round trip bus service into san francisco from the nine stations you can see on the screen. the buses will be running from 5:00 this morning until 8:00 this morning. that is where "today in the bay's" bob redell is at one of those stations hanging out with a few people trying to get to work. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. here we are already the second bus has arrived. one load of 54 people left from hayward to the san francisco transbay terminal. the direct service going on. you have a second bus waiting to have it full before they take off. on friday at the walnut creek station they did run out of tickets around 7:00, these are free here at the hayward b.a.r.t. that does not appear that's going to be the case, they will have enough tickets. quick question. you are a commuter. how much earlier you have had to get up?

>> actually not much. i'm awake at the crack of dawn so. yeah. >> what would be your message to the b.a.r.t. management or union? >> let's get it straight. get it done. that's all i want. i want it resolved. hopefully we go back to normal business hours. >> best of luck. the stations offering the limited b.a.r.t. shuttle service again, west oakland, concord, walnut creek, lafayette, dublin/pleasanton, fremont and hayward we're at now, someone else getting one of those free tickets, the service between 5:00 and 8:00. this is limited service. on a normal day b.a.r.t. can handle 400,000. these free shuttle buses all in all, 6,000 so. you do the math, some of these might run out of tickets before the 8:00 time. they don't anticipate that here but did it happen friday at walnut creek. so just information if you are thinking about planning your commute. reporting live, bob redell,

"today in the bay." >> thank you very much for that. to help keep the traffic flowing caltrans extending carpool hours, lanes again running nonstop from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. the extended hours on 80, 880 and 680, all toll bridges except the golden gate bridge will also be affected. >> there will be extra ferry service today. san francisco bay ferries first boat will leave from oakland about a half hour from now. operators say ridership has doubled the start of the strike. >> the board of directors plans to hold an emergency meeting to deal with the b.a.r.t. strike. as of now there are no new talks scheduled between the transit agency and its unions. christie smith is live at the lake merritt station in oakland with that side of the story. i know you have the picketers there. what are they telling you? >> reporter: well, you know, they are telling us that they are just waiting for word and holding the line. now and then we hear someone

drive by and honk in support of these b.a.r.t. workers who are on strike. that's about the only time we hear them get a little excited out here. it's kind of a silent strike. it's kind of understandable because they tell us that this is their second shift. some have been on the line since midnight. after the union presented a counter offer they are waiting for word. the last word from management they had not seen it yet and the workers are here holding the picket line at the lake merritt b.a.r.t. station where there are candles since the tragedy over the weekend where the two b.a.r.t. workers were killed. one of the sticking points was work rules. allowing new technology. they say that safety rules have to stay in flies protect workers from accidents. meantime for riders it's another day without trains and trying to understand this dispute. >> it seem as little excessive now and at this point you know,

going to lift dramatically. read the go in my next report now. i want to check the roads, see how those are faring. >> it is changing dramatically. we're looking to the bay bridge and the backup for the cash lanes. heading there a good volume of traffic. there are more cars through the area and more cars ending up at that bay bridge. we'll look at the maps, this flow here and flowing from time to time coming out of richmond past that richmond/san rafael split. down 101 into san francisco though we don't see a disturbance we'll track those changes as well. speaking of the city getting into the city, we have an accident that talks about a stall past geneva. no big concerns. watching the lower deck getting out of the city. b.a.r.t. service out so use one

jose with good changes. getting into the fall-like pattern as we head through thursday, friday, saturday. actually looking toward slight chances for rain every day and thursday through sunday as the jet stream starts to take a dip to the south. overall, though, we could be in the pattern all the way through next thursday. halloween so. make sure you're ready for that. we'll keep you updated. scary on the roads this morning, mike. >> there is fog throughout. setting the mood in spots. overall we're looking at heavier volume. let me show you what is unusual. we noticed here in the south bay i wanted to let folks know we're checking on the bay area. nothing unusual. not affected by the b.a.r.t. strike though more commuters ghit to south bay offices. we'll track that. there is a volume into livermore. this line along the dublin/pleasanton line not working. none of the b.a.r.t. trains are running. 680 and 24 we're not seeing a lot of slowdowns.

that might be because the sensors haven't changed. we have buses from these areas. look at this, antioch, we don't see the slamdown we often see. so we'll track it over the next ten minutes. the not we might have some folks staving off the commute. here we do see this red developing close to the maze, west 580 slow as you approach this 24 interchange. more folks heading across down into san francisco. this is a different flow and the bay bridge, let's look. oakland coming up toward bay bridge. nothing unusual. then the toll plaza we have all of the cash lanes, the fast track, use cash, that's what we're seeing. back to you. >> thank you. a preview of an exclusive investigative unit report.

a new twist on street view could help out the environment. a number of studies on plaz one scientists say they used street view to actually track and fight invasive spees es. here is what we're talking about.

b.a.r.t. a worker put a cloth. one of the sticking points all along has been worker safety in these negotiations. the unions proposal that allows for new technology to come into play but they say that it would prosect workers from unsafe conditions like the accident this weekend. b.a.r.t. hasn't seen it but in touch with the unions and a mediator. barts' board of directors holding a closed session at 3:00 p.m. to try and discuss these labor negotiations, the situation and jump starting things. still no new talks scheduled. that's the latest, reporting live, christie smith. to help people get around b.a.r.t. will offer limited service to san francisco.

looking throughout? >> reporter: it's actually looking okay right now. good morning. we're heading northbound 880, we passed the marina boulevard exit here in san leandrleandro. speed is at the limit. we're looking at more traffic in that direction right now. but as soon as we get closer to the sol see yum we suspect it will be slow. it's 5:30 in the morning. we're seeing heavy traffic isn't the worst thing we have seen but our goal is to get to the bay bridge. may see what that's like, yetting heavier than normal. given the fact that you've got potentially 400,000 people -- on the roads or through other means. so we'll find out in a bit. as far as what we're looking at

throughout bay area over to mike inouye. >> all right, bobby. let's take a look out there if we can. we'll take a look at the maps i guess. see how things are saping up as we look at the san mateo bridge for starts. also the san mateo bridge is an alternate south of what's going on here as far as the traffic. on the shoulder, anything south of that is okay. we travel across the east bay. heading to the bay bridge. they doesn't see anything unusual. looking at a smooth flow. heavier volume, one of the big issues 580 westbound and north 880 where job is, is going to get crowded over the next half hour. but we're starting to see look that the slowing for west 24 as traffic slows out of the

caldecott and you saw the sensors change. so more volume through the maze through that route and again t northbound nimitz. moving down the east shore you're doing already. not a big deal as far as the traffic. folks changing their commute could mean some heading to the south bay afs if this is an option. for the south bay we saw thim around earlier. what do you have for the forecast? >> mike, good job. we know it's a tough morning. what i can tell you that jog is not going to help especially in the south bay. we have the delouds and visibility add about a half mile in spots. if you are waiting for a bus or commuting to work, the like or walking, make sure you're ready. 46 in dublin, throughout day temperatures are going to be

chilly to start. patchy fog is the story of the morning. it has returned to the south bay so give yourself plenty of time. you're going to run into thick patches around the airport. you make your way, some thick fog out there. by about 4:00 p.m. you'll be at 68 degrees. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds. then this afternoon looking good in the east bay. temperatures will rise into mid-80s. 84 in livermore. 77 in santa teresa. 75 in redwood city and i want to talk about some showers and the chances that we have for that getting into the week and the weekend. stick around, the seven-day forecast is coming up next. back to you. jon and laura. excuse me, marla. >> federal investigators are expected to talk to the person

behind the controls. there is activity at the scene of this investigation. good morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning. well, the investigators were up on the part track. the tracks, just to give you a kmenks point, that is where the investigators were. they have since come down and looks like they came back down with a couple of bags of what would be considered evidence. they are making their way back to our location. last flight was a candlelight vigil in memory of chris sheppard and larry daniels. the two were on the tracks when an approaching train hit them.

b.a.r.t. says the train operator was an experienced driver but the union says he was a manager drining to run trains during the trike. he had not operate add train in years. it's up to the investigators to sort everything out. they will look at the camera footage from inside the train. the camera can only dem stlit was at the controls at the time of the accident. they piece together what happened and who if anybody was to plame. >> we were at the start of this investigation. they take time to investigate. >> reporter: it's going to take the ntsb from six months to one year to issue a report on the accident. the investigators will be here for about a week gathering as much evidence as they can. again they finished looks like

it's just after 5:00. we have a very slow drive. getting close to the 6:00 hour. earlier than we typically see this. the east shore, berkeley curve, the approach. it backs up on 24 approaching the bay bridge coal plaza. you will are packed up. how severe this is becoming, the last 20 minutes at the berkeley curve off 580 and west 24 slow. you exit the caldecott tunnel you slow, then all the way over to the maze 24 is down with speeds in the 40 es and crueling as you make the transition to the maze. everybody really starts to hit the roads. nothing usual. here is the try valley. the south bay is not a problem. we didn't expect it to the first

back to work and the meem count, how many americans do and do not have jobs. they are back to work. the very overdue september jobs report will be out tomorrow and the report we should have gotten for october will be next friday pushed back a week. now, as you probably recall there are two numbers. the number of jobs gained or lost and the unemployment rate. the first number is based on counting the number of paychecks, the second, the unemployment rate, though, that's a statistical guess based on phone interviews which weren't done, some of them, when the government was out of work so this can be a hazy number. jamie diamond of jpmorgan chase, an agreement to pay $13 billion to settle his bank's bad behavior during the housing boom. it would not absolve the bank of criminal charges. not in trouble for bad mortgages as for selling those
