studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everyone, welcome to "today" on this tuesday. i'm savannah guthrie. >> i'm matt lauer along side al roker and tamron hall. did we do something with the set? did i miss something? >> we changed something. >> sorry i missed the house warming party but it looks good. >> it looks good. we are excited. >> good. we are going to start in washington at the scene of the deadly shooting at the navy yard. after conflicting reports on monday, confusing information, investigators now believe the gunman acted alone. natalie morales is there with the latest. natalie, good morning to you. >> good morning to you, matt. we are starting to learn more about the alleged gunman and possibly aa motive here. according to officials, the man identified as the alleged shooter, 34-year-old aaron alexis had been experiencing mental problems and had a checkered past. he was a computer contractor, a former navy reservist who was

honorably discharged in 2011. alexis did have a valid pass to enter this navy yard though not a pass that would have allowed him to enter building 197. police say that is where he shot the security guard and then shot his way into that building where he then proceeded to carry out his attack. killing 12 people and injuring many more. morning turned into mayhem as a gunman opened fire. >> male with a shotgun, multiples shots fired, multiple people down. >> reporter: eyewitnesses say the shooter took up a position on the fourth floor overlooking a wide open atrium at the center of the building. from there he reportedly opened fire with an automatic weapon on the food court on the ground floor and on the third floor balcony. witnesses say he also shot a man on the fourth floor at point blank range. patricia ward was in the food court. >> it was three gunshots straight in a row.

pop, pop, pop. three seconds later it was pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. so a total of seven gunshots. >> reporter: the navy commander was warned by a perfect stranger. >> an individual came from the building behind us, the maintenance building was talking to me and saying there's a shooter in your building and then i heard two more shots. one of them hit him. he went down in front of me and i took off from there. >> reporter: police tactical units were on the scene in minutes and after a series of gun battles, the suspect was shot and killed. he's been identified as 34-year-old aaron alexis. a former navy reservist who most recently worked as a subcontractor for hewlett-packard. president obama was briefed on the shooting calling it a cowardly act. he saluted the men and women at the navy yard. >> they're patriots and they know the dangers of serving

abroad but today they face the unimaginable violence that they wouldn't have expected here at home. >> reporter: today the navy yard is open, though only for essential personnel. and building 197 behind me is still an active crime scene. we're starting to learn more now about the 12 victims who range in age from 46 to 73. metropolitan police continue the difficult process of notifying their families. meantime, defense secretary chuck hagel along with the chairman and vice chairman of the joint chiefs are laying a wreath this morning at the navy memorial in tribute to the victims. >> natalie, thank you so much. we're learning more today about the gunman as investigators search for a possible motive. pete williams is covering that part of the story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. officials say the picture emerging this morning is of a man with a navy past who had a history of psychiatric problems and was apparently deteriorating

rapidly. >> reporter: authorities say all the shots were fired by one man. aaron alexis, age 34. a former navy reserve electronics specialist from ft. worth, texas. >> we do now feel comfortable that we have the single and sole personal responsible for the loss of life. >> reporter: just last week, investigators say, he bought a shotgun from a dealer in virginia, about 20 miles south of washington. they say he was part of a team of civilian subcontractors that checked into this washington hotel near the navy yard to work on a military computer project. >> he had legitimate access to the navy yard as a result of his work as a contractor and he utilized a valid pass to gain entry to the navy yard. >> reporter: alexis was born in new york city where he still has family. his brother-in-law in brooklyn says the family is in shock. >> no one ever mentioned anything about him being aggressive or being this type of way or anything like that. >> reporter: the owner of a thai

restaurant in fort worth, texas described alexis as a peaceful practicing buddhist but another friend says alexis was a devoted player of violent video games. >> i would say that's what we joked about, him being obsessed about those video games at his age. >> reporter: a ft. worth police report says he was arrested three years ago for firing a bullet that went into the apartment above his. he claimed he was cleaning his gun. police in seattle say nine years ago he shot the tires of a car used by workers that parked near his house and police said he did it during a blackout fueled by anger. police say alexis father told them at the time his son had anger management problems since helping rescue people in new york on 9/11. in recent years, authorities say, he's undergone a series of treatments at v.a. hospitals for psychiatric problems. investigators say they believe alexis came to the navy yard armed only with a shotgun, then picked up two other weapons as

he began the shooting spree taking one of them from a police officer that he shot. savannah? >> pete williams, thank you. we want to turn to bill bratton, the former police commissioner of boston and new york city and served as chief of police as well. good morning to you. what are our investigators doing now. here we have a shooter that was killed but what is the primary work they're doing today? >> the idea is to try to, as best as possible, sequential idea of what happened, where did he get the guns? where did he have the guns? that's still pretty much unknown. they're certainly in the process of attempting to find next of kin. there are multiple investigations going on at this juncture. >> we're learning a few more details about this gunman. does he fit a certain profile? >> in some respects he reminds me of christopher donner. the former los angeles police officer who also as a result of a reversal in his military career, that was the spark that set him off.

what we're seeing is an increase in the number of these incidents, the availability of firearms and the number of them are increasing, the pace of them, if you will. >> it's difficult to think about but you're one that says we should be more prepared for mass shootings like this. this is part of the new normal. what does that mean? how does one prepare for it? >> yesterday, a number of the individuals that fled the scene indicated that they had gone through training for active shooter. the idea of flee, hide, fight, if necessary. so that's a good thing. showing the level of preparedness, at least at that federal facility, has been raised. it's an unfortunate aspect of american life today that you have to go through that type of training. he probably helped to save some lives yesterday. >> you look at the actions of the police officers that responded. i'm always blown away by their bravery in these incredibly dangerous circumstances. >> right. the circumstances yesterday, you had city police, park police, a park police officer you would normally not expect to end up in the middle of a gun fight in a

building with a man armed with an assault rifle. no, the heroism displayed by police. this comes out of the columbine shooting where police don't wait outside any more. they go in. that's why so many of them have assault weapons in their own vehicles because they were taking on a man yesterday with an assault weapon. >> it's good to get your perspective. thank you so much. now, here's matt. >> thank you, another major story we're covering this morning. the devastating floods in colorado. the death toll has risen to at least eight people. the latest victim, unfortunately, an 83-year-old man. the number of missing is dropping down to 640 people. the community of jamestown has been inaccessible for more than a week. miguel almaguer and his crew made the difficult trek in, the final stretch on foot to reach the people there. he's with us now from boulder. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: getting into

jamestown is treacherous. the air national guard, when air lifting individuals out, said this was their best and last chance to get out. all public roads leading into the community are shut down which should be about a 20 minute drive, took us well over 3 hours. >> reporter: winding through colorado's front range, the journey to jamestown ends in a road to nowhere. to reach a community literally cut off from the world, the only way in it is on foot. and once you're here, it's clear why so many have left. returning home for the first time monday, chad was among those air lifted out by the national guard. >> you left. >> you got on one of those chinooks out. >> yes. >> why did you think so many people stayed behind? >> mostly because they didn't want to leave their houses. they didn't want to leave and have their house gone. >> reporter: the mayor is one of 40 who remained behind. for a week she lived without power or running water. neither will likely be restored until the roads are.

>> from the beginning of town to the end of town, just devastated. >> reporter: a third of jamestown has been washed away. the james creek which fills this otherwise silent city with noise, now cuts the town in half. what homes it didn't swallow, it now divides. >> the full impact is finally coming in. >> reporter: during the storm, ann watch the her neighbor's homes float away. she lost her friend, killed in a mudslide. >> we haven't even had a chance to grieve our friend. we've been dealing with survival. >> reporter: this morning, the remote mountain communities like jamestown are literally teetering on the edge. but even in a sea of destruction, they find hope and resolve. >> how does your community rebuild? >> i don't know how but i know they will. there's a lot of spirit here. >> with the national guard air dropping supplies into communities like jamestown, we

did see power crews and energy companies trying to make their way in. it is certainly going to take months to rebuild those communities. matt and savannah, back to you. >> all right. miguel almaguer has been covering that story for more than a week now. thank you very much. we turn to what is called the perfect end to an unprecedented fe engineering, the raising of the wrecked "costa concordia" cruise liner off the coast of italy. michelle is there again for us this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. what a sight that is. people here in awe to see the "costa concordia" pulled upright. struggling for words to describe that damage that's right in there saying it looked like a giant had put it's fist into it or someone had thrown an enormous ball right into its side. it took nearly two years but this is what it looked like to finally raise the "concordia" over close to 20 hours.

>> amazing feeling when you see the ship come up. >> reporter: celebration broke out in the middle of the night on this tiny island that had waited so long. >> we were expecting it to be harder to tear it off. it came off quite nicely. >> reporter: it was slow going to start. a few delays. but once they pulled the ship up to the point where they could pump water into these enormous boxes along the side, that force took over, speeding up the process. now resting upright, looking like a ghost ship, a reminder, too, of the terror and loss of life that night. but now, at last, it can be moved away. is there still an element of, i can't believe we pulled this off? >> yeah, i think so. i mean, there always is that. i mean, you always have these fears. we didn't expect perfection but that's what we got. >> reporter: so, next, salvagers will chain big floats to this side of the ship. they don't have to weld them on. and it will take about several more months before they can tow

the ship out of here. yesterday, one of the survivors described the wreck as a monument to stupidity but this salvage operation has been a testament to what engineering can do. by the way, the cost of the salvage operation so far, alone, more than $800 million. back to you guys. >> all right, michelle kosinski, thank you so much. how happy will they be when the coastline is once again free. >> i agree. that is astonishing that they managed to do that. to right that ship. tamron is here and you have bad news for drivers. >> not good, guys. good morning, everyone. an expensive milestone this morning. gas prices today average $3.51 for a gallon of regular. that makes 1,000 days in a row that gas has been over $3 a gallon. that's never happened before, by the way, and aaa is predicted that prices above $3 a gallon are here to stay. new details this morning in the weekend shooting of an unarmed college student in charlotte, north carolina.

the police officer accused of shooting him ten times goes to court today. the officer, randall kerik, is charged with voluntary manslaughter. police say the victim, jonathan ferrell crashed his car over the weekend and knocked on the door of a nearby home for help. well, the woman inside thought he was a burglar and called 911. police say ferrell ran toward them and the officer opened fire. ferrell's mother says she forgives the officer. today the attorney for jerry sandusky is trying to get his client's child molestation conviction overturned. he is arguing that the defense did not have enough time to prepare. sandusky is serving 30 to 60 years behind bars after being convicted last year. a homeless man who returned a backpack filled with $40,000 in cash and travelers checks was honored by boston police monday for his honesty. glenn james found that money at a mall on saturday and then flagged down officers to hand it right over.

it belonged to a mall employee. a fund has been started to help james pay for medical care and other needs. grueling training for prince harry. he spent the night in a giant freezer -- take a look -- that simulated the conditions he will face this winter when he goes to the north pole for a good cause, it's a race with wounded veterans. when asked about the worst part of sleeping in a freezer? he said, going in. i'd say, it's cold. >> i'd say that outfit, that furry hood thing. >> i know harry is a cool guy but that homeless man that turned over $40,000, come on. >> can we go back to the question of which mall employee had a backpack with $40,000. >> that mall employee was carrying the money for the store. i used to work for the jewelry store and we would carry the jewelry, carry the cash. >> it was money and travelers checks i read. >> i don't know. >> harry went to the south pole i'm told by the way. >> all kinds of updates there. >> with $50,000 in his backpack

and the royal jewels. and he had a crown. it was fantastic. >> look at you standing here. what have you got? >> i'm going to walk over here. we've got -- if you felt we had a nip in the air here in the northeast, you are absolutely correct. stretching from minnesota all the way to new england, freeze warnings and frost advisories in effect. look at some of these temperatures right now. in fact, boston saw a temperature to this morning. right now it's at 44 degrees. that is a record for them. in fact, we're going to see temperatures warm up nicely today but only -- look at this, sayre knack lake, 61. boston 63. new york city 68. harrisburg will see a temperature of 69 degrees. the rest of the country, showers in the pacific northwest. our friends in colorado will finally see some drying out. 85 degrees and sunshine today. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

over the last 24 hours a lot of action on social media dealing with, of course, that shooting in washington. let's go over to carson. he's in the orange room and can bring us up to date. carson, good morning. >> good morning, matt. good morning everybody. monday morning in the midst of the confusion and the lack of information surrounding the navy yard massacre. the news first spread on all the social sites. let's take a walk through it. we first learned from an official u.s. navy tweet that three shots were fired. here it is there. u.s. navy confirms three shots fired 8:20 a.m. building 197. there's the first one there. then we saw a instagram picture of soldiers that gave us a clear imagine as to the severity there in d.c. with a pretty heavy first responder, military scene. then a vine video went out which was remarkable to get this imagine all before 10:30 eastern time. speculation as to why reagan international was closed. there you have it. military needed to get in there to do their job.

you can see the first responders there acting as well. again, all of this stuff, quick news happening in a short amount of time. there were also imagines of touching and heroic rescues. we saw a worker leading his blind colleague to safety. which was a bright spot in an otherwise dark day. omar joins us on the phone. omar, how are you? >> good morning. >> it's nice to have you. just describe the scene, if you could, while you were there at work. >> i heard the first two shots while i was in the atrium near the cafeteria where i saw my blind colleague, also. after we heard the first two shots, we were wondering where the noise came from because, you know, sound echos and travels there in the atrium area that goes from the first floor of the building up to the fifth floor. i proceeded to take his arm and lead him into the cafeteria while people started wondering if they also heard gunshots.

we heard three more shots while we were inside the cafeteria and then we saw the alarms go off to evacuate the building. as soon as we got outside the cafeteria doors into the hallway, we saw people panic, running, for the exits. and they were shouting. i could not make out exactly what they were shouting but i knew it was something serious. i told my colleague that we were going to get out of the building and i was going to help him because normally he's got somebody with him there and this morning he was all by himself. >> well, a remarkable act mr. grant. so many people hearing shots would have run for the exit. you went right to your coworker in need. it was a much needed bright spot in an image we saw yesterday in the social space. thank you. you didn't have to be on this call this morning. we found you. thank you, sir, we appreciate it. and all the best to you. >> thank you. >> back to you guys, thank you. >> so many imagines. so many tweets. so much information. and so much confusing

7:30 now on a tuesday morning. it's the 17th day of september, you're looking at flags being flown at half-staff today at the white house, at the capitol building. in many places all across the nation. that, of course, in honor of the 12 victims of the navy yard shooting on monday. natalie is in washington. she'll have more on the investigation in just a couple of minutes. good morning, everyone. i'm matt lauer with savannah guthrie al roker and tamron hall. >> terrible to see that in the heart of washington. we'll have the latest in a moment. we'll also get you more on the stories in the headlines today. a new wave of rescue operations under way in flood-ravaged colorado where more than 600 people remain unaccounted for at

this hour. by the way, mexico dealing with some of the worst flooding there in decades. some 30,000 people have been forced to evacuate. more on that story coming up as well. and the wrecked "costa concordia" is upright for the first time since it capsized off the italian coast 20 months ago. >> what an amazing feat of engineering. >> incredible. and coming up, something to think about on your next flight, or not think about, are pilots relying too much on auto pilot? we are here at the main gate of the u.s. navy, the facility is open today. though only for essential personnel. behind me is building 197, that is where the shooting took place. around this time in the morning it all started to break out

yesterday morning. we are learning more about the victims as well as the shooter this morning. what we still do not know, the motive behind the shooting. we know that he was 34-year-old aaron alexis, a former navy reservist. 13 people were killed in this attack including the shooter. now d.c. metropolitan police are starting to begin the difficult process of notifying the families. we know they range in age, from the ages of 46 to 73. both civilian and military personnel included. there was a candle light vigil last night held at freedom plaza to honor those victims and we are starting to hear more about their stories. among those killed, a grandfather of nine, 51-year-old arthur daniels. he was a subcontractor for a furniture repair company here. and witnesses say that daniel spotted the gunman running down the hallway. he and a colleague ran. they ran to the elevator and

frantically pushed the elevator button when he was shot by the alleged gunman. michael arnold also an annapolis graduate and naval supply officer for 29 years. another woman, sylvia frasier, 53 was a network security administrator with the naval sea systems command and her family was frantically trooing to await word on her whereabouts. kathy gaarde, a 62-year-old that lived with her husband and her children. we're starting to hear more about the stories of the victims here matt and such an enormous tragedy. this facility takes care of the nation and security of some of the most important secrets and security of our nation and so, once again, a tragedy here scarring our nation, matt. >> natalie, thank you very much. dr. janice orlovsky is the chief medical officer at medstar washington hospital center where three of the survivors were treated. as we mentioned earlier, during eye news conference she made an

empassioned plea to end gun violence. doctor, good morning, good to see you. >> good morning, matt. how are you today? >> i'm doing well. i want to talk about your comments in a second but i want an update on some of the patients you treated. first of all, you had a police officer there with severe leg wounds. i know he has been through surgery. what is his prognosis? >> his prognosis is good. i would tell you that his condition today is fair. i've had a chance to see him. he is doing well, as expected, he is having pain around the lower legs. but in general, he is doing very well. i will tell you his spirits are excellent. >> there were two other patients brought to you, two women. one was shot in the shoulder. the other was shot in the head and miraculously the bullet did not penetrate her skull. where exactly was she shot and how is she doing? >> my understanding or at least what you can tell is she was shot in the finger and then right behind her right ear.

so the bullet went into her scalp at that point, you can actually see a little bit of a divet and it did not enter the skull. she is doing well and anxious about her colleagues. they have not been clear as to how everyone is doing. so i would say that's her greatest concern today and quite frankly her greatest concern is to be able to go home with her family. >> i want to ask you about comments you made during that press conference. you're getting a lot of attention for this. you said something is wrong in this country. there's something evil in our society that we as americans have to work to try and eradicate. you went on and said we have to work together to get rid of it. i'd like you to put my trauma center out of business. i would like not to be an expert on gunshots. did you step in front of the cameras planning to say that or was it spontaneous? >> it was a completely spontaneous comment. one of the reporters asked me, i know that medstar deals with a

lot of gunshot victims. she said, is there something different about this. my first thought was no, there's nothing different. it's terrible, it's horrific. it's a senseless injury that we deal with and as i spoke to the camera, i have to say it was direct from my heart and i meant every word of it and i must have poked the underbelly because i've gotten quite a few comments and phone calls and e-mails and tweets about it. it wasn't planned. it wasn't something that i had intended to say. >> and you said you didn't want to wade into the issue of gun control and yet your comments are resinating with people and we also heard emotional comments after newtown and aurora. et cetera, et cetera. are you worried your comments will be soon forgotten as it seems some of the other comments have been forgotten? >> am i worried? absolutely. what are we going to do as an american people to take care of this? let's stop this now.

>> your comments getting an awful lot of attention. most importantly take good care of those picture who were victims of this shooting, doctor. >> absolutely, we will. and i also want to say, my sympathies to those who are not going to be with their families and my sympathy to the families who will have to deal with the death of loved ones. thank you. >> dr. janis orlovsky. doctor, thanks. a lot of reaction online to what she had to say in the news conference. we get a check of the forecast. >> that's right. we've been talking about this flooding in mexico. we've been dealing with flooding in colorado. in mexico, it is, again, of biblical proportions as well as the remnants of two different storms, manuel on the pacific coast and inagreed on the east coast caused big, big problems. let's look at right now. you can see all this rain, 33 people have lost their lives. mudslides, massive flooding. they'll be cleaning up for

months in the tropics there. heres what's going on in the tropics. things have been getting on the active side. we are looking at showers and thunderstorms now right on into ingrid. this -- also this area here, this is another area in the area in the yucatan we are watching as well. we have humberto. it is a hurricane again. as we move on a little bit closer to home, we are looking at a lot of wet weather that's going to be pushing its way down into florida. it has been just inundated. florida has been inundated with heavy rain over the last year. in fact, we expect to see more showers, more thunderstorms. in fact, look at miami. miami has picked up 48 inches of rain, that's 17 inches above normal, tampa almost 46 inches of rain, 8 inches above normal. >> good morning to you. i'm meteorologist christina loren. well, we do actually have some light rain in our forecast as

the terrible shooting at washington d.c. at the naval yard there and the gunman who police are now saying did act alone. natalie is there and covering the story at the nation's capitol good morning to you. >> good morning to you guys. it was around this time yesterday morning when the alleged shooter enter the naval yard here. he has been identified as 34-year-old aaron alexis, a computer contractor that also served four years in the navy reserves. he was given a general discharge in 2011, though it is still unclear why he was discharged. there's some reports, though, one navy official said he had incidents of misconduct in his past. but it was around 8:20 yesterday morning when we started getting word, alexis was armed with a shotgun and then proceeded to carry out this rampage where he picked up two other weapons in the process. he took position on the fourth floor of building 197 and then proceeded to shoot into the atrium, into the food court

in many communities, receding flood waters revealed damages or destroyed homes and cars buried in mud. a desperate search is underway for a girl kidnapped during a home invasion during atlanta georgia. police believe the 14-year-old is in extreme danger. two gunmen broke into her family's home, shot the dog, and demanded cash and jewelry from her mother and took the girl. she was last seen wearing star wars pajamas and a super hero shirt. police say the suspects were driving a grey dodge. a fire rescue caught on tape saved the life of a new york city man. he was actually, look at this, dangling from the window of a burning apartment, apparently desperate enough he was willing to jump but building workers reached out to him with a ladder and one of the workers even walked across to pull that man, you see it there, to safety.

was concussed out of football. he suffered concussions. >> yes. >> the main character in this, the 14-year-old also suffers a concussion so clearly this is a subject that's been in the news a lot lately with the nfl. is that something you wanted to dive into? >> yeah, the dad says we didn't know any better. i never thought the league was looking the other way. just more information has come in and now they realize what a serious problem it is. but the moment in the book when the younger brother realizes how much his dad loves him is when he comes to after taking the hard hit and it's not his coach he sees, it's not his trainer, it's his dad and in that moment there's a bond that existed. >> which will lead me to a real life question because the nfl just reached an agreement on lawsuits brought by former players, $765 million in a settlement to pay for these players that had these concussions or head injuries. do you think it's a fair settlement? >> i do. i think it's a fair settlement,

well, of course as we were coming on the air yesterday, this whole tragedy was beginning to unfold and we're now learning more about possibly the motive behind the shooting here and more about the alleged gunman. we know he is 34-year-old aaron alexis and according to officials, they say that he had been experiencing mental health problems including paranoia and hearing voices. his parents told investigators he was being treated at the va but was not declared mentally unfit by the navy. he was former naval reserve. he served in the military for four years and in 2011 was discharged. it was a general discharge. no specific reason given at the time. though one military official, according to some reports, did say that there was a pattern of misconduct in his past. meanwhile, more on what happened here yesterday morning, of

course as the scene started to unfold. the alleged gunman arrived here using a valid pass, entered this facility. he was a contractor, a computer contractor and he was armed with a shotgun. he proceeded to pick up two other weapons during the rampage. he shot and killed 12 people before police then shot him. several other people were injured as well. and some of them being treated. fortunately, today, we're hearing their conditions have been upgraded. guys. >> all right, natalie. >> that's really -- natalie, is there any indication -- if you have a pass, do you still have to pass through a metal detector or any security or is it a free pass if you have i.d.? >> from what i understand that's more of a random process. most people that enter a military facility have an i.d. card. if you're a department of defense personnel, you have a d.o.d. id card which would allow
