is this looming government shut down. nbc's peter alexander is in washington. peter, good morning to you. >> matt, good morning to you. simply put, everyone is zeroing in on october 1st. that's next tuesday. if congress doesn't reach a budget deal boy then, federal agencies close. it's also the first day when uninsured americans can sign up for the president's health care law. so with the clock ticking, here is where things stand. it's getting down to the wire. lawmakers have barely 100 hours to agree how to keep the government funded or shut it down tuesday. republicans remain deeply divided. the talk-a-thon quickly dismissed by john mccain who insisted it is not worth shutting the government down over opposition to obama care. >> we fought as hard as we could in a fair and honest manner. and we lost. >> reporter: even talk of a government shutdown is putting

the brakes on sales at this volvo dealership in northern virginia. >> people are being, they need to think before they can actually buy a volvo. >> reporter: a shutdown could mean furloughs and government and military workers would have to settle for ious and not paychecks. national parks and museums, even the national zoo all closed. bad news for tourists, but also for hotels, restaurants and travel companies that serve them. if you're heading overseas, better already have your passport, those applications will stall. as for the president's health care law, the white house still has plenty of explaining to do. two out of three americans recently told nbc news they don't understand the law. beginning tuesday, october 1st, anyone who doesn't have insurance can sign up through an online marketplace, called an exchange. what will happen is that people are going to look, they're going to shop, they're going to compare and make the decision that works best for them and their family. >> reporter: the federal government exchanges will offer

four levels of coverage from bronze to platinum. a family of four in texas earning $50,000 could pay $282 a month after tax credits. the president hits the road again today. he's going to head to maryland to push the uninsured to sign up. remember, again, that first day is october 1st. this is a stalemate, it is a mess. even if they narrowly avoid a shut down by shifting the fight to another looming battle next month over raising the nation's borrowing limit. trying to delay the president's health care law. >> peter alexander, thanks so much. let's turn to david gregory, moderator of "meet the press." >> good morning savannah. >> we're days away from a government shut down and no path out but lawmakers always seem to avoid it at the 11th hour. do you think that will happen again or is the threat more real this time? >> washington loves to engage in the same destructive behavior every couple years whether it needs to or not.

i think there are republicans, particularly leadership that don't want to do this. they don't want to shut the government down. universal feeling that the party that is more divided, that's republicans, will feel most of the heat on this from the public and that's why they don't want to do it. i think it's still possible that you could have a shut down for a couple days, two, three days depending on when the senate votes on their version of this bill to keep the government open. the house then has to make a decision. do they want to have another fight over obama care over defunding this or shift the fight, as peter said, over to its separate matter, that's whether or not they're going to raise the debt ceiling. there, they may try to delay obama care by a year. >> let me ask you about that. we have a date on the real dooms day. the treasury secretary said yesterday that we will reach the borrowing limit in this country no later than october 17th. in your mind, is that the real crisis point? >> i think it is a real crisis point because we know the kind of economic shock that the world and certainly the u.s. economy

could feel, if they were to take that step. that's why nobody messes with this and they always end up raising the debt ceiling, whether they want to or not. most americans don't support doing that and the president won't talk about any kind of negotiation raising the debt ceiling because congress paying its bills that they appropriated. house republicans, especially the leadership think it's a more palatable fund that we're not going to defund obama care, but can we delay it? why not delay more of it. my big question, what does that get you in the end? what is the real end game here? the law is still the law and upheld by the supreme court and it's going to have its effects positive and negative as we move forward over the next few years sglp david gregory, much more on "meet the press." thank you for that. we should let everybody know we should be focusing more on this new health care law. its impact on you all next week across the platforms of nbc news. we also have new details this morning on last week's deadly shooting at that navy yard in washington, d.c.

surveillance video is now emerged showing the gunman inside the facility. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has the latest on that. hi, pete. >> matt, good morning. ten days after the shooting spree, employees who work in the building where it happened are still not allowed back in because evidence teams continue working, but we have a clearer picture of what happened and why. the fbi says family members of the victims were notified before the materials you are about to see were released. the fbi released surveillance video of aaron alexis holding his shotgun, ultterinately walking and hiding in the hallways where he shot his victims. >> there are indicators that alexis was prepared to die during the attack and that he accepted death as the inevitable consequence of his actions. >> reporter: cameras show him entering the building with a backpack, apparently with a shotgun and ammunition inside. he emerges from a restroom on the fourth floor holding the gun

low and looking in office doors. another view show him coming down a stairway. a final video shows him l video at one point behind a corner as people scramble at the other end of the hallway. when the fbi recovered his shutgon. he discovered he sawed it down and wrote on it, end to the torment. on the body of the gun, not what you all say. better off this way. and my e-l-f weapon. ultralow frequency attack is what i've been subject to for the last three months and to be perfectly honest, that is what has driven me to this. >> alexis held a delutional belief that he was being influenced by extremely low frequency or elf, electromagnetic waves. >> reporter: the navy once used elf to communicate with submarines deep under water but shut the program down a decade

after a string of fires overnight. someone set fires to six trash cans on a busy l.a. street and one of them spread to a business. it took hours for firefighters to knock it down. it was a commuter's nightmare wednesday for tens of thousands of people in the northeast. metro north, the country's second busiest commuter railroad was brought to a halt. a feeder cable failed leaving passengers travel between new york city and connecticut scrambling to find other ways to work. some trains are still running and the problem, though, may take up to three weeks to fix. now to wall street and what is moving the markets. cnbc courtney reagan joins us with news on smartphones. good morning. >> good morning to you natalie. if you are popping into your new t-mobile store for a blackberry. the company decided to sell t-mobile smartphones online.

wins in a row to hold on to the america's cup. a valuable life lesson for a group of teenagers. we'll introduce you to a high school football coach who suspended his entire team for showing a lack of character off the field. >> that's interesting. first, more than a year after, or after shellie zimmerman stood by her husband, george, as he waited to stand trial for the shooting death of trayvon martin. following his acquittal she filed for divorce. we'll talk to her exclusively in a minute. first, kerry sanders looks back at the zimmerman case and a marriage in the public eye. >> reporter: shellie zimmerman stood by her husband, george, at his trial in the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. >> we, the jury, find george zimmerman not guilty. >> reporter: he was acquitted of second degree murder charges and less than two months after the verdict, shellie zimmerman filed for divorce saying in court documents, the marriage between the parties is irretrievably

broken. the private dispute spilled into the public eye after an incident at shellie zimmerman's father house on september 9th. after her call to 911, police rushed to the home and briefly detained george zimmerman. >> get on your knees! >> reporter: according to a police report, shellie told investigators that george punched her father in the nose and smashed her ipad. george zimmerman told officers that shellie's father was the aggressor and shellie hit george with the ipad. no charges were filed and no guns were found. >> here's what's going on. >> reporter: at a news conference shortly after the incident, shellie zimmerman barely spoke. >> she's not feeling that great. >> reporter: her lawyer telling reporters shellie zimmerman just wants to move on with her life. for "today" kerry sanders nbc news, miami. >> wwant to mention that george zimmerman sued nbc for defamation. the company strongly denies his

allegations and shellie zimmerman is with us exclusively now. we reached out to george zimmerman's representatives for a statement and they said they were not interesting in commenting. shellie and kelly, good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> i want to start with that incident, this altercation between you and george zimmerman just a few weeks ago. you said he had his hand on a gun and he was threatening you and he said he was going to shoot you when you called 911 and he continually had his hand on that gun. as you know, police say they never confiscated the gun, they never even laid eyes on a gun. do you stand by your story completely? >> absolutely. i absolutely stand by my story. >> you saw a gun? you saw him place his hand on a gun? you had visual contact or confirmation that he had a gun and threatening you with it. >> i did not see a gun, but i saw, i know my husband, i saw him in a stance and a look in his eyes that i've never seen before. his shirt was halfway unbuttoned.

and he was putting his hand in his shirt and saying, please, step closer. please, step closer. and so i think that just logically i assumed he had a gun on him. >> you also said to that 911 operator, i don't know what he's capable of. those words struck me, shellie. i don't know what he's capable of. they're inflammatory words, considering your husband was just acquitted on murder charges. were they used intentionally to raise questions, to raise doubts about not only his behavior during this altercation, but perhaps his behavior on the night that trayvon martin was shot? >> no, they weren't intentional. i really don't know what he's capable of. this person that i'm married to, that i'm divorcing, i kind of realized now that i don't know him. and i really don't know what he's capable of. i saw a look in his eyes that i've never seen before that day. >> if you don't know what he's capable of.

he threatened you with a gun and you say he punched your father in the nose, why didn't you press charges? >> in hindsight, i should have. and i really regret that. but, i'm on probation and the officers made it very clear that day that if i pressed charges, we were all going to go to jail and i would have been the only one to stay there. >> you mentioned you are on probation and i want it bring up two dynamics. you're going through a divorce. my experience over the years tells me when emotions run high. three stories. his story, her story and the truth which is somewhere in the middle. but you also pled guilty to perjury charges based on something you said during a bail hearing for george zimmerman that was clearly untrue. you got caught in a lie. do you have credibility issues as you sit here this morning? >> i think i have credibility issues and i own that and i'm a grown woman and i made a mistake and i own that. but the truth is the truth and i want to always, forever more, tell the truth. that's why i'm here.

>> you stood by him through this entire trial. you cried when he was acquitted. i would imagine those were tears of joy. >> they were. >> and then a short time later you filed for divorce. are you telling me he's changed that dramatically since the trial that forced you to do that? >> yes, he has. >> in what way? >> he just kind of treated me like i was disposable. >> you mean after standing by him? >> yes. after standing by him. he kind of left and i guess kind of went on a victory tour without me and i thought that i was living a life with him and that we were going to kind of rebuild after all of this and he had other plans for me. >> through all of this, with all you're now going through. with the divorce and this altercation, has it changed your perspective at all on what he's told you happened the night that trayvon martin was shot and killed? do you still believe the story

that we have all heard from him? >> i'm conflicted on that. i believe the evidence. but this revelation in my life has really helped me to take the blinders off and start to see things. >> just let me make sure i understand. you now doubt his innocence, at least the fact that he was acting in self-defense on the night that trayvon martin was killed? >> i think anyone would doubt that innocence. because i don't know the person that i've been married to. >> that's a dramatic change. i mean, you didn't seem to doubt his innocence during the entire trial. you stood right there by his side. you went into hiding with him. you faced death threats with him. you lied under oath for him. and now you're saying you have doubts? >> i have doubts. but i also believe the evidence. >> one of the jurors in this case, i think it was juror said

george zimmerman got away with murder but you can't get away from god. in your opinion, did the justice system work here? >> i think so. i respect the jury's decision. they saw more evidence than i've seen. >> and can you look me in the eye and tell me that you don't believe your husband profiled trayvon martin? >> yes, he did not profile trayvon martin. >> if you think trayvon martin were white it would have ended in the same fashion? >> i do. >> where do you go from here? >> focusing on myself. i lost 40 pounds since the trial. really taking care of myself and moving forward with my life. >> have you been able to file papers for the divorce? >> they're fild but we have not served. >> do you know where he is? >> no. >> have had no contact since that altercation? >> no. >> we'll keep it that way? >> yes, we will. >> shellie, thank you. let's get a check of the

natalie, good morning again. >> good morning to you guys once again as well. the fbi has released chilling surveillance video of the washington navy yard gunman stalking the hallways where he killed 12 people last week. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams joins us from washington with more. pete, good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning. this is video taken inside the building where the shooting happened. this shows aaron alexis i merging from a fourth floor restroom holding the shotgun low, looking into office doors. in another view, he comes down a stairway. investigators say he shot at victims on three floors and in a final video, he's shown hiding at one point behind a corner as people scramble at the other end of the hallway. he had scratched into the barrel of the gun "end to the torment. not what y'all say. better off this way. and my elf weapon." the fbi says he was mentally disturbed, believing he was controlled by e.l.t. or extremely low frequency radio waves. natalie? >> nanks so much.

the estranged wife of george zimmerman made a surprising admission earlier on "today" when matt asked that she now has doubts her husband acted in self-defense when he shot unarmed teenager trayvon martin even though he was acquitted. here's what she had to say. >> i think anyone would doubt that innocence. because i don't know the person that i've been married to. >> shellie zimmerman filed for divorce less than two months after her husband's acquittal. the couple's private dispute spilled into the public eye this month when shellie called police during a domestic dispute. no charges were filed after that incident. a passenger plane on its way to the uk was left on autopilot while both pilots slept last month. the information was just revealed by aviation officials in england. civil aviation authority has not announced which airline was involved. apparently the pilots agreed to take turns taking short naps. but at one point during the flight, one of the pilots woke up to discover they were both sleeping. a caa official says he does not expect the pilots will face

challenges. >> i say breast-feeding, first word that pops into your head? >> connection. >> connection. >> the closeness. >> difficult. >> nurtureing. >> i say nurtureing, too. >> and breast-feeding, but what i discovered was that it wasn't failure for me. i knew that i wasn't good at getting him to latch on and it was just, it was stressful. >> reporter: stressful and at times awkward when a baby's tummy clock doesn't match up with mommy's busy day. breast-feeding in public has long been a matter of debate. to test the climate in 2013, i set out with a hidden camera and one hungry baby. first stop the plaza hotel. next stop famous toy haven fao schwartz. >> within i first started and took it out, i felt like i was doing something wrong, you feel ashamed and embarrassed. but the more you do it, the more comfortable you feel. >> i even went to a fancy

department store. >> can you balance the screaming and the fussiness with how comfortable you feel breast-feeding in public and one always wins out. i want to bring my whole mommy and me class here. >> for some moms, the challenges can take their tolls. according to cdc, 77% of women in the united states begin breast-feeding their babies, but by three months, this number drops to 38% and at six months, only 16% of bebs are consumeing breast milk alone. >> breast-feeding was the most natural and healthiest thing i can do for the my kids. >> campaigns like this one launched by the department of health and human services are aimed at getting more women to stick with it. but what about women who simply can't breast feerksd like suzanne barsten, whose baby was allergic to breast milk. >> i have every breast-feeding problem under the sun. >> she says she felt alienated

after she started bottle feeding her kid's formula. >> it made me feel like i had failed. in my one job as a mom i had failed. >> realizing moms like her kneeled support, suzanne created a campaign for all women, no matter how they choose to feed their kids. still, there are those moments that can make natural feel unnatural. while harper was quietly having lunch at the apple store in midtown manhattan, i was approached by a store employee. >> do you want to go somewhere in private? >> i'm okay. is it okay i'm here? >> we use this for our customers. >> i agreed to move, while i never encountered problems in public, sometimes other moms do. >> i was asked to stop in a bank for someone to come over and asked to say, can you not do that here? it felt, i felt uncomfortable. >> before i had a child, i had no idea that breast-feeding could be such an emotional

. >> we are back at 8:45, a look at what is popping in pregnancy trends, yes, there are pregnancy trends, meanwhile, "today" correspondent jennifer hager has more. >> good morning, guys. in today's culture, it is no surprise parents are following along. in "today's" mom survey, more than 50% posted a picture of the newborn after hours of delivery. the one trend that popped out is a little out of step in our high-tech society. from gender reveal parties to live tweeting labor, parents are tweeting towards total exposure.

yet, one trend seems to be a throwback to a time when hashtag as a boy wasn't a part of our vocabulary. it's a choice many well known women have made, including singer/songwriter philanthropist elan is morriset. >> i didn't imagine myself have been the birth experience in the hospital. >> on christmas day 2010, she and her husband with the help of a mid-wife welcomed their son into their home literally. throughout her labor, morriset battled her pain. >> the experience was beyond pain. it was a transenddental experience. i just went into a whole other world and basically had to be the little soldier that i am and really focus on this new beautiful creature coming out of me. >> reporter: she cautions while it was the right decision for her and her family, the experience may not be right for

>> that is very good for weeds. it aerates the grass and picks up the leaves at the right time. pruneing, it's time to prune your boxwood, your shrubs. these are great long-handled prunersch sharp. you can snip off. >> how do you know you haven't pruned too much? >> it looks ugly. within it gets down to the stub, you have gone too far. >> i take off the protrudeing growth and not using the sheers. >> but when you have a plant like this, it's got flowers that are way past their prime, what do do you with those? >> take out your handy sheer, check this off. this is a perrenial. it will come back next year. make sure that goes into the compost, too. you will make a much nicer looking plant. i should get a couple of these off. it guess very quickly. pruneing is so much funnel. >> you put up with that lock, it will pay dividends in the

spring. >> you bet. this is another boxwood that you can make this into a nicer looking shrub by careful pruneing. >> you see, i like this look than when they get all leggy. >> leggy doesn't look so good. >> help me plant the bulbs, what are the rules? >> i did an article, usually you use a bulb planter. you dig little holes everywhere in your grass or garden. it's so time consumeing and exhausting. i dig out a whole area or find a hollow in the ground. >> or a trench. >> and amend the soil, put in bone meal. >> why bone meal? >> lime, it helps the bulbs grow. special first time lizers now for bulbs. once your soil is all amended, then you put this, put your bulbs in the ground. >> the round side down. >> the roots down. make sure you find root.

so many people put it this way, it makes it hard for the bulbs to go. put them in nicely spaced. then cover the whole garden with soil. >> you want to do this about how far in advance of the first frost? >> no, you can do it after the frost. >> you can? >> oh, sure. planting bulbs. you can do that up until december. can do it in january. >> let's get color. talk to me about here? these are planters. there is all kind of the plaernts. pots, beautiful boxes. why not bring the fall color into like your front yard, on your front porch, wherever you want to have a nice planter. so this is called a toutour. they come in different shapes. can you find them in the garden center. this is a fall grass. you can put gourds in there. plant colorful perrenials. >> that willing will nice. isn't that a pretty color? this is a fois kind of grass. all of that will look very, very nice outside.

she probably started less than nine weeks of lie. that's because every parent thinks it will make them sleep through the night. >> i got. yeah. >> i got to say, though, it works. i don't know if it was just the right time. >> i think you were lucky. truthfully today we recommend babies start between four and six months of life. actually, we recommend starting high allergy foods like eggs, dairy, peanut products before a year of age. because what we learned starting high allergy foods earlier will prevent food allergies. we've had it wrong the whole time. >> buddy, diane, did you guys, your kids were growing up, did you know anybody who had a peanut allergy? >> i didn't, no. >> katie, you probably did. >> a lot. yeah. yep. >> what is that about? >> right, so there is a hypothesis that people think because kids are not seeing

an east bay politician is hitting the streets this morning trying to drum up support for legislation that would ban public transit workers from striking. steve glazer has been talking to

bart riders and asking them to adopt a law similar to ones in major cities like new york and washington that would make transit strikes illegal. negotiations are ongoing, but it still looks like workers will strike on october 11th. they have to come up withan a contingency plan just in case. it would include limited bart service with managers drooiflg the trains. the plan, however, still needs approval from bart's board of directors. one thing to think about on today, this thursday, is high fire danger. let's check the forecast. >> thanks, marla. we do have high fire danger. especially for elevations above 1,000 feet. red flag warning is up until tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. temperatures today are going to be comfortable, warmer than yesterday. 74 degrees in san jose. 80 in livermore. san francisco, 69 for today. getting into the next couple of days, temperatures will warm up. saturday looks the warmest.
