thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> good morning. it's 6:00. i'm marla tellez. jon and laura are up today. an update to the breaking news in san mateo where a home invasion robbery ended in gunfire. we are just learning investigators are exploring the possibility two victims who showed up to a san jose hospital may be linked to all this. police are still at that home in san mateo near the corner of lodi avenue and norfolk street just off 101 in san mateo. "today in the bay's" arturo santiago joins us from the scene. we know at this point at least one person shot. investigators say they're looking for more victims. >> reporter: actually we spoke to a san mateo police sergeant a few minutes ago. he talked about that victim, a 24-year-old man who had been shot. san mateo police are saying that the trouble started at around 11:00 last night. they came to this home on the 1500 block of lodi avenue wra they found the 24-year-old victim. he had non-life-threatening

injuries and was taken to the hospital. police say there is evidence of a gun battle. they say the home was specifically targeted but why it was targeted is not being commented on. >> we're not going to rule out abé)r'g at this point. we're still investigating this. we're going to have to interview some people to determine exactly what happened. >> reporter: police say there may be other victims, but they didn't go into any further detail. there was a report of a couple victims with gown shot wounds who walked into the regional medical center in san jose, one of those victims died. detectives from both departments are working to determine if there's a connection there. police plan on being here at the scene for several more hours as they continue to process the scene for evidence and continue with their investigation. as for suspects, the sergeant says they do have a beat on a number of suspects and they are pursuing those leads. he couldn't go into anymore detail. a press conference is scheduled for 9:00 this morning in which we hope to get even more information. live in san mateo, arturo

santiago, today in the bay. >> arturo, thanks very much. an investigation is under way in sunnyvale after officers shot and killed a man in the parking lot of a cop par restaurant. police still haven't released the name of the man who died yesterday afternoon. santa clara police along with a sheriff's department were in the middle of an undercover drug operation when there was a confrontation between the officers and a man in a white pickup truck. >> about 30 seconds later we heard what sounded like more knocking. we came out and found out it was gunshots. >> hobe's is expected to rep open this morning. no customers or workers were injured. you might remember about three months ago vice president joe biden made a surprise stop at this very same restaurant to visit with customers. it was part of a quick fund-raising trip to the bay area. happening right now, obama and leaders from 19 other countries are in spant

petersburg, russia for the g-20 summit. president obama arrived in st. petersburg overnight and will use the g-20 summit to talk about economic growth threw out the world. the president's push for a military strike against syria is certain to over shadow this event. president obama will try to win over world leaders to get their support for punishing syrian president bashar al assad. the u.s. says the assad regime used chemical weapons against its own people killing hundreds of civilians. russia and china are opposed to military intervention in syria. russian president vladimir putin says he could wind up backing a u.s. resolution for military action if there is undeniable proof that the syrian government was behind the chemical attacks. the white house says the president will not meet one-on-one with putin while he is in st. petersburg. the full senate is expected to take a vote on military action next week. just into the newsroom, pope

francis is sending blessings to the g-20 summit and giving his thoughts about the situation in syria. in a letter to vladimir putin -- and even risk bringing greater suffering to a renal john bitterly tested by strife and needful of piece. the recent bay bridge closure is causing an unexpected side effect. a doz b.a.r.t. drain cars are out of commission after moving hundreds of thousands during the bridge closure. christie smith has more on what's being done to get the training back on track. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. certainly kept the bay area moving during that five-day bay bridge closure. now the trance it agency is saying there's a price to pay for running their trains 24 hours a day which is something they don't normally do.

that is that more than a dozen rail cars are going to have to be pulled out of service for maintenance and repair, kind of like a car after a long cross country trip. b.a.r.t. provided an extra 380,000 trips during the closure. of course we know trains were certainly crowded. now that the bridge is open, b.a.r.t. is saying over the weekend it experienced double the number of failures, things like doors not opening, stuck windshield wipers, even overheating rail cars. other train systems in different cities run 24-7. but b.a.r.t. says their train is different and mechanics need to work when the trains are down. >> you see trains that have dirty. you also see stations that are dirty. you also encounter where train doors are closed. i did see where there were -- one train that came to the

embarcadero station one day and there were five cars, no train doors would open. everyone had to board from train four or five back. everything forward was broken. no excuse for that at all. >> reporter: he told us he sees it as an opportunity to hire more people to help out. here is how it stacks up. b.a.r.t. cranked out an extra 235,000 miles during the closure. that's quite a lot. b.a.r.t. mechanics believe it will take at least a week to catch up with all the work from the added service. about 7,800 more hours is what it all adds up to. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." let's check in with ms. christina loren and see what's going on weatherwise. a big heat on the way? >> big heat. we're talking near record heat, terry and marla. good morning to you. starting with a live picture. natural coolant stays on for today. this is san jose. pratt a pretty day we have in store. 79 degrees sounds pretty nice. let's take you to the bay bridge. beautiful day here. you can see little choppy on the

bay. that's courtesy of some winds that will pick up as we head throughout the day, especially through teaching hours. in the 60s to start just about everywhere. 64 in livermore, 62 in oakland, nice and mild. as you cross the bay bridge, 61 in san francisco. here is what we're working with. high pressure builds as we head throughout the weekend. that means that temperatures are going to near 100 degrees saturday, sunday and monday. going to near 100 degree on you radar right off the bat. 89 inland, bay side 79 degrees, hitting about 69 in san francisco. i'll show you where hot it's going to be in my6&y nikt repor. first, you need the ac ready to go before you hop in your car and check in with mike inouye first. >> good morning. this shot here, bottom of your screen, all these taillights crawling along. that is coming off the eastshore freeway and the berkeley curve. those are the folks off west grand avenue.

you see the slow folks going into that. the folks off west grand avenue get to merge towards the faster lanes. there have been changes to the cones. now some folks are stuck in the lanes that they normally got out of as they shifted approaching the toll plaza. there's the shift in the traffic pattern. we'll see how that shakes out over the next couple weeks. there's the backup as the metering lights are on and all cash lanes are continuing to build. a smooth drive down the eastshore freeway. no slowing except for at the merge at golden gate fields and slow toward the berkeley curve. off 880 and 580, the slowdown continues there as well. south 880, a slower build from 238 to 92. slowing from hayward toward fremont. nothing dramatic, just below the speed limit at times. over toward the peninsula, we'll give you the update. arturo continues to cover this scene, the home invasion robbery, gunfire there7agx overnight. there's police activity there closing the intersection of lodi and norfolk just south of kehoe

avenue. kehoe is open on and off the freeway. it shouldn't be the problem on and off the freeway. pacht the scene you'll get a minor reroute as they con the investigation. slowing through 101 and 92 where we typically see a slowing anyway. back to you guys. a federal court denied an appeal from a pensula high school to validate hundreds of ap test scores thrown out by the college board. students and parents at mills high school sued the college board after their ap test scores were invalidated because of seating chart violations. the students say there's no evidence anybody cheated. the u.s. district court says the college board must maintain its own integrity and stick to its policies. time right now ten after 6:00. fighting to be free of california. we'll tell you why one county is ready to be rid of the golden state for good. dark clouds gather as the tropical storm barrels toward puerto rico. we'll tell you the path it's taking and how fast wins are

from the freeways starting to back up. we'll show you where the latest slowdown is coming up. at 6:14, here are today's top stories. san mateo police are investigating a violent home invasion early this morning. police haven't released many details of what happened. they say a 24-year-old man was shot but is expected to be okay. investigators are reporting two victims shot at a south bay hospital may be linked to the shooting. b.a.r.t.'s fleet, removing extra 12 rail cars for service for maintenance. b.a.r.t. says during the closure they ran an extra 235,000 miles. president obama arrived in st. petersburg, russia, to meet with world leaders for the g-20 summit. there are a number of issues on the agenda including the conflict in syria. president obama is expected to discuss military action in syria

with other leaders during that summit. the california public utilities commission will be voting on new restrictions and requirements for ride sharing services. >> we're talking about companies like uber, side car and lift. scott, the company says they're ready for the new rules. >> they're ready because in general they were already following the rules anyway. the puc publicized those rules a few months ago. now commissioners are set to vote on them. they include requiring companies to carry $1 million worth of insurance per driver, conduct background checks and have a zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol. let's talk for a minute about uber specifically, not only is it supported financially bmsome of the most powerful people in san francisco, it just got an enormous investment from google, the biggest investment google ventures has ever made by any company. it's also attracted executives from some of the most important tech companies around. bottom line, do not

underestimate the power of uber. elon musk is going on a road trip, taking his kids with him. the world's most famous inventor tweeted out this morning he has finished plans to drive from california to new york in a model s, nearly 4,000 miles. he sapk11%q take six days and recharging will not add time to the trip. he says at 1.5 hours a day, we'll only need to charge when stopping to eat or sight see, never for charging itself. yahoo! managed to get press about the new logo this morning. a quick google search says there are 107 news articles written about it in the last 12 hours. we checked this morning at yahoo! headquarters in sunnyvale, the one and only place you won't find the new logo is on the front of the building. presumably they'll have some sort of ceremony to do it. 107 art consumicles in 12 hours.

108 now. >> there you go, including hours. tropical storm gabrielle is forming south of puerto rico. the storm is centered about 70 miles away from the country's south central coast. take a look at new video we have showing storm clouds gathering over san juan, puerto rico. tropical storm warnings are in place for puerto rico and the dominican republic. gabrielle moving northwest at about 8 miles an hour with 40-mile-per-hour maximum sustained winds. not much right now. just in, talking about the caribbean, we're getting word of a 6.0 quake in costa rica. no reports of damage or injury. 6.0, you can feel that one. >> that's sizable. getting back to gabrielle, meteorologist christina loren, first of all, welcome back. second of all, is that going to hit the u.s.? >> you know what? after it heads through puerto rico it will hook back out to sea. i have to bring to everyone's attention we're watching three areas of concern, areas that

could develop into tropical systems. that's what we're watching for. as you know, whenever you see those systems enter the gulf, it tends to make those gas prices go up. keep that in mind. it might be a good time to fill your vehicle. 59 in san francisco, 64 in livermore. as we head throughout the day today, we have two competing weather systems, high pressure to our east, low pressure to our north. as a result we're going to see the winds pick up, especially at the immediate coast as we head through the afternoon. 60s and 70s at the coast. 70s and 80s around the bay. look for the 80s and 90s in your inland spots. this is the difference between today and tomorrow. talking a 10 to 15-degree jump in some cities. enjoy what we have for you today. it's not going to last for long. this is the coolest day in the extended period. 79 degrees for san jose, 83 in santa teresa. 77 on the way to fremont and 69 in san francisco. getting into the next couple days, look at that heat. it is going to crank. we're talking about triple

digits plus, in the hottest cities across the bay, like antioch, a look at your drive with mike. 99 degrees for sunday. we start to cool you off just a little bit by monday. you're really going to see the heat break on wednesday. then we're looking much cooler. this might be your last hurrah for those summer beaches if you're looking for the 80s. mid 80s on the way to santa cruz this weekend. let's check on the drive with mike inouye. >> the temperatures keep going up every time we see them. antioch keeps slowing down. there we go for highway 4. no surprises. looking here from tullie to 880, standard build. the orange shows speeds around 50. 87, 85 not a problem just yet as the build happens. look at 280, already showing signs from downtown san jose to 880, just a little slowing because of the build. looking over here toward the peninsula, a smooth drive. let's get a quick look at 101. our live cav raj inzh palo alto. we see traffic flows smoothly

northbound. it bunches up a little bit past willow. there was an earlier bucket in the roadway. seeing a heavier volume on the southbound side as well. today we see a good flow of traffic. a lot of people on 101, no dip to the speeds just yet. this may be an early sign of congestion, san mateo down to palo alto as that is one of your hot spots for the morning commute. we'll look to the roadways again and see how things are shaping up across the san mateo bridge: approaching the earlier palo alto shot. here from 238 into hayward, that transition over as well as down in both directions between san mateo and the dumbarton bridge we see the volume build. the speeds coming down around 60 miles per hour. when you'rism patient in the morning and things feel like they're dramatically slower. 580 toward the dublin interchange, 84 shows the build. we have a slower drive into the sunol area. a new crash north of 680

it sounds like everything is out of lanes. but a distraction coming past the golf course on the fremont side. all lanes backing up all the way past west grand avenue and making the way toward the berkeley curve. off the berkeley curve, that's where you see the most severe slowing as well. hitting it as you make your bend toward the bay bridge toll plaza. >> people stim excited to see the brand new eastern span. >> it is gorgeous. the time is 6:21. coming up, the gay rights crackdown continues in russia. we'll tell you about the new build that could separate same-sex couples if their children. a northern california county has had enough of the golden state. we'll tell you which community is taking a stand to secede from california. i think we mentioned that the eastern span of the bay bridge is gorgeous. >> maybe a few times. >> and there it is. marla says take me to the bridge. there's the bridge. gorgeous morning. heat on the way. we'll have it all coming for you

is a member of the muslim brotherhood. they staged a sit-in protest in nasr city stormed by police on august 14 killing hundreds. in russia lawmakers proposing a bill denying gay parents custody of their children. the proposal comes in the wake of another bill finding people for spreading so-called homosexual propaganda to minors. the authors of that bill say the measure is aimed at protecting children and not at surprising the lbgt community. russia put several anti-gay measures in place including one that outlaws gay pride parades in moscow. as many as 13 people may have been exposed to a rare brain disease through dirty equipment. 13 people had surgery about the same time using the same rented surgical equipment. doctors say there's a small chance the patients were exposed to the disease because an abnormal protein that causes the

condition can survive standard sterilization practices. months after legalizing marijuana the state of washington is working on a plan to allow marijuana retail stores. the washington state liquor control board will vote on a proposal next month to allow up to 334 retail marijuana stores. producers and sellers would be able to apply for licenses starting in september. washington voters legalized recreational use of marijuana last november. a county in northern california wants out of the state. supervisors in sis key you county voted to secede from california and create their own state. the name of that state would be jefferson. county supervisors say they're fed up with bureaucrats in sacramento who don't consider the needs of rural counties. it needs the approval of the state and ultimately congress before it could become the 51st state. 6:26. an update to breaking news in the peninsula. a gun battle on the streets of

morning. we take you there live right now. president obama arrived in st. petersburg overnight. you see him getting off air force one here. along with the leaders of several other countries including prime minister david cameron of great britain, the president will use the g-20 summit to discuss mick growth throughout the world. his push for a military strike against syria is certain to overshadow this event. today in the bay's tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. with more on today's summit already under way as we just saw in russia. >> reporter: good morning. it just got under way. let's take you to the live pictures that we're now seeing with president putin of russia, welcoming the other leaders to the g-20 summit. this is where they're going to be discussing primarily the economy, but, of course, the issue of syria is on everyone's mind. and this morning just after he arrived in russia, president obama sat down with japan's prime minister and one of the things they talked about was their previous phone conversation in detail about

syria. the president is pushing for military action. part of the reason that he's here, that he's there in russia today is to get more support from the international community. back here congress is debating whether or not they're going to authorize military action. no one here seems to want to go it alone. the president wants congress behind him and he wants other countries behind him as well. he's going to be sitting down with the president of france and others to try to get that backing. it is not officially on the agenda. they're going to be talking about the economy. one of the big issues there is the fact that the big countries, while they're improving compared to five years ago when they first met, the smaller countries are now having economic problems and financial crises. that's something the g-20 wants to address this week. marla? >> certain to be busy there. thanks so much. also threatening to over shadow the summit is russia's decision to grant asylum to confessed nsa leaker edward snowden. that decision already prompted

president obama to cancer a planned meeting inysg moscow w russia's president vladimir putin. today marks the first time obama has been in the first country since snowden fled to russia. he's wanteded for leaking classified intelligence information to newspapers. in san francisco it could soon be illegal for law enforcement to detain someone solely based on the basis of their immigration status. the author of the pros al says the current situation in the city has created a, quote, drag net that is wrongfully sweeping up innocent people. police chief greg suhr says he wants convictedúá0 felons, sex offenders and those with prior weapons offenses exempt from the law. good morning to you. we welcome back meteorologist christina loren, a sight for sore eyes on this friday eve. you're dofed in fog.

>> i am. i wanted to bring you to one of the only places, marla and terry, where we're finding the fog. that's at the immediate coast. our beautiful golden gate bridge, you can see some seagulls out there. we have a really good looking day shaping up. enough fog to force flight delays at sfo, about 1:15. temperatures in san francisco are pretty comfortable to kickoff a friday eve, thursday morning. 59 in san jose and 54 degrees in gilroy. so as we head throughout the next couple days, the heat is really going to crank. starting tomorrow we're talking about a ten-degree jump. saturday and sunday look to be the hottest. just want to give you a little indication of where we're headed. near triple digits. napa will hit 94, palo alto 91st. san francisco, you're going to be spoiled at 75 degrees. just to put things in perspective, in livermore, 99 degrees rivals an old record of

110 degrees. not getting very close there. but i think we will actually break records in places like concord where the record is just 101 degrees. it will be that hot as we get into the upcoming weekend. that means you want to enjoy today, 86 inland, bay side 79, at the coast 69 degrees. whenever we get these downsloping winds, temperatures can crank. it's possible to get into the 110-degree range, potentially one for the record books. always breaking records in the traffic department but not with his speed, here is mike inouye, ladies and gentlemen. >> you're right. i'm not the quickest guy. looking over here, this is not the quickest commute either. slower speeds, rush hour here as you look around north 101. this is the slowest most dramatic slowing we see in the south bay. it's starting to build from capital expressway past tullie. an earlier crash should be over on the shoulder north of 880.

87 is slow coming into downtown, again, 17 and 85 starting to show the build for the volume. north 680 from fremont into sunol, we see more slowing. a four-car crash reported in the center divide. with all that distraction, there was slowing. the southbound side starts to see the slowing. sometimes the issues on the other side of the divider are more of a distraction for the southbound drive through sunol. we see slowing out of pleasanton. into the 50s at their very worst. 84 and 580 show the typical tri-valley build as well. as we look farther north, the build for 680 out of pleasant hill, a smooth flow for#i?242 through the interchange. a live look shows you across the san mateo bridge, a steady volume, slowing on the hayward ] side, typical toward the toll plaza. off the high-rise in foster city, a smooth flow, a lot of company. no reason to be lonely this morning. highway 92 is popular. >> even dating advice from mike.

it is 6:39. threatens the busy of a intersection all caught on camera. >> you can see a huge plume of black smoke. this happened in colorado sprichx yesterday afternoon. police say the car which was carrying oxygen tanks in the trunk exploded after being rear-ended by another car. the driver was able to escape but did suffer broken vertebrae. police arrested the driver of the car that actually caused the crash for driving drunk. >> scary seeing the school bus across the intersection. a pileup of massive proportions. more than 100 cars, trucks and suvs collided in a chain reaction crash in england. dozens hurt, some seriously. fire crews needed to rescue several people trapped inside their cars. what a mess. the initial cause of the pileup under investigation. but authorities suspect thick fog to blame.

breaking news overnight in san mateo where a home invasion robbery ended in gunfire. we're just learning investigators are exploring the possibility two victims who showed up to a san jose hospital may be linked to this. police still at the home at the corner of lodi avenue and norfolk street off highway 101 in san mateo. "today in the bay's" arturo santiago joins us from the scene. we know at least one person shot. investigators think there may be more? >> reporter: that's right. we spoke with a police sergeant. they received reports of gunfire at around 11:00 last night on the 1500 block of lodi avenue. when officers arrived on the

scene there was a 24-year-old man in the street who had been shot. he was taken to the hospital with what were considered to be flon life-threatening injuries. police say there might be other victims but didn't elaborate on that. there is evidence of a gun battle inside the home. it seems this was not random shooting. the home appears to have been targeted. police are not saying just yet why. overnight two victims with gunshot wounds showed up at san jose medical center. one of them died. police are trying to determine if the victims are connected to the exchange of gunfire here in san mateo. >> -- also aware there were two gunshot victims that walked into a hospital or appeared at a hospital in san jose. obviously there's gunshot victims in san jose, they're trying to figure out what happened. we have a -- what's clearly a gun battle here in san mateo. our detectives are exploring the possibility, trying to understand whether or not those two things are related.

investigation. it is 6:15. investigation is under way this morning in sunnyvale after officers shot and killed a man in the parking lot of a popular restaurant. police have still not released the name of the man who died after being shot in the parking lot of hobe's restaurant around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. santa clara police, along with the sheriff's department were in the middle of an undercover drug operation when there was a confrontation between officers and a man inside a white pickup truck. it's still unclear why officers decided to shoot. we still don't know which agency the shots were fired from. we know no sunnyvale officers were involved in the shooting. the restaurant is expected to reopen this morning. no customers or workers were hurt. a san jose family is searching for answers after the sudden death of their mother. police say they have now arrested someone in connection with the death of reyna figueroa. her body was found in a car in

east san jose tuesday afternoon. police have not released the suspect's name or motive. they say the two did know each other. figueroa worked at a school yard supervisor at an elementary school near her home. san francisco police have arrested two more in the death of a san jose nursing student. the three men face homicide and gang enhancement charges. police say the three were involved in a gang-related shootout last month near third and san salvador. 19-year-old kimberly chico was in a nearby car when she was hit by a stray bullet. bay area police would love for you to take a good look at this. new images of the prime suspect in what police are calling a snake scam that's hit a number of bay area cities. police say this woman poses as an animal control officer and tells homeowners to go in their back yard while she looks around for snakes. when they go in the back yard, her police case it is house. police say she's hit houses in belmont, burlingame, san mateo

and' free-throw month. safe way has agreed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for air pollution. the environmental protection agency claims safe way violated the clean air act by failing to properly clean coolant. safeway agreed do reduce the coolant leaks and pay adds 600,000 fine. b.a.r.t. maintenance crews are scrambling to get a dozen train cars back on track this morning. the cars became worn down after moving hundreds of thousands of riders during the recent bay bridge closure. "today in the bay's" christie smith at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station with more details on the work being done. >> reporter: good morning, terry. b.a.r.t. was certainly the go-to service during the bay bridge closure, kept the bay area moving 24 hours a day. now b.a.r.t. is saying there is a price to pay for pushing their trains to run around the clock, something they normally don't do. the trains were packed with

riders during that closure. now at least a dozen rail cars are being yanked from service for maintenance. problems doubled over the weekend, things like doors not opening, overheating, even plain old stuck windshield wipers. for b.a.r.t. it kind of underscores why they don't normally run 24 hours day. crews need to work on the trains when the system is down, between midnight and 4:00 a.m. other agencies have multiple train tracks. they can work on one set and work on the other. they can run 24-7. b.a.r.t. apparently has to power down the third rail for safety to work on it. one regular rider this morning, he sees this whole issue a little differently. >> you do see them occasionally. i don't think it should be a major problem. i think they should be prepared to run 24 hours a day as opposed to running the schedule that they do run. other major cities like new york city, they run their trains 24 hours a day and they don't have the maintenance issues that b.a.r.t. is complaining about as

of now. so if that is their problem, get more people on board, fix the trains. >> reporter: so here is how it stacks up. about 235,000 extra miles. that's what b.a.r.t. did over those five days. one mechanic thinks that it will take about a week to catch up, that this comes to about 7,800 extra car hours. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:55. the cpuc is considering cracking down on popular app-based ride based services like uber, lift and side car. today the commission is expected to vote on proposed regulations that would apply to any company using the internet to connect riders with non-commercial drivers. under the proposal drivers would have to undergo background checks and a driver training program. there also would be a zero tolerance drug and alcohol policy and a strict insurance policy. the cpuc says the regulations are designed to keep riders

safe. that vote comes just one day after the nfl players association announced it is teaming up with san francisco-based uber to help players get around safely. every active nfl player is going to get a personalized key chain with $200 in ride credits on it. they'll be able to use the service to get a ride in 20 cities across the u.s. uber says it hopes the partnership will keep the players on the field and out of trouble often caused by drinking and driver. >> cars are flying off the lots. >> scott mcgrew, detroit having the best month in many a year. toyota also up 23%. best car sales for all companies since before the recession. best-selling car, by the way, actually a truck. the ford f series. last month an f series truck was sold every 37 seconds. wall street looking at that. also looking at data showing fewer lay-offs. first-time jobless claims hit new lows.
