towards getting the government back up and running and this morning, president obama is speaking out on continued gridlock with republicans. >> during the course of my presidency, i have bent over backwards to work with the republican party and have purposely kept my rhetoric down. when you have a situation in which a faction is willing potentially to default on u.s. government obligations, then we are in trouble. >> all right. so those comments capped a night of meetings at the white house between the president and congressional leaders. their first since the shutdown. but it ended with no deal. house speaker john boehner saying the president won't budge. >> the president reiterated one more time tonight that he will not negotiate. we had a nice conversation, a polite conversation, but at some point, we've got to allow the process that our founders

gave us to work out. >> on the senate side majority leader harry reid's latest offer to house republicans was rejected. he suggested a cease-fire deal calling to fully fund the government then negotiate on spending levels in order to pass a so-called clean bill just 17 republicans would have to break rank. but this morning there is expected to be another round of political ping-pong and for that nbc's danielle leigh joins us live in washington. good morning, danielle. what's ahead today. >> reporter: good morning, from the looks of things this government shutdown is going to last for at least one more day. lawmakers here on capitol hill are getting ready for another day of political ping-pong and for now both sides are digging in their heels. the republican-led house is going to continue to fund the government one piece at a time. on their to-do list fund

veterans, army reserve and the district of columbia and already voted to open u.s. national parks and tons of patients were turned away, 200, plus kids with cancer. now, the senate many dids say, no, they want to fund the whole government at once. meanwhile, on capitol hill the protests will continue. small business owners are coming here to tell lawmakers that the shutdown is bad for business. and the longer that the shutdown continues the more likely it becomes, that the fight to fund the government will coincide with another fight coming up to raise the debt limit so the nation can pay its bills. reporting live in washington, i'm danielle leigh, betty, back to you. more now on cnbc's john harwood's ex-dlus sieve one-on-one with the president. mr. obama discusses the current budget battle and has a grim message for people over the debt ceiling fight. >> wall street has been pretty calm about this. the reaction i would say generally speaking has been washington fighting, washington

posturing, yada, yada, yada. is that the right way to look at it. >> no, i think they should be concerned. one thing i know the american people are tired of is this constant governing from crisis to crisis. we have to stop doing that. let's get a budget that allows people to plan over the long term that allows us to deal with our fiscal problems in a sensible, reasonable way. >> well, so far wall street has virtually shrugged off the d.c. dysfunction. stocks rose tuesday and futures are flat this morning. we're also following a developing story off the southern coast of italy. at least 92 people are dead after a migrant boat sank overnight. the italian coast guard tells nbc news crews rescued more than 150 people but as many as 300 more are possibly still missing

at sea. all the migrants are believed to be from sub-saharan african countries. we'll keep an eye on this story. now to what was supposed to be three days of singing and laughing and preaching, well that turned tragic. eight people were killed when a north carolina church group's bus blew a tire then flipped over after slamming into a tractor trailer and suv. 14 people are injured and an investigation is underway. >> in my 17 years probably the most serious incident that i've ever been a part of involving three vehicles and the die names are great. >> at the front street church wednesday people were crying and hugging each other. six of the victims are believed to be members of the young at heart seniors program. they were coming home from a fall jubilee at the time of the crash and parishioners are shaken. to benjamin netanyahu's

president and congressional leaders since the shutdown made no headway and john boehner called the conversation polite but said the president will not budge. a federal judge orders a monitor to keep arizona sheriff joe arpaio's office from racial profiling especially of latinos when cracking down on illegal immigration. the monitor will review the maricopa county sheriff's policies and procedures and make sure the operations are carried out in a, quote, race neutral fashion. and this is something you have to see to believe. a florida fisherman released a 300-pound bull shark that he actually caught but it didn't start swimming and even though they are the most deadly and most likely to attack humans, he did not seem to care. he actually jumped right in the water to revive the shark. >> and almost killed. >> which makes no sense? discovery in southwest china, looks like it could be out of the pages of alice in wonderland. a farmer stumbled upon a group
