hospital. we're hearing alcohol may have played a role. that story coming up. >> i've got two more, we have the construction and changing conditions north 880 toward the bay bridge and the truck fire in sunol. we'll give you the latest there as well. >> right now allow us to take you live outside, that is the city by the bay, also known as san francisco. a beautiful look. i kind of like the morning look with the lights. glistening, dancing, feeling good about life in general on this tuesday, september 17th, this is "today in the bay." it's 5:00 straight up. good morning. thank you as all for joining us. >> in oakland it appears crews do have a handle on a fire that damaged a couple of homes. it broke out on 24th street at the intersection of market street near 980. christie smith is live at the scene.

we're hearing everyone made it out safely? >> reporter: that's what we're hearing, that's the good news. i just got an update from the battalion chief. he tells me that this fire is essentially out but firefighters still on scene checking to make sure that it stays that way. three-alarm fire that started in an old victorian t blue one at the center, about 3:30 this morning, while people were sleeping inside. and it spread to the building next door. neighbors tell me it was actually a duplex and four plex that caught fire. they saw smoke and flames pouring from the building. residents had already gotten out because the buildings were so close together, though, this quickly jumped to three alarms. one neighbor says he heard a woman screaming that she needed help. he did that, he kicked in her door and helped her out. another man who lives in the burning building just described how scary it was. >> we woke up, we heard

crackling, our neighbor was screaming, i saw like the flickering light of the flame. came out of the bedroom, out the back door there was glowing, went to the bathroom window, saw the back of the house was on fire and immediately told everybody to get out. >> reporter: the battalion chief tells me so far they have counted at least five people, residents of that blue victorian building that are displaced and one friend who was sleeping overnight. they tell me that because of the style of the building and that it's the design it made it hard to fight. it was wood. that was one of the concerns. at this point they don't know how it started and also saying the number of displaced people may go up as they start counting the second building. the red cross is here to help. live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> pretty active still.

thank you. >> we have more breaking news to tell you about. this time from san jose, a major crash on interstate 880 damaging several cars and the driver responsible nowhere to be found. marla tellez is live near 880 where the crash happened with what we're learning from investigators. >> reporter: good morning. i just spoke to chp. of the four taken to the hospital one of the drivers is being investigated for being under the influence. the question is was he actually drinking and driving. this crash happened northbound 880 near bascom avenue about 2:12 this morning. because of the accident is a jaguar, i think you should be looking at that. it's navy blue jaguar, newly purchased, purchased six days ago. officers tell me that car was heading north on 880, lost control, ended up in the middle of 880 and four more cars

crashed into him. one of those other vehicles, the driver, that is one of the drivers being investigated for being under the influence of alcohol. i can tell you the driver of the jag took off on foot. we don't have a lot of information other than it is a male. at least five people were involved in the crash, four were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, one of those now being investigated for a potential dui. i say minor injuries we're talking scrapes and bruises. chp officers are down at the hospital now interviewing these people as they get treat forward their minor injuries, then they will focus on the driver of the jaguar who is still on the run. >> thank you. i imagine the guy might be injured. that car was mashed. >> the good news is for

commuters that's all cleared up. >> that car crash cleared before the start of our show so we've had no problems with since 430 at least. looking toward 880 we had a little problem past the coliseum. they have cleared over the last 15 minutes and no major disturbance. there is a nice flow of traffic through oakland, a shot for the coliseum. indeed including the past 23rd and both smooth. 580 not a problem. as we move to the sunol area, coming up through fremont you're down to about 60. as you pass by sheridan you have one lane blocked. as crews arrived they had to block that and now waiting for a tow truck that is northbound. your commute, those are all moving smoothly.

police car. police say they noticed a suspicious vehicle near mission boulevard that happened early this morning. an officer checked the license plates and realized the car was reported stolen. when they tried to pull the car over the driver rammed the car and took off. the driver and a passenger ditched the car and they tried to run. ultimately arrested nearby. one of the offers suffers a minor injury. >> when janet napolitano takes over the uc system we will live in an east bay home that cost almost $10,000 a month. few miles away. home sitting a we'll explain why she's not living there. >> a release of a major video game and more pressure on apple.

the uc board of regents meeting to discuss a plan at the possible future home of its next president. the board taking up a request for an initial $620,000 toward the up to $6 million cost of restoring the blake house. the historic three-bedroom, seven-bath home has been empty since 2008. that could change when former homeland security secretary janet napolitano becomes president, that happen this is month. right now the university leasing her house in oakland at a cost of almost $10,000 per month. money for the renovation and current rent comes from a private endowment. >> 5:13. cisco downsizing. the company sold six buildings. it put a price tag at $150

million. the first move happens in january. it's the latest move by the company to cut cost after announcing it would lay off 4,000 employees. the buyer plans to give the buildings a major renovation to open the door for new company to move into that space. >> and speaking of downsizing, shares in apple continue to suffer. scott mcgrew, that company hasn't convinced investors. >> we'll know a lot more come friday as the new iphones go on sale. absolutely right. not much for investors to like so far. apple has not released any information on how many preorders it's getting for its apple iphone 5-c. it's available to buy for pickup or delivery on friday. to be fair, this is not a traditional apple release in that the 5-c is not the latest greater phone. it's a cheaper version of the same old phone so orders may be small. apple shares start at $450.12,

on a day the market was higher. apple down enough to pull the whole nasdaq index into negative territory. general motors says it's working on a competitor for the tesla model s, detroit's version will cost around $30,000 for a car that goes a planned 200 miles on a single charge. that's the same as tesla. most electric cars now travel less than 100 miles. tesla has opened a store in the south bay. this time next to the fremont factory itself. the store opened earlier this month as a soft launch. tesla only calling attention to it in a news release monday. if you noticed some of your younger co-workers do not show up to work today, it's probably because of this. grand theft auto 5 went on sale at midnight last night. this is the newest hottest violent video game that everyone is excited about.

around our open water bridges. today's highs, the winds are going to continue to increase. i want to show you what i'm talking about. take to the your wind futurecast. that tells the story of the day. you're getting the warm colors, that is an indication of really strong wind kickipicking up. whether we see the race go on is dependent on the wind. we expect 20-25 miles per hour wind gust. they have to stop the race if it hits 26 miles per hour sustained. and the talk is i'm hearing through the grapevine they por tensionally planning on canceling today's race. it's anybody's game right now. we're not going to find out until later. we'll be here to let you know. today's highs are going to be much cool tear the tune of 4 to 8 degrees. i'm forecasting mostly upper 70s for your inland cities so not a warm day. the winds picking up throughout the day.

that this may have been an electrical fire. they think it probably started in the laundry room of this blue victorian down there in the middle of the block. that's basically what neighbors are telling us they think happened as well. smoke and flames were coming from that area, the laundry room of the victorian overnight. residents woke up to wra crackl smoke and flames. they were able to get out as it spread to the building next door and then damaged a third building. one woman screamed she needed help getting out and a neighbor had to kick her door in. because these buildings are so close together, firefighters call forward a third alarm. firefighters say the style of the building, a victorian, made it difficult to fight. >> what makes the victorian building difficult to sfit that there are no steads, no fire blocks to block it from the floor to the ceiling. so the fire can start at the

bottom and reach the attic before we get here. when we get on scene no matter where the fire is we always send someone to the roof, to attic to see if it travelled to the attic. >> reporter: earlier firefighters told us that they thought five or six people were displaced. you no, they had a chance to talk with everyone because we were seeing quite a few people wrapped up in blankets. they are telling us now that 12 people are displaced but the red cross is here helping. firefighters tell us that they will be here for some time. again, making sure that everything stays out but it has been out for at least an hour or so. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> we're following breaking news in san jose. officers right now are on the hunt for a hit-and-run driver involved in a multicar crash in san jose. it happened on interstate 880 near bascom avenue. a man was driving a jaguar on

the freeway when he lost control and crashed. that set off a chain reaction with four others crashing into that jaguar. those drivers were taken to the hospital and officers tell us one is being investigated for dui. the driver of that jaguar ran off and is still on the run. >> 5:33. police across the bay area looking for more possible victims of the san jose man with a history of sex abuse against children. police arrested 70-year-old christopher miller earlier this month after a mother reported seeing him touch himself at a walmart. he is a register sex offend worse convictions dating back 25 years. he is not just a suspect in the mountain view case but similar ones in union city, palo alto and gilroy. his fisherman's hat, they say there may be more victims and would like anyone with information to come forward. >> there could still be more

as we head throughout day we're pushing against the threshold for that which was set, new criteria for this we're's race. it is pretty chilly. that's because we have a windchill factor. we're in the upper 50s to low 60s across the bay area. let's get right to your daypart forecast. as we head throughout the day temperatures are going to be comfortable. the low 70s inland and temperatures right around the 60s around the bay. with that windchill factor it's going to be much cooler. so, one more time we're live out here in marina green. i have a special interview coming up you won't want to miss. the ran who really knows the inside about what's going to happen today if the race does go on. it's going to be interesting whether or not it's table to. my forecast says -- we'll have to wait and find out.

tracie potts right now live in washington, d.c. this morning. she has the new details on the shooter and his mental health. good morning. >> reporter: hi, jon, good morning. the fbi tells us they will be on scene processing everything for about two days and we are learning new details about this shooter, this alleged shooter, aaron alexis. according to the associated press and law enforcement official who is have been talking to them, the veterans administration had been treating him, remember he was a former petty officer, former navy reservist so he was a military veteran and apparently the v.a. had been treating him for a number of disorders, sleep disorders, others, paranoia, there are reports he had been hearing voices according to the sources, his family had also mentioned that he had been under treatment and possibly was suffering from ptsd. here's what's interesting about that. his clearance, his access to get onto the navy yard had not been

revoked because she had not been declared mentally unfit. had he been declared mentally unfit his clearance would have been revoked. it may not have been so easy for him to walk onto the navy yard. so that's what we're learning this morning as we look into the investigation, the fbi looking from coast to coast, washington state, texas, new york, here more recently. they are trying to find out who he has been talking to, what he has been thinking about and obviously what he may have been planning. >> clearly just a tragic situation, a lot of people dead. also a list of people injured. how are those victims doing? >> reporter: a couple of them we got an update on from washington hospital center, a couple of miles from here. they had three of the victims shot including that dc police officer. he is now in fair condition after surgery. and the two other people they had are in fair and good condition including the woman

who was shot in the head miraculously we're told that she is doing very well. >> we wish them well. again, situation that continues to unfold. tracie potts very much appreciate the update. thank you. 5:43. the syrian government taking it internationally, accusing turkey now of trying to escalate tensions along the volatile border between the two countries, a turkish fighter jet shot down a syrian military helicopter on the border. the syrian military says the helicopter entered turkish air space by mistake and was simply turning around to leave when it was shot down. the turkish government says that helicopter ignored several warnings to leave. the border is a hot spot for rebel infiltration. >> the ship wrecked cruise liner off the coast of lit is again upright. this is a look at the "costa concordia" this morning. you can see the water line on the side of the ship that was submerged more than a year and a half. crews finished the pain staking

view, clear, all of the clouds blown away for the most part. there is san francisco approach on the upper deck, the lower deck. on the san francisco side we industrial a two-deck system. on the eastern span they are both at the same level. the westbound commute moving over into and out of san francisco. there is one, rincon you can see. there is a backup for the cash lanes. both sides of the fast track a good advantage as well as hov, so grab a couple of extra folks. the maps show you the east shore freeway also moves at no issue. the maze and the approach slow. the traffic and the weather systems are tied together. winds, san francisco t daily city, san mateo that's where the yellow is all over. gusty across the san mateo bridge. heading in no problems, a little slowing from 101, typical about this time of day. we're following this crash which

may have just cleared from sheridan as you head through knoll. >> breaking news a stolen vehicle crashes into a pole near coleman and meridian in almaden valley. it could be tied to a series of burglaries. marla tellez is live on the scene. what are you hearing? >> reporter: this all started as a vehicle burglary call at 408:00 this morning. this is what happened. this is the aftermath. this is a stolen chevrolet suburban here t suv here, what happened it crashed into the pole that you're looking a. you can see the pole. it obviously turns side ways and there is the content of the suv on coleman. started as vehicle dollar call. it's a confusing scene. you've been hearing about

vehicle break-ins in the area and this involved two suspects and i should mention that the suspect of this particular stolen vehicle is now in the hospital with some pretty serious injuries. >> that's correct. we received a call of trying to get in. we've had a rash out here. the responding officers noted a couple of vehicles that looked suspicious, made a u-turn, lost sight of them because they fled, and he came upon this with only one vehicle. the driver of this vehicle was taken to the hospital, we don't know how serious the injuries are yet. but the vehicle was not reported stolen at the moment. the registered owner did not know it was stolen at the time but now we found out it was stolen. >> that's one suspect in the hospital. the other is still on the run. >> we're trying to figure out if we've got a description of the
