crazy. i mean, that it's so close to our home. >> dozens of homes now, the home understand der evacuation as orders and the orders are in place as a fire on mt. diablo grows. good morning. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. that fire broke out on the eastern side of the mountain near clayton yesterday and we just got off the phone with cal fire who tells us the fire is 1500 acres and it is growing. the weather and steep terrain making it difficult for firefighters. they issued new evacuation orders. >> christie smith is live in clayton. many are trying to seek refuge

as the fires burn close to the homes. what can you tell us out there? >> reporter: well, i can tell you we just arrived at the library on clayton road, the evacuation is up and running. i spoke with the red cross and they tell me they have one couple that arrived in their car, trying to sleep it off with their dogs. they are ready for more people to come in and help. they think a lot of the people who did evacuate are probably staying with family and friends. from where i'm sitting i can see smoke and orange glo going on up in the hills. the fire burned about 1500 acres. because of the hazard, evacuations were ordered to include trail ride road, east trail, upper trail, and lower trail road. there are 24 homes in that area. fire was reported yesterday off of morgan territory road and triggered evacuations along oak hill lane and curry canyon.

we spoke with residents, they saw the fires creeping toward their home, very scary. a chopper up above dropped water on the flames. very dry brush, we spoke with one man. his wife was terrified on the home, not sure whether to leave or no. some hosed their roofs, trying to do anything to keep their home safe. at this point, again, evacuation center fairly empty. the red cross says they are ready to take in any one who needs help. i'll send it back to you. >> christie, thank you. >> for a look at the weather conditions that firefighters will face let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. the weather definitely not going to be an asset when it comes to fighting that fire. we have low humidity, one of the hottest days of the entire year is expected today. we're starting out in the east bay with temperatures at 68

degrees this morning in livermore. what i can tell you relative humidities are typically at their highest in the early morning hours. relative humidity is a product of temperature and moisture, as we head throughout day we expect the numbers to fall into the teens potentially so when it comes to the brush fire this is what we expect. 90 degree, wind out of the northwest, dry north wind, 10 to 20 miles per hour, picking up throughout the day. and humidity at 20%. potentially dropping down to 15% later on this evening. so we'll watch this closely. also we could be breaking temperature records here in the bay area. i'll show you where when this heat will break but for now back to you, john and laura. >> and for up to the minute information on the fire, head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. we'll have updates throughout the newscast and during the "today" show. >> three homicides in three days, a violent weekend in san jose. police are left looking for answers. yesterday morning they received

a call of a man in distress in his car near spartan stadium. paramedics were unable to save him. police say there are signs of foul play. so far no arrests have been made. on saturday, a woman was stabbed to death in her home near the intersection of east capital expressway on center road. police do now have a suspect in custody. before that on friday, a man was shot and killed in front of his home in the neighborhood. that man's family said his son shot him. there are 37 homicides in san jose so far this year. >> san francisco general hospital released a photo of a severely injured man in hopes someone will recognize him. a warning, some viewers made find this picture disturbing. hospital officials say this man was found lying unconscious and critically injured saturday morning in union square. he had no wallet or i.d., only a

house key. the man is between 30 and 40 years old, 5'10", 165 pounds. anyone with information is asked to call the san francisco sheriff's office. police now investigating the death of a man at candle sticks park during the 49ers game. that man died when he fell from an upper walkway leading to the stadium. witnesses telling police the man at the time looked like he was drunk when he fell. off-duty medics reportedly gave first aid but the man died before he could be taken to the hospital. police say they are in the process of notifying the man's family before releasing his identity. a grass fire caused road closures. the fire destroyed five buildings and damaging power lines. 121 was closed about 3 miles south of sonoma. the fire is out but the roads are back open. the cause of the fire is under investigation. today, a somber one in san

bruno as residents mark the third anniversary of a deadly explosion. a small memorial service being planned in the crestmore neighborhood. nearly half of the 38 destroyed homes have been rebuilt. still, more than a dozen lots remain empty. on september 9th, 2010, a gas pipeline owned by pg&e exploded creating that fire ball that killed eight people. san bruno's mayor pressing the state to hit pg&e with a $4 billion fine. police say it reached a $70 million settlement with the city and is working to improve pipeline safety. >> b.a.r.t. will return to the table with its union. in the meantime, each side has accused the other of holding up talks. b.a.r.t.'s union says b.a.r.t. management is trying to delay negotiations and provoke a strike. management says the union has

not responded to its last offer. the 60-day cooling off period ends in one month. if the deal is not worked out by then, b.a.r.t. workers could once again walk off the job. law enforcement agencies in the south bay spending this week focusing on school safety. operation safe passage will be in effect today through friday in all school zones in santa clara county. officers beefing up presence around the schools all week long. they are there to enforce traffic safety rules. the goal is remind parents, commuters and students walking or riding their bikes to school to be very aware of their surroundings and stay safe in school zones. >> let's look at the forecast this morning. good morning again, christina. >> hey, good morning to you, laura. temperatures are pretty mild out there to start. we're at 68 degrees, for example, in livermore, 63 in san jose. we have the upper 50s at the

coast. that's the only place we're getting that natural cooling. there is patchy fog in san francisco. you might have to use your wipers from san francisco up into marin county. i want to take you into the future stuff. at noon today, look at how hot it's going to be in livermore, straight up 90 degrees at lunch time. 89 in san jose. 4 to 5 additional hours of warming to go. that means we're in triple-digit territory. 92 in san jose, 78 degrees in san francisco. even getting hot in oakland at 87 degrees. so it's going to be very hot and it's a dry heat we're expecting with humidity levels in the teens. we'll tell you what that means for morgan fire. we gave nike day off. let's check on the morning drive. >> slaughter in the house. that's right. not slaughterhouse, just to make things clear. we're talking about good news, lots of green on the map.

we're not looking at heavy congestion. i want to zoom into the area where the mt. diablo fire is, the morgan fire, you can see the winds this morning are more of a northwesterly component. it's not blowing over 680. folks probably trying to get a look at that even from 880 i was driving, we could see it. the smoke in the air. lots of folks probably going to notice as they head down to san ramon. no major accidents to report this morning. >> thank you very much, anthony. drivers are hoping week two with the new san jose bridge will bring more speed. during the first week there was a lot of traffic. gawkers brought speeds to 30 miles per hour. the chp reminding drivers it's illegal to take photos while driving. >> gawkers. >> it's also illegal to pull over on the side of the bridge unless you have an emergency. lots are trying to take video.

i've seen a view posted on facebook, in fact. a proposal to rename the western span of the bay bridge after former san francisco mayor willie brown could win approval as soon as today. resolution is set to come up for final vote in the state senate. it's been approved by the assembly. the renaming has been met with plenty of opposition from local leaders who claim that it violates the senate policy against naming roadways after people who are still living. alive and well. >> yes. we confirm that. looking for big willie style. 4:40. first richmond, now another bay area city trying to help underwater homeowners buy back mortgages. >> the study that finds the federal government is wrong when it comes to young women needing mammograms. >> plus, back in session, the full congress returning today. and the first item on the agenda is syria. the latest developments out of washington, next.

situation in syria. speaking at a news conference in london kerry insisted the united states knows syrian president bashar al assad used chemical weapons against civilians. he also made the case for international military response against syria. >> and the world needs to focus on it, pay attention to it or we give license to other dictators or other groups in other parts of the world to engage in similar behavior and just make things worse for everybody. >> kerry said ultimately the solution to the conflict in syria lies in political negotiations, but he stressed the need for military response to show other nations will not tolerate use of chemical weapons. >> congress returning to washington today after a five-week summer recess. of course, syria at the top of that agenda. president obama now pushing for congressional approval to launch airstrikes against syria in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the syrian

luke warm job reports. tensions escalating in syria, oil prices have been pushing up. crude oil trading above $110 a barrel this morning. s investors get data on consumer credit and retail sales and inflation. the dow slipping to 14,923, the nasdaq edged up one, 3660. president obama is reportedly considering whether to nominate top treasury official to fill a vacant seat on the federal reserve, amid criticism to a lack of women. one of the most visible members of the president's economic team. and a private investment group is reportedly in talks to buy neiman-marcus for about $6 billion. the deal could be announced as soon as this week. it's filed for an ipo to go

tere teresa. as we head throughout day a hot one, tomorrow not as hot, and then the heat breaks wednesday into thursday. seasonal averages this weekend. still feeling like summer. the first official day of fall just around the corner as well, september 22nd. so we're getting close to that date. but it's still feeling summerlike across the bay area. we'll take a closer look at the conditions firefighters are up against when it comes to the morgan fire over mt. diablo. i'm going to send it back to you. >> thank you very much. a new study calling into question the federal government's recommendation for mammograms. research at harvard medical school studying more than 600 women who died from breast cancer, they find more than half were under the age of 50 when they died. researchers seem to think breast cancer is more aggressive when it strikes young women and less severe in women over 70. they found two thirds of the women who died did receive a

mammogram. the current government recommendation limits mammograms to women ages 50 to 74. >> medical helicopters heading to stanford hospital will start landing in a new temporary location today. the emergency helicopters will be relocated to a temporary helipad on practice soccer fields. an ambulance will meet there and then transport the patients to the emergency room. the pad on top of the hospital is closed while crews work on elevation. the work is expected to be finished by november. >> palo alto's main library could also be getting a new name. the city council thinking about renaming the library rin canata. that word is spanish for elbow or inside corner. the commission recommending the name because the building actually sits adjacent to a large park and a fire station a. public committee on the renaming will be held at palo alto's city

of olympic history will be present at the 2020 games. international olympic committee voted to return wrestling to the summer olympics in tokyo. seven months ago when the ioc cut wrestling, they tried to draw a more diverse crowd. wrestling was restored to the games over the weekend. local wrestling coaches say wrestling depends on the olympic program since there is no pro version of it in america. wrestling beat out squash and baseball and softball to make it into those games. >> of course the other big news, japan getting the 2020 games. that will be fun to watch. 4:55. let's check the traffic. >> good morning. not much happening. still early so traffic is very light and it's a monday, so make sure you got a little extra coffee in that cup. because it is a slow go especially across the bridges this morning where we have a little fog but you can see the san mateo bridge and that's good news, you can see the bridge,

evacuation center while meteorologist christina loren is tracking the weather conditions. >> bob redell is live at the staging area for firefighters. bob, you're on scene. what are you seeing, hearing? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, jon, laura. right now we're in clayton looking south at mt. diablo. you can see the fire continues to burn giving off that glow in this early morning dark sky. it is now burning up at the peak of mt. diablo where the old lookout building and beacon light are. we spoke with cal fire, they tell us they do not think the fire will damage or destroy that structure because there's a pretty big parking lot that separates it from the wildlands and they have enough resources to protect. the fire did grow overnight, almost doubled in size. yesterday the fire had burned 800 acres, right now it's at 1,500. still threatening 100 homes. it's
