helium balloons attempts to land. we will tell you what is next for him, friday, september 13th, 2013. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. good morning. welcome to "today." it's 7:00 on the west coast. i'm matt lauer. >> good morning. i'm savannah guthrie with al roker and natalie morales. >> it breaks your heart when you think of how hard they worked to rebuild the section of the broad walk and shops and overtaken by flames. new concerns to the deadly flood waters in colorado. we have nbc's joe fryer. good morning, joe. >> reporter: good morning, matt.

a nerve wrecking feeling. roads like this are a common sight in the area making it hard to get around. so far in colorado, at least three people have died and the dangers are not over. overnight sirens in downtown boulder warn residents to move to higher ground as flood waters continue to rise. in commerce city near denver, a mandatory neighborhood evacuation over fears a massive dam could break. dams are failing under the pressure of record-breaking rainfall. in some spots, a foot in less than two days. flooding roads and cutting off communities. in a town of lafayette, swollen waters took out a bridge. rescue crews trying to flipped a car partially submerged fear until they hear a man inside pound on the floorboard.

>> nothing in my career i heard something so dramatic. we thought somebody would be expired in that car. he survived. it is a miracle. >> reporter: in boulder, the foothills are not safer with the water and free-falling mud which slid into gary chambers' house. >> right here, it is horrendous sound. >> reporter: the creek last week was dry and now it is strong enough to chew through the driveway. >> we will be stuck here. >> reporter: just up the road, neighbors grab their cat and flee as the waters hit their driveway and more. >> the banks are eroding. the house is in jeopardy. >> reporter: nature brought so many in the area and now it is what is keeping them away. colorado has brought in the national guard to help and the president has approved emergency

federal disaster relief. still many businesses here plan to stay closed today, including the university of colorado. matt and savannah. >> thank you, joe. >> we spoke to jerry morrell, the fire chief of colorado. we asked him what they are expecting today. >> we are expecting more rain today. it will clear up a bit and more rain. we are preparing for the worst. rising flood waters through the region. >> has it been difficult to try to evacuate people given so many roads are washed out? >> yes, it has been extremely difficult to get people motivated, i guess is the biggest thing, to move and get out of harm's way. >> as we saw in the piece a few moments ago, you were part of an incredible rescue. i know you shot some video of it as it was unfolding on your own

phone. can you tell me what happened? >> about 5:00 in the morning, somewhere around there, we got a call for an accident with injuries. we got to the scene and we found three cars at the bottom of the ravi ravine. a creek of flowing water. there should have been a road there, but it was gone. all three cars ended up in the drink, if you will. one person was evacuated and we had two car was water rescues to get people out. >> i know you have a lot to deal with. we appreciate your time. lafayette fire chief. thank you. good luck today. >> thank you very much. al has his eye on the flooding. >> unfortunately we will see a lull. we will show you what is coming. the rainfall that has fallen is spectacular in that we're talking about areas getting more rain in a 24-hour period than they do in a year.

colorado springs, 9 inches of rain. aurora, 12 inches. there is more coming as you can see another slug of moisture coming up into denver and boulder. the meadow lake dam area. upper low is just sitting there. it is not moving fast because the jet stream is up to the north. that allowed tons of moisture to stream into the area. we have flood watches from idaho into texas. why? because we're expecting over the next 24 hours another 3 to 4 inches of rain from central new mexico where they are seeing flooding, not as bad, but flooding on into denver. already the university of boulder is reporting 25% of the buildings have been damaged by water. parts of i-25 have water over them. the boulder creek overrun its banks. the jersey shore facing tough times. another round of devastation. this time from a raging fire and it is taking a toll on the

community recovering from super storm sandy. we have kristen dahlgren with more on the hot spots. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. we are now 18 hours after this fire got started and they are still pouring water on it trying to make sure none of the hot spots reignite. to give you some idea of how bad this fire was, four blocks on the boardwalk completely gone. you guys were just here. you were with governor christie after super storm sandy. a lot of people thought it could not get worse. they woke up to the realization they were wrong. >> this is obviously a just unthinkable situation for us to be standing here and watching this. >> reporter: the thick black smoke could be seen for miles as wind-swept flames hit the boardwalk taking down business after business.

many just reopened after devastated by super storm sandy. >> this is worse than sandy. >> reporter: the "today" show was just there when the boardwalk opened. >> this is a recipe. >> reporter: now? >> do you think anything is left? >> no, it is flattened. it is smoldering. >> reporter: he was there as a fire first caught thursday afternoon. >> suddenly black smoke billowing out from underneath the boardwalk. >> the store's on fire. don't go in! >> reporter: moments captured on the home video for the local news. once it started, it was almost impossible to stop. >> a wind that was 35 miles an hour blow from the south that really fueled the flames. >> reporter: within hours, the fire grew to ten alarms. 400 firefighters around the state in a desperate battle forced to fight the blaze from

above and use heavy machinery to tear into the newly rebuild boardwalk to build a fire break. with the businesses already gusted, in many cases, it was too late. >> when i got my first full briefing, i said to my staff, i feel like i'm going to throw up. >> reporter: governor christie took in the devastation three months after he reopened the boardwalk on memorial day weekend. a place set for so many which was the essence of the new jersey town. >> this is my childhood. not eaven a year after sandy. >> reporter: people waking up this morning to start rebuilding yet again. >> this is us. as soon as this is over, we will pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off and get back to work. >> reporter: the governor expected to do another briefing shortly here and take a look from the area. you see the scope of the damage. the investigation into what caused this is getting under way today.

it is still too early to determine the financial cost, but the emotional toll is very great around here. think about this, matt, we spoke to the owner in that piece, he had to flee from his home during sandy. he was storing baby pictures here and now they are all gone. >> kristen dahlgren, thank you very much. we have the chief fire coordinator from ocean county. mr. gabriel, good morning. >> good morning. >> are there still hot spots this morning? >> we still have a few hot spots at the southern section of the fire perimeter. we are not overly concerned about them, but it is more matter of getting our job done. >> the images are startling. it looked like a wall of flames by the wind and tar roofs.

what was your biggest challenge? >> the biggest challenge was the wind and wind-driven fire brands and embers blowing fire out ahead of us and behind us. that was the big issue. the wind was the biggest factor. >> i understand at one point, firefighters had to cut a trench to stop the fire and actually had to cut through new boardwalk so the fire would not jump over it. >> we had to do that twice, sir. first time we put all of our defenses in place and the fire just came on too hard, too fast. we could not do anything with it. we dropped back to the second point of defense and we did the same thing over again. cut another trench in the new boardwalk, unfortunately. that is where we made a stand. that is where all the units who did one heck of a job basically stopped the forward progress degreof the fire. >> you live in the area, brian. what are the emotions this

morning? >> i think on the fire side, i think our guys are good. i think our guys are tired. i don't think there is anything emotional after what we have been through after the last year. the emotional side is feeling bad for the business owners trying to get back up and running. >> we wish you luck. brian gabriel, thank you for talking to us. so sad. we were all there on memorial day weekend with the governor and first lady of new jersey. everybody's spirits were so high because so much had been accomplished in a short period of time. >> so much energy and hope and i think pride that it was rebuilt so fast. the first summer since sandy, they were looking good and people were coming out. heart breaking to see what has happened there. >> especially given the history of all those buildings and memories in that. rebuilding will be difficult. >> people rebuilding their own homes and now rebuilding their businesses a second time over. we have new developments overnight.

secretary of state john kerry is overseas meeting on syria. >> those talks continue with another round of crucial talks over syria and the chemical weapons. u.s. and russian officials meeting in geneva over syria handing over the chemical weapons. secretary of state john kerry calls the talks constructive. one day after syria asked to join the chemical weapons convention. russia's president putin said the move has what he calls serious intention. the taliban is claiming responsibility for a car bomb and gunfire attack on the consulate in herat in afghanistan. all of the americans in the consulate are safe. seven attackers were killed. a new nbc poll this morning indicates the impact is still being felt from the meltdown that started five years ago this

week. the president took office just after the crisis was over, but many are disappointed. 45% now approve of the president's handling of the economy in our poll. 52% disapprove. chuck todd is political director. chuck, with the gridlock congress, does the president has a shot of turning that around and improving on that image? >> we will see. all of it is a disconnect. middle america looks at what has happened and their own economic status and they are in stagnation mode. wall street is in a much better place and they see it and they don't like it. you have that issue and the president's credibility, this is five straight months he has been upside down on the economy. that, in turn, has helped republicans modestly. more people pick the republican party over the democratic party on issues dealing with the economy, but they don't trust

the republicans in the relating to the middle class. you have complete distrust. >> the poll found that a lot of people describe themselves as poor or middle class. they feel stuck there. what does this issay about the so-called american dream? >> this poll was the most striking thing. you have a majority of the folks in the poor or working class. they don't feel they can climb up to the next rung of the middle ladder. six years ago, a majority thought in the categories thought they would get out. >> chuck todd, thank you. speak of wall street. we have mary thompson joining us. one tweet from twitter getting attention. >> a tweet deal. twitter has filed to go public with 200 million customers. the ipo will be the most anticipated in the tech world

7:30 on friday morning. it is friday, september 13th. the morning after a devastating fire on the jersey shore where flames wiped out a boardwalk recently hit after super storm sandy. and in colorado, a different story, but as devastated. no immediate relief in sight for folks as thousands more are forced to flee from raging flood waters. we are following both of the breaking stories. i'm savannah guthrie alongside matt lauer and al roker and natalie morales. we have joe in colorado. >> reporter: the rain has died down a little, matt.

new york city t. 46-year-old actress was knocked to the ground by a photographer who was trying to get a shot of the actress as she entered the carlyle hotel. kidman told e news the incident was awful saying luckily i got up but there will be a time when someone does not. he was cited for riding his bike on the sidewalk but was not arrested. this is just the latest incident of paparazzi crossing the line to get the perfect picture. a bill creating stricter punishment for celebrity photographers, specifically when it comes to children has already passed in california. actresses halle berry and jennifer garner testified in support of the bill last month. >> she doesn't want to go to preschool because these grown men are there. >> they have a bounty on their heads every day. every day there's as many as 15 cars of photographers waiting outside our home. >> for celebrities dealing with

we are back at 7:43 with the case that grabbed national attention. rebecca is speaking out about being born into a polygamist sect. what made her leave and her fight for justice. she tells her story in the new book the witness wore red. here's keith morrison with the story. >> reporter: it's called short crick, the two towns along the utah, arizona border. full of the flds where polygamy is practiced. this is the life rebecca was born. >> you should want to be a pure wife because it was more holy. >> she was chosen for a high honor. she was the 19th wife of the

prophet which to her was no honor at all. >> i didn't want to marry him. he was 85 and i was 19. >> there was another one in her life, his son warren. and when word got out she refused to cater to his sexual demands a war was threatened. he said don't you ever, ever, ever tell your husband no again. if you do, you will be destroyed in the flesh. >> and when the profit died and warren jeffs took over the church, rebellious rebecca was in deep trouble. >> he pointed his finger and me and he said i will break you. >> reporter: she fled from the community and the church then, but really, the war had just begun. as rebecca adjusted to life on the outside, many members of her huge polygamist family remained loyal to warren jeffs and they and hundreds of members moved to

texas where they built a brand new community called the yearning for zion ranch. one day in march 2008, rangers raided the ranch on a strength of a calling claiming to be an abused 16-year-old. not an easy assignment. >> it was a very confusing situation. most of these ladies dressed a like. they sounded alike. their hair was fixed the same and there was only about four or five very common names on the ranch. so it was very difficult, as you might imagine to differentiate who belongs to who and who is who. >> reporter: so they recruited rebecca to help make sense of it all. they took her inside the sacred flds temple where they found something strange. two beds. from her time in the flds rebecca knew immediately these must have been used to perform holy ordinances. >> where we would be taught the correct way to conceive a child t laws of creation.

i'm matt lauer along with savannah guthrie and natalie morales and al roker. we're turning to boulder, colorado, and a story closer to us here, the devastating fire along the jersey shore. >> we'll start with the fire. kristen dahlgren is there. i guess we're really seeing the scope of the damage? >> reporter: yeah. good morning, savannah. it is just massive. take a look. fire crews have been out here all night. they are still out here working on this trying to make sure there are no other hot spots in there. at the same time, the state fire marshal has been here beginning the investigation into just what caused this fire. they are also beginning damage assessments now that the sun is up they can get a better picture of everything. but it really is just devastating. about four blocks at least of this boardwalk now gone. keep in mind, this is the same boardwalk that was devastated by

superstorm sandy just last year. dozens of businesses have been lost. the people here looking at rebuilding once again less than a year after sandy. they talk about jersey strong and the governor was here talking about it yesterday. they are going to have to be to rebuild once again. back to you, matt and savannah. >> kristen, thank you very much. let's get to the situation in colorado. this is that rain that al's been talking about for days. mike seidel is in boulder, colorado. >> reporter: good morning. behind me is boulder creek. this morning roaring at a record crest of almost eight feet coming right through town. in fact, last night word was that a 30-foot wall of water was going to come through town so they evacuated 4,000 residents. fortunately that did not come to fruition. but many residents have been cut off, rockslides and debris slides. you can't drive on highway 36. it's still cut off.

also this morning, a break in the heavy rain for now. still a risk of flash flooding through today and into the weekend across boulder, denver, and the entire front range. matt? >> our thoughts are with those in colorado and along the jersey shore. the u.s. is praising afghan security sources for protecting americans during a deadly attack this morning on the u.s. consulate in western afghanistan. two afghans were killed but all americans were saved. the taliban has claimed responsibility for the car bomb and gunfire attack that left seven insurgents dead. a court appearance for surviving suspect dz hchkar dzhkar tsarnaev. a dramatic rescue last night

after a girl fell into a narrow two-feet hole. the firefighters lowered a harness to reach the toddler. a local football coach jumped in there to help. it took over an hour to lift them to safety. casey anthony could be forced to testify about her daughter's disappearance. anthony was acquitted in the 2008 death of her daughter caylee. now she's being sued for defamation by a woman who claims that casey falsely implicated her in the case. her attorney believes that she will not be able to plead the fifth at a deposition next month. take a look at this viral video. this comes out of russia. this thrill seeker on a rubber raft being pulled by a water scooter. he tilts the inflatable raft so it gets airborne. this is done without any special effects, as far as we can tell,

location. >> yeah. >> so you spent more time with the cast and crew than you would shooting in new york or los angeles. did you like that? or was it too much of a good thing. >> no, it was a great. we were in a compound and this whole postproduction set up in normandy and it was very, very nice. >> this is what michelle pfeffer said. he is such an icon. there maybe five actors that have god-like status for me. i'm not sure she was talking about you. but she did mention your name. when you hear that, and you start to work on a set with younger actors and even younger crew members, are you conscious of the effect you might be having on them when you show up for work. >> no. no. i mean, i don't like -- i like to -- if there is that at all i always like to make people feel at ease at the end of the day. that stuff goes away quickly i think. >> but do you think you have a responsibility in term of the way you react.

if i'm a 23-year-old grip on a movie or 16-year-old extra on a movie and i'm standing there on set, you walk by i might be thinking this is robert bleeping de niro. do you feel a responsibility to conduct yourself in a certain way? >> no, just to be nice and put them at ease. that's all you need to do. >> the character in this movie, one of the things he does to keep busy, he writes a memoir. have you ever thought of that? >> i have thought about it. it's not that easy, really. i've thought of doing it with someone. you never know. >> some people write memoir, they go chronological. they start in the beginning and other people start with a chapter which is the most important event in their lives. how would you do that? >> i don't know. i don't know, where i would start. god, that's a good question. >> is there a moment though in your life that you think is the moment that's kind of changed your life the most or created

who you are the most? >> well, there are so many things that i have and ways to look at it. i don't know where to begin. that's the problem. i'm sorry, you know, i only thought maybe of doing a movie about -- not my life but things that i understood as sort of a kind of auto -- not really auto biographical but stuff that i relate to. it has to be connected to something that you can make it personal with. >> but also when you write a book, you sit down to write a memoir these days, it seems that publishers want you to go deep into stories that people never heard before. you also seem to be a pretty private person. >> right. >> would you be willing to give the publisher the kind of things that they can go out and sell books on. >> probably not. >> it would be a very short book. >> yeah. >> what's your next project?

you have last vegas coming up. >> yes. >> we spent time together on the set of that movie which was supposed to be las vegas, but down in atlanta. you've seen it. what do you think? >> it's good and it's hard for me to tell. you have to see it with an audience. i didn't see it with an audience so i'm going to see it again when we open it and go to the premiere i'll see it. i hear the reaction is good. >> the cast in this one is you and michael douglas and morgan freeman and kevin kline. >> yeah. >> it's about as good as it gets. >> we had a good time. >> yeah? what else is happening now? what else do you have in the works. >> did a movie with stallone called grudge match. >> someone described that as rocky versus raging bull? >> that's sort of the sub text. it's more about -- it's these two aging fighters, guys our age who didn't have their last match their third match and i'm trying to get him to do it and he

reporter paints a detailed account of clark who died in 2011. two weeks shy of her 105th birthday. >> she had a fabulous collection of $50,000 french dolls. she was a painter, a collector of fine paintings and musical instruments. >> reporter: clark's properties were equally extravagant. 15,000 square feet on 5th avenue and an estate in santa barbara and this 22 room connecticut mansion which she never moved into. in fact, for the last 20 years of her life, clark didn't set foot in a single one of her homes. choosing, instead, to live in a new york city hospital room. >> why did she end up there in the first place and why did she stay. >> the event was she was sick. she had skin cancer. >> reporter: once she recovered, she realized she was more comfortable there than at home and would spend the rest of her life, more than 7,000 nights in the hospital. >> she insisted on staying.

$400,000 a year will keep you in the hospital. >> reporter: during that time, clark kept busy writing letters. some 20,000 pages were discovered after her death and struck up a close relationship with her private nurse. paul newell, the coarthur is her first cousin once removed. he reached out to her in 1994. >> she had a wonderful memory. >> reporter: though they never met in person, he recorded their phone conversations. >> hello paul. >> hello, how are you? >> okay. how is everything with you paul? >> she also had a collection of barbie dolls and was fond of the cartoon characters the smurfs. >> she leaves behind a $300 million estate. she was generous with her fortune sending thousands to people she barely knew and giving away much more to those close to her like her aattorney,

i want to get to this food. i love chicken especially. we were reading about your background. i wasn't aware of how many different kinds of lives you've had. >> i've lived many lives. that's probably why i'm a cat mama. i'm 38 and right out of high school i went into the air force for broadcasting. i did radio work for some time and i lived in korea like good morning vietnam and then i just -- you guy versus my military picture up. >> did you think we would ask and not show the picture? >> so i went away and enjoyed my time in the military. did radio and new york hot 97. >> but there was a love of food and here you go. >> now you have your own cook book. >> can you believe it? >> you have ten different chicken wing recipe. >> yeah, wings are the first thing i ever did on food network. lots of chicken wings but these are my fried three piece chicken

wings. >> you brine those though. >> yes. kosher salt and sweet tea. soak it in the south. that's some water. >> what did you think it was? vodka. >> i don't know. it is sunny anderson. >> drunken chicken. brining, if you're wondering what that is, it's just a marinade and getting flavoring in there and the salt is important because not only does it flavor the inside of the chicken but it plays it nice and moist. >> that's right here and you pat it dry and what you want to do is start to dredge. i build a dredge in a paper bag. very simple. what's different with my dredge, it's not just ploflour, i add cornstarch to it. it makes it nice and crisp for you. add salt in there savannah. >> a pinch. >> just a little pinch. >> okay. >> some pepper. and the rule with chicken when you're frying is chicken is wet.

add something dry. shake that up. >> good one. >> while she is doing that, we need to make the syrup. >> i serve it with sweet tea syrup. very easy. i have sugar in here. >> a lot of sugar in here. >> yes, sir. reduce it down with a little bit of tea. that's lemon juice and lemon zes. >> all of it? >> throw the zest in. >> okay. >> you cook it down and then i add in fresh thyme. >> to contrast the flavors there. >> it is so good. then you go to go into the egg wash. >> let's see if it's better. >> so the egg wash. >> get your fingers in there. >> salmonella everybody. wash your hands always. so then after you're done with the dry, you go into the wet. that's egg, cayan, drop that into the oil. >> not that one. this one. >> that right there and what i like to do is let the chicken wait and hang out so put that

>> yeah. >> serious news, i cannot believe the jerusalsey shore ta another hit. you've probably seen this video. these are pictures this morning of new jersey boardwalk in seaside park and then north in seaside heights new jersey. you recognize the names of the towns around the country because those are the exact places hit by super storm sandy. >> an iconic photo of the roller coaster in the water. >> yeah. >> right. >> that's exactly where that was. about 400 firefighters from across the state helped to fight this fire. it took hours to get under control. many of the business decembes destroyed. >> 80% destroyed. we were all there for the show. cut the ribbon to reopen the boardwalk. it's so sad. when i was watching this news break yesterday, i just couldn't believe it. you just cannot imagine that they could go through something like this yet again. >> what really hurt them was the

wind. wind with were blowing at 35 miles per hour from the south and the firefighters were saying, they were fighting these embers that were getting the fire ahead of them. so they tried cutting a break in the boardwalk that had just been built. >> right. >> they jumped back. they had to regroup and go further down the boardwalk. >> these people not only lost their businesses, hurricane sandy, but now lost them again. but many of them also have -- are still dealing with the recovery and rebuilding efforts of their homes. >> yeah. >> so for some of them, this is like three times over they had to go through this heart ache. >> remember we did that show ahead of memorial day weekend and cut the ribbons and the last boards were being placed and we were like look how fast they have come back and now they have to work to come back from this. >> and they will. the fall businesses there, it's how much can you really take? >> that's right. >> we wish them all the best and our hearts go out to everybody. it's terrible. >> and we hope they'll be back next memorial day for another reopening. there will be one. brighter news to tell you

off that building. something we're keeping tabs on this morning. also, chp officers investigating a crash that killed a pedestrians near the san jose airport overnight. chp says awe car hit a person near brokaw road just before 11:00 last night. officers say the officers stayed at the scene and is cooperating. two southbound lanes were shut done for two hours. right now it is not clear exactly what caused that crash. another crash in san jose knocked down a live poll between story road and ohala avenue. sounds like a car hit the light pole earlier this morning. the car badly damaged in the wreck. one person taken to the hospital. crews working to fix that downed light pole. we're going to take a quick break. weather and traffic right after this.

it's tyime to talk about sleep. in the classic 1950s sitcom "i love lucy" ricky and lucy were famously known to sleeping in separate beds been that was due to television standards back then and it didn't always mean bliss for them. >> could it be healthy for your relationship? here to hopefully put the subject to rest so you can get some, dr. carol ash, the director of sleep medicine at meridian health and dr. jeff garde gardere. we were talking about the number couples that sleep in separate beds. according to one study, 40%. that seems high. >> does that mean separate rooms, like lucy and ricky, what? >> separate beds, sep rad rooms. it's actually a surprising number. i would agree with both of you. there's reasons why you may not be able to sleep in the same bed with someone. there's a different temperature ideal for each of us. menstrual cycle, menopause,

pregnancy. >> snoring. >> a big one. >> and you might just be a light sleeper. you know, for people who want to sleep apart, it's okay. >> but we hear so much about the fact that there's a negative impact on your health. >> some of us don't get rest. >> how many years is this taking off my life? >> it definitely causes premature aging. it causes many diseases we hope to prevent. there's also underlying issues and sleep disorders that you don't want to ignore. >> what could it do to a relationship? because kathie and i were talking about this. >> it's a statement. >> it is a statement. both of you agree on the separate beds or separate bedrooms, then it works out. if it's only one of you who wants to do it, then of course you're going to have a partner who's upset about it. and i believe it really does

build that wedge in the relationship. and it makes it much more at risk for more issues that may eventually end up in a break-up. >> then you haven't dealt with the problem. but yet you've established a precedent. >> exactly. we see if it's only one person wants to do it, usually there's some sort of an emotional conflict in the relationship and it becomes, you know, avoidance. >> one person doesn't have any trouble sleeping. they're like, i'm fine. and the other person is the one who doesn't get any rest. i guess you have to weigh what's worse, not sleeping or harming your relationship. >> the problem is, you don't want to fall asleep on the relationship. and that's the problem because if it's about your own selfish need to get sleep and you're not really attending to the needs of the partner, then that could be a real issue. >> well, you brought a couple of items here that might solve some of the problems. >> these are some simple things you can use if you decide i don't want to sleep apart but there's still that restlessness.
