>> good morning. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> i'm savannah guthrie along side al roker and tamron hall who is sitting in for natalie. actually i think natalie is waiting for the new iphone. >> i passed it this morning on my bike. >> 5th avenue? >> yeah, crazy stuff. >> people have been lining up for a day waiting to get in. they are open, but they have not started selling the phones yet. we will have more on that coming up. >> also, amanda knox is here for an exclusive interview. she is outside the studio right now. we want to ask a question about the interview. >> if you were amanda would you return to italy for another trial? you can get into this conversation on our facebook page. we'll talk to amanda live in a few minutes. >> but first, more violence in chicago. 13 people wounded after another mass shooting. one of the victims a 3-year-old. john yang is in chicago. john, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt.

very violent night overnight in chicago on the south side. 13 people were shot. the most seriously shot was a 3-year-old boy, shot in the head. he's in critical condition in the hospital right now. incidentally, that little boy's uncle was one of the victims of a state of violence over labor day here in chicago. the other victims in that shooting, in that park shooting on the south side, their injuries do not appear to be life threatening. many have already been treated and released from the hospital. police very tight lipped. they do say it appears to be gang related and believe it or not, it was only one of a number of incidents overnight. in all, overnight in chicago there were 23 people wounded. two of them fatally. so this is a very violent night in chicago. ironically it comes at a time when police officials have been touting the murder rate and shooting rate is actually coming

down. murder down 32% and shooting down 22% and murders on track to be the lowest since the 1960s but a very violent night, matt. >> john, thank you very much. now to washington and here we go again. another government shut down show down is brewing on capitol hill. nbc's peter alexander is on duty at the white house this morning. peter, good morning to you. >> hey, savannah. president obama travels to kansas city this morning to highlight improvements in the economy but back here in washington there's another political war. this time largely within the republican party over funding the government and without an agreement by the end of this month, it is you who could feel the pain. >> reporter: stop me if you've heard this one before. if washington can't come to an agreement in just ten days it will run out of money. the government will shut down. house republican solution, a bill that funds the government through mid december but stops paying for the president's healthcare law. >> the law is a train wreck and it's going to raise cost.

it's destroying american jobs and it must go. >> reporter: but it won't go far. the republican bill is guaranteed to fail in the democratic controlled senate. some republican senators even dismissed the plan. one calling it the dumbest idea i've ever heard because even if it passed, president obama would never sign it into law. once again a stalemate. >> the problem is right now, this town, washington is locked up. >> reporter: so what would a shut down mean to you, members of the military and most government workers would get ious, not pay checks. tourists and national monuments locked out and passport and visa applications stalled and no new student loans until the government gets back to work. among those not affected, the members of congress. they still get paid and more now they're still bickering. >> while the president is happy

to negotiate with vladimir putin he won't engage with the congress on a plan. >> the white house's response? >> a little bit of putin envy on behalf of the speaker. but maybe he can explain that. >> here's the thing, avoiding a shut down is supposed to be the easy part. the last shut down was 20 years ago. the bigger challenge is raising the borrowing limit, they call it the debt ceiling. that's next up and there the possible consequence is default, again, threatening the nation's economy. >> peter alexander at the white house this morning. thank you so much. >> are we on the verge of another government shut down? that will be the topic this sunday on "meet the press." pope francis is speaking out for his new vision for the catholic church in what might be the most revealing interview since his election in march he shared his thoughts on the need for reform. here's ann thompson. >> reporter: in a blunt interview in the magazine "america" pope francis says the church cannot be obsessed with the issues that divide it.

we cannot insist on issues related only to abortion, gay marriage, and the use of contraceptive methods. this is not possible. he goes on to say, we have to find a new balance. otherwise, even the morale edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards. until now the pope followed the advice attributed by his name sake. preach often. when necessary, use words. pope francis is accessible. always stopping to bless the sick or kiss a child and he is humbling. excepting a used car to drive in vatican city. he likes to be close to the people and he wants his priests to do the same. urging them to act like pastors, not bureaucrats. the pope says he sees today's church as a field hospital that needs to heal wounds. the church sometimes has locked itself up in small things in small minded rules. he wants the catholic church to be the home of all.

not a small chapel that can only hold a small group of selected people. for today, ann thompson, nbc news, new york. >> new york's timothy cardinal dolan is the president of the u.s. conference of catholic bishops. good to see you. >> good to be with you. >> we have met before on the occasion of the pope making headlines. we observe he is not changing church doctrine, but this seems like a radical change in emphasis. do you agree? >> i agree. radical is a good word. that comes from the latin word of root. he is going back to the gospel. simplicity, a surprise, invitation, mercy and embrace. this man -- yesterday was the sixth anniversary you and i were together on march 19th as he began his ministry. six month anniversary yesterday, this guy batting 1000. >> we have seen him on the ride

back from brazil when he said who am i to judge homosexuals. i think he took it a step forward. in a way launching criticism of the church saying the church was obsessed with the social issues? is it a fair critique? does it ring true? >> we better listen to him. he is a successor of st. peter. he is asking for a stress strategy. sometimes as we come across as negative, as complaining too much we lose the folks. we have to be positive and fresh and affirming. if we emphasize the essentials all the other principles will flow from it. the practical application. he's on to something. he's a good teacher. >> for some people these words are comforting and welcoming. for others who care deeply about these social issues and i think you count yourself among them, is there anything alarming or upsetting or confusing about it? >> i hope not and what i welcome is that this man, pope francis, has given the church such a front burner position in the

life of the world that we now, we bishops, we priests, we have the opportunity now to help him clarify and present the fresh and vigorous way the teaching of the church. because all of a sudden everybody is interested. i'm getting invited to the today show. when i go to a restaurant people are asking me about pope francis and the teachings of the church. this is an amazingly effective teachable opportunity due to him. >> do you view it as a course correction? >> we always need correctives. i think so. every pope gives us a correction. every pope gives us a correction. this one is doing it very effectively and i'm glad he is. >> does it change anything you do. you're the head of the u.s. conference of catholic bishops. you have been involved in fighting obamacare's policy on contraceptives. does that change what you do or where you spend your time or your emphasis. >> yes. it does. i wouldn't exactly use those issue as you observed but did you hear what he said to bishops

the other day, he said don't be in an airplane looking down at your people and the poor, get down there with them. now that is good for me to hear. that's an examination of conscious. i have to say to myself, are you with your people? are you stuck in the office all the time? are you driving by in a car? you're supposed to be with them like he is. those are prophetic corrections that i need to hear. he's calling me to conversion of heart like jesus did. >> i'm out of time. >> i'm out of breath. >> has he surprised you? has this pope surprised you? >> i'm surprised that i'm not surprised. this is what we wanted. remember i told you savannah, you were there and march 19th i'm sitting next to one of the great intellects of the church and when the pope is speaking to me turns with tears in his eyes and he said this guy speaks like jesus and i said i think that's

the job description. he's doing it. >> it's always good to have you here. >> thank you. >> now here's matt. savannah, thank you. now to mexico where the heaviest rains on record left that country battered and in chaos. at least 97 people died and more than 1 million people are effected by the rain, the wind, and the flooding. mark potter is there with the latest. mark, good morning. >> good morning to you, matt. in the last week mexico has been hit by a one-two-three punch. three separate areas struck by a hurricane or a tropical storm. tens of thousands of tourists have been stranded and many are still trying to get out. >> reporter: flood waters are still raging in parts of mexico's west coast and the devastation is getting worse. bridges are collapsing. roads are being cutoff and washed away and tens of thousands of people are stranded. for many, the situation is desperate. the airport in acapulco is flooded and several hundred tourists are camping out there

hoping to get out this morning. some have been waiting for days. among them, edgar and his family. >> you have been waiting three days here at the airport. >> yes, exactly. >> how are you feeling? >> tired. sad. and it's a hard week. >> reporter: alice cooper and her family visiting from miami were still hoping to board one of the flights headed out last night. >> we have been trying since saturday to get out of here but it has been almost impossible. >> reporter: the mexican army is using military transports to fly tourists home and four private airlines are flying people out at no charge. rural towns like this one are now buried as mudslides overwhelmed homes and roads. relief aid has been slow and coming and there's some reports of looting but the situation isn't dire for everyone. some hotels managed to escape the ravages of the storm and are giving away rooms and meals. >> no problem. i am here. i have fantastic food. i'm happy.

free everything. >> but for so many here in the storm zone it is a much, much more desperate situation. mexican officials are trying to clear the road between mexico city and acapulco some more relief aid can come in here. back to you. >> mark potter, thank you so much. this storm maybe headed to the u.s.? certainly some of it. we're seeing that on the satellite and radar. good news for acapulco, they are drying out. no more storms for them. that will help with the relief efforts. closer to home, we seeing showers and thunderstorms getting themselves together. streaming out of mexico and into texas. so we are going to see a lot of heavy rain over the next 48 hours. from del rio to dallas, we have heavy thunderstorms. we have flash flood watches and flood watches in effect for much of central and southern texas and we're looking for as much as 5 inches of rain. heaviest areas are going to be

out around houston texas and then right along the louisiana-texas border. 3 to 5 inches of rain, guys. >> al, thank you. >> there was a controversial vote on food stamps on thursday. natalie is on assignment this morning. tamron has that story. >> senate democrats and the white house are denouncing a vote thursday by house republicans to cut funding for food stamps by almost $4 billion a year. which could affect some 3.8 million people. senate majority leader harry reid calls the measure hateful and punitive. the white house says it will take food out of hungry americans and promises a veto it if it gets to the president's desk. >> al qaeda is blamed for two attacks in yemen. the attacks killed at least 38 people at a military base and wounded dozens more. eight militants were also said to have been killed. officials say the death toll in colorado's flooding has risen

to at least seven people now. on thursday, searchers found the body of 80-year-old gerald bolin. a retired teacher who had gone to a shelter and tried to return to his home. the people unaccounted for has dropped to 140 people. a florida school bus driver is under investigation because of the cell phone video shot by a student. it shows the hillsborough county driver driving with one hand and texting with another. the school board has a policy against this practice. the world's fastest man has a plan to retire. usain bolt had a plan to retire after the rio de janeiro olympics. he said he would like to compete a year after that. and detroit's prince fielder did all he could to chase down a ball against seattle.

on legislation that may or may not lead to a government shutdown. >> and hurricane manuel is blamed for at least 97 deaths in mexico as remnants of that storm now head toward the united states. >> coming up, young college graduates making a surprising career decision to raise other people's kids. is it the economy talking or something else? interesting story. >> let's start by talking about amanda knox. she's getting ready to relive a nightmare she thought was over. facing a new trial for murder charges in italy. this all surrounds the death of her roommate back in 2007. amanda is here this morning to share her story. but first, a look at why she finds herself back at the mercy of the italian justice system. it was the decision heard round the world. after four years in jail, cleared of the 2007 murder of her roommate, meredith kercher

inside this apartment in it la. back on american soil, a free woman. >> thank you to everyone who believed in me. >> in her hometown of seattle, she goes back to college and writes a memoir. trying to put the past behind her until a new twist rocks her world again. >> acquittal of amanda knox overturned this morning. >> the italian supreme court orders a new trial forcing knox to face the same murder charges all over again. investigative journalist who spent a year covering the trial says the new hearings may be an attempt to resolve any doubts left in the court of public opinion. >> the majority of the italians believe she's guilty. the supreme court can't be oblivious to that fact. >> knox's family and attorneys remain hopeful her acquittal will stand. >> amanda knox haas was not involved in this horrific murder and she's absolutely unequivocally not guilty.

>> as her fate is determined in italy, knox will be watching from home, a half a world away from the courtroom. >> she's with us. her book is called "waiting for heard." it's good to see you. >> i've been reading some things you said over the last year or so. one of the things you talked about honestly, you've had symptoms of ptsd, had nightmares, panic attacks. as this trial now gets ready to start in about ten days, has that somewhat kind of inflamed that issue? >> absolutely. it's been a hard month. i -- it's so crazy to -- it's happening so fast. it's happening and i'm not quite sure what's going to happen. but i'm trying to do everything i can to make a difference. >> i look back april 30th was

the last time i saw you make a comment where you said you were still considering going. >> yeah. >> you were still considering going there. now you said no you will not be there to stand trial. most people assume that much of the decision is based on the fear if you're found guilty, you could go back to prison and won't see the united states for a long time. >> i look at it as, i was already in prison as an innocent person in italy. i can't reconcile the choice to go back with that experience. it's not a possibility. it is i was imprisoned as an innocent person. i just can't relive that. i'm not -- i don't think i'm going to be put back in prison. i think that we're going to win. that's why i'm fighting this fight. that's why i continue to, to put forth the defensive argument in court. >> but you know that by saying i

will not go back there, there are going to be some people who look at that decision and say it's a sign of guilt. she's got something to hide she doesn't want to stand trial. >> i look at it as an admission of innocence to be quite honest. because, i mean, besides the fact that there are so many factors that are not allowing me to go back, financial ones, ones where i'm going to school, ones where i don't -- i want the court to proceed without distraction. it's -- i was imprisoned as an innocent person. and that -- it's common sense not to go back. >> if i'm the prosecutor though, i think you're handing me an opportunity. first of all, you don't get a chance to make an impassioned plea for ayour innocence the wa you did in italian. if i'm the prosecutor and telling the court about your trustworthiness and your version of the facts and the character issues in the first two trials, i get to point at an empty chair

and i get to say she didn't care enough to come back and stand trial. >> that drives me crazy. i understand that risk. but what is being on trial here is not my character. is shouldn't be. what should be on trial is the fact that the case and if you look at the facts of the case, there's proof of my innocence in there being no -- there's no trace of me in the room where my friend was murdered. there's traces all over the place of the man who actually did this. rudy ga day. it's impossible for me to have participate north dakota this crime if there's no trace of me. >> you said you still have faith in the italian legal system, the justice system. that's the sis thaem convicted you the first time, overturned the conviction on appeal and then ordered a new trial. how do you still have faith in the system that's gone back and forth like that? >> well, two judges looked at this case.

judge helmand and judge -- the appeal trial judge. they saw that i was innocent. you can be acquitted both ways. you can be acquitted for being not enough evidence to prove your guilt and you can be acquitted for being innocent. they found me innocent. that renewed my faith in the justice system. at this point, people have told me, why do you even keep fighting? i believe that that is possible. i i believe that people who really care about justice and who really look at this without prejudice are going to come to the same conclusion. >> before i ask you the next question, do you mind next question, do you mind sticking around for a few minutes? can i continue this in a few minutes. >> sure. >> let me end with this and we'll bring you back. how a you going to keep one this trial? is there a feed you'll be able to see each day. you'll be going to school. are you going to watch it every day? >> i'm not quite sure about watching it.

i'm definitely going to be in contact with my lawyers so what i am plan as good that they will call me for every break that happens during a single court session. they'll call me. tell me what's happening. >> will you have input? will you make suggestions? >> well, i'm trying to figure out how this will be because during court i would listen and i would say well that person is saying something that's completely inaccurate can you ask them a question and i won't be there this time. i'm really not sure what itself going to look like. >> stick around. i appreciate the time and by the way, i want to mention again the book is called "waiting to be heard." thanks. we'll see u in a couple of minutes. let's go to al and savannah. >> matt, thank you so much. i'm going to take it right now and show you we have a wide area of showers and thunderstorms stretching from texas. making it's way all the way up here. wet weather in the eastern part of the country. as we start off with saturday,

are you a 10? are you an 8? >> i'm a 9. there's always the fear that's lingering and the experience of being convicted when i shouldn't have. but things are changed. it's not just the prosecutions voice that's out there. and while it is the legal process in italy where one can be convicted of a crime if there is no motive to be found and if there's only circumstantial evidence, you cannot be convicted if there is proof to the contrary. >> so that one in ten chance, backo the hypothetical, if you're found guilty you could live in this country. they could want you extradited. you could be here outside the reach of the italian law but with an international arrest warrant hanging over your head. you wouldn't be allowed to travel. could you imagine life like that? >> i imagine it all the time because i have to think the worst case scenario. i have to prepare in my mind what that would be like. i mean, i thought about what it

would be like to live my entire life in prison. and to lose everything. to lose what i have been able to come back to and rebuild. i think about it all the time and it's so scary. everything is at stake. >> and finally, meredith's parents may not be swayed by a verdict one way or another. they may always think that you are responsible for the death, the murder of their daughter. can you live with that? >> i really hope that that isn't the case. i really hope that they can come to understand that it's so hard to be logical about this when you have lost someone so close to you and so important to you but i really hope that with time, with things changing they'll give me innocence a chance and i'll be able to

will have a broader range of well paying jobs. >> it's a way of marketing their skills saying i bring something extra to the table in the nature of being able to tutor or talk to the kids about their math problems or whatever. >> it is but you hope that they're also going to be getting some skills along the way so when they do go out to the next job they can use those skills for something else. >> to broaden the discussion it raises all the same questions against about feminism. what does it really mean? does it mean you have to follow a certain career path or does it mean that you have the choice to do whatever you want? >> it's crucial to remember, feminism was about creating choices. it was about getting women away from the confines they have lived under. so hopefully we're moving into an era where we can make sure that young women have the choices they want and follow choices that have meaning for them. if they're choosing to become nanny that's great but if they want to become something else they can pursue what their real

surfing's elite world champiship tour and quincy wouldn't just be the only new yorker on the tour, she would be the first. >> so what's a nice girl from two hours from new york city doing as one of the top young surfers in the world? when did you first start surfing? >> when i was about seven years old. >> was it because everybody aroundou was surfing. >> i said i wasn't going to surf. but i was just on the beach and i got bored. >> reporter: and that boredom was replaced by something else. winning. >> i started going with my friends out to local contests and i would come home with like these cool little trophies and i >> and she kept on going with her family's full support. >> the story goes that there were times in school where the waves would be great and your folks would go in and basically tell the teachers to principal quincy is going to surf now because the waves are rolling in. >> yeah, they're so supportive because they understand the love that i have for surfing because they surf as well.

they did anything they could. help me with getting a tutor or traveling with me. >> reporter: she graduated with her high school class this past june and went to prom and has a day job working at her family's restaurant. sounds like a typical teenager except this teen had an attitude problem. she needed to get one. to be a winner in this sport, sometimes waves have to be stolen. >> do you think your reputation out there, do they expect you to be more aggressive? >> yeah, most of the time. sometimes have to push myself to be more aggressive. my new york side does come out. >> you're a new yorker that has to push herself to be aggressive? >> yeah, sometimes. >> reporter: but it's not just surfing that's gotten the attention of publications like the new york times which recently did a profile on quincy. it's also her all american good looks. quincy has done some modeling. but it's pretty clear she would rather be surfing. even if the water is already so

[ singing ] >> reporter: but for the real life couple idina menzel and taye digs. cherished minutes are shared here. a camp they started for young city girls. >> i always wanted to have a camp. it had to be centered on young women finding themselves, finding their voices. helping th leadership skills. >> focussing on the girls themselves as opposed to the arts or the sports. >> right. using the arts to help them express themselves and find their creative souls. >> reporter: these creative souls first met 18 years ago on the set of the tony award winning musical rent, setting the scene for their romance. >> and then he heard me sing. >> and obviously she tore it up. >> w wn she tore it up, what was your impression? that was it?

>> well then it was how can -- yeah, then i had to work my game. figure out how i could get in there. do you know what i mean? >> reporter: for ten days, idina, taye and other broadway vets mentor these girls as they write songs, turn their poems into performances, and hone their dance moves. >> here, here, yeah, just a little bit. >> reporter: even though this camp isn't all about performance, you do bring in friends that are pretty talented and they learn fro the best of the best. >> and selfishly that was always part of my dream. >> reporter: but they had meaningful summers spent at camp, shaping who they are today. >> one of the first times i was given a solo. so for me and how it made me feel while i was singing and then afterwards feeling like i had succeeded knowing, okay, this is something that i can do. >> reporter: a lesson he is sharing with these campers.

>> before this i wasn't confident. i would dance in my room and wouldn't really dance in front of people. the first time i was put in a spotlight as a solo and the first year i was nervous. now i'm doing a improv dance. >> i'm nerdy and kind of a misfit at school. i tend to be to theside. people don't pay that much attention. so it's really cool that someone is paying attention. >> eventually i got to the point where i didn't say hush julie it is going to be okay but hush julie you are okay. >> i have to draw a parallel there. these roles you choose kind of show what you want these girls to be. >> yeah it keeps happening. it's funny. it's about young woman having so much power and not knowing how to harness it and then usually they find a way. whether it's the kids in glee,

they find ways to harness this power and do good with it. >> awesome. that was great. >> as women, i think that's really powerful. it's not about being scary, it's about being fierce. >> reporter: using their forces to empower a new generation of young girls to find and use thei theirs. >> that's cute. >> wow. >> idina and taye hope to extend the program all year supporting the girls and when idina performed at carnigie hall she invited that young performer on stage to help read a poem. >> it's great. >> plus they're such a talented couple and to use their talents to help others, that's what all of us should do. >> changing those girls lives

thanks, mom. good morning to you. it's 9:26. police in san francisco have arrested a burglary suspect after chasing him from roof top to roof top early this morning. officers believe the man tried to break into an atm at the bank of america in the bay view district. then somehow got on to a roof. eventually fell through a weak spot into an apartment before being taken away in handcuffs. also, in san francisco police investigating a shooting that killed a man and injured a woman. officers say they had to use pepper spray to disburse the crowd of people last night. no word on any suspects. crews responding to a house fire in san jose stumbled upon something much more suspicious. a marijuana grow. around 5:30 this morning crews got the call the small house

fire on wigwham court in south san jose. they were able to quickly knock it down, and during the search of the house, they found a small pot grow. no one was home at the time. the masses are certainly rejoicing in the bay area as they now have their hands on the coveted new iphone. apple stores in the bay area opened about an hour and a half ago. this is the scene in the store in downtown palo alto where hundreds lined up. some evend/pa camping out for d to be one of the first to get the new iphone 51 and 5c. recognize that guy right there? that's apple ceo tim cook greeting customers before that store in palo alto officially opened. we'll have a look at the forecast right after this.

your authenticity and vulnerability. you can say i'm still large and in charge but i don't know. >> there's another topic being in charge as parents but there's a huge rise in extreme bie drinking which is different than binge drinking. can you explain that. >> 10 or more. >> but why is there a rise with children. we're trying to tell them the problems that can occur if you drink too much but kids think they're invincible. >> it's so prevalent that they think it'sarmless but alcohol has damaging effects on the heart, the liver, kids can go into a coma and it also leads to risky other behaviors. sexual positions, getting into a car with somebody that is drinking and driving. >> but they looked at the kids doing the binge drinking and a lot of them don't spend time with their family. when i read the article i thought aboutow we don't have family dinners anymore or a lot of together time. >> not everybody has that family

police will soon hold a graduation ceremony, but the force is still under staffed. right now the oakland police department has about 615 officers. this is down from a high of 836 officers back in 2008. the oakland police department just received a federal grant that will pay for ten more officers, but some neighborhoods say that's just not enough. in fact, some neighborhoods are paying for their own private security to patrol the streets. vma security says it is now hired to patrol the oakland hills. people can have some peace of mind. things are much calmer this morning on a south bay highway. chp officers say someone opened fire on passing drivers wednesday night. police know of nine victims, but say there could be more. officers say the shooter used a bb gun, but they still do not know who the shooter is or why they did it. fortunately, no one was hurt. it's the weekend. let's go ahead and check that forecast. actually, it's rob in for christina.
