good monday morning. coming up on "early today" -- full court press. president obama will be unleashing a media blitz to promote his syria agenda with half the undecided house to convince. there's a diary from robert f. kennedy. does it reveal his sexploits over the past many years? football fans rejoice brings plenty of highs and lows. plus, even a pesky wind couldn't blow serena williams. micky hart taps into his grateful dead brain. and what to do with a used smartphone? i'm betty nguyen. all eyes on congress as they return to a hard sell of military intervention. president obama is gearing up for the sixth network interviews that he is going to be taping this afternoon. very busy man all part of his full-court press strategy and ahead of the nationwide address tomorrow night. a new moveon.org commercial is urging congress to reject the proposal and it's apparently how congress is leaning right now as it returns today from a five-week recess. in the house, 227 are against military action or leaning towards a no vote. 25 are for military action. 181 still undecided. now, in the senate 27 are against it or leaning no. 23 are in favor, with 50 undecided. we have team coverage with nbc's tracie potts in washington and nbc's jim maceda in turkey. we begin with tracie. lawmakers facing a momentous vote there in washington. what do you know about that. >> reporter: that process starts this afternoon, betty, good morning, everyone. that's why the obama administration's making the hard

sell. lawmakers have got to figure out where is the u.s. more vulnerable here. getting involved in the civil war and maybe encouraging iran or al qaeda or making a promise for action and then doing nothing. with protests across the country, president obama is pushing for it at a dinner with republicans last night. and in a nationwide television appearance tomorrow. especially in the house where lawmakers seem reluctant to antagonize bashar al assad. >> i think there's a chance that he is more emboldened if we do attack him. >> reporter: the white house is using these videos not confirmed by nbc as proof the assad regime used chemical weapons. >> nobody is rebutting the intelligence but i would say the evidence is not as strong as the public statements that the

president and his administration has been making. >> reporter: assad in an interview with cbs says there is no evidence. the white house responds "it doesn't surprise us that someone who would kill hundreds of children with poison gas would also lie about it." they're kerred limited strikes could turn into more. >> once we hit, it is a war. >> reporter: the senate could vote this week. but the administration has yet to say if the president may order those air strikes anyway if congress votes no. betty. >> all right, tracie, thank you. former secretary of state hillary clinton is expected to talk about syria at the white house today. a clinton aide tells the ap she plans to reiterate her support of the president's efforts to pass the serious resolutions. well, turning now overseas to intense diplomacy amid the international call for action in syria, secretary of state john kerry held a news conference this morning with british foreign secretary william hague. it caps a weekend spent lobbying

partners. among them only france has publicly called for air strikes. kerry says saudi backs them but the saudis have stopped short of backing they will publicly. israeli official tells they would know hours before a u.s. strike. the country fears damascus could fire missiles at them in retaliation. pope francis made a plea before yesterday during a a global day of prayer and fasting in the middle east in the world. we have team coverage with nbc's jim maceda live there in turkey. what was secretary kerry able to accomplish? >> reporter: hi, veronica, it was indeed a u.s. diplomatic offensive which forged ahead in paris and london. secretary kerry said he did make progress drumming up support

among arab nations. as expected saudi arabia and qatar which both supply weapons and financing to the rebels blamed assad's regime for the alleged sarin gas attack outside damascus and both supported a strong response but as you alluded to like the europeans they fell short of specifically calling for military action against syria. there are believed to be about a dozen nations supporting limited air strikes and just yesterday, turkey where we are said publicly that it would join the fight. meanwhile, tensions in the region are on the rise after assad again threatened retaliation if attacked here in turkey and iraq, thousands of troops and tanks reinforce their borders with syria. jordan is on a heightened state of alert and the u.s. embassy in lebanon has pulled all n nonessential staff and families out of that country. so all bracing for war. betty, back to you. >> jim, thank you so much joining us live from turkey. medical teams rushed to a

connecticut state fair after a swing ride lost power injuring 12 children. a mechanical failure caused the 12 children and 1 adult to crash into each other and tumble on to the ground. an 8-year-old boy was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. from one accident to another, for the second time in a month, a fan has died after falling at a professional sports stadium. it happened outside san francisco's candlestick park before kickoff between the 49ers and green bay packers. the victim believed to be in his 30s was walking on an elevated pedestrian walkway when he fell onto the sidewalk below. they performed first aid but he was declared dead at the scene. witnesses say he appeared to be intoxicated. all right. switching gears now, "the new york post" says it has on its hands juicy information about the kennedys dealing with ryan

roberts jr., to be specific. the nephew of the former president. this morning, "the post" says it obtained a log of kennedy's numerous extramarital affairs. the journal from 2001 details daily activities but the nearly 400 pages also include names and some -- of some 37 mistresses. next to them are numbers reportedly corresponding to sexual acts. when "the post" reached out to the kennedys for a comment, well, he denied any such book existed. dozens of homes in northern california have been threatened by a new brush fire that is only 15% contained. about 200 firefighters currently fighting that blaze. that is continuing to grow. the town of clayton is under evacuation orders as 50 to 75 homes in that area are threatened. nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with a look at that. they need to get everything there -- one fire after another. >> they need a rainy season. it started around 1:00 p.m. yesterday and by 7:00 p.m. it

had quickly spread and went right up the east side of mt. elle diablo and burning in elle diablo state park to the south of the clayton area. forecast, 85. north winds, 5 to 10, still dry. shouldn't be that windy but the bone dry conditions and low humidity won't help the firefighters. no rain in the forecast for this region. only 15 to 20 miles away from downtown san francisco. by the way the crow flies but definitely no help on the weather whatsoever. all the rainy weather has been stuck in areas of arizona with more humid and cloudy conditions but none of that will move through central and northern california. high pressure providing very warm conditions for that region and it's going to be 95 today in medford and 84 in boise and, you know, just the cooler spots are actually in the deserts with the clouds and

the latest in sport, i don't know about you but i'm a die-hard cowboys fan and i was loving sunday night on the first play, giants quarterback eli manning was intercepted on a screen pass. there that goes. the cowboys' tony romo connected with jason witten for two touchdowns and manning hit convict to cruz for three tds but dallas, you got to check this out. they intercepted manning on another screen pass. that was big blue's sixth

turnover. the cowboys pull out the opener, 36-31. san francisco's colin kaepernick was 27 of 39 for 412 yards and three touchdowns and anquan boldin was his prime target catching 13 passes for 208 yards and one touchdown. san fran took a 34-28 victory over green bay. new orleans welcomed back coach sean payton with a strong performance against atlanta. saints quarterback drew brees had two tds and knocked off the falcons. on the nfl scoreboard a big upset for the new york jets on a field goal with just two seconds left for an 18-17 squeaker over tampa bay. also, the titans went to pittsburgh and stunned the lifeless steelers, 16-9. college football rankings, they are out, alabama still numero uno but my texas longhorns and usc dropped out. oregon, number two and clemson moved up to number three.

not often i can pick the west out and say the hottest was medford at 93. the desert areas had some clouds and some rainy type weather over the weekend so temperatures were kept down a little. the same thing will be true today. the weather pattern hasn't changed throughout much of the west. more clues and moisture from phoenix to vegas, flagstaff, tucson northward. medford could be one of the hottest spots out there at 95. tuesday, betty, look at portland and oregon up to 91 and those 90-degree days are numbered. if you like the heat, you know, tomorrow may be one of the last ones for you. >> where do you see that ever? >> doesn't happen often. >> thank you, bill. well, vin diesel muscled his way into the top spot at the movies this weekend. leading the news in australia this morning, thai airways tries a logo cover-up as it skids off the runway. 14 were hurt last night in bangkok. an official said the logos were blackened out as a part to protect the airline's image. and in "the guardian" uruguayan found alive after four months lost in the andes. eating he survived the brutal mountain winter by eating sugar, raisins and rats. well, topping our news, syria takes top billing as congress returns today from a five-week recess and already on day one, a house briefing right now the house is largely against or undecided on military intervention in syria. 227 are against it or leaning towards a no vote.
