today" for thursday october 17th. >> good morning to you. it took a last minute deal but this morning the government is open and the debt ceiling is raised. president obama signing the short-term deal into law early this morning after 16 days of stalemate on capitol hill. he says he is convinced lawmakers on both sides can work together for progress >> we can begin to lift this cloud of uncertainty and unease from our businesses and from the american people. there is a lot of work ahead of us, including our need to earn back the trust of the american people that's been lost over the last few weeks. and we can begin to do that by addressing the real issues that they care about. well, the road to resolution was not an easy one. >> without objection, the motion to reconsider is laid upon the table. >> the republican dominated house passed the measure 285-144. 87 republicans joined all democrats in support.

means is if you work for the government you have a job again. you'll come back to work and get back pay. for americans as a whole, we're on hold again because congress is still going to have to deal with this budget. take a look at the details of what was passed and signed by the president last night. the budget now is extended until january 15th. so we'll be in this boat again in just a few short weeks. it also extends borrowing power through february 7th and the treasury department maybe able to extend that just a little bit beyond. so we're not hitting that debt ceiling. furloughed employees will get their back play as soon as practicable according to the agreement and it also calls for agreement on long-term budget by mid-december. both sides of congress have to come together with some sort of permanent plan. notably missing here was any mention of major changes to health care. >> it's a different day there in washington d.c.

history was made in new jersey. new york mayor corey booker won a seat in the u.s. senate. he becomes the first african american elected to statewide office from the garden state. he'll fill the last year of the late senator's term. >> you didn't just vote but you believed that your voice and your vote matter. you believe that you don't have to re-sign yourself to what's wrong but you can do something. we can do something to make it right. >> republican steve lonigan chipped away at the lead in recent days but the democrat prevailed by 10 points. there was another point with less drama. caroline kennedy was confirmed as the next ambassador to japan. she'll be the first woman to hold that post. during confirmation hearings she spoke of her father's legacy to improve relations between the two countries after world war

ii. it's the fourth largest trading partner and home to 50,000 u.s. troops. >> there's new revelations on the u.s. secret drone program to tell you about. the washington post reporting on connections between the program and the national security agency. those documents reveal close collaboration with nsa spy resources, even suggesting some successful drone attacks could not have been ordered without information from that agency. it comes as the nsa is under intense criticism for its spy programs on u.s. citizens. officials are hoping it will bolster the agency's case. it's resources are focused on fighting terrorisms. >> also two departures at the nsa. keith alexander and his deputy are expected to leave in the coming months. officials are stepping in to help the 9-year-old that stuck on to a commercial flight to las vegas. a minneapolis judge ruled the boy will live away from his parents while the entire family receives therapy. the judge cited the recent episode and serious behavioral issues and run ins with the law.

went past tokyo days ago. this is the extended forecast. these are lines of equal pressure and the center of the lines will show you where the storms are and this can be very impressive. it could have a pressure of 940 millibars which is low. that's like a category three or two or four type storm. you can see how huge it can be. one of those big huge storms, we don't want any boats anywhere near it. probably 30 or 40 foot waves. i'll keep you posted. >> that map looks like a shirt i have. lot of lines on it. entertainment news, ed lauter died yesterday. he was known for roles in the artist and hitchcock's last film the family plot. lauter died at 74 from a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. snoop dog changed his name again. last year he changed it to snoop lion and now he would like to be known as snoopzilla. what do you think?
