good morning to you. looking live at some very nice cloud cover there in san bruno. and rob, you always know i'm good for a pot of soup or a pot of chilli on a day like this. today we're going on the heart walk. i'm wondering if i'm going to get soaked. >> you're probably going to see

a few showers. you're starting to see some of those cells moving ashore. right now in parts of the south bay we've been seeing drizzle and mist. this is the area we're watching. it's showing increasing lift in the atmosphere. the cold front is still offshore. as that sweeps toward the bay area, it's going to take the moisture out there, force it to rise up and that's going to generate showers. especially around midday today, less so as we head toward the evening. another thing you may have noticed is very warm air to get the day started. our afternoon highs probably just about 5 to 8 degrees warmer than we are right now. once the rain arrives, it's going to help to cool off the atmosphere a bit. yesterday we were starting the morning off in the mid 40s. quite a shift here of warm and mild air.

winds primarily out of the south and winds coming in off the ocean will keep things cool. not much wind out there again today. for the a's game early in the afternoon, a few scattered showers, less so as we head into the evening. and for the stanford game coming up, we'll see scattered showers maybe toward the first half of the game and then things will be shutting down as we head toward the evening. notice how things do pick up right around lunch time. once the sun sets, the atmosphere should stabilize some and some drier air should arrive. east bay temperatures about the same range. despite the warm start we're seeing to the morning, we'll have a fairly mild finish to the

day, mid 60s closer to san francisco and low to mid 60s along the coast. scattered showers, the slight chance of thunder could happen in the north bay and along the coast where instability will be the highest around midday, fall begins tomorrow afternoon and temperatures actually will rebound into the beginning of next week. so take an umbrella with you during the walk today off and on. >> all right. i think i'm going to get one of those shower caps. thanks. >> a short boat trip this time of year may get you up close to some chawhales. we are looking live at the golden gate bridge, where whales like to sometimes visit. they potentially put themselves in danger by coming into the path of commercial ship traffic. we show you how a new app can help keep the two apart. >> reporter: the cries of

excitement as whale watchers along the bay area coastline come across the lumbering giants and now biologists are hoping to put these ordinary folks to work hoping to save these very whales. >> we really need eyes on the water all the time. >> hundreds of blue and hump back whales travel to the area every summer to feed. at least several are hit and killed by ships. this researcher is worried rerouting the ships isn't enough. >> the vessel will still travel over very important habitat, areas where we have high density of animals. >> reporter: so they developed an app for anyone who sees a whale to record it on their cell phone. those sightings can quickly be relayed to noaa, which can

notify vessels traveling in the area. >> the shippers hear an announcement when they come into the area that there are whales in the area and to slow down and to be careful. >> reporter: last year five whales were killed by ship strikes outside the bay area. researchers estimate that's only about 10% of actual fatalities. >> if you get two or three whales, blue whales being struck, that's a big piece of the population. >> reporter: seen advertiscient launching several expeditions during this week. they're trying to compare their data with the science collected by the citizen brigade to better keep whales and ships apart. >> still ahead on "today in the bay," who is tracking you

from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> i'm kris sanchez along with rob mayeda. >> you're going to see fog at the bottom of the screen and rain approaching from the west. san jose, light rain and drizzle on some of the hills, east of downtown san jose. moving into marin county, you can see the areas in yellow. those are some of the more intense, brief showers that pass on by. that's when skies will turn mostly cloudy and we'll have a slight chance today of isolated thunder, especially along the

bay where instability will be the highest. the highs pretty mild for this time of year. last day of summer, finishing with the 60s and low 70s for highs. tomorrow if you have outdoor plans looks a lot nicer. linebacker alton smith was charged with a dui yesterday after he was involved in an accident in an affluent neighborhood. >> reporter: teammate ray mcdonald lives in this house a block away from where aldon smith crashed his truck in a front yard nearby. i asked him if he hosted a party. he said no, i did not. there's a lot of talk on twitter that smith was at this san

francisco night club but neighbors wonder if a party in the area is the reason why his truck ended up in this woman's back yard. >> i heard a noise like car accident and i look out of the window and see the big truck in my yard. >> reporter: another neighbor who didn't want to go on camera said he smelled burning rubber and walked outside. he said he banged on semi's window several times and reached in the window to turn off the ignition. >> the driver was identified as aldon smith, he was arrested and booked. >> reporter: this isn't the first time smith has been in trouble with the law. in january of 2012, he was

arrested for suspicion of dui. six months later he was stabbed at a party at his home. earlier this month hoove was na in a lawsuit by a man who said he was shot at a party he hosted. >> if you look at this situation, there's one common element and that's the use of alcohol. the dui arrest was the best thing for the plaintiffs that could have ever happened because they need to show that aldon smith was out of control on the night of the party and that the premises were out of control on the night of the party and exhibit a in the plaintiff's case is going to be a dui at 7:00 in the morning. >> and we continue our coverage on the aldon smith story online. go to nbcbayarea.com to watch

said he was dramatically affected by the loss of 12 innocent lives but quickly went on to describe his work experience and offer his services. the navy confirms the e-mail but declined to comment. >> president obama, first lady michelle obama will attend a memorial service for the victims tomorrow, which is being held at the marine barracks washington, the oldest active post in the marine corps. the service is not open to the public but invitations were sent to roughly 4,000 people. the president also plans to meet with the victims' families. >> new this morning, vast areas of mexico remain underwater this morning after storms hit the country on opposite coastlines this weekend. animals at a zoo ended up wading or swimming through deep floodwaters. giraff giraffes, zebras and other animals were trapped in their enclosures. officials say 12 animals at that zoo have died. in the southern state of garrow,

here's a view of the clouds spilling into the sun. the next 15 to 20 minutes, moving across marin county, can you see the showers here mainly approaching the north bay coastline for now. this is a sign of things to come here, at least for the first half of the day, these band of showers pushing through approaching san rafael in the next half hour. you can see we've been seeing some light rain. this activity is going to increase, become a little more widespread around lunchtime as this cold front approaches the bay area and you can see the clouds starting to appear offshore. now, notice here the boxed in area in green. the storm prediction center placing most of the day area from santa cruz northward in a slight chance of thundershowers today but the greatest instability closest to the cooler air loft will be on the north bay and combination of

warmer waters on the ocean, it will be the coastal locations and the north bay that will see the best bet for a little bit of thunder. we've got 60s outside. we're going to finish the bay with winds out of the south. they should shift a little westward but stay relatively light for america's cup. yesterday the winds backed off. today 5 to 10 miles an hour may increase. around the a's game today we'll see showers early off and on at times, probably not enough to stop the game but we'll have to watch this closely, at least during the beginning of the game. and around stanford, we'll see showe showers. if you have evening plans,

or euthanize your pet if they're found to be at fault? >> you can be. normally they don't go down that path very quickly. they do assess the behavior of the animal and prior incidents before they make a decision like that. but, yes, they can force you. >> and pets like randy that you have at pets at need have been evaluated by animal behavioralists and he says can you talk about me now? if you come to adopt a pet like randy, who is a 3-year-old terrier -- >> in a shelter environment, we do work very hard with them, assessing their behavior during their time with us. but we always let people know when you get them out in a home and they reach a comfort level, you can see behavior that we didn't know about but we are there for you and call, you know, we'll help you get into training or anything that you need. >> all right. >> we do try to do as much as possible. >> we don't want to short change
