evacuation center while meteorologist christina loren is tracking the weather conditions. >> bob redell is live at the staging area for firefighters. bob, you're on scene. what are you seeing, hearing? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, jon, laura. right now we're in clayton looking south at mt. diablo. you can see the fire continues to burn giving off that glow in this early morning dark sky. it is now burning up at the peak of mt. diablo where the old lookout building and beacon light are. we spoke with cal fire, they tell us they do not think the fire will damage or destroy that structure because there's a pretty big parking lot that separates it from the wildlands and they have enough resources to protect. the fire did grow overnight, almost doubled in size. yesterday the fire had burned 800 acres, right now it's at 1,500. still threatening 100 homes. it's only 10% contained.

there are 300 firefighters on the scene. i spoke with the battalion chief. they ordered a lot more resources, as many as 300 more firefighters expected to come in as well as more engines, dozers and at 8:00 they will have more aircraft to dump water and retardant. they hope to have containment in a couple days. they have a good eight miles of fire lines to put down. what makes this fire so difficult as you were alluding to it's on a mountain, steep terrain and dry brush. they do not expect this to be the rim fire. they hope to have containment in a couple of days. they do not know what caused this to start. just after 1:00 yesterday afternoon. reporting live in clayton, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> trouble for the firefighters so for an update let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> good morning to you, jon and

laura. good morning to you at home. not great news from the weather department. we're starting out mild, 67 degrees, for example, in places like livermore, the east bay. gets to be the hottest across the bay aefrmt look what else we expect. i want to show you your future wind. we expect gusty conditions to start to pick up as we head throughout this afternoon. typically we see a nice ocean breeze off the pacific moving into the inland cities. today it's the opposite, dry northerly winds, as a result wherever you see the warm colors, that's where the winds will be the strongest and will pick up throughout the day. i stopped that clock at 4:00 p.m., typically the hottest time of the day this time of year, that's when we expect the 90s in addition to reduced humidity. we're talking 19%, wind out of the northwest, 10 to 20 miles per hour, gusting at times to about 35 miles per hour. what i can tell you is we are expecting some improvement as we head through the next couple days temperatures will drop off, we'll see the westerly flow

return. today not great for the firefighters in the area. back to you. >> that makes it all the tougher. thank you. 5:02. the fire also forcing a lot of people to move out. not sure what's going to happen. >> christie smith is live in clayton with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i've been speaking with the red cross. there is one couple here at the clayton community library. they have a shelter set up inside. the couple choosing to stay in their car because they brought their dogs. i want to step aside so you can see the view. that is the top of mt. diablo. that's what people are seeing this morning, a lot of the red cross workers taking pictures. now and then you see this really flare up and the orange glow on the ridge. the red cross says they are ready to help anyone who shows up. most people, though, who left, are probably staying with family and friends. because of the threat to their homes evacuations have been ordered now for trail, ridge

road, wrestleman park road, east trail, upper trail and lower trail. there are 24 homes in that area. that have been evacuated in addition to the ones evacuated earlier at oak hill lane and curry canyon area. 50 to 75 structures threatened. some telling us they have so much land near their homes that they are afraid if the dry brush goes up in flames that they could lose their home. we spoke with one man who says he wasn't home but his wife was. >> she was nervous, on the phone, she was scared. yeah. definitely. talking to her on the phone i told her not to panic and i could feel panic in her voice. >> reporter: again, the red cross saying they are here, they have cots set up inside ready to go. i wanted to show you, again, when people pull in this is what they see. and again, red cross workers out here taking pictures, keeping an eye on things. now and then that orange glow

gets brighter. crossing fingers that things calm down a little. but that's the situation from here. reporting live in clayton, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. make sure to stay with "today in the bay" all morning long. we'll be continuing to cover and update you on the fire burning out of control there in the east bay including the latest from firefighters. and of course as always get the latest information on our website, nbcbayarea.com. 5:05, breaking news in the east bay. firefighters are battling a two-alarm house fire. it's happening on farwell drive. we understand two people have been rescued from the home. it's unclear if they have been transported to the hospital. we have a crew on the way to the scene. >> three homicides in three days, very violent weekend in san jose as police now looking for answers, any kind of answers. sjpd says yesterday morning to be specific they received a call

of a man in des tress in his car. they were unable to save him. police say there are signs of foul play. but so far no arrests have been made. >> on saturday, a woman was stabbed to death in her home near the intersection of east capital expressway and center road. police do now have a suspect in custody on that one. and before that, on friday, a man was shot and killed in front of his home in the barry es sent neighborhood. the family says his son is the one who shot him. we can tell you for the record there have been a total of 37 homicides so far this year in san jose. police in berkeley this morning investigating the city's fourth homicide of the year, just last night a man was gunned down along 8th street. police found him lying on the street suffering from several gunshot wounds. he was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. so far in this case, no arrests

have been made. >> 5:06. firefighters in mountain view trying to figure out what caused a fire that gutted one home and seriously damaged another. it happened saturday night on orangetree lane in mountain view. crews say one home caught fire with four people inside. they were all able to escape safely. the flames eventually made it to don and joni's house, causing significant damage. they say they are grateful it wasn't worse. >> pretty bad but the home next door is destroyed but ours is a lot of water damage and insulation is in the house and water. but we'll take each day and see how we do and find a place to live. we'll be okay. >> the dinsmore weren't home when the fire started and found out through text messages. no one was hurt. >> politician george shirakawa jr. could find himself back in court soon. the "mercury news" reporting new

court documents show prosecutors think that shirakawa should be held accountable for allegedly mailing illegal campaign flyers that discredited a political rival of an associate. shirakawa's attorneys, they argue the charges should be included in a plea deal made back in march and should be dismissed. prosecutors also say the new charges did not come to light until after the plea deal was made. a judge now expected to decide this month if the charges will in fact be dismissed. >> it's 5:08. we expect a warm day today. want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> welcome back to both of you. 67 degrees in livermore to start out monday. that's an indication of a pretty hot day ahead when you're starting out in the 60s, even right here in san jose. may have had trouble getting to sleep last night. we're at 56 degrees in san francisco, 57 to kick off a monday in san mateo. so it all works like this today. stop the clock on futurecast at

high noon when temperatures are already going to be in mid-90s in antioch, concord and livermore at 90 degrees. and 89 degrees as you break for lunch in san jose. rounding out the day with highs at about 4:00 p.m. this time of year at 102 degrees for livermore, 103 in fairfield, 98 in concord, 92 degrees, a hot day ahead in san jose. in gilroy, they will likely hid close to triple digits again today at 98 degrees. coming up we do have some heat relief in the near future. we'll see the cool ocean air return. i'll get to that in my seven-day forecast in the next report. first, get ready to go to work, anthony slaughter is here to let you know what could slow you down. >> we're looking at fog on the golden gate bridge. as you travel from the north bay into san francisco, even though you're talking about how hot it is, we still have the micro climates in full effect at the golden gate bridge. you'll notice a little haze and some foggy conditions down to

that are threatened. christie smith is at evacuation centers. a loot going on. 5:13. also in world news iran's entire cabinet opened facebook pages even though the site is banned in that country. all 15 ministers and the new president have joined the social networking site. it's viewed as a move toward greater internet freedom in that country. many iranians set up proxy service to access facebook and other banned sites. >> speaking of facebook this morning some changes in place here. it wants to be quoted the way twitter is. we see twitter quotes. >> we do it. i might say president obama tweeted this or that. we don't, though, generally talk about what people 50 to facebook because facebook is more closed off. facebook is changing that a little. opening what you post publicly to certain news agencies

including buzz feeds and the "today" show in hopes that hoda and kathie lee will quos facebook. shares look like they cross back into record territory again. friday hitting 44.61 before settling back under 44. you'll also recall friday we got the august jobs numbers with if you'll allow, not so agust. 169,000 jobs enough to keep us about even. many kids entered the work force, about that many, as adults each month. they turn 18 so that number is sort of a wash. let's look ahead to day trading. kay la tauschy is live. good morning kayla. >> good morning, scott looks good so far, futures are higher as the markets come off a positive week, the dow snapping its losing streak. it turned in its best weekly performance in nearly two months, bond yields reaching levels not seen in two years -- oil prices spiked as well, crude

oil is trading above $110 a barrel. investors get data on consumer credit and later this week on retail sales and inflation, the dow slipping 14 points friday to 14,923, the nasdaq edging up one to 3660. scott, back to you. >> thank you very much. she mentioned bond yields, bond yields the pay off a bond makes, a good indication what wall stree street thinks is is going to happen with the feds. if they are going to stop injecting money the lower the price after bond the higher the yield. i could geek out about how this works and i know you won't let me. bottom line, you hear bond yields go up, that's a concern wall street has about the fed. >> we'll save the geeky part for later. >> for never. i know. >> oh, i got a phone call. thanks. >> he knows you well.

let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. speaking of yields going up, the weather's going up too. >> oh, yeah. we have a hot day ahead. 13 days until we officially kick off fall, jon and laura, it's going to feel summerlike. start with this live picture, one of those mornings if you live in a high rise in san francisco, some of you are going to wake up above this cloud deck. it's thin, you can see through it. see that transparency, however, it's enough to possibly force flight delays out of sfo so checking on that and the golden gate bridge is socked in. we're clear in livermore, no blanket of low clouds, still hitting the upper 60s to start the day. high pressure is the dominant feature in the forecast. it's going to be strong for today. we'll see plenty of 90s and triple digits inland, 70s and 80s at the coast. around the bay it works like this. 102 livermore, 103 in fairfield. concord at 98. and 78 in san francisco.

you cross that bay bridge into oakland, 87 degrees there for today. so make sure you're ready for the heat. you got the little ones headed back to school, make sure they have the spf 30 with them and maybe an extra bottle of water. tuesday into wednesday, temperatures start to drop off. then into this weekend, finally starting to feel more seasonal as we get so much closer to fall, and as you two know it gets cool around here pretty quick. if you are trying to hit the beach, a few great beach days throughout the next couple days. anthony slaughter, what are you watching on the roads? >> i'm watching something interesting. i want to show you, this is the morgan fire you can see from the east bay from our foster city cam. you see the cars, on the san mateo bridge. north of that, that's actually mt. diablo burning, you can see from our traffic cam perspective, this again, from the east -- not only from the east bay but the peninsula, so again, miles away across the bay. let's switch gears, on our

traffic maps, you can see this is again i'll cross the san mateo bridge. the good news f there is in any of this the winds are not blowing over the highway so the winds are out of the northwest, that's keeping things over rural communities. the good news if there had to be any, 680 not causing traffic headaches. the slowdowns to the altamont pass. >> thank you very much. a journalist free after spending almost four months captive in syria. the italian journalist and belgian national were captured. they landed in rome earlier. the journalist entered april 6 and disappeared three days later. it's not clear who they would two men. >> a new bill would give victims of childhood sex abuse the opportunity to stew the religious organizations and other groups that employed their abusers. this bill just passing the senate and assembly last week.

it would lift the statute of limitations for the alleged victims who missed previous deed lines for filing lawsuits because of the age restrictions, because of those restrictions. under this proposed law there are going to be a lot of changes that would allow the victims to have one year to bring lawsuits against the alleged abusers and the companies that employed them. >> bug experts say northern california has a wasp problem. there has been an explosion in the wasp population this year from san francisco to lake tahoe. dry weather and mild winter and spring has helped drive up the numbers. the population tends to reach their peak about this time of year. >> one of the most prominent pieces of graffiti on south bay freeways is gone. the rip tommy signs on the overpass on 280 in san jose has been painted over. the sign recently banished likely part of the graffiti

abatement program. what most don't realize is the history behind that sign. it was a memorial for a san jose man named tommy martin luther king jr. who died after slipping and falling down a 300-foot cliff at davenport beach in santa cruz county. police think he was intoxicated at the time. >> alum rock park remains closed because of high fire danger. visitors were turned away. no word on when that park will reopen. >> 5:20. we'll let you know coming up how one bay area landmark is turning to kickstart to keep things running.

morning. many have had to evacuate as we take a live look from a distance here, you see the mt. diablo brush fire. it's so called morgan fire burning on the east side of mt. diablo, actually started yesterday afternoon, quickly growing to 1500 acres. 5:23 now. >> a landmark theater is using kick starter so it can upgrade one of its 35 projectors to digital so. far the theater raised more than $75,000 enough to upgrade one proje projector. the campaign goes on through the end of the mark. they hope to get more donations. >> here is something cool. the former drummer for the grateful dead bringing new meaning to the term "use your head." for the latest tour, packing a cap with electrodes that records

brain activity. the sensors use the data to direct his movements of a light show accompanying music. hart developed this sensor cap with a neuroscientist who studies cognitive decline and prevention. hart says his hope is that it will be helpful and he is interested in the therapeutic potential of rhythm which makes a lot of sense. the brain reacting to music. >> we know it can change your mood. >> indeed it can. make you feel good and get up and dance. >> it's going to be a hot one. >> hot time summer in the city continues. good morning to you. i know it's a different song but i had to bring up what i can. temperatures looking good, if you want to get outdoors for a run, do it early. especially inland where temperatures are going to be quite warm again today. 102 degrees in places like livermore. it's back to business monday. we don't have flight delays out of san francisco or the good news is any major airport across

the nation. we're going to check on this all morning long. you got to get to where you got to go this morning usually that means work on a monday. 102 degrees in livermore, make sure you're ready for that, highs about 4:00 p.m. 92 in san jose. and 78 degrees, getting a little bit warm in the city by the bay in san francisco. let's check your drive at 5:25. anthony is in for mike inouye. >> i want to talk about something different, we usually talk about traffic here in this instance but right now i want to show you what we're looking at. this is the morgan fire burning the tom of mount diablo. not only are you seeing the smoke from this but you actually if you're waking up in the peninsula, some locations you can see the fire burning, again from the peninsula. show you on our traffic maps, this is approximately 20 to 30 miles away. so even if you're not affected directly by the mt. diablo fire or the morgan fire, whatever you call it this morning, you can still see it across the brom

>> i'm laura garcia-cannon. that fire broke out on the eastern side of the mountain near clayton yesterday afternoon. just about an hour ago we got an update from cal fire on the size of the fire. it's now scorched 1500 acres. >> that is where "today in the bay's" bob redell is. he's out covering it. >> reporter: good morning. firefighters just arrived at our location in clayton south of mt. diablo. we hope to get an update from them in the next couple of minutes or so. meantime, you can see the fire burning behind me. that is mt. diablo. we're on the north side, quite a few miles from the fire. what the fire's been doing, it's burning up to the top as you would expect. when i talked to cal fire about 30 to 40 minutes ago, they had reached the peak or it was reaching the peak. that glow you see is the peak. they do not think it was going to burn the lookout structure

because there is a large parking lot around that and also because they have enough resources there. they are going to add more resources, they said they ordered a lot more firefighters. so there's roughly 300 firefighters fighting this fire, it's called the morgan fire. they hope to get roughly another 300 firefighters in today along with dozers, engines and at 8:00 start flying aircraft again. this fire started around just after 1:00 yesterday afternoon, sunday afternoon. it grew to roughly 800 acres yesterday. still don't know what the cause is. overnight took out more acreage. it stands at 1,500. roughly doubling in size, still threatening roughly 100 homes as you've been reporting we know there have been evacuations in place. containment is still a couple days away. they do not expect this to be like the rim fire where it goes on and on, but this is also --

they have steep terrain so it's not something they can contain today. probably a couple of days because the terrain is so steep and the brush is so dry as we're aware we had very hot temps. we'll have an update for you coming up within the next half hour. reporting live here in clayton, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much for that. >> you know, bob, you mentioned the hot temperatures. we're in for another hot one. >> good morning to you, laura and jon. good morning to you at home. not only hot, dry breezes are expected to pick up. we head into this afternoon i want to give you an example on the map where we're watching this fire. you can see the wind is carrying all of that smoke away from clayton pushing it towards marsh creek springs. throughout the day, though, look what we expect. live to our futurecast, we stopped the clock at 11:00 a.m. you see where you get the warmer colors over mt. diablo. that's where we expect the gustiest winds to the tune of 20

miles per hour. they continue to increase to about 4:00 p.m. which is also the hottest time of the day. so even up in the higher elevations temperatures are expected to reach the 90s and the winds will play a large factor. they are dry northerly breezes, so very low humidity at 19%. the good news i can bring when it comes to the weather, the next couple of days temperatures are expected to drop off and we expect a return of the cool ocean breeze. however, that's going to push the smoke back in the opposite direction toward the metropolitan areas. so we'll watch this closely all morning long and let you know as things change. they will continue to do so. back to you, jon and laura. >> thank you very much. right now dozens of homes under evacuation this morning. christie smith is live in clayton. i'm not sure if we're going to that. are we doing that now? we don't have christie. we do have christie. we do. tell us what's happening out there. >> reporter: good morning to you. we're at the clayton community

library which has been turned into an evacuation center for people who need to leave their homes. the red cross has this shelter set up. there's one couple here, not inside, they are outside staying in their car because they brought their dogs with them and wanted to stay together. i wanted to show you, the top of mt. diablo in the background, the beacon flashing. you can see an orange glow there off to the left. red cross volunteers are keeping a close eye on the ridge line near the library because it keeps flaring up. this has been going on since we got here at about 4:15 this morning. neighbors stood watch on their own properties as helicopters dropped water on the dry hills that were going up in flames, not knowing what would happen next because many had horses, they already had a plan in place to evacuate. about 50 to 75 structures threatened, evacuations include

trail ridge road, wrestleman, east trail, upper trail, and lower trail road. we spoke with one homeowner about what he had to go through. >> there are 60 acres of open land behind my house, 40 acres of open land on the other side of my house and if a spot fire hits either of those i'm sandwiched in between. fats the fate of most of us who live up here. >> reporter: these mandatory evacuations started yesterday on oak hill lane, also the curry canyon road area. and back live again, i wanted to show you, the red cross, they keep coming with their cameras keeping an eye on things saying if anyone needs help they have cots ready to go. right now pretty quiet out here this morning. reporting live in clayton, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you, christie. and for up-to-the-minute information on the fire head to our website nbcbayarea.com. we'll also have updates throughout the newscast and during the "today" show.

custody. before that, on friday, a man was shot and killed in front of his home in the berryessa neighborhood. there are 37 homicides in san jose so far this year. >> let's get a check on the weather for you. it's monday, day one of the work week. time to get outside and brace yourselves for heat. christina loren is here. >> it's going to be a scorcher in parts of the bay area. we're talking triple digit plus temps. getting very close to the century mark even in places like gilroy later on today. this is what we're working with. 67 degrees in livermore, 63 san jose and 55 degrees to start the day in gilroy. if you have outdoor activities that you need to take care of, make sure you do it early. it's going to be a hot day all the way through tuesday, in fact. temperatures well above average. near 100 inland. our air quality suffering because we have the active fire

burning and we're back to the moderate range as we head throughout day today, the dome of high pressure, that sinking air, not great news for our air quality. keep that in mind. if you have respiratory issues limit your outdoor activities to morning and evening. throughout the day today, it's going to be really hot with temperatures at about 102 degrees in places like livermore, 103 fairfield, once again we're going to give you an update on the mt. diablo brush fire. we expect the winds to play a factor. anthony is tracking that fire from some of his traffic live cameras. >> yes, you can see this, not only from the east bay but places in the peninsula like foster city that are up to 20 to 30 miles away from. good news as you mentioned is that the winds are out of the northwest, more of an onshore wind so that's keeping a lot of the smoke and fire away from the highway. unfortunately over areas near that fire across the community. good news again, i'm the traffic guy, got to let you know what's happening. looks like it's all wide open

necessary this morning. we've got a team of reporters covering all angles of this. we'll check in live with them coming up. it's 5:41. secretary of state john kerry heading home from a trip to europe to brief congress on the situation in syria. speaking in a news conference in lond london, kerry insisted the united states knows syrian president assad used chemical weapons against civilians. he also made the case for an international military response against syria. >> and the world needs to focus on it, pay attention to it or we give license to other dictators or other groups in other parts of the world to engage in similar behavior and just make things worse for everybody. >> kerry said ultimately the solution to the conflict in syria lies in political negotiations. but he stressed the need for military response to show the world leaders other nations will not tolerate the use of chemical

viewers may find this picture disturbing. hospital officials say this man was found lying unconscious critically injured in union square. he had no wallet or i.d., only a jeep key and house key. authorities say the man is between 30 and 40, 5'10", 165 pounds. anyone with information should call the san francisco sheriff's office. >> police investigating the death of a man at candlestick park during the 49ers game. the man died when he fell from an upper walkway. witnesses telling police that man appeared to be drunk when he made that fall. off-duty medics and police officers reportedly gave him first aid but the man died before he could be taken to the hospital. police say they are now in the process of now fiing the m inot man's family. >> somber in san bruno as residents mark the third anniversary of a deadly explosion. a small memorial service planned

in the crestmore neighborhood. nearly half of the 38 homes destroyed have been rebuilt. still, more than a dozen lots remain empty. on september 9, 2010, a gas pipeline owned by pg&e exploded, creating a massive fire ball that levels homes and killed eight people. the mayor is pressing the state to hit pg&e with $4 billion fine. pg&e says it reached a $70 million settlement with the city and is working to improve pipeline safety. >> a grass fire near sonoma forcing road closures, the fire burned about 40 acres, destroying five buildings and damaging power lines out there. the chp had to close highway 121 where it meets up with 116, that's about with three miles south of sonoma. that fire is out now and the roads are back open but the flames were serious out there as you can see. the cause of this fire remains under investigation.

on campus which is where they are doing it this year. i don't know if you read something into that. >> perhaps. >> you know you'll be on top of it. breaking news out of fremont where crews on the scene of a house fire. two people inside had to be rescued. those flames broke out at about 4:30. this is farwell drive menear mallory avenue. what can you tell us? >> reporter: unfortunately it's a very intense situation. we got here about 20 minutes ago, i've been speaking to neighbors. you can see this is a heavily involved fire that was called in by neighbors at 4:31. so these firefighters from fremont fire, they have been fighting these flames for about 90 minutes now. one neighbor tells me that at its height the flames were 40 to 50 feet up shooting out of the center of the home from the roof. you mentioned two people

rescued, actually i'll tell you that according to neighbors this home is vacated by a family of three. a married couple and their son who is said to be in his 20s. they did get these people out. however, a neighbor on scene tells me that when he came out to see what was going on he saw two people being worked on, cpr being done by some paramedic crews, also we're hearing that one firefighter was injured with second-degree burns. we are waiting to get that information. all of this information coming to me from neighbors in this area. but still as i said, two-alarm fire heavily involved, fremont fire doing their best. pg&e is also out on scene because the power in the close vicinity has been knocked out of these homes. that's one of the reasons so many came out. if we want to show you that this is become a neighborhood
