it is thursday, october 3, this is "today in the bay." it's 6:01. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news overnight. 94 people including two children and a pregnant woman are dead after a ship caught fire and capsized at sea. we're getting this new video in. hundreds of people were thrown into the water off the coast of the sicilian island. the ship was carrying african immigrants toward italy when those on board set off flares, the ship caught fire and capsized. about 500 people believed on board that ship. the coast guard says the ships and helicopters have been sent and local fishing boats on the scene trying to search the water for survivors. this is the second deadly migrant ship wreck this week off

the coast of italy. on monday 13 men drowned when their ship ran aground trying to reach southern sicily. >> a rescue operation going on right now around the world for five american kayakers who had some sort of emergency out on the waters. two of the five are brothervés all of them from colorado. but their guide is also an american and from san francisco. we got off the phone with a worker at the u.s. embassy there who says all have been found, all are safe and right now they are air lifted to safety. at this point we're still not sure what kip of emergency prompted this s.o.s., as we get more information we'll pass it along to you. >> 6:02. we're learning new details of the late night shooting on interstate 880 that left one person hurt. chp officer at the scene tells nbc bay area news he found the victim in a car and could see a bullet hole in the right side.

that car turned up in richmond close to 20 miles from where the shooting took place near the marina boulevard exit on interstate 880. christie smith joins us live along 880. how did the victims get all the way from san leandro to richmond before calling 911? >> reporter: that's the odd part in this story that has a couple -- what happened is these folks said look, we've been shot but they said it as you said about 20 miles up the road from where we're standing where police think it happened. between san leandro and hayward so it wasn't until maybe a 20 to 25-minute ride that they alerted investigators, called 911 and reported that someone fired into their car. they stopped the car at a hardware store parking lot. trying to piece together what sthet off. was it road rage. it started with an altercation

on northbound 880 somewhere around marina or davis street. >> there was some type of altercation that is still under investigation, between two vehicles, one a white truck and the other being that honda accord. an altercation where one shot was fired. through the passenger side of the honda striking the passenger. we believe in the leg. fairly minor injuries as far as we know. >> reporter: that passenger is believed to be a woman who was taken to john muir medical center. the chp is looking for the driver in that pickup truck. apparently they are also dealing with a language barrier. as soon as we get more we'll bring it to you. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> the u.s. secret service stepping in to assist oakland police in a violent robbery

case. we have new video to show you of the habitat for humanity site near the oakland coliseum. that site has around the clock security after four men robbed eight volunteers and they did -- volunteer workers, and robbed them at gunpoint. one of those men was pistol whipped. one suspect fired a round in the air before escaping in a nearby car. habitat for humanity says the victims are shaken up but back to work. >> 6:05. students in redwood city should see more officers when they show up the to class. it comes after a man tried to lure a student in his car. marla tellez is live with a look at the suspect police are looking for. >> reporter: good morning. police say this incident involves a 13-year-old student here at kennedy middle school. this is on goodwin avenue close to 84 and 101. one of the surprising details

about the story is this did not happen in the dark of night or in the early morning hours. it happened in broad daylight 10:00 a.m. monday morning between classes. since then police have been busy, come wake-up a sketch. the man who someone who looks like this drove into a staff parking lot 18 black pickup truck and pulled up along side the teenage boy. the man then asked the boy if he, quote, wanted some weed. he tried enticing the boy into his truck. the boy said no and kept walking and ran to the school office where he reported the incident. i just spoke to a woman this morning who was out walking her dog. she says she knows this area so well. when she heard the news she felt anger sfwlxt it's a great area. i lived here all my life. i'm surprised it happens here that they would think they could get away with coming to our

schools. i guess it's happening all over so we need to watch. >> reporter: as for a description, the man is black, approximately 30 years old with a medium build, unshaven and most notably he has a pretty severe sfar that runs through the middle of his right eye. police are stepping up patrols but also other local schools. if you have information call redwood city please. marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> warning simple, don't leave anything valuable in your car. that is the message the police are sending throughout morning. more than 70 cars were broken into. the most in five years. that's an average of one every 12 hours. investigators say the break-ins are happening at shopping centers, public parking lots and garages. 16 cars were broken into at the

oak creek apartments 1824-hour period. one couple, they were so shaken up they asked us to hide their identity. >> they broke the window, they took out everything that was in the car, threw it out. because they couldn't find anything that was valuable. >> palo alto police say most of the cars being broken into are rental cars. they have been seeing similar trends the past sufrl months. >> time to take a look at the forecast. clear skies make for a beautiful vis the bought cool start. >> it's going to warm up. >> once the sun comes up a nice temperature recovery now. clear skies over san jose. a pre-sun rise looking nice and chilly in the north bay. we're watching the temperatures down to 41 degrees.

dry air is efficient, losing all of the heat that we gain from the day before. you can see it's down to 41 in napa. 60 in fairfield. the winds have picked up. you can see the direction of the winds north of 14 that's going to keep things dry. skies clear, they are going to stay that way for a while as high pressure builds in and wind speeds interesting to watch as we go through the day in the north and east bay valleys and hill tops, wind speed sustained. those are wind speeds above 35 miles per hour at times so. hilltop location above 1,000 feet later this evening, the red flag warning. it's going to continue into saturday before the winds back off and our temperatures warm up into the weekend. here is 75 in san jose, 76 in livermore. 71 in san francisco and look at oakland as the winds turn off shore toward the water our temperatures climb. low 80s around the bay.

up 80s, the temperatures look toasty inland for the start of the weekend. >> you did talk about the winds now and then developing throughout day. so i want to talk about that. we have the metering lights and the backup. they fill in the toll plaza. nine minutes for the lights to have been on here. another angle of the bay bridge looking at the new eastern span. it's still new. happened this year. a smooth drive and westbound with the taillights. the camera was shaking a little. we've seen that happen from time to time as the winds kick in no. advisories and no problems across the bridge, the san mateo bridge action we watch the high rise. there are speed sensors, the east shore freeway. and throughout the maze. this shows you counter commute south 238 we had a crash. that has cleared without injury. over to 580 but a westbound 580 and north 23 wrat the red is.

the north winds have brought in drier air. you see our temperatures into the north bay now t taxpayer is 37 degrees. that is the temperature that the thermometer is trying to drop toward. now down to 41. big difference in fairfield and santa rosa. the winds have increased in those two locations. so dry from napa to fairfield. you'll warm 20 degrees. and you can see the north wind at 14, we'll see more of that accelebrating as you get into the afternoon. a lot of snow to the rockies. and high pressure building back across the pacific, giving us these gusty winds. and warm things up more so friday into saturday. wind speed the story. look at the area here in orange. near 30 miles per hour. as we head into this time tomorrow morning, now you're looking at gusty winds around the bay area hilltops. same locations that see the red

blag warning starting at 6:00 tonight. overnight we see these come back up. not the case when the winds are out of the north. we'll stay dry heading into friday with the fire danger on the increase. the winds will be picking up this afternoon, close to 80 in pleasanton. around oakland, 78. 71 in san francisco and after 41 to start in napa, 75 later on this afternoon. gusty in the hills, that's story later today into friday. which is going to allow our temperatures to rebound. by sunday cooling por the end of the weekend. >> watching a build, this is north 101 under that 680/280. a typical pattern. on the maps we don't see a lot of slowing, we see it where it

shows the live shot. it's around 50 at the worst north of our shot. that will smooth out. slowing around the airport as well but not a major concern. the rest of the south bay flowing nicely. down here 680 and 880, pretty well. we see slowing toward mission boulevard. there was a crash before you get to 880. dy swing the camera around. i couldn't find the crash, it looked like the interchange was clear but this is south 880 in toward that same area. so you see the volume building. speeds coming down below 60 miles per hour between the dumbarton bridge and mission. the rest of the east bay, nothing i expected for the tri-valley. the castro valley y, now things calm down, slowing from red wood up to the 880 interchange. and similar build to that

about with 100 bikers rallied near a hospital where a motorcyclist was being treated for two broken legs and spinal injuries after being run over by an suv on sunday. that confrontation here is a look. it happened after one of the bikers and suv bumped into each other as cyclists then swarmed that vehicle. the suv tried to take off and then does and hits one of the bikers. the bikers then chased down the suv until it gets stuck in traffic. that's when one of the bikers jumped off his motorcycle and used his hell neat smash out the driver's window. the driver was in the car with his wife and baby daughter. the group then pulled the man out and beat him up in front of his wife and 2-year-old child. two bikers they have been arrested. one has been released from custody. so far the driver of the suv not facing any charges. now, the biker who was run over has hired los angeles-based attorney gloria allred to

continuing to look for survivors. >> another tragic scene, the first pictures from a deadly plane crash in nigeria this morning. a total of 11 died, one person did survive. the plane was taking off heading to a town about 200 miles away. the aviation minister there telling police on scene the plane could not lift off properly, so it simply came down. no word if any americans were onboard or who the sole survivor is. >> the shutdown is in effect. despite a meeting with the top leaders of congress we are three days into the government shutdown. and this morning it appears the sticking point is still the showdown owe skrer the affordable care act. the speaker of the house john boehner says senate democrats could agree to a bipartisan conference to negotiate a deal that could include major changes to obama care.

senate majority leader harry reid says democrats should only negotiate after passing a clean short-term bill that does not include funding delays to the president's health care law. >> the stock market getting nervous with good reason. as the government shutdown wears on, but a debt default would be much worse. a live look at the big board there, it's early but things down. experts expect the shutdown will take a small bite out of the economic growth. the dow sank 90 points over the afternoon trading wednesday. messing with the debt limit would alarm investors around the world who lend the united states trillions of dollars. here's the deal we want to point out to keep a borrowing money and paying wills, congress must raise the federal debt limit which is now 16.7 trillion dollars.

the treasury department trying to avoid borrowing money to keep under that amount. the treasury secretary says the government will be out of options and will be out of them by october 17. the s&p says if october 17 county passes without a debt limit deal, it could classify the u.s. as being in sovereign default. that downgrade would send the stock market into a tail spin. >> here is something we can afford. a look at the forecast. rob's got it for us. a beautiful sunrise. >> not too windy now but later we'll see the winds accelerating around all of the bay area, especially in the higher hilltops. gusts above 30 miles per hour. chilly temperatures, 41 degrees in napa. 60 in fairfield. the winds have started to increase north at 14. west wind, and mainly clear skies outside. not going to see much in the way

of clouds. notice these wind speeds by 2:00 this afternoon, bay area locations about 10 to 20 miles per hour winds but the hill tops heading into this evening and overnight you can see the areas showing up in red. the same areas that see a red flag warning due to dry conditions. taking us through about 6:00 a.m. saturday morning. the gusts could get up to 45 miles per hour by tomorrow morning. today's temperatures looking nice. 71 in san francisco, 78 in oakland. 75 in san jose. temperatures warming up as we start the weekend, then the winds ease off, they will come back in the form after sea breeze. monday low clouds and cooler temperatures next week. >> over my shoulder 101 northbound your typical build. so we'll move to the east bay, show you where we have the tri-valley slowing from 580 and

680. that kicked in over the last few so that's a change. and also heavier drive for westbound 580 getting in approaching red wood road. we have some early slowdowns for folks as well toward 238. there was a crash counter commute, that was a distraction that caused extra slowing. that will hold up some getting to the san mateo bridge that might provide a break. it's moved into the south bay. look at that, no issues. farther north we look at oakland and 880. the volume builds with the taillights past high street and smooth close to the limit. until you get to the curve heading to the bay bridge toll massa. we're picking up a few more cars. a smooth drive through san mateo and into and out of san

francisco. back to you. >> 6:35. just in, palo alto police releasing this sketch of one of the suspects they say violently attack add man over the weekend. take a look. 37-year-old victim says she was having car trouble, pulled over to the side of the road near alma street just before midnight on saturday. this man along with another suspect suddenly attacked him cutting him on the arm with a knife several times. police say they believe this was a random attack because the suspects did not rob or try to carjack the victim. >> if you happen to live near the concord naval weapons station going to be scary. brace for loud noises in less than a half hour. starting at 7:00 the station will be blowing up some fuses and rocket accelerators. the fire department will be on seen to make sure everything is safe and sound. it will be loud. according to the blog you should

at 6:40, 42 people are dead and more than 1600 injured as deadly hornets swarm central china. we warn you this video may be difficult to watch. some parents have deep holes in their skin because of the attacks. 37 victims are in critical condition. the attacks are from the world's largest hornet known as the asian giant hornet. they are roughly the size of aac human thumb and they have a black tooth that can burrow into the skin. they are a lot more aggressive in september and october because it's breeding season. officers are actually deployed to try to destroy all of the hives. >> 42 people dead. that's unreal.

cooling as the winds back in the opposite direction. we begin next week with the temperatures cooling off monday into tuesday. >> we have a couple of issues heading to the bay area bridges. the first one crossing the bay is the golden gate bridge. folks access to or from there a lot of folks use the mcarthur tunnel. we know about that. around washington boulevard. both directions i warn you there is a tree down in that tunnelle. no details on which direction is most affected. expect some slowing, however, through the other route you're okay heading west toward the golden great bridge. another issue for the bay bridge here, a lot of congestion here. it was looking really good from the maze into the city but now we have this issuesh look at the live camera.

there it is, we found the glashing lights. there is a crash involving a motorcycle and another vehicle in the middle lane. as folks are merging that maybe what played -- compressing there and causing a problem out from oakland across the bay toward san francisco. the metering lights are going to slow. big delays at the bay bridge. the san mateo bridge westbound is your alternate. we see the burst of traffic kick in so you're slow down through this toll plaza. expect more traffic to head here with the crash. >> 6:51. students in redwood city expect to see more officers when they show up to masses. this coming after a man tried to lure a student in his car. marla tellez is live at the kennedy middle school with a look at the suspect police are looking for. >> reporter: good morning. police say this happened right here on campus here at kennedy

middle school not far from 101 and woodside. a nice neighborhood where this happened, i have spoke tune a few women who live nearby out for a walk and they tell me they are surprised this happened because it's such a tight-knit neighborhood that they say is vigilant. police have released this sketch of the suspect so take a look. a man who looks like this drove onto campus into the parking lot. pulled up along side the 13-year-old student walking to his class. the suspect was in a black pickup truck. he asked if the boy wanted marijuana. the boy said no. he tried enticing the boy. the boy kept walking, ran to the main office where he told staff what just happened. a woman who has lived close by her entire life says she is more than just concerned.

on murder charges even though lamar's body has never been found. lamar disappeared on the way to school in march of 2012. garcia torres' plea had been denied because both are still sifting through evidence. also charged with carjacking and attempted kidnapping. >> the alleged master mind of a mastiff online drug marketplace expected to be in court in a san francisco courtroom. ross ulbricht was arrested tuesday afternoon on drug and computer hacking charges. he stands accused of trying to hire a hitman. according to documents he used a hidden website called the silk road as a bizarre to sell hoyrn to marijuana. all of the transactions were

paid with bit coin designed to be anonymous. ulbricht ran silk road from an apartment on hickory street and internet cafe. the department of justice seized the site and up to $4 million in bit coin. >>seven days and counting. b.a.r.t. and its unions have one week to come up with an agreement to try to prevent another strike. the two sides will be back at the bargaining table this morning to try to hammer out a deal. b.a.r.t.'s unions and management continue this over several issues including pay increases. even the length of the contract. b.a.r.t.'s chief gornter says the two sides are $100 million apart. the 60-day cooling off period ends thursday meaning workers could walk off as early as friday morning. state lawmakers are efforting a vote on a measure that would force the unions to honor a no
