>> reporter: and i'm meteorologist christina loren live from marina green where fierce wind may force america's cup race, the big race, to actually be postponed for today. i've got that and your roller coaster weather ride coming up. >> we've got the roller coaster commute, getting started with folks waiting at the bay bridge toll plaza. an update for the truck fire in sunol and we'll look at the issues in san jose. >> we fire up the live camera for a picturesque look over san francisco. a nice way to get your day started. day two of the work week, tuesday, september 17, this is "today in the bay." 6:00, good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning. we have breaking news to tell you about, oakland, 12 people had to race out of their homes

after three residential buildings caught fire. crews there right now on scene at those buildings located on 24th street at the intersection of market street near interstate 980. that is where christie smith is live on scene. right now good news, you hear everybody did make it out safely. >> reporter: yes, that's the good news in all of this. everyone made it out safely. the fire is out, firefighters are doing overhaul. we've seen them taking out burned furniture, burned couches, just to make sure nothing flares up. they have pg&e out here as well. this fire really scary for the people inside this building. the blue one in the middle on the left. these people were sleeping when the fire started around 3:30. they saw smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building. heard crackling and had to run out with the clothes on their backs. now the main building that caught fire, that's a duplex on 24th and market. we could see the smoke all the

way from the freeway on the way over. firefighters called a third alarm as it spread quickly damaging two other buildings. one neighbor told us he was watching tv when he heard a woman screaming so he ran to help. >> i ran outside while this lady was screaming help, i dialed 911, i ran over, she is out her window screaming i can't get out my door's locked from the inside so i ran up there while i'm on the phone with 911 telling them the cross street, 24 to market. kicking down her door from the outside. my friend kenny, he came and helped me. we got her out. >> reporter: firefighters believe that this was an electrical fire that may have started in the laundry room downstairs, that's what neighbors tell us too. the people who had to run out that's where they saw most of the smoke and flames. no injuries, that's the good news, 12 people displaced but the red cross is out here

helping them. 50 firefighters in all. i was told the damage estimates for this about 500,000 to $800,000. reporting live in oakland, christie smith. >> we have breaking news in san jose. a stolen suv crashed sending the driver to the hospital. marla tellez is live at the scene. >> reporter: good morning. i spoke to the lieutenant and he tells me that there are at least three vehicle burglary victims in this case and also one vehicle, stolen vehicle victim. that stolen vehicle is this here, the chevy suv. it hitãthe light pole. you can see the light pole is dented and this is the aftermath. it was driven at the time by a suspect in this case described only as a male in his 20s.

this is almaden valley, after 4:00 this morning this suspect, young man, is now in the hospital with3úe÷ upper body injuries. that's all that officers are telling us. we don't know the extent of his injuries. basically just to break this down, gets a little convoluted. police tell me that basically the suspect was without at least one other puddy taking part in vehicle burglaries called it in. they obviously caught this suspect because once he is released from the hospital he will be arrested but his buddy at least one other person is still on the run. at this point pd is not releasing information about this other suspect who remains at large. all they know is that they can tell us that some vehicle break-ins have been happening in this area in a 1 1/2 to 2-mile

radius. they have happened the last couple of weeks. this is nothing new for this area. unfortunately at this point coleman is shut down. in the eastbound direction. westbound between meridian and sentinel it is open at this point. it's all about under way after 4:00 this morning and one vehicle burglary suspect is still on the run. no details about that person to report at this time. live in sanjose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, marla. we're also following another overnight breaking news storien san jose. officers on the hunt for a hit-and-run driver involved 18 multi-car crash in san jose. that happened this morning an 880 near bascom avenue a. man was driving a jaguar on the freeway when he lost control and crashed. that set off a chain reaction. officers tell us one of them is

being investigated for driving under the influence. the driver of the jaguar ran off and is still on the run. >> we have new video of a hayward police car rammed by a driver as he tried to escape from offers. they noticed a stolen vehicle early this morning but when offers tried to pull it over the driver rammed the vehicle and took off. the driver and a passenger ditched the car, they tried to run. they ultimately were arrested. one of the officers we can tell you about suffer a minor injury while trying to catch one of those suspects. >> investigators are trying to figure out why a man went on a shooting rage, killing 12 people. >> u.s. law enforcement officials there are telling the associated press 34-year-old aaron alexis has been suffering from several mental issues including paranoia and also a

sleep disorder. >> we have new video to show you of investigators searching the hotel where the suspect was staying. alexis was at the apartment along with five civilian contractors during a business trip. >> investigators tell us alexis was a defense contract employee and former savy reservist. washington, d.c.'s police chief says investigators, they are continsed alexis did act alone. they are building a profile of alex alexis. he is known to have fits of rage. he did have prior run-ins with the law. one incident for shooting out the tires of another man's honda, the other was in ft. worth, texas a gun he was sleening went off accidentally at thinks hospital.

the top stories, 12 people forced to race out of their home this is morning after three residential buildings caught fire in oakland. the cause of this one under investigation right now but fire officials tell us they believe the cause may have been electrical. >> a driver is on the run in san jose after causing a chain reaction crash on 880. the chp says the driver wrecked a blue jaguar, then four other drivers crashed into the car. officers are looking for the driver of the jaguar. >> in hayward a driver now under arrest for allegedly ramming his car into a police car. police say the suspect was driving a stolen car but when they tried to stop him, the driver then rammed a police cruiser and took off. police did catch up with the driver and a passenger.

6:16. time to check out the traffic. mike's always watching the roads. >> good morning. looking toward fremont we can figure this out by looking at the lights. more traffic. traffic close to the limit here southbound the commute direction. northbound fast truck scales. that's a good stretch. we'll take you out to the roadways and see how things are shaping up. we're looking forward the westbound commute as you come out of the altamont pass. 205 things bottle neck up. around grant road, to the 680 interchange you are averaging about 30 miles per hour. the reason is very slow here. look at lots of light, same situation for our sensors. all of that slowing, then things even out. by the time you get to the dublin interchange things are starting to build because of all of the folks westbound for 580 out of that altamontp pass. 84 slowing.

this morning authorities believe aaron alexis was likely the lon shooter, as a contractor he had legitimate access to the navy yard. what they don't know is why this happened. >> we don't know what the motive is. >> fbi may be on site another two days. >> we continue to work to determine where he has been, who he has talked to and what he has done. >> they are getting warrants to search, backtracking alexis' routes. in texas, washington state and in new york where relatives are stunned. >> no one saw it coming. all it is is just shocking. >> reporter: in d.c. the wounded will recover, the emotional wound for 20,000 workers affected may take longer. >> we're proud.

>> reporter: not by much. good morning to you, laura and jon, and you atym home. to give you an indication what if the winds are doing i want to draw your attention to the golden gate bridge. it's slowly starting to roll in. yesterday morning plenty of fog. this morning the wind with an area of low pressure moving through is good news. we don't have a lot of reduced visibility. we'll see a lot of pressure. what that weak disturbance means temperatures are going to be much cooler for today and it's thep timing of when that comes through, that's going to dictate whether or not this wind will force this race to be postponed. that's what we're looking for. current temperatures, in the 50s and 60s. wind speeds pretty strong. i'm timing this to come through between about 12 and 2:00.

victorian and spread from there. started at around 3:30 this morning. they say it was a duplex and a four-plex that burned. they smelled smoke coming from a laundry room in the rear and heard crackling sounds. we could see smoke and flames. you could see the smoke from the freeway. this victorian building. because they were so close together, firefighters say they quickly called in a third alarm. one neighbor was watching tv when he heard what he thought was gun fire, it was popping sounds from the fire. he heard a woman screaming she was trapped but he ran to kick the door in. >> my friend kenny, he came and helped. she's screaming running down the stairs. kenny says my house is on fire, my cats are up there. we ran up to his place, come to find out it's just like engulfed and i almost blacked out. i fell down the stairs. >> reporter: he says he was shaken up but okay.

from a south bay hospital. the suspect was driving this crashed chevy suburban. turned to its side. he had stolen this from the surrounding almaden valley neighborhood. this is all happening near coleman and meridian. they got a call from someone who had a car broken into. officers came out here, they saw two suspicious vehicles and that's when they happened been this crashed suburban. it crashed into a light pole. i think you're looking at that now. i mentioned the suspect is in the hospital with ser just injuries. the lieutenant telling me all we can go off of he is a young man in his 20s. they had a rash of vehicle break-ins. this morning alone he says at least three people had their vehicles broken into and now officers are talking to witnesses. >> they are canvassing and trying to determine how many other victims we may have. >> registered owner of this

hospital suffering minor injuries. one of them right now is being investigated for dui. the driver of the jaguar ran off and is stilling pursued by police. >> new video to show you of a hayward police car rammed by a driver overnight as he tried to escape from officers. police say they noticed the stolen vehicle near mission boulevard and industrial parkway early this morning. but when officers tried to pull it over the driver rammed the car and took off. the driver and a passenger ditched the car and tried to run. they were arrested nearby. one officer suffered minor injury trying to catch one of the suspects. police all over the bay area looking for more possible victims of the san jose man with a decades long history of sex abuse against children. police arrested 70-year-old christopher miller earlier this month after a mother reported seeing him touch himself at a walmart.

he is a registered sex offender p(i 25 years. police say he's not just a suspect in the mountain view case but similar ones in other cities. police linked miller because of his look, a floppy fisherman's hat. there may be more victims and _c they would like anyone with information to come forward. >> when the sun goes down in one neighborhood it will be in the dark all over again. more than a dozen street lights on stallion way near king and jose have beenen street lights out since late may and the neighbors say they have called the city dozens of times and they usually get a recording telling them because of copper wire theft and lack of resources their lights may be out for some time. >> it's very scary especially for the kids and also we come home late at night and then i don't think it's right because rest of the county. >> neighbors also telling us the crime has gone up since these

lights went out. won woman telling us somebody stole gas. >> see how things are moving on this tuesday morning. how is it looking? >> pretty good. this is traffic tuesday. we expect a heavy volume, we've seen that over the course of the morning, not a lot but we now see that build kicking in. look at this. north 85, north 87, 101 and 280 all showing the orange where the speeds come down in the 50s through those sections. no big surprises. we were talking about marla, coleman closed. so avoid that area. blossom hill to the north so if you use these neighborhood streets over to meridian, because of that crash and the police investigation that marla continues to follow. here toward the east bay we're slowing, south 880 down off of 238 down past the san mateo

bridge and down toward fremont and union city. this is a build also off the castro valley y. a smooth flow along the peninsula to the dumbarton bridge, san mateo bridge, not a big issue as far as the volume. watch may be gusty conditions here, and look at the maps here we see it painted yellow. talking about the high wind, may be a case over the hills here san francisco, daily city, south we're talking about so hold on tight but no big issues as far as chp. we'll look outside and see how things are shaping up across the golden gate bridge. the winds clearly there are low clouds across the north bay. no problems as far as visibility and in fact, the flag calmed down. changing conditions. we'll give you a look at the bay bridge. there is an issue now, westbound deck is moving smoothly but look at that, just slowed down the last few minutes and we have reports that there may be a bus that is stalled in side that treasure island tunnel. westbound from oakland into san francisco.

flags which are getting that prevailing westerly wind. the wind is going to pick up. it depends on the timing of this disturbance. as to when we are going to see those changes. i kind of want to show you what the wind does to the san francisco bay. in addition to the wind making it nice and choppy, we also have some very erratic current. so current and winds combined are going to dictate whether or not that race can go on. we are pushing up against that threshold later on today. as we head throughout the day it's going to be nice, comfortable, just about every weather. a pretty place we livenof in. spectacular this morning. the mountains holding off the fog in marin county. we're going to see a little coastal fog. not much. what's happening is the wind picks up. you need clear skies and calm winds for the fog to develop. this morning winds are gusty, in fact, we're used to seeing quite a bit of wind at the coast but today, 10 to 15 miles per hour stronger than usual.

and as we head throughout day your future cast tells the story. we're going to see the winds pick up as we head throughout the day, the reds show you where that wind is going to be the most fierce and that's right at the immediate coast. meanwhile, highs look good, if you are coming out to america's cup, temperatures in the mid-60s, make sure you are prepared for an awesome day of racing because that wind will make it more exciting. as we head throughout the day across the rest of the bay area, talking upper 70s inland, plenty of 60s around the bay. and low 60s today at the coast. seven-day outlook, temperatures starting to drop off as we head throughout day, then we climb right back up as we head through tomorrow. so taking you on a roller coaster ride, what that means for us is we're keeping the chance of showers going. this is the last week of summer, feeling like fall, going right back to summer. we're going to finish off the week that way. the best chance for showers look likes saturday into sunday. but we're having a pretty good time.
