there. the lights twinkling on this monday, september 9th, this is "today in the bay." 6:01. we're here to get your work week started. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we have an update to breaking news in fremont where firefighters are battling a two-alarm house fire. it's happening on farwell drive near mallory avenue. firefighters got the call about 4:30 this morning. we understand three people have been rescued from the home and taken to the hospital. their conditions are unknown at this hour but a neighbor tells us they were performing cpr on two of them. one firefighter was taken to the hospital. marla tellez is at the scene gathering the latest information for us. we'll get an update from her coming up. let's move to a developing

story in the east bay. a wild fire is burning out of control there on the eastern side of mt. diablo. right now new evacuation orders are in place as flames continue burning through 1500 acres of brush and grass. firefighters working hard battling this fire. many more are on the way to help as the fire there moves south away from clayton and close to the northeast side of mt. diablo state park. we can tell you we have a team in place with complete coverage of the long morning ahead for the firefighters and the crews out there. and for the people that have been forced to scramble from their homes. we start things with bob redell live in clayton, who talked to the crews about the around-the-clock fire fight. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you mentioned 1500 acres, that's a doubling in size. yesterday it was roughly 800

acres. this morning the morgan fire on mt. diablo behind me is now at 1500 acres. we received an update from firefighters who tell us when you look at all of the fires in the state right now, cal fire is giving this one high priority because it is burning through an area that hasn't burned iniu6 a long time apd and also this is an urban area. 100 homes threatened. you look south you can see the glow of the fire. you might be able to see the plume of smoke as the sun starts to come up. but that's the glow of the fire as it burns up the back side, it has approached the peak where cal fire sent engines to protects the historic lookout building and communication equipment. they do not expect those to burn. they believe they will be able to protect them. in two hours at 8:00, barringing problems with the weather, they will begin an air attack with two tankers dropping fire retardant to keep this fire from spreading. it's consumed 1500 acres, 10%

contained. 300 firefighters on the scene. they ordered another 200 firefighters and more equipment. they are expected to arrive later today to try to get a handle on this fire proving difficult to put out. >> california's experienced one of the driest years in its history so the fuel on the mountain all over california are extremely dry. this fire has little wind on it so it's driven by the fuel and the topography up there. if you've been up on mt. diablo you know it's steep, rugged terrain and very few roads so the access is going to hamper us as far as getting to it. that's where the aircraft are going to help today. >> reporter: firefighters tell us it's hard to get an idea when they would be able to contain this. it's only 10% contained. they probably would get a better idea later today, tomorrow, perhaps they could have containment some time this week. as far as the cost, still not clear though they believe it started along morgan territory

road. along the roadside. one firefighter was hurt, minor injury to the foot. recording live in clayton looking south at mt. diablo. >> having a tough go. the weather conditions aren't going to help. it's going to be hot. i want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> it's going to be really hot. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. go ahead and start with the current conditions out there right now. we've got a sustained wind speed 10 to 15 miles per hour out of the northwest. we expect that to increase as we head throughout day. take to the your futurecast, this is looking for winds. you can see we expect the heaviest wind over mt. diablo later on today. where you get the warmer colors, 20-mile-per-hour sustained wind speeds that will increase as we head throughout 4:00 p.m. which is also the hottest time of the day. 90 degrees the expected temperature and the high peaks of mt. diablo, 19% humidity as we get into the evening, and we

could see gusts, take those embers, so we're concerned about the situation when it comes to the weather. into the next couple days, we'll see some improvement, westerly flow, cool ocean air. we'll talk more about that coming up and temperatures will drop off. today not looking good for the fire burning about 15 hours, quadrupled in size. >> thank you very much. 6:06. as firefighters race to put out the flames people who live in the zone are forced from their homes. a new round of evacuations just announced overnight. christie smith joins us at the clayton community library, where an evacuation center has been set up. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. we've seen just one couple in here so far. they have dogs with them so they decided to stay outside of the shelter and stay in their car. i wanted to show you what it looks like across the street from the community library this morning. you can see an orange glow on

the hill. some neighbors stopping to ask if there are road blocks to stop them from getting back home if they were to return. this morning you could see flames at the peak of mt. diablo, see them from the street along clayton road. the fire moved very quickly when it started forcing people to evacuate. we spoke to people leaving the oak hill lane area, that's where the first evacuations were. they tell us that the fire was so hot that it actually created its own wind, many had horses there and already had a plan to leave or they got help leaving with their animals, while helicopters dropped fire retardant. 50 to 75 structures threatened. we spoke with one man whookñ wat home but his wife was. >> she was nervous on the phone, yeah, she was scared. definitely. talking to her on the phone i told her not to panic and i could feel the panic in her voice. >> reporter: red cross does have cots set up here at the library

crisis in syria as president obama plans to address the american people. kerry spoke in london overnight our time after meeting with the british foreign secretary. kerry says there is compelling evidence the syrian military used chemical weapons against its own people. reporters asked kerry if there is anything that bashar al assad could do or offer that would stop an attack. >> he could turn over every single bit of his chemical weapons to the international community in the next week, turn it over. all of it. without delay. and allow a full and total accounting for that. but he isn't about to do it and it cannot be done. >> today members of the house will watch videos the obama administration says shows syrian victims of chemical weapons. president obama will address the nation at 6:00 tomorrow night. we'll bring to the you live here on nbc bay area. >> closer to home this morning investigations under way after a deadly weekend in san jose with

a total of three homicides in just three days. on friday, a man was shot and killed outside his home in the berryessa neighborhood, saturday a woman was found stabbed to death in south san jose, then yesterday a man was found slumped over in a car parked near spartan stadium at san jose state university. in that recent case police telling us there are signs of foul play but they would not say how this man died. san jose police right now assisting in this case. investigators, they say they do have some leads but so far no arrests in that case have been made. 6:10 now. time to check back in with meteorologist christina loren. lots of folks getting ready to start their day. going to be warm. >> if you've got the little ones headed to school, make sure they are ready for the heat especially playing on the blacktop. make sure you have the spf 30 plus and some sun screen in addition to the extra bottle of

bruno neighborhood killing eight people and destroying dozens of homes. residents will gather today for a memorial. and following a five-week break, congress returning from summer recess and the crisis in syria of course will be on top of the agenda. today house members will be briefed on president obama's proposed airstrike against the country in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons in syria. >> what you say might be repeated on the news. >> scott mcgrew facebook wants to be quoted. >> you look at twitter, we talk about twitter all the time. i might say elan tweeted this or president obama tweeted that. we don't generally talk about what happens on facebook. facebook's more of a closed off system. facebook is changing that a little this morning, opening ñ publicly to certain news agencies including buzz feeds, cnn and the "today" show. in hopes that hoda and kathie

lee will quote facebook more often. for instance, if cnn wanted to see what people were saying about the fire on mt. diablo that's easy to find on twitter. unless somebody on cnn happens to be your friend on facebook they wouldn't see your post. now if you set your post to public, certain news agencies will be able to see it. i should point out we're not one of them. facebook shares look like they will cross back over to record territory again today. friday they hit 44.61 before settling under $44 a share. also you recall we got the august job numbers. 169,000 jobs added. that's enough to keep us even. remember, that many kids enter the work force as adults each month. it's kind of a wash. i know what you're thinking, you're saying isn't that undersecretary for the treasury for international affairs. it is. the washington post reporting that president obama wants to appoint her to some kind of position at the federal reserve.

fire over mt. diablo and you can see that smoke plume even from the bay bridge. so we're watching this closely, team coverage for you, a close look at what we are expecting in terms of the weather. coming up in my next report. but for right now i want to show you a live look of san jose. it's going to be a hot day across the bay area. even here i'm forecasting mid-90s. so you can see we have a little bit of the marine layer formation but not much. it's not going to last long at all. temperatures now mostly in the 60s. 65 degrees for livermore, 63 in san jose, 60 in sunnyvale. we have the low 50s for you to kick off the monday. your monday up in santa rosa, 51 degrees there, 50 in novato and 50 in san francisco. throughout day high pressure takes its grip over the bay area. it's going to be one of the hottest days all year long. the forecast about 102 degrees in livermore in addition to high pressure. we're starting out so mild, we'll see dry northerly winds pick up and so for us, that mean

it's going to be a hot day. i want to make sure you are prepared, drinking water, seeking shade. if the you have outdoor activities to take care of the earlier you can get them taken care of the bert off you're going to be. early morning and evening hours look good for you. 102 degrees, livermore. it's going to be hot, 92 in san jose, 78 degrees in san francisco. seven-day outlook tells the story. not as hot tomorrow which is good news for the fire fighting efforts on the morgan fire which is burning over mt. diablo and the east bay. the east bay gets hot. we're going to look at the conditions that firefighters are up against, our local heroes later on today. here is anthony. >> we're talking about the accident that happened on 101, this is in the south bay in san jose. coming through the santa clara valley, things are slow. not only are we seeing things slow from montague expressway down to bayshore highway all the way through brokaw and slow past across 880. let's take in another ro

perspective. on our livermore drive through the altamont pass, things are slow through livermore. a slow spot through antioch on 4. we want to show you what thing looks like from the bay bridge approach. lots of cars on the road. the metering lights are turned on. we also want to give you another perspective of the fire burning on top mt. diablo. you can see it not only from a few of our cams but here it is from the peninsula side. we're talking about 20 to 30 miles away and you can see the fire burning right atop mt. diablo. another shot we're showing you since the sun started to come up. you can see almost look likes a volcano burning atop mt. diablo. the good news with this smoke if there had to be any that it's blowing on shore. so a lot of that is blowing away from the highway, not expected to impact 680. so that is the silver lining. back to you guys. >> we'll take that. thank you. is 6:21 now. a proposal to rename the western

span of the bay bridge after former san francisco mayor willie brown could win approval as soon as today. we have a look at the western span this morning. the resolution set to come up for a final vote in the state senate. it's been approved by the assembly. the renaming, however, has been met with opposition from local leaders who claim it violates the senate's policy against naming roadways after people who are still living. the plan to rename the western span has been backed by the state naacp. >> coming up extreme heat prompting fire danger throughout the bay area. wye popular park is shutting down due to the soaring temperatures. >> and we continue to watch a massive fire that has now doubled in size overnight. that is happening in the east bay. this is a live look from our chopper. you can see the flames very intense. we'll have all of the details on this coming up in a live report. so what can i get you?

that's right. they ring in the bell signaling what's happening out there, people hoping the numbers continue to jump. got on a roll. we'll see if it continues on this monday, september 9th, this is "today in the bay." it is 6:30. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we have an update to breaking news we're following in treatment this morning where crews are on the scene of a house fire where three people inside had to be rescued. they along with two firefighters are in the hospital this morning. the flames broke out about 4:30 this morning on farwell drive. today in the bay's marla tellez talked to neighbors, they describe a tense scene. >> reporter: good morning. the fremont fire is in what is called an overhaul mode that's going on. they are spraying down any hot spots. it looks like they have the fire under control as you said neighbors called it in this

morning. so this has been under way for two hours now. some neighbors say they woke up because they heard loud banging noises, others woke up when the power went out. a family of three lives at this home. a married couple and their son. a girl next door told us what she saw when she ran out shortly after the flames ignited. >> i saw a fireman trying to pull the teenager out, the teenage boy, and like he wasn't coming out. they like, they got like ten people trying to pull him out and pull him out. and then they finally did. and then a fireman crawled into the window to try to save the parents and i saw them trying to pull the parents out and like a terrible scene. >> you are a retired firefighter so you know about this. you saw the flames you know this is a big one. >> it's a big one. it's one where the fire got a head start. the fire got a head start. >> reporter: joe, the retired

firefighter, tells me he saw paramedics performing cpr on the parents, that's what he saw when he arrived. the parents' condition not known at this point. but i can tell you that two firefighters, they were taken away from the scene battling this fire, with minor to moderate injuries. that's what we are being told from fire officials out here. back here live, we want to show you the rescue efforts happened through these broken windows here. you can see the windows had been busted out. that's where they pulled at least the son out. and i believe the parents as well. i want to mention that fremont police helped in the rescue efforts as well. at the height of the fire neighbors tell me the flames were shooting 40 to 50 feet into the air. certainly a scary scene. at this point the cause is under investigation. just too early to tell. live in fremont, marla tellez, "today in the bay." a developing story in the east bay, a wild fire there is

burning out of control on the eastern side of mt. diablo. looking at over the bay bridge you can see it out in the distance, that smoke blanketing clayton out there. you can also see it as far away as danville and dublin. right now new evacuation orders are in place as the flames continue burning through at least 1500 acres of brush and grass. those numbers continue to climb. more than 300 firefighters currently on scene battling as this one moves south away from clayton, and close to that northeast side of mt. diablo state park. we have a team in place for coverage, complete coverage for you, all morning long. ahead on this fire and for the people that have been forced to scramble out of their homes to safety, will be checking in with our team on the ground covering this one in less than 15 minutes. >> a fire near sonoma forced road closures, that burned 40 acres. the chp had to close 121 where

it meets at 116 about three miles south of sonoma. look at that smoke. the fire is now out and the roads back open. the cause is under investigation. it was that kind of weekend. here the weather conditions will have an effect on the fires. give you a live look out there, the one on mt. diablo, the smoke pouring all over the area. christina loren talking about how the conditions will probably impact the firefighters' work all day long. >> good morning to you. i want to step out of the way because 45 miles away from san bruno we are seeing a vivid picture of that smoke plume. you can see the general direction in which the smoke plume is headed. right to the maps, northwest flow, winds have relaxed a little overnight but they are going to pick up as we head throughout this afternoon. the smoke plume headed away from clayton. they are seeing plenty in the area. this is what we expect. 90 degrees, 19% humidity, a lot

of dry brush to fuel this fire. so it'sxzen looking great for today. as we get through the next couple days, temperatures will drop off, better humidity and that's good news for everybody working the fire. it's something we're going to be talking about at least for the next couple days. i want to prepare you it's going to be a hot day. 93 at noon, 102 at 4:00. that's when our highs come in this time of year. 89 degrees bayside and 78 degrees at the coast. even a very warm day in places like san francisco. i'll show you when we will start to cool off your seven-day forecast ready in my next report. first let's check on your drive. back to work with anthony slaughter. >> thank you. you can see we're getting more perspective of this fire. you can see off in the distance there is the fire, not only you can see it from our san francisco cam but you can see it from the bay bridge toll plaza cam. the metering lights are turned on. so the traffic is really

300 firefighters on the ground, hundreds more on the way. we have a team in place with complete coverage of the long morning ahead for fire crews, and for the people sent scrambling. let'begin with christie smith live in clayton with more on the overnight evacuation orders in effect in several neighborhoods. >> reporter: >> she's gathering new information from the people that have been evacuated from the scene. we'll check in with her. also it's not just people evacuated from the wildfire zone. >> that is right. there is a center being set up for animals in the area. the contra costa county fair grounds being used to house horses, cattle, hogs, sheep and goats. barns and pens have been set up and local businesses have donated water buckets to try to help out this effort. the animals now expected to arrive some time this morning. the fair grounds will ultimately house the animals as long as

needed so everybody pitching in trying to help this out. for more information about bringing animals to the fair grounds call the number on the screen. 925-757-4400. you can also find that number on our website that's at nbcbayarea.com. >> it's going to be a long day ahead, jon, for more bay area firefighters heading out to mt. diablo to help get a handle on the fire. bob is live at the front lines with an update. >> reporter: good morning to you. we are north of mt. diablo, looking south now at the mountain itself. you can see on the back side where fire has been burning since after 1:00 yesterday afternoon. the latest from cal fire it has been approaching if not already reached the peak of mt. diablo where they sent engines to protect the historic outlook structures up there and the communication equipment. they believe that's not going to be a problem as far as being

able to protect that. a live look from the chopper, an idea of how large this fire was and is. yesterday it was roughly 800 acres, it's doubled, now roughly 1500 acres and is threatening roughly 100 homes. they have got 300 firefighters on the scene, it's only 10% contained. they have ordered another 200 firefighters and more equipment. they are expected to arrive later today. in just over an hour at 8:00 this morning, barring problems with the weather and there shouldn't be basically looking at the skies and the fact we have our chopper up, cal fire will begin an air attack, with two tankers to try to keep this fire from spreading. after that they will make assessment whether to bring other aircraft to try to put this out. >> california's experiencing one of the driest years in its history.

the fuels on the mountains all over california are extremely dry. this fire has little wind so it's driven by the dry fuels and the topography. if you've been up on mt. diablo it's steep, rugged terrain. >> reporter: right now it's only 10% contained as i mentioned. they don't know when it will be contained. hope to get a better idea today or tomorrow, maybe reach containment later in the week. as far as the cause, undetermined. they believe it started along morgan territory road. one firefighter was hurt, minor injury to their foot. but just to give you a sense of how important this fire is, of all of the wild fires in the state that are burning throughout california right now, cal fire has given the morgan fire, this is called high

we expect the strongest wind. i stopped the clock at noon. getting 20-mile-per-hour sustained wind speeds. we continue your futurecast. stop it at 4:00 p.m., and we're talking about four to five hours of pretty gusty conditions and of course that brings about the threat of traveling embers so this is something we're going to watch from the nbc bay area weather center all day long. 90 degrees the forecasted high. 19% humidity. winds between 12 and 5. this is what we expect temperaturewise. 102 in livermore, a hot day across the bay area. drink lots of water, maybe bring a hat to work. 92 in san jose, 88 degrees on the way to redwood city. 78 even rather warm in san francisco where a lot of people don't have air conditioning. do what you can. it's a good idea to close the blinds in your home before you leave. especially when it comes to the fire fighting efforts tuesday into wednesday we're going to

see the heat start to break back to the upper 80s by wednesday into thursday. a closer look at the morning drive. >> things are slow on 101 coming through san jose you can see the northbound direction bogged down because of two accidents on 101. it's at brokaw, the first one, if you are traveling 101 northbound, the second one you encounter, that's bayshore highway. because of the two accidents things are slow. also a slow spot we see, the altamont pass through livermore on 580, a lot of that smoke blowing from the northwest to the southeast, so that impacts this area here. so folks not only having to deal with the slow go commute but wls the smoke that's drifting over the highway and 580. you'll notice on 4, antioch slow, not bad once you get past that. let's take you outside and show you what we're looking at. from our bay toll plaza approach there, see it slow going.

the metering lights on about with an hour. another perspective of the fire from across the bay, in san francisco, you can see it off in the distance. you can get a good perspective and see the smoke billowing up. the good news, high pressure in control, we've got a lot of sinking air so it's fot going to get picked up and drift a lot into the upper levels of the atmosphere. you can see some of the burning peaks here across mt. diablo. really impressive stuff as those firefighters continue to battle that blaze. back to you. >> thank you very much. an update to breaking news in fremont. five people including two firefighters are in the hospital this morning after/buñ a fire erupted at a home. those flames broke out on farwell drive near mallory avenue. marla tellez is live at the scene. she joins us with new details. what can yyou tell us? >> reporter: crews are going to be out here two hours, the

firefighters, they are in overhaul mode which means they are cleaning up the mess. you can see the flames are out but i'm not sure if the camera can pick it up, some smoke is coming from the top of the house, the roof of the house. the damage is done. it is excessive as well. we have brand new pictures to show you thanks to a neighbor who lives about four doors down. he took these pictures when he came out when he was woken up because the power went out. that's what woke him up. he snapped these. you can see the flames raging in these pictures at the height, flames said to be 50 feet in the air. laura mentioned five people taken to the hospital. two firefighters suffered minor to moderate injuries. it was a family of three in this home, two parents and their son. the neighbor who gave us these pictures, joe, a retired firefighter, he tells me he saw paramedics working on the

patients performing cpr. their conditions at this hour are still not known. but it seems to be a grim situation as far as they are concerned. again, we are waiting to get final word from the public information officer who was out here from fremont fire. the flames are out, five people taken to the hospital. live in fremont, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> 6:54. nothing short of a somber day in san bruno as we mark the third year to the day of that deadly explosion in that city. a small memorial service being planned in the neighborhood. today we can tell you nearly half of the 38 homes that were destroyed, they have been rebuilt. still, more than a dozen lots remain empty. back on september 9, 2010, a gas pipeline exploded in the neighborhood that created a massive fire ball developing homes and killing eight people. san bruno's mayor is pressing
