a very good friday morning to you. 4:30. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning. we're following breaking news in the philippines. the strongest typhoon ever recorded has made landfall on the island nation causing catastrophic damage there. wind gusts up to 170 miles per hour. this sun believable typhoon. haiyan has killed at least four people, completely knocking out power and cutting off communications in the country's central region. it's also set off major land slides. this is a major problem for so many people. about a million people currently now in shelter areas in more than 20 provinces. >> you can see from the video people trying to get away. communication is lacking as well. >> electricity cut off. >> exactly. it's hard to see a powerful storm p move through that area. i want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. she's tracking the typhoon.

what can you tell us? >> well, right now it's still creating really devastating impacts. let me show you the storm system. give you an idea of how massive it is. look at the size of that storm. strongest to ever make landfall and one of the strongest storms recorded on the planet so this is a dangerous system. it was packing winds, you talk about a category 5 hurricane, 155 miles per hour where that starts. this had 195 mile per hour sustained gusts, to 230 miles per hour. this is a powerful system. though it's weakening millions have been impacted and i'll strong at category 3. it's going to take at least a couple days to a i says damage. they have to wait until it's safe enough to get out there and find out the devastation, all of the impacted structures and the people out there. our thoughts and prayers going out to them. i wanted to show you where the system is headed. by saturday bat 10:00 p.m. our time it will make its way to

vietnam and then through china, as we head throughout sunday so. we are not even close to being finished with the system. and it's one that we're going to be watching for the next few days. our local weather is good. we'll look at that. i want to check your drive. good morning to mike inouye. >> good morning. as you said, thoughts and prayers there, we have a lot of our local community i don't know how many have family there so our thoughts are with you. we'll continue to update that situation. here at the bay bridge we do have the fog, that's an issue, a fog advisory for the bay bridge. traffic is moving. we have a nice ride but i'll show you that broader view. i wanted to show you why there is the fog advisory. back to you. >> that shot makes it understandable. thank you, mike. 4:33. students in berkeley will wear skirts to school in support after teen set on fire while sleeping on a bus. luke sasha is still in the hospital in stable condition. earlier this week police say a

16-year-old boy lit his skirt on fire aboard a transit bus. his mother told the oakland tribune he identifies as gender neutral. the subject has been charged with a hate crime. court papers say thomas did it because he was, quote, homophobic. the family members said it was just a terrible joke. >> ridiculous. disgraced politician george shirakawa heading to court for sentencing as part after plea deal he pleaded guilty several felonies from his abuse of public funds. shirakawa blamed the bad behavior on depression and his gambling addiction. he is facing up to one year in jail. shirakawa's legal troubles not over yet. he's being charged with false impersonation for allegedly helping to send out campaign flyers back in 2010 that contained false information. shirakawa's lawyers have argued the charge should be included in the plea deal bought judge has

denied that claim. >> it's 4:34. police asking for help to find a 77-year-old man suffering from dementia and diabetes. they say edward moore does take medication for both and he's never walked away unattended. he was last seen near his home on sequoia road wearing a green shirt. he has camouflage shorts and sandals. it's possible the man may have gone into east oakland where he used to live. >> a lot of talk around a possible run for the white house. hillary clinton will be delivering a speech. about 22,000 people expected to show up at the mass kony center to see clinton speak. tomorrow night she will be with her daughter chelsea at san francisco's regency ball room to raise money for the clinton foundation. both events are closed to the public. >> right now people are sleeping in the freezing cold waiting for

to somebody who can find use out of it. we're getting into cold months. san jose, that's where we're starting to see visibility drop off. the golden gate bridge socked in with fog. temperatures not that cold though, still in the 40s and 50s headed toward the 60s and 70s today. so we'll see more sunshine and a warm-up as we head throughout the afternoon. in your inland cities a cool day in pacifica and where we get fog over daly city. i'm going to show you the weekend numbers, we made to the friday and we're going to continue to update you on super typhoon haiyan throughout the morning. strongest storm to ever make landfall. that's a big one. let's check on your drive. >> we're talking about the fog. i can see a little bit of the golden gate bridge at the bottom of the screen. and you lose it in the fog. that's reason for the advisory as you drive across the bridges. but as we look at others there is no problem as far as the north bay. this is san mateo, foster city

camera, not too far away but you see the visibility is tough through the city to the bridge itself. on the span your distance is all right but we're watching the low clouds in oakland drifting through the area and visibility may be a factor in many spots especially over the oakland hills. and along the coast. here 880 to the south bay, moves smoothly and clearly here. that visibility is changing around so we'll track it. so far no major incidents for the south bay. >> thank you very much. >> it was a monumental game and monster victory and stanford fans feeling good. the team coming out winners in one of the biggest college games. >> touchdown stanford. >> oh, yeah, it was nice. you know traffic heading out it was a mess. but stanford fans, they didn't care. they were in a celebrating mood. the cardinals upsetting oregon for the second time costing the

shooting. emotional out there. the freedom of information commission ruled back in september the recordings from inside the schoo during the shooting should be provided to the associated press. the a.p. wants the recordings to examine police response to that massacre. >> more officers will be on patrol in san francisco. reminding people to stay alert. the chief says extra officers both in uniform and plain clothes will be on public transportation and in high traffic areas like union square. they hope it will prevent thefts especially cell phones which account for two thirds of robberies. a $1 million grant is paying for the changes and a new eyes up phones down initiative reminding muni riders to be aware. >> twitter getting ready for day two of trading. you know the san francisco company grand opening is going to be a tough act to follow. twitter far exceeding expectations with a market close

the worst day in ten weeks. invest terse reacted to a surprise interest rate cut and also a report on u.s. gdp. twitter bucking the trend soaring 73% in its market debut. did close below its opening of about $45 a share. the big focus is that october jobs report. out before the opening bell. the number expected to be distorted by the impact of the government shutdown. forecast calling for 120,000 jobs added to the economy, and the unemployment rate to rise to 7.4%. we saw the dow drop 153, 15,594. the nasdaq losing 75 to 3857. meantime t the white house budget office saying that furloughing federal workers last month cost the u.s. government 6 6.6 million work days.

the omb says the shutdown led to $500 million in lost tourism spending at u.s. national parks. back to you. >> have a great weekend. >> 4:47. never a shutdown when it comes to weather. always something happening. this week we had cool temps heading toward showers. >> some showers on the radar. that's what we're tracking. we get the weekend. i don't want to deny you of your weekend. temperatures are chilly, not as cool as it has been. we have the blanket of low clouds returning to the bay area. i wanted to show you the golden gate bridge n. is the first morning this week we have visibilities this low. you can see for a quarter mile over the bridge. san francisco is still mostly clear. we expect the marine layer to push in. san jose also not as visible as it was this time yesterday. and i can tell you the blanket

of low clouds is going to be with us the first part of the day. i wanted to take you into your lunchtime hour. show you what we're expecting. where you see this green we're getting a strong marine influence throughout day so. 66 degrees at lunch time in fremont. not too bad but oakland at 58 degrees there. 67 in concord. out in the east bay not a lot of that fog and as a result, 75 degrees for livermore, 77 in fairfield and 74 degrees down in gilroy. here's where we're headed. temperatures stay steady. we're looking pretty dry for the weekend unless you live in the north day and i'm mostly focused in on sonoma county. you might get showers but the best chance of rain for the greater bay area arrives tuesday into wednesday. and right now it looks like we'll see showers tuesday with a better chance late tuesday into wednesday. then thursday things clear out, our temperatures come up but we need the rain, we're getting into that time of year our rainy
