opened up your window or your door to let the dog out, you know it's a little chillier than it was yesterday. and the cat people are going, thank goodness we don't have to let the dog out. thank you for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> we got some fog and we'll see cooler afternoon temperatures, too. the fog thickest around the north bay. visibilities down to a half mile in santa rosa. low 40s in the north bay this morning. 52 in san jose, 51 in san francisco, and the winds will be picking up as we go through the day. you see the winds southwest at 21 in fairfield, so the combination of stronger west-northwest winds later today from 15 to 25 miles per hour and much cooler air spilling in the north will start to drop the temperatures down. mostly 60s around the bay area today. where we're watching tonight is a system here that is starting off this mning in british columbia. by tomorrow morning it will be over the sierra. we're talking about some snow as

low as 5,000 feet and possibly showers here, too. we'll track that for you coming up in the full forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you very much, rob. castro valley, more than a dozen elderly people were essentially abandoned in a care facility for two days after the state shut it down. authorities have been working since yesterday to evacuate the people left behind with the skeleton staff at the valley springs manor nursing home near redwood in castro valley. a notice saying "closed for business" is on the front door of the valley springs manor nursing home and the alameda county sheriff says state social services shut down the facility thursday, but 14 elderly residents were still there more than two days later. relatives say they didn't know where their loved ones were or some of them said that they had been there with only a skeleton staff. one of those left behind is a woman whose daughter-in-law says the family just cannot understand how this happened. >> i'm actually pretty upset because we have no idea where, you know, his mom is.

the officers are trying to figure out where they relocated her to, so it's really infuriating. pretty brutal and horrific to know -- not even just her. there were over a dozen people left behind that couldn't fend for themselves. >> the social services website shows valley springs as a licensed facility, but still no details about why the state shut it down. however a review on care.com claims to be from a resident who more than two months ago wrote this place has been fined several times for several things. we have no nurses and the food is not conducive to balanced nutrition or diabetic needs. now to a "today in the bay" follow-up, and the shooting at a south bay nightclub. the bouncer still in the hospital this morning shot after a group of people in the parking lot were asked to turn their music down. the shooting happened at the spot nightclub on orchard drive in campbell about 2:00 yesterday morning. police officers spent the night last night going to nightclubs

and bars handing out flyers asking anyone with information on that shooting to come forward. police say the 33-year-old bouncer along with two other bouncers showed up in the parking lot outside the nightclub because a group was blaring music. when the bouncers asked them to lower the volume, the two groups began to push and shove each other until one of the men pulled out a gun and shot the bouncer before fleeing the scene. he is going to survive. now, nearby residents and patrons say they are used to a busy bustling downtown area which is usually trouble-free. >> generally downtown campbell is pretty safe. it's a great place to be and kind of just be around. people here are generally friendly, so i was shocked. it's kind of strange news. it's unfortunate. i hope we don't hear about it again. >> it's a little surprising. i'm a little taken aback by the whole situation, but hopefully won't happen again in this area, but you never know. people are people, can do weird things. >> police say the group, which included five to six hispanic

men in their 20s along with an asian woman, fled in two different cars which witnesses describe as a light colored newer model four-door sedan and another is described as a dark-colored late 1990s chevy camaro. new this morning is suspect in police custody after a horrific mass stabbing involving a mother and her four young children in new york city. officers say they were called to a home in brooklyn and discovered five people unconscious and unresponsive. all five victims suffered stab wounds to their upper bodies. three of the victims, a 9-year-old little girl, a 7-year-old little girl, and a 1-year-old little boy were pronounced dead at the scene. two other people were taken to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival. those victims a 37-year-old woman, and a 5-year-old boy. a barefoot haman was taken from the house. the mother of a gunman suspected of injuring six law

enforcement officers says her son has praund. samuel duran is under arrest after a shootout in roseville which ended early yesterday morning. it happened after officers and a federal agent tried to arrest him for a parole violation. his mother describes him as a habitual drug user and a gang member who has spent most of his life in prison. she says she wishes she could have talked to him during the standoff. >> probably if i would have talked to him, had his dad have contact with him, probably he would have given himself up instead of having all this been going down. why he was doing this, maybe he would have listened. he would have listened. >> police arrested duran for parole violations and likely now he will face attempted murder charges. one officer remains hospitalized in serious condition. a follow-up now into the case of a patient found dead in a stairwell at san francisco general hospital 17 days after she vanished from her hospital

room. according to the san francisco chronicle, when lynne spalding disappeared from her room, hospital staff asked the sheriff's office four times to search for her. spalding's body wasn't found for 17 days. sf general staff tells us it is uncommon to request multiple searches, and the woman's family now blames the sheriff. >> imagine the family's shock and, frankly, horror to find out that the sheriff can't even say that people in his charge did a search, and not one, not two, not three, but four searches. at this point the family an friends of lynne spalding are demanding that the leadership of the sheriff's department, the sheriff, step in front of a camera, step in front of a microphone, and answer some basic questions. >> sheriff's department says it will be at least another week before it makes any other announcements about this case. people in the bay area and throughout the country cleared out their medicine cabinets yesterday getting rid of unwanted prescription drugs. there were dozens of designated

sites locally for what is national prescription drug take back day. event organizers say their goal is to do three things, one, cut back on prescription drug abuse. two, keep drugs away from children. and, three, protect the environment. >> you don't want that medication in the environment. when you do all that, it goes everywhere and it's not meant to do that. official ways to handle that are a good idea. >> the event is held nationwide twice a year. federal officials say that back in april when they did it last time here in the bay area, they collected 18 tons of drugs. the man temporarily put in charge of the san jose police department will likely get that job permanently. we have learned that interim chief larry esquivel is expected to be recommended for the job permanently. he was given the interim post in january when the former police chief retired. he is a 28-year veteran with the department. the city manager first had to appoint the chief and then the city council will have to ratify

that appointment. no word yesterday on when that might happen. there were some tense moments in a san jose neighborhood yesterday afternoon. chp officers were making a traffic stop when they say a man jumped out of a car with what looked like a gun. they chased him and a neighbor called police saying the suspect was in her yard armed with a handgun. when police arrived, the man fled into a nearby auto shop. authorities surrounded the building with more than 20 officers. then after a two-hour standoff, police took that suspect into custody without incident. police have not yet released his identity. still ahead on "today in the bay," if you are looking for some halloween fun for the family, let nbc bay area be your guide. we'll show you where you can find all the happy haunts around the bay area, maybe some scary ones, too. and why a half moon bay pumpkin farmer was ordered to dismantle his hay bale maze. i'm scott budman, the new 49er stadium is ready for

you are watching "today in the bay." take a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. we can't see much of it this morning. the fog is low and it will last until about midmorning. we'll talk with rob about the halloween forecast because, of course, halloween is coming up very soon, and there's a tradition here half moon bay which has suffered quite a fright. a farm famous for its hay bale maze has been ordered to remove the whole thing. why the county is concerned. >> at 1,203. >> reporter: half moon bay is famous for its pumpkins, big and small. every fall its pumpkin patches draw visitors from across the bay area. but just south of town on highway 1 arata farms ha become known for a lot more than just pumpkins. for the last dozen years in

addition to pumpkins the farmer has sewn the seeds of imagination along the eight acres of coastal farmland. >> pony ride, petting zoo, we had a haunted house, the maze, we had a little train ride. >> reporter: in previous years the most famous commercial attraction was a massive labyrinth constructed of some 10,000 hay bales guarded by a minotaur. >> the walls used to be six feet tall, you couldn't see over them. that's what gave the maze its appeal. >> reporter: this year the maze is gone, so is the haunted house, and the train. the county said his farm had too many commercial attractions and not enough agricultural. it ordered him to remove the labyrinth and other attractions leaving, well, a pumpkin patch. >> i just cannot see who this place hurts. who does it hurt by having it the way we have it? it's agricultural, educational for the children. >> reporter: a san mateo

planning county official says he had no permits. he also said the labyrinth's walls were dangerous. still, visitors showing up at the farm were disappointed. >> we said we would go to the maze, so now i'm going to have to break the bad news to them. >> i was so excited because i remember i got lost in the maze for two hours, but then when we came here, it was this, and i can see over everything. so we try playing hide and seek but we could see each other. >> the county says the farmer can apply to permits in the future for the attractions. even with a small corn maze and pumpkins, he says the 50% drop in his halloween business is a bit frightful. >> why would people come from hundreds of miles away to buy our overpriced pumpkins other than they got to enjoy themselves to come out here. >> reporter: nbc bay area news. >> if you are interested in some spooky fun, you can head to our website. go to our home page and click on the halloween events guide to find out about the festivals and haunted houses in your

spring, we see these roller coaster weeks of weather. this month so far has been pretty dry, and it does look like we will see dry conditions at least to start today with some patchy low clouds and fog. 40s and 50s outside right now. that fog is schithick around th north bay. you're seeing it all the way inland out towards sfarfiefairfd san francisco. you can see the wind speed strongly on shore. later today we'll get some gusty northwest winds as some canadian air conditioning settles into the bay area. some weather headlines, lots of low clouds and fog for the morning. mid day clearing inland, and then cooling temperatures for your afternoon highs today. then turning windy tonight, especially in the hilltops, and there is a chance even though the system is dropping in mainly over land from canada, that we could see a chance of a shower or two. but the game time forecast for the raiders taking on the steelers today, just after 1:00, should see mid-60s for that game

out there with partly cloudy skies, but turning breezy and somewhat cool as we approach the early evening. right now the satellite and radar view shows you this is what happens when you get a system that drops in from the north and doesn't have a lot of moisture to work with but it will add some extra lift, get us some gusty winds out of the north, and this is going to transport that much cooler air and the chance of sierra snow showers as we head into monday morning. today partly cloudy skies around midday. as we head into the evening, notice in the coastal hilltops and the hills east of san jose, a slight chance of an isolated shower or some drizzle as that moisture continues to increase. but the sierra very likely tonight into monday morning, chain controls will be going up. dry day for your travel in the sierra today but later tonight we'll see the snow move in. 68 degrees in san jose. notice our temperatures around the tri-valley. it seems like we were pushing close to 80 at times late in the week. not anymore as you can see the highs in the 60s to near 70. as you head to san francisco, we'll see temperatures close to 60 as we go through the afternoon today and upper 50s

near the coast. so a cool finish to the weekend and it's about to get cooler. you can see there temperatures dropping as we get into monday and tuesday with isolated shower or two possible tomorrow. then tuesday and wednesday still cool but look at that thursday, kris, you will like this, ghostly clear skies. it will be fine for trick-or-treat time. the nicest weather of the week rolling in for halloween and friday. halloween is usually the gateway to our stormy weather. we're going to get one system in tonight but the rest of the week does look warmer and dry for halloween on thursday. >> and we get to fall back soon, right? >> pretty soon. they extended that back into november but we will get that xr extra hour. >> i got up this morning and i almost went back to bed. >> not quite. as powerful as the 49ers are, they won't need much power to run their new stadium. it will be run by the sun. scott budman has the latest solar success story.

days. it's raising prices, closing post offices, and even thinking about stopping that saturday delivery. so it might seem like the service we get is gone forever, and then something happens to remind us how special a letter delivered by a friendly face can be. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas has one of those story that is will make you "bay area proud." >> reporter: 130,000 pieces of mail pass through the sausalito post office each and every week. all of them, by nature of the business, destined for somewhere else. except, this is, for this stack. >> they come every day. >> reporter: a stack that means a lot to mail carrier jocelyn eustaquio. >> it's nice to know people are paying attention to us. usually we're just in the backround. but they notice, they notice when we're not there, and they've all noticed she wasn't there. >> reporter: she is jocelyn's colleague tina chew.

the woman who has delivered mail to the homes and businesses along sausalito's route 9 for the past 20 years. just not the past three weeks. on september 27th, tina was driving her children to school in san francisco when their minivan was hit from behind by an apparently speeding mercedes. tina's 16-year-old son was killed. her daughter injured, and tina has been in critical condition ever since. tom lexon has been filling in on the job of delivering the mail on route 9 and fielding the same question again and again. >> how is tina doing? >> i don't know. just doesn't look good from what i know. i'm sorry. wish i had better news. it's amazing. everything that i have talked to on this route is shocked and stunned by what's happened. >> reporter: in this age of instant messaging and electronic communicating, it's easy to think that the role of a mail carrier in our lives is smaller

than ever, but how then to explain the yellow ribbons on every single mailbox on buchanan drive and those cards, letters, and donations that tom says are left for him every single day. >> every day. >> what do i get? i get mostly junk mail, but with tina she's always got a smile on her face and, hello, barbara, how are you today? >> reporter: perhaps in the end this says more about tina than her profession. perhaps she would have touched lives doing any other job. it's just that for this one little corner of sausalito, they're having a hard time imagining someone else doing hers. garvin thomas, "today in the bay." still ahead on "today in the bay," it was a history-making homecoming at san jose state. we'll hear from the king and the queen. and women get behind the wheel in protest. why they hope driving will be

attempted murder charges. one officer remains hospitalized in serious condition. a ride operator at a carnival is behind bars this morning. police say he tampered with the safety controls of the ride and sent five people to the hospital. the accident happened thursday night on the vortex ride at the north carolina state fair. witnesses say the ride had stopped and people were getting off when it suddenly started up again. police arrested the ride's operator, 46-year-old timothy tutterrow, after their investigation. he now faces three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting serious bodily injury. >> it sounded like a bunch of stuff hitting metal. >> we have determined that this ride was tampered with after the inspection and that critical safety devices were tampered with and compromised. >> three of the people hurt will likely stay in the hospital through the weekend. saudi arabia is the only country in the world that bans

women from driving, but this weekend some women got behind the wheel in protest. as nbc's annabel roberts reports, the protest was small but many women hope it will lead to change in that country's culture. >> reporter: while some activists are claiming that around 60 women took to the roads of saudi arabia today or went behind the wheel, themp called on to run errands, not to do anything dramatic, as a sign of protest against the fact that women do not drive in saudi arabia. but, of course, it's incredibly hard to verify quite how many people took part. a number of women have uploaded clips to the internet suggesting that they have been driving today, but it's impossible to know if it actually did happen today and really where they were driving. the background to all this is that women are not given licenses in saudi arabia. those who can drive have all earned those licenses overseas. the protests of this nature first took place 23 years ago. since then there hasn't been much progress. >> we're hoping this time it's

going to work and it's going to have the authorities give us our rights to drive. >> reporter: there is, however, some change in saudi arabia helping women live equal lives. in 2015 they will be allowed to vote in municipal elections and to seek election. so there's some movement there, and, of course, the hope is for those activists in saudi arabia, that these protests today could lead to wider protests perhaps across the country and greater freedom for women. back to you. thousands of people rallied in washington, d.c., yesterday to demand more answers about the federal government's online spying program. they credit fugitive and former nsa contractor edward snowden, who is living in russia in exile, for alerting the public to the government's actions. they want an end of spying on citizens as well as spying on allies abroad. >> we are here to remind our government officials that they are public servants, not private

investigators. >> protest was held on the 12th anniversary of the patriot act. it vastly expanded the information gathering ability of u.s. government agencies. are you thinking about taking a trip for the holidays? experts say act now or be prepared to spend a lot more money to see your family. for the past two years airlines have consolidated and cut back the number of flights in many cities but this this yeyear higd for the seats have inflated prices. prices are up 9% over last thanksgiving. prices for christmas week up more than 7% to an average $330. experts say traveling early in the morning and on less popular days are the best ways to save. san jose state university made history after naming its first african-american homecoming king and queen. daniel harris lucas and daniella

you're watching "today in the bay." it was one of the craziest endings you will ever see in a baseball game, and it happened on the game's biggest stage. game three of the world series in st. louis. game tied 4-4, bottom of the ninth. cardinals had runners on second and third. ground ball to second baseman dustin pedroia who throws out the runner at home, allen craig tries to score but trips up and ends up tagged out at home. the umpire though then rules interference on that trip. craig is allowed to score, and the game ends on that bizarre sequence. the cardinals now lead the series two games to one. the sixth ranked stanford cardinal on the road against the 25th ranked oregon state

beavers. i said ducks, my bad. the game was tied for most of the day. stanford put the game away with a 32 yard tyler gaffney touchdown run. his third of the game. cardinal holds on to win 20-12, improving their record 7-1. and still ahead on "today in the bay," global soul. it's what chef josie of bravo's "top chef" is about in the kitchen and what she wants to do in her community as well. i love watching tv outside.

not everything you see on tv is exactly how it is, so how has it been since "top chef." >> i'm super busy, and that's usually how it goes for most of us that kind of enjoyed the experience of "top chef." but, you know, i have been moving around, traveling around, and kind of like bringing my project to the forefront. >> and your project is about global soul, not just the way you cook, but remembering of what people are about, how we need to be in our community. >> just to put it in three simple words, food, youth, and community. this is a food, youth, and community initiative, and, you know, i'm just trying to kind of inspire and connect people through something we all have in common, and that's food. >> well, we're not going to argue with that. sounds awesome. you're also going to be on a panel in san francisco. >> yes. >> that's awesome. >> november 9th through november 10th. 33,000 green conscious keynote speakers and community members

can see what it looks like. after you constitute it, this is what they look like. those nice vermicelli noodles. i take it and toss it up with a little rice wine vinegar which adds a nice flavor. we use a little red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, whatever you feel you like the most. i will load it up with a couple of noodles. >> i never would have thought this was something i could make at home. >> oh, yeah. >> it looks too fancy. >> it looks easy. >> well, i'm mexican, and this is a burrito basically, right? >> we'll load it up with all my favorite herbs, basil, mint, a little cilantro. add as much cilantro as you like because it makes it nice and delicious. now we have this. we can roll it up. you want to try it out or would you like me to do the first one? >> just about out of time but we can direct people to your website as well. >> chefjosie.com or visit globalproject.org and get involved and try to engage 1 million people,

[ malcrrkkhshziiiizzlllee. to this symphony of flavor: beautiful. shhhhshshshshhshshhhhhsshhhshs. gorgeous! here comes the crescendo. kkerrrrbbuuuuuucraaackkk. just...incredible. pillsbury toaster strudel. if beethoven made breakfast. and welcome back. nice start to the morning around the bay area, though one that's full of a lot of low clouds right now. kind of a gray start to the morning or depending on your point of view in oakland, a silver and black start to the morning. as we head through the afternoon, the raiders taking on the steelers today. game time 1:05. we'll see the low clouds start to break up into the early afternoon but cool temperatures today. low 60s to mid-60s around oakland, but the fog is really

the big story. in parts of the north bay, we have seen visibilities around santa rosa drop down to a quarter mile and low clouds into the east bay and south bay. right now 40s and 50s outside. for the afternoon highs will be mainly in the 60s today because we've got a sea breeze this morning, and then a cool breeze that's really going to kick in tonight. gusty winds picking up out of the northwest will lead to a drop in temperatures for the next few days, and, yes, we will see a chance of some showers possible at times, especially around the coastal hilltops as the system drops in later today on into monday and you will see your high temperatures running a lot cooler than we've seen over the last few days. the system possible, you really can't even see it on the satellite view. it's dropping in over land. so it doesn't have a whole lot of moisture to work with. what it does have going for it is cooler air, canadian air conditioning dropping down as the trough digs in. notice the wind direction with the jet stream, they will mix down towards the surface tonight which means west-northwest winds

probably 20 to 30 miles per hour in the hilltops. more moisture the east where we're talking snow in the sierras. if your travel plans include lake tahoe or truckee or reno, driving early should be fine, but by tonight we will see the snow showers start to pick up as we go through tonight into tomorrow morning. so around the bay area this morning, we have all the low clouds, should break out to partly cloudy skies moving into the afternoon. and then a chance of seeing some drizzle or some light showers in the hilltops tonight into tomorrow and very cool air sweeping in from the north, so our highs inland will only be in the low to mid-60s tomorrow, and look at the sierra tonight into tomorrow. we're looking at snow levels close to 5,000 feet tonight, and if we do see this much snow, notice the location, blue can n canyon, twin bridges, you will see some chain controls going up in the sierra for tomorrow morning. around the bay area today, pretty nice day but a cooler finish to the weekend. highs in the 60s around san jose, only the warmest places inland, perhaps out around the tri-valley, should see highs in

the low 70s. otherwise we'll be in the 60s in the north bay. a bit warmer north of san ta rosa. 60s into the north bay valleys and 50s to 60 in san francisco. so a cool, blustery start to the workweek as we look for a chance of some isolated showers. can't rule it out. the system, again, does not look like much, but it's not enough lift we could see a shower or two. things begin to dry out on wednesday, and good timing for the trick-or-treat forecast. we're looking clear and dry. maybe some patchy fog but looking pretty good as we head towards thursday evening. >> all right. thank you very much, rob. rumors are swirling that google's next project is being built right on the bay. take a look at the floating barge made of cargo containers. experts say it could be a floating data center. right now it's just floating off of treasure island. the website looked into public records and claims google is behind the construction. back in 2009, gaggle wag granted

a patent for a floating data center. sea water could be used to cool servers which would save electricity and saving cost. google not confirming any rum s rumors. finally michael jackson fans gathered in cities around the world yesterday to take part in a simultaneous international dance to his hit "thriller." ♪ >> the thrill the world website says the event was created in 2006 and helps raise money for local charities wherever those dances are held. one participant said thrill the world shouldn't be seen only as a dance event. as much as a social service that promotes donations to charitable causes. zombies in fancy dress and face paint took to the streets in several dozen cities. 18 different people participated as well. >> those are nice outfits. >> let's do it. thanks for joining us this morning. no 5:00 and 6:00 because it is sunday night football night in
