no house and jumped on to a white mercedes. we are told everybody in the house made it out safely and no firefighters were injured. crews have put the fire out and they will stay on the scene in case there are any flareups. 6:01. a developing story affecting hundreds of thousands of commuters as b.a.r.t. negotiations continued yet again this morning. the trains are running and they will be all day long. even though a deal has not been reached. the threat of a strike still looms. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. an all too familiar story for riders this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it is a very familiar story i wish i had different news for you but it is the same. strike averted, talks continue. the trains are rolling again. i've been talking with commuters here in west oakland.

they say, right now, they are just plain tired. they have had to change their sleeping patterns to find out if the trains are rolling again. b.a.r.t.'s management and union broke off talks very late last night, just before 1:00 in the morning when b.a.r.t.'s gm was among those walking out of the caltrans building where the negotiations are going on. the details are unclear. there is a gag order in place. a federal mediator is keeping both sides bargaining and says he is seeing some good progress. after b.a.r.t.'s last and final offer, the union made a counteroffer at west oakland. i am running into some of the same commuters that i ran into a couple of days ago. how do you feel about having to go through this? >> it is really a bummer. i really hope they get this together, because commuters like

me. working downtown, it is really hard to park and so inconvenient. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. ridership has been affected between friday and tuesday. ridership is down by about 23,000 people. or down about 5%. maybe some people are telecommuting. in the past, we have seen this parking lot fill up pretty quickly. this morning, still quite a few spaces available. that's the latest from here reporting live in west oak lala. >> visit nbcbayarea.com. at the top of the page, you'll find a tab called b.a.r.t. strike resources. you see it right there. this has all the information you need to get through a potentially frustrating day. traffic mess. >> we will be here for you. as for a.c. transit, governor brown says he may have to step in to avoid a strike that could affect passengers as early as tomorrow. a.c. transit asking governor brown to issue you a 60-day, cooling off period like he did in august for b.a.r.t. they say they plan to walk off the job at 12:01 tomorrow morning if an agreement is not reached. more than 1600 union members want higher wages and better health benefits. a.c. transit serves more than 170,000 riders each day. 6:04. happening now, a san jose father continues to search for his two missing daughters. 16-year-old madeline and her 13-year-old sister, emily, were last seen sunday night at a church event in san jose.

chase cain is live at valley christian high school where both daughters attend high school. >> reporter: i can't imagine what this father is going through. one of the big struggles here is that no one is sure exactly what happened. did these two girls run away or did someone possibly take these two girls? we don't know. what we do know, they have not been seen since sunday night. we want to show you that picture. 16-year-old madeline, 13-year-old emily dorsish. they were last seen at a church event around 7:30. no one saw them leave or get in the car with anyone. no one saw someone take these girls. sunday night, their father did file a missing person's report. he created a facebook page.

the father, friends, family, is hopeful someone will have seen these two girls somewhere. >> we're going on 72 hours and i'm beside myself. i don't know where they5a are. we have an unconfirmed report that maybe they were cited at the caltrans station in palo alto. somebody filed a report. we are trying to get some information from the sheriff's department in san mateo. but we don't know. >> reporter: the father doesn't know. it seems no one knows at this point. you saw a missing personings poster. volunteers from the church have been putting up the posters across the area. they started doing that last night. no doubt, they will continue to do so today as school gets ready to resume at valley christian where they attended school. san jose police are looking into this. they have spread the word to other law enforcement agencies around the bay in case anybody cease them. madeline and emily, 16 and 13 years old not seen in 2 1/2

days. if you have seen them or know where they are, please call your local police. chase cain, "today in the bay." thank you very much. a baby and toddler safe this morning after somebody stole the car they were riding in. the 1-year-old and the 3-year-old were in the back seat of a parked car near the corner of folsom and 22nd street in san francisco ace mission district. about 6:00 last night, a woman stole that car with both young children inside. police say they found the car abandoned about two miles away. good news. neither children were hurt. so far, no arrests have been made. it is 6:07. the family of the woman whose body was found in a stairwell at san francisco general hospital is now calling for a new state law. it took more than two weeks to find lynn spaulding's body, which was just a floor away from her hospital room. family members think if there were cameras at all hospital entrances and exits,

investigators would have known she never left the building. they are now asking for legislation to require hospitals to install those cameras. in response to the incident, san francisco general hospital will check the fire well daily. in addition, security staff must check any time the alarm is triggered and deactivate manually. right now, time for a little check on the weather giving you a live look outside at the eastern span of the bay bridge with all those lights dancing out there. i call those eye candy to inspire you visually and with all your senses. christina loren. it is cold out there to start. all your arrows, wind speeds, pointing out to sea. another day of a robust offshore

flow. for us, no marine influence. temperatures, very similar in san francisco and san jose today. we are going to climb to the low 80s here. in san jose, 82 degrees in the heat of the day. this is where we herdeare heade. 54, san jose. headed toward a comfortable second half of the day. between about 10:00 and 12:00, temperatures are going to really start to warm up. at noontime, 73 degrees in antioch, 75, livermore, 75 in fremont. we'll round out the day at 88 degrees in fairfield. getting very warm out there. dress in layers for today. a man who is already dressed in layers. mike inouye, how many pieces do you have on? >> my suit jacket, my shirt, superman thing i always wear underneath and then the

6:13. b.a.r.t. trains decided not to strike. crews keeping an eye on any flare-ups after a house and car catch fire. everybody made it out safely. >> today is the last day groups can submit bids to take over moffett field. groups have to pay half a million dollars to put their name in the mix. 6:14. apple has asked its factories to slow down production on the new colorful iphone, the 5-c. >> scott mcgrew, is this a sign the phone is not selling well? it could be or it may be possible that they gauged demand just right, ramped up production

at start and some type of natural slowdown. the wall street journal says the cupertino company has told its chinese factory to reduce production of the 5-c. the 5-s, with the fancy fingerprint scanner is still on back order. futures call for a gain on the dow this morning. let's talk about default. the treasury has said the witching hour is midnight, when they estimate the u.s. will run out of cash and we will be completely broke. there are a couple of things that could keep us from defaulting in a literal sense.

first, still money coming in. that's going to last for a while but we do spend more than we take in. the biggest thing we have to pay out iskhkñ social security. we stop sending checks to social security recipients. that will gain a couple of days. then you could stop paying the military. you have to service the debt. if you don't service the debt and pay out social security checks, that's a much worse long-term option. >> how about if you just rig a deal. come on, guys and gals. >> so many people impacted so hard. >> 6:16. christina loren is here to tell us about the day that gives us everything, cold start, warm

finish. >> beautiful rebound. thanks for waking up with us on a wednesday morning. wednesdays can be rather difficult. we want to help you get over the hump. temperatures right now in the upper 30s in santa rosa. novato, 37 degrees. we are taking up that warm, north wind. as a result, your temperature has jumped from 37 to 45 in the past hour. as we head throughout the day today, the winds will continue to increase. it's that offshore flow combined with the building ridge of high pressure. that means we are going to see continues today above average yet again. offshore flow will persist. today will be the warmest. we will slowly start to drop off. temperatures work like this. 88 degrees. a hot finish in fairfield. 83, gilroy, 81, santa teresa and 81 degrees in fremont. beautiful conditions in san francisco. 77 degrees out there today.

the half moon bay pumpkin festival, saturday and sunday. if you want sunshine and warmth, saturday is your day. overcast sky returns on sunday. temperatures will fall back into the 60s. as we head deeper into next week, temperatures are going to stay nice and cool. so if you have any last summertime weather hurras that you would like to take care of, one pair of shorts, mike inouye, i'm talking to you. >> i will wear all of my shorts all at once to get it out of my system. we have a crash, vasco at tesla. a single car and no injuries. i will track that. a smooth drive through castro valley.

we'll expect more slowing. north 238 approaching 880, i just got word of a crash here. three vehicles on the shoulder. anything on the shoulder means the backup will form. another crash, south 880. that's more of an issue if you are heading over the bay. if you are heading to the san mateo bridge and get there without any problems, a smooth drive across the peninsula. 92, 84, 101 and 280 move smoothly. 92 is on my mind, because we have those pumpkins at half moon bay. that will be crowded from now until the end of the month. this is only area we are seeing speeds come down in towards 50

miles per hour. right around 60 miles per hour. the bay bridge, toll plaza, metering lights. the big backup. the earlier stall has cleared. the eastshore freeway. if you are coming to the 50s as you are approaching the berkeley curve. back to you. let's talk about dreams coming true for steve jobs from a garage to this. plans to build apple's new spaceship headquarters in cupertino now moving forward. we can tell you, there is still one more hurdle that they have to clear before the construction starts "today in the bay's" bob riddell is live in cupertino where city leaders will take a live vote next month. good morning. >> reporter: goo whwhat happene night, they unanimously approved their plans to build the headquarters. the rules require city council to meet one more time, that vote scheduled for november 15th.

everyone expects this to pass. later this year, apple could begin construction of headquarters that will look like none other ever built. you are looking at rendering their 2.8 million square foot office space. that would be encased in a four-story ring of glass and steel that looks very much like a spaceship, one that would be home to more than 14,000 employees. while some#dztizens expressed concerns last night about the impact this new location would have on traffic, many are supportive believing apple's unique headquarters design could become an iconic landmark in the valley. >> what they are bringing for the future of cupertino, particularly for our young people, brightest minds in the world, people that are going to come from around the country and around the world, to share their beliefs and eye deals aideals t and enhance our community.

new details about the baggage handler arrested on charges of making two dry ice bombs that exploded. 28-year-old decarlo bennett is being held on $1 million bail. he worked for a ground crew company. the motive has not been released publicly. sources tell our sister station in l.a. that it could stem from a turf war of sorts between ground crews. bennett took dry ice from a plane, put it in a plastic bottle and placed it in an employee restroom sunday night. another bomb was found on a runway outside the international terminal monday. no one was injured in either blast. of course, we've all had headaches at airports but very few people ever run into this one. how about a kangaroo hopping its way right into a terminal. >> that is what happened in this airport in melbourne, australia. the kangaroo hopped past travelers and took refuge in a

deal that fits within the $57 million four-year final offer that b.a.r.t. issued to its unions on sunday. negotiations are ongoing. trains are running today for the entire day. >> happening right now, the senate literally scrambling on a last-minute deal here. the country's debt limit deadline looms. we take a look at the countdown clock hanging over everybody's head. the deadline is midnight eastern, 9:00 our time. you can see right now, 14 hours, 28 minutes and 37 seconds away. could be wrapped up by dinnertime here. so within a matter of several hours, the key is going to be getting enough republicans to go along. if not, if we go over this fiscal cliff, so to speak, fitch, one of the big credit agencies, has already said it may look at down grading our credit rating. president obama very involved in this. he is going to be sitting down with the vice president. he is going to be meeting with treasury secretary, jack lew. he writes the checks for america. we won't see a default immediately he has said. there is a big bill coming in next week on social security and several of them at the end of the month and the first of november. he will meet with john kerry today as well. a lot going on in washington.

tomorrow. we'll see how these things shape up. we'll look at the map and see a smooth drive across. we have a little slowing down the eastshore freeway, pretty typical for west 80. no surprises here. the earlier stall has cleared from the bay bridge. we have a crash involving three cars which quickly move to the shoulder. north 238. south 880 really bogs down out of san leandro down into hayward. an earlier crash has moved to the shoulder as you are approaching highway 92. any distractions, like 238, cause more of a backup as that traffic starts to hit that area heading south for 883 in hayward. an easy drive through the tri-valley for 580, 84 and 680. see the speeds dipping down in the upper 50s through pleasanton and sunol. northbound routes, for 101 to

capital expressway. towards 680 and 87 starts to show some slowing. as we look across the bay, the peninsula drive moving at the limit. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:36 right now. updates from the ice. sharks defenseman, dan boyle, expected to return to san jose after a brutal hit that sent him to the hospital during last night's game. boyle, hit from behind. you can see his head hit the boar. we'll show you it to you in slow motion. a scary scene after he gets banged there. he was laying motionless on the ice for several minutes before finally being carted off on a stretcher. this morning, boyle reportedly, okay, moving and responding to doctors. the team does plan to bring him back to san jose while the rest of the sharks travel to dallas. the player that hit boyle, max la pierre, who could be suspended. logan coutour telling reporters, he was yelling at them from the

more than 100 dead after an earthquake struck an island in the philippines. almost 300 people were reportedly injured after the 7.2 quake struck. the power is also cut off in some areas. >> also, on the international scene this morning, rescue workers in japan searching for survivorses a deadly typhoon makes its way across the country. at least 14 people now confirmed dead, more than 50 others are missing. that typhoon sweeping across the island of izu oshima. you can see the complete devastation. an estimated 30 inches of rain fell in 24 hours.

town officials say many killed were buried by mudslides at least nine crew members and two more missing after a cargo ship south off the coast of south korea. it was anchored near a port. high waves caused it to hit a seawall yesterday afternoon. there were 19 crew members of board, eight found safe. the ship is owned by a chinese firm, set to leave for japan. 6:41. right now, we'll tell you about b.a.r.t. negotiations that are stretching out and stretching passenger nerves very thin. >> that's all i can say. i'm tired. you have some divorces that are over quicker than this. >> well said, young lady. we have some new details about the back and forth battle as the trains continue to roll down the track. that's next in a live report. also, two south bay sisters missing for days. how their father is turning to

parked in the driveway outfront. it caused some power lines to come down. crews have put the flames out. they are staying on the scene in case the flames flare back up a developing story to tell you about affecting thousands of commuters as b.a.r.t. negotiations continue yet again. now, this morning, it's traithe will be running all day long. we give you a look at the west oakland station even though no deal has been reached. the threat of a strike still looms. west oakland station. commuters are frustrated. they want to know why it keeps happening like this. it seems like both sides keep talking but they just can't seem to reach a deal. sola so last night talks broke off between 1:00 in the morning. among those walking out was b.a.r.t.'s general manager. they talked for about 12 hours, overnight, both sides. 17 hours the night before. a federal mediator got both sides to stay at the table. there is now a gag order in place. the few details coming out but all sides including that mediator saying that there is progress happening. for the 4,000 riders that rely on b.a.r.t. each weekday, progress just isn't coming fast enough. waiting for a potential strike four times in recent days. well, that takes a toll. what has this done to you? >> it has me tired. that's all i can say.
