that has law enforcement concerned. plus, why the crews had to race to get the stadium ready for the game. a shutdown in san carlos. how long crews will have the gas entirely shut off in an area deemed unsafe. we begin with a fire burning on treasure island near the bay bridge. i'm diane dwyer. >> and i'm terry mcsweeney. take a live look at the fire. you see it there on the right-hand side. starting to die down now, get a handle on it. it's burning right near where the old and new bridge come together. chp shut down two eastbound lanes on the bridge. one has since been reopened. take a look at pictures from just a while ago. you can see those flames from quite a ways away about half an hour ago. the westbound i-80 ramp to treasure island last time we checked was closed, still, because san francisco fire using the road to attack the fire from above. crews are having a hard time getting water to use on what's

being described as a vegetation fire. warning drivers, including those who were at the 49ers game tonight, to expect delays as traffic is already backed up through san francisco. nbc bay area's kimberly terry on the bridge gathering information. we'll have a live report from her tonight at 11:00. right now we want to bring in andy slaughter and how the weather might affect this fire. >> the winds have been very calm at 5 to 15 miles per hour, and usually we can see winds really gusting, and that would really make this fire and the folks trying to fight it a lot more treacherous. but the good news, winds are calm so they should be able to get a handle on this. bad news, we're still talking about one of the driest years on record. a lot of smoke going into the air and a lot of winds to the west pushing a lot of smoke into the east bay in places like emoryville to places like oakland, and eventually it will

travel to places like fremont and the silicon valley. we'll keep you updated on where that fire continues to burn. getting you drid for that 7-day forecast in just a bit. >> thanks, anthony. we'll have a live report throughout this newscast on what's going on there at bathe y bridge and the fire. here's a look at the coliseum where the raiders game started honestly about an hour ago. it's considered to be the latest kickoff in nfl history. the reason for the late start is directly related to the baseball playoffs. it also means thousands of football fans won't head home until close to midnight. monty francis is there for us. hello, monty. >> this is a late thing for the raiders and the nfl. they had to convert the coliseum from a baseball field to a football field in less than 24 hours, and they did it in record time. >> into left field, a base hit! >> reporter: within minutes of the a's victory last night,

crews were already starting to work to transition from baseball to football. this time lapse video shows just how big a job it was, a task that would normally take two to three days. a team of 250 people worked all night and all day. the raiders were originally scheduled to play at 1:25 this afternoon, but kickoff was pushed to 8:35 tonight to give crews enough time to get the coliseum ready for the raiders. >> you're taking down flagpooul poles, putting up goalposts. >> reporter: raiders fans had already gathered in the parking lot to tailgate at 3:00 in the afternoon, just as crews were finishing their work on the coliseum. >> our record time is going to be this one. beginning to end, about 18 hours. >> reporter: because so many fans arrived early, they also had a lot more time to drink before the game. and even before kickoff, sheriff's deputies arrested some

fans for public intoxication. security is tight and law enforcement is gearing up for any potential problems. >> this could be a late game. there's going to be a lot of people leaving at a very late hour, so everyone has been briefed for looking for those impaired drivers. but it's up to the individual to take the responsibility not to drive impaired and plan before you celebrate. >> reporter: just the typical problems to report so far with intoxicated fans, some illegal fireworks, but so far no major problems. we expect this game will end close to midnight, and law enforcement is hoping that it stays that way. live in oakland tonight, monty francis, nbc bay area news. >> monty, thank you. we'll have an update later this evening as fans begin to head home. there's a live picture from the oakland coliseum. could the raiders move to concord? it's apparently a possibility if the team can't get a new stadium in oakland. according to the san francisco

chronicle, raiders owner mark davis took a tour friday of the possible new location. the five new acres of land is at the depot station. the navy is still cleaning up the site, but concord is looking for ways to redevelop the land. the land is just minutes from the north concord bart station, which is something mark davis reportedly likes. now to a developing story on the peninsula. pg&e confirms it is shugtting down a natural gas pipeline in san carlos city officials believe could be unsafe. that pipeline known as 147 runs along britain eva long 280. the worry is that it could fail, and that brings back memories of the line that did fail in 2010. they had to shut down the 84-year-old line so it could be inspected. people living near there said they're glad they're taking a closer look and pg&e customers will still have natural gas service after the shutdown.

>> it might not be the most convenient way to do it, but they do have a system in place of other pipes that could be used if line 187 is kpleecomple out of use. >> the shutdown is expected to be completed tomorrow while workers talk to the city about next steps. a man died in a car crash overnight in san jose, but his two passengers somehow survived. the san jose fire department shared on twitter this violent accident. the suv was split in half. the accident happened about 2:00 this morning on blossom hill right by oak ridge mall. police say the man was speeding and crashed into a light pole. crews rushed the two female passengers to the hospital with serious injuries. the accident also caused a power outage to the traffic signals at that intersection. crews say it will take more time to get the lights back on because of the extensive rewiring needed. drivers, of course, had to treat the intersection as a four-way stop which always causes some confusion and traffic problems. police are investigating a fatal hit and run in redwood city that left a bicyclist dead.

police say it happened last night just after 7:00 on the 1200 block of marshall street near veterans boulevard and main street. when police arrived, they found the victim on the ground. medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. a witness at a nearby apartment building described what she saw. >> he went on the right, and the car just suddenly crashed on the biker, and he didn't stop at the stop sign right there. he just flew because he was scared, and he just left the man right there. >> that suspect is described as bald with a mustache and beard and tattoos down his arm. he was driving a dark-colored minivan. and coming up next, some very fancy porta pottys for the raiders game today. we'll show you the unusual promotion. plus the stale mate in washington. plus the flood that caused people to evacuate their homes in southern china. a very warm weekend.

breaking news to tell you about right now, an earthquake that shook up parts of the east bay. the usgs is reporting a 3.1 magnitude quake centered two miles northeast of berkeley hit just before 9:30, so about 12 minutes ago. so far no reports of damage or injury, but a lot of people calling in saying they felt it. we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. more than half a million people have been evacuated from southeastern china after a typhoon slammed into the region. the typhoon had winds of up to 84 miles an hour, then slow before weakening to a tropical storm. power has been knocked out to hundreds of thousands of people, flights have been canceled and high-speed rail service is suspended as well.

now to egypt where several neighborhoods in cairo have been turned into combat zones. more than 50 people were killed in raging street battles today as supporters of the ousted islamist president faced off against backers of the military that threw them out. the fighting took place on a national holiday meant to celebrate the military for the prowess in the 1973 mideast war with israel. now to the latest in the government shutdown. still no sign of a breakthrough tonight. republicans are standing firm in their demands to delay the president's health care law. democrats pointed out that law took 18 months to pass and survived a supreme court challenge, but the republicans are arguing the laws could be did he ever stating to the economy. bryan moore has the story from washington. >> reporter: with the government shutdown heading into week 2, house republicans say they're eager to negotiate with president obama. but they're not giving up on their fight to use a budget bill as a way to chip away at obama care. >> i thought the fight would be over the debt ceiling, but, you

know, working with my members, they decided, let's do it now. the fact is, this fight was going to come one way or the other. >> reporter: texas senator ted cruz a pivotal figure in this fight. they said the democrats will have to bend before october 17, when the government hits its spending limit. >> the debt ceiling historically has been among the best leverage that congress has to rein in the executive. >> reporter: treasury secretary jack lew says that is playing with fire. >> on october 17, we will exhaust our borrowing capacity, and at that point i have nothing else in the drawer. >> reporter: in a rare bipartisan display, the house unanimously agreed on saturday so retroactively pay furloughed government workers. but those paychecks won't go out until after the shutdown is over. how long that might be, no one can say. bryan moore, nbc news, washington. eric swalwell left for a quick trip to the bay area with

his constituents in the shutdown. he's in the 5th district. he held a town meeting in dublin. about 80 people attended. swalwe says he's confident about ending the standoff. >> all we have to do is an up or down vote. do we budget at the same level the senate has agreed to and that will pass. i'm optimistic. i'm not giving up. >> swalwell headed back to washington, d.c. just a couple hours ago. more details on a wildfire burning near a military base. they're containing the lines around camp pendleton. the fire has scorched 1500 acres of dry brush and damaged buildings. more than 1500 people were evacuated. most are back, though. it's currently at 15% containment. a wildfire on the campus of uc santa cruz has damaged a grove of redwood trees. it took firefighters six hours to put out the fire in an open

area near heller drive and meyer drive. it was reported about 6:00 this morning. it spread into the grove of redwood trees, some of those trees 90 feet tall. there was damage to some buildings. no one was hurt. they think a hollowed out tree stump may be to blame. we're going to check in with andy on the weather. an unusually warm day today. >> it was sunny across bathe ba area, but all that is going to change. we're talking about temperatures going down 15 to 20 degrees this week. 85 in oakland, 83 in san jose, 79 in santa cruz. our warm spot today, gilroy tapping out at 93. san francisco got up to 83 downtown. the average high there is 70, but here's what's coming our way tomorrow. there will abe cold front moovrg through and that's going to drop our temperatures about 10 degrees tomorrow, so san francisco back to 74 degrees

tomorrow. a little closer to average, and those westerly winds really going to help in cooling everybody across the board tomorrow. it will become a little more breezy tomorrow as a cold front slides through. very comfortable in san francisco. 65 in san mateo, san jose at 69 degrees. a few high, thin clouds drifting overhead. really didn't impact our weather but made for a beautiful sunset. here comes our next system. i want to draw your attention to the two areas we're watching on this map. the first is our cold front. that's going to move through tomorrow, and that's going to cool us, move us through that cold air. but this second swirl you see behind the first swirl, that's the upper area low pressure, and that's going to be the thing that drops down as we head toward wednesday that's going to cool us even more, and it's going to squeeze out what's left in the atmosphere and we may see showers come wednesday. you'll notice that first cold front is going to scoot to our north tomorrow afternoon, so we're not expecting any rain tomorrow. it will be a dry day, but those

wi winds will really start to kick up as we head to tuesday and wednesday. low fog tuesday and wednesday. that pressure scoots to our south. we're not talking about a whole locality of rain, ju-- lot of r few sprinkles here and there. not everybody will see the rain on wednesday, but have that umbrella ready just in case. we have two systems that have moved through since fall began, the first on september 20, the second just about a week ago. we picked up close to an inch with that. this system is going to be more like the system we saw about two to three weeks ago where we only got trace amounts in napa, so this system coming up again not going to offer a whole lot in terms of rainfall but definitely enough to get the ground wet. anything we can get at this point we will definitely take. 82 in san jose for tomorrow, 85 in gilroy, 84 in livermore. fremont 79, alba you'll be at 78

it has been almost six months since the twin bombings along the boston marathon route that killed three people and left many others horribly maimed. that phrase boston strong we heard a lot of after the boston tragedy today remains the mantra for victims of the attack. today we saw just how strong for two of them taking the next big steps in their lives. nbc's lester holt reports. >> good morning, everybody!
