morning in this day after with the dust settled. republicans are crowing about the big chris christie landslide in new jersey as he becomes the front-runner for the 2016 presidential race. the tea party is feeling no less embolden. today, finger pointing. tea party activists what might have been in virginia and democrats in a panic about how health care almost cost them that race. the big winners are no surprise this morning. >> i sought a second term to finish the job. now watch me do it. >> the real drama there wasn't about whether christie would win, but whether he would drop any hints about 2016. >> i know that if we can do this in trenton, new jersey, maybe the folks in washington, d.c., should tune in their tvs right now. >> christie wanted to prove he is a different republican. did he that. winning voters only some republicans dream up.

51% of hispanics, 21% of african-americans and 32% of registered democrats. new jerseyians are not quite ready to send him to the white house if the opponent is hillary clinton. they would prefer clinton over their governor. but election night's most compelling drama was the nail biter virginia governor's race. democrat terry mcauliffe getting a win over ken cutenlli. he credited the controversy over health care with making it a much tight erase. >> this race came down to the wire because of obama care. >> virginia exit polls show voters were sour on health care with 53% saying they oppose the law. but mcauliffe got a boost from the other polarizing october issue. 48% of voters blamed republicans for the government shutdown. back to christie, matt, he gets to go on the national stage immediately. not only is he now serving a

second term in new jersey, new york city media market, but he's going to take over the republican governor's association. what does that mean? he actually has an excuse to essentially travel to every state in the country in 2014. >> chuck, let's stay on that race. it's another win for him in a heavily democratic state. the margins are worth noting. the demographics also worth noting. what jumps out at you? >> well, i go back to the hispanic demographic more than anything else. 51%. when you think about what is the republican party's biggest problem right now in winning national elections? it is the fact that hispanics have been moving so decidedly against republicans. now, does this mean that christie is going to get somewhere between 35% and 40%? if he's on the national ticket in 2016 and he can just get 35% to 36, 37% of the hispanic vote, he's going to be president of the united states. >> let's talk about he has been very critical of the republican strategy of shutting down the

government last month. he called it a monumental failure. so what does his victory yesterday in new jersey, what message does it send to the right-wing of his party in particular the tea party? >> well, that's go >> reporter: that's going to be interesting to see how they respond to it. you know, it was interesting in the new jersey exit poll. here chris christie winning in a landslide. but the five ability rating of the republican -- favorability rating of the republican party was totally under water in the state of new jersey. 57% having an unfavorable view of the party. less than 40% having a favorable view. will the tea party accept this? i don't think so. i think they're looking down to virginia. they sit there and say, guess what, we stuck to our guns, we tried to make health care the be all, end all issue. those establishment republicans walked away from us. in fact, cuccinelli people last night were telling me they spent weeks begging chris christie to come to virginia and campaign with cuccinelli. christie said no.

>> chuck, thank you very much. a deadly bombing attack in china that is being called the most sophisticated in years. we have more from beijing. eunice, good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. people were heading to work during the morning rush hour when around 7:40 a.m., a series of explosions went off in the northeastern city. the authorities said the blast erupted in front of the province party headquarters. witnesses say that building windows were shattered, passing-by cars were damaged, and a nearby minivan exploded. so far one person is dead, eight people injured. police say that small devices were planted in flowerbeds outside of the building. they appear to be homemade. they were packed with metal ball bearings as well as other devices. so because of that, they -- a lot of people believe that they were packed for maximum damage. people are very worried about that. a very unusual thing to see here in china. savannah? >> all right. thank you for the breaking story out of beijing.

thank you very much. there has been an emotional scene in an italian courtroom this morning where amanda knox and rafael salecito are being retried for murder. while knox is not there, her name has come up a lot. keith miller is in florence. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. well, dna experts testified this morning they could find no dna evidence from the victim on the alleged knife wound, the murder weapon allegedly. it turns the prosecution's case on its head. inside the courtroom, rafael solecito, knox' former boyfriend, defended himself. "i'm trying to show who i really am," he said. "they describe me as an assassin. i am not like this." he described amanda knox as his first real love. near tears, he concluded his statement say, "look at the truth, and give me my life ba .

back." highway and knox have maintained their innocence since being arrested six years ago. italian tv reportered he visited the grave of the victim in march despite the family's opposition. the latest dna results confirm that the knife entered into evidence is not the murder weapon. this were traces of knox' dna on the handle of the kitchen knife, found at salecito's apartment, but the defendant says she used it to cut bread, not commit murder. six year ago, knox's roommate, meredith kercher, exchange student from england, was sexually assaulted and brutally murdered. knox and salecito upon convi-- convicted and spent four years in prison before evidence was overturned. >> there's very little evidence if any that can show that the two defendants were at the scene of the crime. >> reporter: knox appeared on

italian tv to defend herself saying, "i'm not a criminal who murders people. that's a fantasy." some are convinced the man already convicted of the crime did not act alone. the prosecution will deliver its final arguments at the end of this month. we're expecting a verdict in this case, matt, by the beginning of next year. >> nbc's keith miller in italy this story. thank you very much. >> natalie's here with the story that can only be described as a doozy out of canada. >> yes. it certainly is shaking up canada's political world. toronto's mayor finally coming clean over serious drug use allegations. rob ford admitted on tuesday that he smoked crack about a year ago. nbc's stephanie gosk has the details. >> reporter: there were more than a few people in the room who thought this would be a resignation. >> i sincerely, sincerely

"hey, wassup, you half n-word. you're still a rookie. i'll kill you." >> reporter: there's an allegation that you left voice mails, "i'm jonathan martin," voicemail. had do you have to say? >> no comment right now. >> reporter: seen getting into a bmw, he was also seen on tuesday receiving a brand new ferrari. the nfl is investigating allegations incognito would single out rookies and young players and bully them. on his instagram, six months ago, incognito posted this picture. there are two things richie incognito doesn't like -- taxes and rookies. [ bleep ] >> reporter: video taped recently by tmz sports raging at a ft. lauderdale pool hall called dirty blondes, incognito has been embroiled in controversy for much of his career. back in 2004, playing for the university of nebraska, he was convicted of misdemeanor assault

>> reporter: for ryan ferguson's father, it's the day he has long been hoping for. >> i just felt vindicated for ryan that he always said he was innocent. >> reporter: in a strongly worded ruling, an appeals court threw out his 2005 conviction of not worthy of either judicial and public confidence. ryan ferguson talked to "dateline" which has covered his story for several years. >> it's like your soul has been taken from you almost. you just deal with so much that you feel almost empty inside. >> reporter: he was sentenced to 40 years in prison. ferguson and childhood friend chuck erickson, both 17 at the time, had spent the night drinking heavily in a college bar. later, erickson said he had repressed memory that he and ferguson committed a crime. ferguson denied it. erickson testified against him

as part of a plea deal. >> i have to go to prison for the rest of my life. >>reporter: the appeals court said none of the physical evidence from the scene, dna, fingerprints, shoe prints was a match. and attorneys argued erickson's videotaped confession to police seemed less than certain. >> i could just be sitting here fabricating all this up. like i don't know. >> reporter: last year erickson took it all back. >> i lied and said i remembered things i remember. >> reporter: so did the only eyewitness saying he felt intimidated by investigators to identify ferguson. >> i would like to have forgiveness from ryan and his family. >> reporter: now ferguson's future rests with prosecutors were. the court gave them 15 days to seek a new trial or set him free

unconditionally. for "today", john yang, nbc news, chicago. >> his parents bill and leslie are with us today. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> i understand you were able to speak to ryan after this ruling came down. can you describe his reaction? >> well, he was somber but very, very happy. he realizes there's another chapter to go. but he was elated and expressed that and expressed his happiness to the great support he has received. >> leslie, do you feel he's almost too cautious to be openly overjoyed at this point? >> definitely cautious, yes. but i think the last nine years have taught us to be cautious. >> this has been a long road. and the court's ruling is really strike. under the facts and circumstances of this case, we conclude that ferguson did not receive a fair trial. his verdict is not worthy of confidence. after this long battle, bill,

what did it feel like to read those words? >> well, we feel totally vindicate vindicated. everything that ryan said has come to be true. he is an innocent man and should be freed immediately. >> it's the prosecutor's call now to refile the charges and subject your son to another trial. do you have any idea what the prosecutor plans to do, bill at. it seems dubious considering there are no witnesses now. they've all admitted they committed perjury, and there's no -- nothing. this case has no merit. >> i can't imagine the victim who has it relive all of this. what do you feel about what they're going through now? >> we feel like the prosecutor has misdirected the family all the way through this. they've said they had evidence that they didn't. and they totally misled them. and now we're in the process of

the site. it is based here and has just boomed with some 80 million users now. on askfm, teenagers ask one another any question, post any answer, and wide open twist on social networking that is unbelievably popular. >> it's fun. you know, the questions that people have for me. >> weirdly addictive. you want to see what everyone thinks about you and is saying about you. even though, you know, you don't really know who is saying the stuff. >> that mysterious anonymity, the question or comment out of the blue is the appeal. and the dark side. >> tell me what you think of this person? or they're like you're fat, you're annoying. you're stupid. >> or how about drink bleach. go die. a california girl went on askfm to tell her story after she was kidnapped and family members murdered. then lawrence in britain was

bullied on it. >> someone had a blow by blow account what to do, how to do it and suggesting that you take alcohol and drugs. >> everyone can be a lot meaner online in general. but anonymously, it makes it a lot worse. >> reporter: this 14-year-old was so disturbed by the bullying on there she wrote an online article about it. >> a lot of people say you shouldn't let it get to you. but i think that's kind of hard. it's easier said than done. >> reporter: there have now been at least ten teen suicides linked in part to comments on askfm. this irish girl blamed the site in her suicide note. so we found it here, small office in the capital of latvia after three years considered to be one of the 200 most viewed web sites in the world. two brothers who started it wouldn't talk to us. it's not even well known in latvia. but since this controversy, the site did make real changes in august. you can report bullying, easily

block anonymous posters. they're hiring moderateors, making incentives to register and statements telling us askfm is committed to doing everything it can to protect its users and stamp out bullying or any other kind of abuse. there are plenty of people would agree you can't just blame a website. we know cyber bullying is everywhere. one british survey actually said it was worse on other social media sites. one teenager said when you feel bad about yourself, you want to know what other people think about you and you put it out there to "try to stick yourself." when the responses are beyond terrible, you take it even more to heart. you know what? a lot of parents don't know that this is out there. back to you guys. >> michelle kaczynski in latvia on this story. >> takes the pain of teenhood and amplifies it. >> as parents, this is something you have to worry about now constantly. >> you know what scares me? by the time we all hear of it, they're probably on to the next

sunday. she fell near mile 20. she refused medical treatment and finished the race. monday with a bandage on her head, she visited us here on the plaza. >> you fell yesterday, but you are okay? >> oh, yeah. >> you look beautiful. thank you for coming down. >> reporter: joy told her sister she did not feel well. she went back to the hotel for a nap and never woke up. >> she did. >> reporter: joy was the oldest woman to complete the new york marathon. a title since 2011. the 86-year-old grew up on a dairy farm. she did not take up running until the age of 59 when a friend suggested they center the 1988 new york marathon. she became a familiar face at marathons across the country. profiled by the "wall street journal." >> my husband, if he was living,

about? kids are writing notes again. it's not all web sites. remember that? >> super cute. >> all right. >> those are the stories that trending today. now we want to turn to our special series "choosing adoption" and a very, very personal story from our own chief medical editor dr. nancy snyderman. good morning you to. >> good morning you to, matt. 27 years ago i surprised myself when i decided to go ahead and adopt a baby girl. my daughter kate always wanted to meet her birth mother and one day she invited me along for what turned out to be a most extraordinary journey. i was a young surgeon in little rock with no desire to be a parent. i had a career in front of me. and the blinders were on. and one saturday night i got a phone call from a young doctor saying would you adopt this baby? and my answer was, yes. >> that phone call 27 years ago changed my life. suddenly, i was a mother to a 7 pound baby girl i named kate. >> i can't ever remember not knowing i was adopted. >> kate may know that she wanted

to meet her mom. >> two years ago she placed a short message on a website devoted to finding unknown relatives. it was a long shot. >> a couple months after i posted the listing, i got an e-mail. it said i think i'm your sister. your mother loves you and she would love to meet you some day. >> reporter: the next thing i knew, we were on a flight to little rock. kate's quest to meet her biological mother. kate's stomach was in knots and just as nervous was a woman waiting in a nearby city park, her birth mother, cheryl. >> it couldn't be more precious to me. i mean it's like giving birth to her all over again. >> reporter: and finally, a reunion many years in the making. a mother and daughter meet for the second time. >> oh, god. i can't believe this.

>> you're a lot bigger than you were 27 years ago. this is beautiful. >> reporter: it was time for kate to get the answers to questions she had been asking her entire life. >> i've always wondered if you were proud of me and -- >> i've always been proud of you. being a single teenage mom, i couldn't give you a life that you would amount to anything. and i know you amount to a lot of stuff right now. >> i've had a wonderful life. and there isn't a day that goes by that i don't thank you for everything you have given me. so if you would like, i would be honored to introduce you to my mom. >> i would love to. >> reporter: and with that sh it was my turn. >> thank you. i mean it.

get her that day. and that was the biggest heartbreak. >> i didn't know that you didn't know. >> together we looked through pictures of kate as a child. >> she looks like a flower child. >> and then i reminded cheryl of a letter she wrote months after the adoption. it is one of my most sacred possessions. and then you said, i won't try to keep in touch with you unless you give your consent and if you don't, it's okay. and i didn't keep in touch because i think i felt this need to sort of start kate. but i want you to know this letter has always linked us and accept for you and kate, no one's ever seen this letter before. do you remember writing this letter? >> i do. >> reporter: memories of a time

skit? >> that has shaken up politics. he says he's going to stay on. remember marion barry years ago in washington, d.c. he admitted he used crack and following an investigation then he was out for a while. then he was able to win back his seat once again. >> yeah. >> you know, it's fascinating. kit happen in the world of politics. >> he claims it was a one time thing and mistake and going to keep on and running the city of toronto. >> sincerely hope gets a new tie. >> this piece in "the wall street journal" grabbed your attention and mine. >> i think is a fascinating subject. i think for a lot of kids and, you know, parents who have kids that play sports nowadays. you know it has become extremely competitive out there. and a lot of parents screaming on the sidelines at their kids as well. so very -- it can be very contentious on the field. so jeff pearlman is a notable writer for "the wall street

journal." he has written a lot about sports and he has written in "sports illustrated." >> he's a sports reporter. and he likes sports. so this is not a knock on sports. this is a guy that knows what he speaks. he wrote in part i know i know teen sports build character and teach them thou win and lose. team sports are about camaraderie and togetherness. but he says he's not going to let his kids play team sports. he wants them to play individual sports. >> yeah. he says he prefers his kids to run track. he would prefer they learn how to sort of get that level of confidence on their own. >> right. >> this, of course, i mean comes on, you know, all of this alleged unsportsman like conduct, even bullying that we've been seeing and reading in the headlines the last couple days with the dolphins player. >> if you read the piece, what he's getting at is something you touched on with your kids, too. which is that team sports is not like even when you and i were playing which is like you play little league in the spring, basketball in the winter.

they want you to commit to a sport as though you have a college scholarship and play year round. >> some places, starting at the level my son is competing now in soccer, they make you sign contracts. if you're playing for a club team, you have to agree that your child is only going to play with that club team and not play with any other teams like youth leagues or town leagues because they want to make sure that you're fully committed. that begs the question, i mean they're not able to play other sports. so they're not able to grow in other areas and know, you know, how well they would do in those other sports. but also, i mean i think he makes the point, you know, i think with him it is sort about knocking kids' confidence down as well. >> yeah. >> i think a lot of the times on the field you do see coaches yelling and you see parents yelling. and, you know, the kids' confidence does suffer. i've seen that with my own son sometimes. you're like even though you can't help but get emotional during a game, waunt to steer them in the right direction. but as a parent, you know, you can't help but josh, you just have to get that. get the goal!

>> of course. you're competitive, too. and that's what he pegs whole story to. his older brother when he was young sat the bench the whole time until he was put in the fourth quarter because they had to play everybody. and he said that really hurt his brother's confidence. we saw what team sports did to his brother. he doesn't want that to happen to his kids. with that said, i don't think he threw out the baby with the bath water. team sports is great for a lot of people. >> he says, yes, medals are nice and trophies. but what is so important about the best. why are we so focused on the result while focusing on the journey. why do we turn or off spring into us? >> yeah. >> which is kind of the question that i think a lot of parents should ask them shelves. >> the larger point is what you said. this becomes a career for a 7 or 8-year-old kid. let's be honest, parents, your kid's probably not going to play in the nhl or nba. let them have fun and compete. don't turn night a job. >> i think there is such tremendous value in playing a team sport though, even if
