we begin in the phippines where it is going fromad to woe. this morning nearly 2,000 people just days aft that devastating typhoon, ts morni neay 1,200 people are confirmed dead. officials warn tt number could climb to more than 10,000. and it's now a race against time to help survivors. the "uss george washington" is on its way. on board, dozens of american ilors and more than 80 aircraft. nbc's ian william joins us from mala. goodorning, ian. >> reporter: good morning. the presidential pale this rning have been at pains to emphasize they a doing all they can to sedily get help to those affected areas. a presidentialpokesperson sang that aid waseing spatched and that communations are being restored. he said that noby would be forgotten, that aid would reach even the most far-rehing areas. now, thi comes in the face o growing criticismrom some of those areas that they're simply not getting any aid, despetely need water, food and shelter not getting through

now, aid flights are getting in. and the problem seems to be one of logistics. coinuing issues with blocked roadand, of course, with communicions. and rescue workers having problems still getting to some ofhe more outlying areas. no the u.s.as deployed "the uss george washington" which pected to arrive offshore within the next y or two as well as other aircft. there have bn offers of help from more than 20 countries worldwide. and, of course, many, manyngos also sayg that they, too, will bring in this desperately needed aid. what wasn't helping today has been rain in the affected areas. big storm thankfully just to the south, but not helping those thousands of people afcted, bey. >> that can be problematic. thank you, ian. ase've been reporting,he storm was perhaps the most powerful ever rerded on earth. measing some 370 les wide with winds peaking well over 200 miles per hour.

c's tom costello shows us just wh that feels like with a look inside the storm >> reporter: the ser typhoon so devastating because it reached peak wind strength right before hitng land. by comparison, hurricanes katrina and wilma in 2005 had peak winds of 175 miles per hour. thes are 40-mile-per-hour winds now. athe wind tunnel researchers strapped me in to experience wind force winds. 74-mile-pehour winds now, this would be category one storm. from 7to 96. these winds virtually impossible. then to 115 miles per hour, fraction of the 195 winds in the philpines. painful experience while scientists can't say whetheclimate change contribud to this particular
