more is dead today. ariel castro convicted kidnapper and rapist in the cleveland house of horrors was found dead overnight in an apparent suicide. he managed to hang himself in between guard checks. castro was reportedly removed from suicide watch in early june. he was transported to a nearby hospital last night and pronounced dead later. >> he was to be kept in prison until he died a natural death and the prison administration will be held accountable for his suicide. >> reporter: after keeping his victims in captivity for ten years castro took his own life one month after his sentencing. at the final court appearance he gave a rambling speech denying any wrong doing while pleading guilty to over 900 various

7:05 am
>> well, i reached out to the family and clearly they are devastated by the news. they found out about it not through the ohio department of rehabilitations and corrections but through the media and that's also how i found out about it as well as my colleague so it's very disturbing and disappointing that we received the news that way, especially in light of the fact that he has only been there for roughly 30 days. >> mr. castro had been on suicide watch at a separate jail back in june. as far as you know, was there any reason to believe he had psychological problems that would lead this jail or prison to put him on suicide watch there? >> there's no doubt that he had psychological problems and it's obvious because throughout the case -- that's what this case was about. somebody that is deeply disturbed. my colleague and i, when his last couple of days while he was in the cuyahoga county jail, we asked if we could get an

independent few reforensic evaluation of him prior to his departure to the corrections center in lorraine county and it was refused by the county and then we asked the ohio department of rehabilitations and corrections if we could get to him with our own forensic expert and they refused that as well as down in orient. so i'll be interested to hear what they have to say about how in depth and what the wide scope of the independent evaluation was they may have conducted. >> mr. castro was in protective custody. monitored at least every 30 minutes. do you have any reason to believe this morning that this was anything but a suicide? >> well, if it's anything but a suicide or it is a suicide we're going to get to the bottom of it. there's no way we're going to let this go, especially in light of the fact that it's been 30 days and he's been at orient for only, possibly two weeks. and i know his family visited him a couple of times. so i'm not sure -- i saw the news accounts this morning that
7:07 am
i know that they said that they do protective custody searches every 30 minutes of the cell but we'll find out exactly what happened. i understand that the public in general is probably going to say well good riddence but this is a human being and there is an obligation and they wouldn't dispute that that they have an obligation to make sure there's not a suicide or anything else. we pray there wasn't anything else. >> we'll learn more when that investigation is completed. thank you. savannah? >> thank you. >> we'll move on to washington where there are new developments on the obama administrations push for military action in syria. the president touched down in sweden overnight on his way to the g-20 summit in russia where syria is expected to take center stage.

it's a trip that comes amidst a turn warning from vladimir putin. peter has the details from the white house this morning. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this is from an interview with the associated press and vladimir putin warned without authorization from the united nations security counsel the u.s. attack would be a violation of international law. he did leave open a small window saying he wouldn't rule out a supported strike but said there isn't enough proof to allow one to happen right now. the president heads from sweden and his next stop is russia where he travels tomorrow for the g-20 economic summit. the president in sweden reiterated his case for action, and he said the international community cannot be silent. >> we believe very strongly with high confidence that in fact chemical weapons were used and
7:09 am
mr. assad was the source, and we want to join with the international community in an effective response that detours such use in the future. >> reporter: the president added one other important note. he said it was not he who set the red line in syria, it was the world that set the red line. >> some problems with that video right there. the president said it was the international community's credibility on the line as well as congress's credibility on the line. he reiterated his belief that congress would give confirmation for a strike.
7:10 am
the senate foreign relations committee has a draft that comes with limits, including a 90-day deadline for any u.s. strikes to take place, as well as a ban on u.s. troops on the ground. tuesday was a good day for the administration. they got support from some key leaders on both sides of the house, speaker john boehner as well as the minority leader, nancy pelosi of san francisco. there are tough questions left there, and many are asking what would happen after a strike takes place? they are wanting to reassure skeptical voters back at home. that's the latest from here, and now back to you. >> thank you. let's turn to donald rumsfeld, and he is the author of a new book.
7:11 am
>> you said the plans were a shot across the bow and limited strikes would be an embarrassment, and would it be better to do something limited or nothing at all? >> seems to me that's a false choice. either you do something that is worth doing, or you do nothing at all. the danger that is doing something that is not worth anything, seems to me, it makes the united states look like that's what we prefer, and quite the contrary, the president said repeatedly that's not what we prefer, and it seems to me the leadership lacked a vision and essence of leadership is to have a vision and clarity. that's where you develop the kind of support and unity in our country and in our congress and in the world. if there is anything that is clear, it's that they do not have that kind of unity at the present time because of the lack
7:12 am
of clarity. >> do you think it was a mistake for the president to consult congress? do you think it gave assad a gift of time? >> i think if he gets support of congress it's probably a useful thing, and he did not need to go to congress, and president after president recognize the authorities they have as commander in chief enable them to use force with reason and at some point go to the congress. >> looming over this debate time and time again has been the specter of iraq, and most recently the uk parliament, many cited the failure of intelligence leading up to iraq as a reason to why they won't take any responsibilities, and do you feel responsibility for that? >> the intelligence community
7:13 am
turned out to be wrong, and you had a brutal dictator in iraq that used chemicals against his own people and neighbors, and president bush went to the congress and got the saw port and went to the u.n. and got the support of the u.n. and fashioned a large coalition. seems to me all the appropriate steps were taken, and the democratic congress voted for a regime change in iraq. >> your book says it's easier to get into something than get out of it, and i know regime change is something to seek in theory, and does that rule apply here? >> it's true it's easier to get into something than to get out. and there are times that leadership requires that you act, and it seems to me in this instance, the instinct i have is to be supportive of the president, and to wish him well
7:14 am
if he decides to use force. i think that the presentation made by secretary kerry, who i must say has been dealt a very difficult hand, and the persuasion is forceful and persuasive. >> you mentioned iraq now, and natalie looking at a new wave of violence. >> growing concern in iraq after a sear aefz coordinated bombings that left 67 people dead on tuesday, and the attacks were the latest in a month-long surge of bloodshed, and more than 50 people killed as a result of bombings in 11 different neighborhoods in less than two hours. the scale of violence in iraq has risen to levels not seen since 2008. new developments this morning in the controversial rape case in montana.
