which right now is covered in fog. monday commute usually sluggish but today expected to be nastier. >> the commute is unfolding as federal investigators arrive to find out what happened in the moments before two workers were killed on a routine maintenance run on b.a.r.t. tracks between the walnut creek and pleasant hill stations. we have a team in place on day four of this strike. damian trujillo will have information on the workersc killed and bob and mike will have update on your commute. we begin with christie smith live at the lake merritt b.a.r.t. station where b.a.r.t. workers are again walking the picket lines. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. another day on the picket lines for b.a.r.t. workers. a much different tone where friday was very loud and boisterous their first day out, today is much quieter. in fact, they are not saying

anything as they walk. what we hear is the occasional car to honk in support of these worker who is put up a black cloth in honor of the two b.a.r.t. workers killed over the weekend. they presented a counter proposal to b.a.r.t. this weekend that included movement on new technology that they would accept. you may recall work rules were a sticking point in these negotiations. but the proposal they say protects workers from unsafe conditions. b.a.r.t. since it hasn't even seen that jot it and comment. b.a.r.t. has been in contact with a mediator and the unions and the board of directors, they are holding a special closed session at 3:00 this afternoon to try and discuss labor negotiations, try and jump start them.

right now no new talks are scheduled. live in oakland,4ç christie sm, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:03 now. hundreds of thousands of people are again rerouting their morning commute. let's check in with bob redell live in the car making his way to the bay bridge. last time we checked in you were along 880. how is it looking now? >> reporter: we're approaching the maze, westbound 580 now in oakland as you are making the bend into the maze. we went on from westbound 24 to here. and if you starting probably back in clairemont, 24, where you really see the back up and we're in it now so. heading north. trark was at the limit. a lot of concession and i would in my opinion say this is unusual. you are seeing the effects of the part strike. 400,000 people usually rely on

take those trains so you have potentially a good chuck of people crowding at the roads now. as you're seeing the brake lights, try to get across the bay bridge i know you can't see this but i'm looking a good mile away from me and i see a lot of break lights not moving. i'm looking at the flat section approaching the toll plaza. once we get through-this mess here we'll probably be in traffic longer. my guess from our position we're as thing the home depot and ikea to my right on westbound 580, it leels like i don't know maybe a good 20 minutes if you are in a pool. mike inouye, you might have a better idea based on the data. >> bob, your assessment of the backup and the time pretty accurate. we're seeing the same as far as

sensors go. there is nothing like being throughout like job is. looking at the east core. this is westbound 80 down through berkeley and emeryville. just about 5:40 is when we saw this suddenly slam down from no backup to this here backing up to the bottom of the screen. the landmark is the denny's. and pow undergrossing. we'll look at the maps. we see the slow drive from the top, basically highway 4 we're seeing sam problem low. you see the volume here as far as to the top of the screen. trying to get around and to the golden gate. here we're looking at west 24 this is starting to show a slow drive out of the caldecott and off the orinda side.

berkeley and oakland, 24, 580, getting on city streets, also flooding that area so we're watching as it ripples. first we'll check concourt for southbound 680. a crash at 242, looks like it's out of the roadway but we're watching as more folks starting to hit the road. 24 will become a pair again automatic of lafayette down to oakland. here is 580 and not a big concern. the southbound side building and we have a piece of lumber in the road so another issue, there is a traffic flow as well. the try valley, a little more severe. over to the kanscastro valley y crash cleared without a problem. a slower flow across the span.

peninsula has no delays for 101 or 280. the south bay, we see the volume kicking in for 101. the only slow spot up to 880. pretty traditional. >> thank you. this morning with the strike in day four federal investigators to find out how maintenance turns deadly. two workers killed by a train. damian trujillo joins us live near the tracks with new details about the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. those investigators told me they wrapped up for the day. they came off the tracks behind me about a half hour ago, headed to analyze the evidence they gathered. people have been dropping off flowers and sandals at the kind of hovers around the b.a.r.t.

track. the investigators wearing hazmat suits. they put some of the evidence in huge plastic bags, some might be regular trash but the investigators will start through everything to make sure nothing is missed. the flowers adorn the fence. two pen were on the fence inspecting them when an approaching train hit them. they were make routine runs to keep the system working properly. now it's up to the federal investigators to sort it out. b.a.r.t. is referring all questions to the feds. they will look at camera foot it can only demonstrate who was at the krould at the time of the accident. it will analyze data as they pes

at least until about 10:00 a.m. 84 degrees later on, highs at 3:30, 4:00, and 82 degrees in gilroy today. seven-day outlook tells the story. we'll stay in the 80s through thursday, then dropping into the upper 70s friday into the weekend. over to mike inouye tracking your morning commute. >> good morning. it's really kicking in for this morning commute. we're looking to the berkeley curve. we've seen this as the back up forms for east shore freeway, that's west 80. off of 580 and 24 that's the strip in the middle. this serve, that's north 880. so all of these roadways moving toward where the metering lights turned on. another view of this traffic. this is what we're talking about about. red indicating speeds below 20 miles per hour. berkeley, emeryville, 24 out of the caldecott tunnel kicking in. not long ago bob said there are

more cars. now it's very slow and we're watching for this to continue to build and the pushback as far as slow speeds. more cars coming out of walnut creek. the area sending more cars to that. we also have folks heading over but it's not so bad at this present time. we talked about 680 down to 24. once you get flaft notice you're okay toward san ramon, this is the area for the tri-valley. a typical flow. heavier toward the castro valley but it new big deal. again it's all this area isolated by the same area where the b.a.r.t. tracks are. 92 the commute direction, some are using that to escape across away from the bay bridge. we had a couple of crashes over the morning. cleared quickly but this could be a hot spot.

the national hurricane center down in miami said that hurricane will likely veer back out into the pacific before reaching land. the hurricane is now stretched to a category 3 storm that means it will have strong winds that could cause inland flooding and significant damage to buildings there. mexican authorities say they might order evacuations for low lying areas. mexico has seen widespread damage due to weather. a month ago about 120 ended up dying in flooding and land slides due to a tropical storm. >> accused mass shooter james holmes will be in court. attorneys are set to argue whether holmes' telephone records and items seized can be used as evidence in his trial. holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of killing 12 and injuring 70 atq-n aurora movie theater. >> prosecutors in the kafs aaron hernandez they want the trial

judge to step aside. in court the prosecutor is asking the judge to recuse herself for alleged bias. they say the judge has a history of antagonism with one of the prosecutors stemming from a previous trial. attorneys for the former new england patriots star say the request has no merit and the charges are unsupported. hernandez has pleaded not guilty murder in killing of odin lloyd. >> still ahead we continue to follow the b.a.r.t. strike. we'll check in with bob redell in this car on his way to the bay bridge toll plaza.

ikea, it's a good 20 minutes, maybe more to get to the bay bridge toll plaza. you see a lot of brake lights. if you're looking at westbound 580, westbound 80 and 880 north into the maze it's heavier than normal and heavier earlier. this sus not come as a surprise. we're aware that b.a.r.t. serves 400,000. they are taking to the cars, hitting the roads. you've got these extra people on the roads. so predictions of traffic being bad wasn't hard to predict. you can see those are unfortunately coming true if you haven't gotten on the roads, i don't know what to tell you except you're going to have a long drive. you can see here we are stuck in

680, seeing that kick in and draw ma toward 24. a little break for folks through am a mo and san ramon. here no surprises but a build continues a little early past the san mateo bridge. and continuing in toward union city. we're looking at a nice flow but we're watching for the aftereffects. a nice flow of traffic but there are low clouds. >> thick fog out there. i want to make sure everybody is aware before they leave. this is a live look at san jose where you can see we've got the low clouds touching the ground. you are going to find spots across the bay area you can only see about a quarter mile so. we've got the flight delays. one-hour delay out of sfo.

making his way through the maze in oakland. you're getting the first-hand up close and personal look. how is everyone looking throughout? >> reporter: jon, last time you saw me i was westbound 80, the east shore on university avenue. i said i think in about 20 minutes we'll make it to the bay bridge toll plaza. in that a. time 20 minutes ago, we are 20 minutes later we are not even at the west grand avenue overpass. we're in the flat section approaching the toll plaza. you can see break lights as far as the eye can see and the toll plaza is probably 3/4 miles away. i'll make another prediction we're 20 minutes out. took us 20 minutes to drive about three miles down westbound 80, here we are now stuck in the traffic leading up to the toll plaza. so to get from workly to the

toll plaza probably a 40-minute drive. jts just to the toll plaza. then you have to get to sf. i'm going to make an assumption, it's going to take an hour. it's a bad commute. this is not a surprise when you have 4 hun thousand dollars people that rely on a train who no longer with that, you can imagine a huge chunk are hitting the roads and that's evidenced by the fact of what we're looking at. the front of our truck, brake lights and traffic, is some of the carpool lanes. it's slowing up. it's a bad commute this morning. if you haven't already gotten out on the roads and you do need to get to work you better come up with a plan to get on the roads fast or you're going to be late to work. reporting live in the backup

approaching, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> god grant me patience but please hurry. to keep traffic flowing, the extended hours will be on interstate 80, 880, and 680. all toll bridges except the golden gate bridge will also be affected. >> there will be exra ferry service going on today. san francisco bay ferry's first boat leaves from oakland in about a half hour from now. the ridership has curveballed since the start of the strike. a chance to get a lot of new people. >> we'll check commute with mike. first we want to check in with christina loren. some fog today. >> yeah. common dprouground for some peo. we've got a good looking day

shaping up after we get through this thick fog. this is san francisco and it's just as foggy in san jose. i want to make sure you're aware of that. make sure you're ready for the ticket pockets. as we head throughout the next couple days we're going to continue to see sunshine but mornings cold and we expect the fog to thicken up this week. down to 3/4 mile visibility in santa rosa and napa. 3 miles at the airport in san jose. no flight delays. delays out of san francisco and we'll continue to do so as we head throughout the day so. i'm with you every 15 minutes. waiting outs, all those lined up. a couple had beanies on. and temperatures are cold enough for ear muffs and the gloves.

we could drop into the 30s in gilroy before all is done. gilroy is about 45 degrees. numbers keep dropping off. they will continue to do so which is around 7:20. comfortable conditions. we heat up once the sun breaks through and that will be between 10 and 12. temperatures are going to be a little warmer than averages in places like livermore, concord, 80 right about at average up in santa rosa for today. the upper 70s return inland thursday, friday, saturday, sunday, chances for rain very slim. 10% to 20%. we'll let you know if that gets better. if the far strikes continue. we'll get to the man on the job. the b.a.r.t. strike not great but you make things more fun a.

good personality about it. >> shiny object to distract. thank you. you know the b.a.r.t. strike is going on impacting much of the bay. let's focus we have your typical commute. made atypical. here is a backup at 680. we have a crash and a car fire at 680. both adding to a bit of slowdown from capital expressway, 87, 85 and 280. there is the south bay. it's starting to build. south of the san mateo bridge. we're looking at the tri-valley over to bub lin. more focus and down to the san mateo bridge. that is moving smoothly with company over the bay. a nice flow through oakland but

more slowdowns northbound. here is west 580, jumps down in speed and 24 is slow, out of lafayette all the way to orinda, and there is the east shore freeway. first the issue for 880. it's not northbound, it's southbound at 66 here there is a crash that pulled over to the holder. while these folks are heading to hayward, the counter commute direction has the heavier flow. some are using that san mateo bridge. at the bay bridge i turned our camera over to look at -- not sure you can check it but there it is t snow around the berkeley choyv. those are both moving. all out of the maze so these three major roadways all funneling down here toward the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights are on and the
