we'll let you know at about 6:30. that's when they usually come in. looking good all across the nation. no delays out of any major airport. we'll check on this. every 15 minutes, a lot of people trying to get out of here. i want to give you a reference point as to where we stand. your summer days are numbered. we'll kickoff the autumnal equinox, the start of fall, 1:44 p.m. talking peak color when it comes to the leaves changing color, really pretty around here, mid october to early november. we'll probably notice that a little earlier this year as temperatures seem and all the long-range data i'm looking at to run a lot cooler as we head throughout the first part of september. it's going to get cool around here. 90 in livermore, 78 in fremont. today, tomorrow looking warm. then we'll drop like a rock over the weekend. i'll take you through that forecast.

weighing options. united nations secretary general ban ki moon is urging the president to wait on any possible military action until his team of inspectors issues their report. this is new video of that team leaving their hotel in damascus this morning. they have spent two days taking samples and interviewing survivors in the damascus suburbs where syrian activists say hundreds were killed in last week's attacks. they have not said if chemical weapons were used, but the president believes they were. "today in the bay's" danielle lee is live on capitol hill. >>. >> reporter: that is the big question. president obama says he hasn't made any official decisions just yet. that said, his administration is definitely making the case for an attack. they're saying they are certain the syrian government is responsible. they're also saying there needs to be international consequences. now, because of that he is going to be briefing members of congress, leaders in congress via teleconference today about

the secret intelligence that has led the government to come to that conclusion. that's because members of congress pushed back saying the government shouldn't do anything without their involvement. meanwhile a key ally in this, britain has decided to wait until the u.n. investigative team completes its investigation and that report. that said, today the prime minister released new documents saying he believes all the legal conditions have been met to conclude that the syrian government is responsible. the u.n. investigative team is expected to leave by saturday. so that does give us an indication of when we could start to see movement here. meanwhile the military is already in place in case they do decide to move forward with a missile attack. there is the threats of pushback. iran has said they would attack israel should the u.s. respond with an attack. they say it would be equivalent to a second vietnam. live in washington, danielle lee, back to you. >> let's hope war is not on the horizon. thanks so much. here at home protesters will take to the streets today in san

francisco to call the u.s. to not take military action against syria. they'll march on pal and market streets this evening. tonight the public will weigh in on a controversial plan to remove invasive mice from the fairlawn islands. u.s. fish and wildlife service says the only way to get rid of the mice without jeopardizing the island's ecosystem is to drop poisoned pellets from on the island from a helicopter. wildlife experts say the mice population is knocking the island's ecosystem out of balance. tonight's meeting is 6:00 at fort mason in san francisco. a veteran police dog is recovering this morning after being bitten by a man. yes, you heard that right. this cell phone video, although it's hard to make out. it shows a knife wielding man in a confrontation with sheriff's deputies in san jose monday night. at one point authorities say the man stabbed himself in the chest three times. that's when deputies released ski, the dog, to take the

suspect down. deputies say he punched, choked and bit ski whfr they were able to wrestle him to the ground. good news is the dog suffered just a couple of scraped paws and will back to work soon. the man who authorities say was on drugs at the time is recovering in the hospital. it's 5:45. union city police have a sketch of this woman who they say told a 70-year-old victim she worked for the city's pest department and needed to check her back yard for possible snake infestation. while she was in the back yard, an accomplice came in the home and stole cash and jerusalemry. the suspect is a hispanic female, mid 30s to 40s with a lip ring, nose ring and tongue piercing. >> as you make your way outside, we're looking at 60 degrees across the board. >> that neens no need for the jacket this morning. good morning to you, marla and laura.

good morning to you at home. so close to that weekend. it's friday eve. hopefully you can get outdoors this labor day weekend, temperatures will be comfortable just about everywhere. we'll get to the forecast. for today, starting out nice and mild. you may have had a little trouble sleeping if you don't have an air conditioner in your home the winds are mostly coming out of the west. that is a cool onshore flow. the ocean air traveling as far to the east as fairfield this morning. pretty breezy out there. 23 miles per hour sustained. some of the fog and low cloud cover is going to make an appearance in the north bay throughout the next couple hours. we're expecting coastal drizzle. high pressure is still going to keep us nice and warm for today and tomorrow in particular before we see that cooler weather headed our way. this is what we're looking at today. 50s and 60s at the coast. 70s and 80s inland. i'm talking about temperatures in places like santa cruz warming up to about 76 degrees

today. that is pretty comfortable if you can get out there on the warm sands of santa cruz. 81 in san jose and 83 in redwood city. meanwhile 70 degrees on the way to san francisco. you'll hit the upper 50s with all the mike climates out there in places like specifically. expecting the fog to linger over the area today. friday, saturday, sunday there is our drop-off. tuesday into wednesday staying nice and level right around average for this time of year. your drive is probably not going to be average. let's check on that with mike inouye. >> i'll be honest. i'm looking at the drizzle you're talking about for sunday over the weekend. if it rains at all, which you're not saying, that could affect the pavement drying and paint drying. that could affect the reopening of the bay bridge. we're looking like we're on time for the tuesday morning at the latest opening. probably monday evening is what we're looking at. this is coming down the eastshore freeway. there's the berkeley curve toward the bay bridge toll plaza. can't go there.

don't go there. looking at folks traveling toward 880 and 580. the reason it's slowing, even though there's no traffic flow to the bay bridge, it's like those lanes were backed up solid. there's a slowing on the maps. the same thing, the eastshore freeway itself okay until the berkeley curve, getting to the bridge and past the bridge, that's where there's congestion building. your alternate out of san francisco is heading toward the golden gate bridge. as we predicted, city streets are the issue getting toward 101 into the north bay with no delays across the richmond-san rafael bridge. a little build from 880 toward the san mateo bridge. we're looking at 84, a little heavier volume as well. specifically 92 as you get towards foster city exits. that's where we see the speeds coming down into the 50s. a live look outside and show you the traffic flow, the volume really builds here. we'll show you one more live shot for the 92 crossing, the south bay and the peninsula looking really good as well.

no problems for 101. a special tribute planned today for the danville team who died the day he was supposed to start his senior year of high school. students and staff at san ramon valley and several other nearby high schools will wear green this morning to remember 17-year-old robert orlando. tributes are also being posted on twitter as many of orlando's friends and classmates share memories of him. orlando was killed monday night when the car he was in crashed into a tree. the cause is under investigation, but officers do not suspect drugs or alcohol played a role. ready to roll. this morning getting around parts of the bay area without a car about to get a little easier. a $7 million bike sharing program official li gets rolling today. 700 bikes available to rent at 70 stations across san francisco, redwood city, palo alto, mountain view and san jose. you can pick up a bike or drop one off at any station 24 hours a day, seven days a week using an electronic code. but you do need a number ship.

5:52. ready or not, college football season officially kicks off tonight. the san jose state spartans will play sacramento state at 7:00 at spartan stadium. quarterback david fails back with the team after leading the spartans to an 11-2 record last season and military bowl win. san jose state part of the new conference, joining the mountain west conference. san jose state and its online learning partner say more kids are passing online classes. a huge turn around in grades. >> it is. san jose state launched online learning with a great deal of fanfare only to be disappointed in the results this past spring semester. the kids were getting terrible grades. the school along with udasity that provides the online classes says summer semester went much, much better. san jose state telling "the new york times" this morning in three classes, statistics, algebra and programming, the

take a look at -- on the map at noon, about 73 degrees at noon. 70 in san mateo. 64 degrees at lunchtime in san francisco. so another beautiful day there. right around 70 degrees headed our way. 90 for livermore and 81 right here in san jose. let's check on the drive see how we're doing on the roads with mike inouye. >> as you well know, the bay bridge is closed. as we've been reporting, no delays given to us. at least everything sounds like it's on schedule as they get started overnight. look at the bottom of your screen. actually over on the left, there's the bright yellow sign. that's the denny's sign over powell, that's where you lose a lane, as far back as that for westbound 80. that's why folks are starting to slow down out of berkeley through emeryville toward the berkeley curve. whether or not you care the bay bridge is closed, that's affecting your drive right now heading toward it. the map shows all the approaches, including north 880. the reroutes and changes are causing that slowing in the immediate area.
