words this morning. kristen welker is life at the washington. >> reporter: president obama's message to congress, do your job. this as lawmakers engage in chicken over the nation's economy with the ball now in the senate's court. as washington careens toward a possible government shutdown, this morning, president obama is blaming the republicans in his weekly address. >> i will not allow anyone to harm this country's reputation or threaten to inflect economic pain on millions of people just to make an ideological point. >> reporter: this a day after the house to keep the government reasoning. it's a bill that has no chance of passing in the democratically-controlled senate. the tea party pushed passage of the measure who defended the move on friday. >> the american people don't want the government shutdown and they don't want obamacare.

>> reporter: but other republicans sided with democrats and slammed the more conservative members of their party. >> the issue is important. it requires real conservative solutions, not headline hunting. >> reporter: the big question? what would a government shutdown mean for you? officials say if it occurs, paychecks for military personnel could be delayed and national parks and monuments closed to tourists and likely a furlough and force companies to slow down hiring. americans across the country, including kansas city, missouri, where president obama spoke friday, are expressing frustration. >> it seems like a lot of people are just so busy wanting to show off rather than figure out the right thing to do. >> get >> get down and get your job done like you're supposed to be doing. >> reporter: now, if the government shuts down all essential personnel like those

responsible for national security would stay on the job. and of course if that does happen, there will be plenty of blame to go around, including for president obama who last night placed calls to john boehner but those calls did very lit toll resolve the standoff. >> thank you. >> now to some news that broke overnight. a kark chapter for a young woman several years ago. she gained national attention when she couldn't stop hiccupping for weeks. >> now to talk about that news apt jennifer mee, she faced a first degree murder charge in connection with the shooting death of a florida man an late last night she learned her fate. >> late friday night a florida jury found jennifer mee guilty of first degree murder. >> i will sentence you to life in prison without patrol.

>> causing her to break down in tears. it's just the latest chapter for mee who came to prominence in 2007 appearing here on today. >> i know this started out of nowhere. first it's kind of funny, now it's not. >> no not at all. >> she was a 15-year-old with an unusual case of the hiccups that lasted longer than five weeks. but prosecutors say she lured this man to a home, and in a struggle her friends shot him four times. mee spok to today while awaiting her time. >> i let the devil overcome me. >> her attorneys argue she was an innocent bystander. now mee will have 30 days to appeal. now for the other defendants in the case, one has been sentenced

to prison last month and the other defendant still has a trial to come. a boy is recovering this morning from extensive surgery after he was shot in the face when he was playing in the park. the latest victim of the chicago's gun epidemic, one that has an sbir city searching for some way to end this violence. >> reporter: in chicago's back of the yards neighborhood, the kids are back outdoors. some here in cornell square park, the very spot where the gun shots shattered the evening quiet. >> illegal guns, illegal guns drive violence. >> reporter: in spite of police efforts to chase gangs from the streets, innocent children tonight to get caught in the cross fire. on thursday night, one of the victims, three years old was shot in the face.

>> how do you shoot a three-year-old in the face. >> it needs to stop. it needs to stop. >> reporter: it's something every parent can identify with, the local park, clean safe place to send the kids. here in chicago, 13 people were shot in this one. 15-year-old hadiya pendleton was in a park with friends when she was gunned down in january. >>. but taking back the streets is proving difficult. many kids are now escorted safely across gang lines just to get to schools and police in troubled neighbors are more visible and on foot. >> the military type weapons like the one we believe to have been used in this shooting belong on a battlefield. >> reporter: you don't feel defeated after what happened in this park? >> no. the only way that i'm defeated is if i quit and i'm not going

rescued from their cars when these roads just turned into rivers there. they were actually just heading to school. but luckily everyone was saved and everyone is okay. we did see some significant flooding out that way. thanks to the cold front that is producing heavy rain out in front of it. in new orleans we already have flood warnings in effect. you can see in red here in central mississippi and also in the south western louisiana we do have the flash flood warnings. that's when the roads turn into rivers very quickly. we're looking a the the possibility of perhaps up to four to five inches of rain across parts of tennessee, into alabama and north eastern parts of louisiana and also along the immediate gulf coast sfats. there is the chance we could end

light rain around the bay area and more substance rain across the area. muggy, 60s and 70s around the bay area. showers should approach as we approach the evening. some of those showers may briefly contain a little bit of thunder. interesting day today. tomorrow showers are gone and we'll see a mild and breezy start to next week. >> and that is your latest forecast. e neglected to say great job in boulder last week. >> thank you so much. typically when there's a car accident the police are among the first to respond. but in houston the police chief was the first on the scene because the accident was his fault. he hit a pedestrian and the whole thing was caught on camera. charles had lok has more on the punishment he's accepted. >> the traffic video is tough to watch, showing a dark suv

this guy has been showing up all over dressed as a creepy clown. if your kids don't like clowns you might want to send them to another room. >> in a sleepy english town, something very strange is going on and it has people looking 0 over their shoulders. when the hours are late and the lights start to go, someone spooky appears. this mystery clown doesn't juggle, he doesn't speak, he just stands there. he was first spotted on friday the 13th and has sense been seen all over the town of north hampton, posting photos on his facebook page getting more than 150,000 likes but not everybody is a fan. >> a bit scary. >> when i first saw the picture it was frightening. >> but many people, it's no laughing matter. clowns just freak them out. >> because it's a mask, because it may be something that people are unfamiliar with, it can

generate fears and for some people that goes back to childhood when they were frightened by clowns. >> there's even a term for it, coul. ro phobia, feels of dread, fast heartbeat and crying. we can probably blame steven king's "it" for some of that. the north hampton clown told a newspaper he only wants to entertain, sometimes he carries balloons, sometimes a teddy bear. but all people are really interested in is his identity. >> i will find the clown. >> now everyone is watching and waiting to see where the creepy clown will turn up next. >> he has a funny definition of entertaining. >> are you saying he's not doing the kids' birthday party.

i'm sitting at what we call home base. don't adjust your television set. i am moving. it's okay. this is one of the coolest features of the new studio 1a. lazy susan meets turn table, call it what you will. this baby rotates a full 360 degrees. in a few moments we will complete basically 180-degree turn so we will be facing the other direction. before we can get there, though, we will take a paws at 90 degrees, how about that? lester holt is across the studio from me with other new features with we have. >> this is a production area. look at this huge tv screen. this is where i'm going to come watch the super bowl, by the way. we can split it into six screens. 15-foot screen becomes six and this is a production area. we do a lot of the product demonstrations and musical acts here and catchall area and new monitors we can put a lot of different graphics and move the segments along. over here is what we call -- we always called it the sofa area.
