i got my jd and mpa. i kept acting while in grad school and i joined a company in boston. i come down here to new york and do a lot of theater. over time took over. >> did you take the bar exam? >> no. you only take the bar -- i got my degree but you only take the bar if you're going to practice law. >> well how did your parents feel about all that -- >> no, no, no. they had always reinforced to me -- >> they weren't mad privately mad. they always told me that there was nothing i couldn't do. >> okay. >> nothing i couldn't achieve. whatever is in your heart go for it. >> that's great. >> i followed their advice much to their trepidation. >> did it take you a while to get traction in the acting world? >> you know what, i was really fortunate, spike lee gave me my first break, put me in a movie called "get on the bus" with ozzy davis and charles dutton. >> wow. >> ozzy is amazing, right? >> that started me off. i credit spike lee. he put me in another movie called "he got game" and helped my career at the beginning.

>> now you've been on lots of great shows and you always seem to be some sort of a law officer or some sort of thing. this is a -- >> solving crime. >> solving crime. but this time you get to travel the world. >> yes. >> that's cool. >> you know, wherever the story line goes in "covert affairs" you pick up and go. >> that's what makes "covert affairs" so special. having done "csi" for nine years in a lab the whole time it's nice to be on a show where we go everywhere. the first season we go to colombia, frankfurt, copenhagen, final two episodes are set in hong kong, amazing episodes. three episodes left of the season and couldn't be more excited. >> it seemed like it would be so pricey of course everyone is trying to cut costs but that's not the case when you travel overseas. >> when we go overseas, that's what's amazing, they've been doing it a while, i just joined the show this year, but they have it down to a science and they take a pretty skeleton crew.

>> one a week. >> one a week. what? no. no, no. >> yeah. >> thank you. >> what are you making today. >> the whole idea here is i want people to understand, this isn't a diet book, but having said that, this is the way i like to eat. very light, healthy foods. >> okay. >> but it doesn't mean you have to skip dessert which happens to be one of my favorites. >> okay. >> okay. we're going to start with my chocolate fig bites. i have about a pound of dried figs that i've quartered and put in here. >> okay. >> do you want to add a little bit of water and almond butter. >> okay. >> and mix it altogether and end up with this paste. the whole idea here is dairy-free. >> i know you're dairy-free right now. >> she's dairy-free for life. >> by the way, a lot of people are. people are vegan and they're gluten-free and i wanted to give -- >> we love everybody. >> yes we do. >> i do too. there's a lot of different dietary needs out there these days and you can make fun, really good dishes for -- >> can i ask, those -- oh, lord. those figs are dried? >> they're dried figs.

>> have you had a dried fig? >> try it. she looks at it like it's -- they look weird but they're super sweet. >> i like figs. >> super sweet. >> with the al month butter, mix this altogether. something you can make very easily. it all combines together into this paste like that. okay. then i take a little ice cream scoop so i can make all the balls the same size. >> hoda. >> that's not what it's supposed to be. looks like something else. >> you asked me to help and i did. >> that may be your dog. >> careful. >> oh, blake. >> having said that, you make these little balls like meatballs and they're kind of sticky. melt some chocolate. this is dark chocolate. you can use vegan chips. little bit of dairy, maybe a trace, not much. i drop them in the chocolate like that. >> look what's happening? >> look at that, hoda. >> i like it already. >> i put them here and i like to top them with a little bit of salt. >> okay. >> because i think the salt

bring out the chocolate. plus it makes them look so pretty. >> sea salt. >> you can do sea salt. i do these flakes because they look prettier. i put them in the fridge about 30 minutes. i think these are great on a holiday table. so surprising how good they are. >> salty sweet. >> like a bon bon, but a healthy bon bon. no dairy, no gluten. vegan. they're all those things. i think they're fabulous. >> really great. >> you could do that with dates if you want to. >> okay. >> then i have fruit spring rolls, rice paper and then fruit, almonds and rice noodle. >> what's the dip stuff? >> just honey and mint. and then here we have a peach and blueberry crumble which is gluten-free. >> okay. >> maple syrup, no sugar. >> what's the drink? >> spinach. i'm going to give you this one. i didn't drink out of that one. spinach, apple ginger and a little extra treat for you. can you taste it? >> uh-huh. >> there's a little gin which works really well with a green drink looking for a pick me up. >> it's delicious.

did you ever think about zip lining across a crocodile infested lake? >> every day. >> eating a scorpion or taking a polar plunge in freezing water? >> just yesterday. neither did lu ann caan until she found herself feeling in a rut and looking for a change. she decided to do something about it. boy did she. >> she sure did. he shares her experiences in a book called "i dare me, how i rebooted and recharged my life by doing something new every day." >> every day. >> hi. >> great to have you here. >> so nice to be here. >> i think a lot of women can relate to where you found yourself. you had a big career going, children, you were -- >> loving husband. >> but you felt -- >> i hit a wall and i think at some point, we all do for one reason or another. i did because my job was

changing, the economy was tanking, friends were losing jobs, and on top of that, there was all this new technology coming at me and social media and i did not want to adapt or adopt any of it. >> your daughter kind of ignited this change. >> gave you a kick in the you know what. >> she happens to be here. >> anyway, what did she do that changed things for you? >> she came home from l.a., she was living in l.a. and she came home and said, what the heck is wrong with you? >> right. >> i know you, mom, and this is not you. >> yeah. >> she said you've got to do something. i'm like, what am i going to do? she said, you know, you need some kind of creative outlet. why don't you blog. at that time i'm like, what's a blog? >> yeah, right. >> she said, just write about something. and she really pestered me about it. finally i said, all right. what if i do something new once a week. she said oh, that's a fabulous idea if you do it every day. >> for a solid year. >> for a year. >> we mentioned some of the things you did which are crazy, the zip lining, the scorpion, the plunge. tell us about some of the things

you enjoyed. >> well the polar bear plunge was really big and symbolic. oh, this is zip lining. that was the first time i ever zip lined. >> were you terrified, by the way is it? >> i was but at this point of the year i was used to jumping in and going. >> you had survived a lot at that point? >> right. that's the thing, when you start doing things like this. >> did you ever regret any of the things you did? >> i regretted my eat dessert all day day. >> oh. >> i thought that was going to be fabulous. >> and -- >> unfortunate bathing suit he just had on. >> i don't know that guy. >> not anymore, you don't. >> honey, you took the plunge with him, if you know what i'm saying. >> he pulled me out of the water. i thank you. >> what was the takeaway from this kind of thing? for you? >> i realized you really do have to dare yourself. you have to push yourself out of your normal box. and -- >> your comfort zone. >> yes. when you're stuck you start saying no to a lot of things and go inside. >> yeah.
