>> it is 4:30. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are following several breaking news stories, right now b.a.r.t. is shut down because of an overnight computer problem. >> it has been a rough one. christie smith is live at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. we hear hundreds of people stuck on trains for several hours. >> reporter: good morning. we're hearing maybe up to 1,000 people just sitting there, they had so much time they were tweeting out photos. we'll get to that. i wanted to show you here at the walnut creek station, and normally this would open about 4:00, 4:30.

this is right now. we haven't heard trains roll by so this is a rough start to your friday morning commute. all because of a system wide computer glitch that has passengers telling us it took two-plus hours to get to their destinations overnight. at one point 19 b.a.r.t. trains, 1,000 passengers affected. 500-1000. we have video of the dublin/pleasanton station that was open but appeared they were waiting for passengers to unload. we didn't see much activity though one train was on the tracks. the trains would normally completing by midnight. why the computer problems? that's not clear but apparently it's not communicating with the tracks. so, operators had to get out and manually crank these interlocking units on them to move them. at 3:00 this morning we're told it was down to about six trains affected at mcarthur, bay point,

millbrae station. people saying look, they had time to tweet out photos saying they were trying to pass the time. some waiting for the trains to move. some had a chance to get a nap in. they were sleeping. back live i wanted to show you what it looks like, we got a couple of people waiting for the gates to open. one gentleman said he gets here and walks in. he thought maybe they would have them wait on the platform but that's not the case. we heard the agent walking around saying 5:00 a.m. at the earliest. he said that's iffy at best. that's what we're hearing, 5:00 a.m. maybe for the trains to get rolling. for now no b.a.r.t. service. live in walnut creek, "today in the bay." >> could be a long morning. other breaking news, this time in napa county, where a wind whipped fire is burning out of control right now. it is happening neared soa canyon road. right now mandatory evacuations

for people in lower vista, shady oaks and ridge drive, the fire broke out about 11:00 last night and firefighters say the flames spread quickly because of 30-mile-an-hour winds in the area. so far 300 acres have burned. it is 25% contained right now and no word on injuries or if any homes have been destroyed. the exact cause is under investigation. fire officials say they responded to initial reports of downed power lines. >> we can tell you all of the powerful winds blamed for a pair of deaths this morning. both happening in oakland. the first one on skyline boulevard near brandy rock way. investigators say a tree fell right on a car. the driver died at the scene. the second one happening at a home on the corner of east 22nd and austin streets. there a 30-foot tree limb and power line came down on a man sitting on his motorcycle in a driveway. officials at this point have not said if he was electrocuted.

down the road on 53rd avenue and international boulevard, wind making it very difficult for firefighters battling a two-alarm fire at a boarded up supermarket. that fire is under control at this hour. the wind knocked out power to thousands of people. here are the latest numbers. the east bay has taken the brunt of it, right now there are 25,000 people without power. that's down from more than 42,000 overnight. in the north bay, 8500 still in the dark. 105 on the peninsula. in the south bay, 15 people do not have power this morning. there are no issues in san francisco right now. >> with that in mind let's bring in meteorologist christina loren. a lot of people seeing these winds all night long. how long are they expected to last? >> maybe a few more hours. we're seeing the numbers start to drop off. it's crazy how windy it is in san francisco and through the oakland hills versus san jose where we have no wind happening at this hour. you can see from the san

francisco camera, 58 degrees. our camera is shaking from time to time because the wind is pretty fierce. 64 degrees at 4:00 p.m. we'll see a warmer day and the winds will continue to drop off throughout this afternoon. we want to look at your current wind speeds. fairfield is pretty gusty, getting wind speeds at about 24 miles per hour, gusting 35, 40 miles per hour. really down in the south bay not seeing much activity. your wind speeds in san francisco are starting to drop off. you can see they have fallen to about 16 miles per hour from 21 over the past couple hours. throughout day and the all important weekend we have changes. remember, though, your seven-day forecast right here at the bottom of our screen throughout all of my weather reports. 4:35. let's check your drive. >> good morning. a couple of issues that make this friday drive interesting. the bay bridge toll plaza we see a smooth light drive and the roadway is dry compared to yesterday but the santa ana wind what helped dry things out.

the winds pretty high in parts of the bay area especially the east bay, north bay hills, all of the bridges should be a warning, so that will be one issue. this area approaching oakland over to san francisco is also over the b.a.r.t. tracks which has no b.a.r.t. trains running. no b.a.r.t. service. that's when there was a strike. that caused the westbound 24 and the east shore freeway west 80 through berkeley. expect the hot point as far as traffic flow as more hit the roadway. as an alternate, checking in to see what the latest update is. right now the rest of the bay moving slightly but we'll track it. watch the bridges and the wind over the water. >> we'll continue to keep a close eye on the chaos the wind is causing. visit nbcbayarea.com for the latest up-to-the-minute information including weather alerts in your neighborhood. today community leaders and

lawmakers plan to announce new legislation to legislate replica guns. the senators hope it will prevent shootings like when andy lopez of santa rosa was shot and killed by sheriff deputies. the deputy said he thought lopez's replica gun was a real ak-47. today senator norina will outline new legislation requiring all bb guns and replicas in bright or translucent colors. >> joseph nasowill be sentenced. 79-year-old nasowas convicted of killing four separate women, the murders happened back in the 1970s and 199s in northern california. he acted as his own attorney during the long trial a. jury recommended a death sentence for nasobut a marin county superior court judge will have the final say at this morning's

sentencing. >> new details from san jose state university where three white students now suspended will face hate crime charges accused of bullying their african-american roommate for months. prosecutors say logan and colin and joseph called their roommate, they hung a confederate flag in the dorm. the prosecutors say it's not the worst of it. >> the most offensive things that they did to this young man was they, on one occasion, locked his head in a u-shaped bicycle lock. >> hundreds of students upset over the allegations marched on campus. prosecutors say the victim never spoke out because he wanted to, quote, get along. the three white students told the "mercury news" they are not racist, just playing pranks. >> today marking 50 years ago

the president john f. kennedy was assassinated. the country at that point coming to a virtual stop when it happened a half century ago. today the country will do the same. we have a live picture, a look at arlington national cemetery where the president is being buried or has been buried. in dallas where the president was shot and killed in 1963, a day of events to commemorate the anniversary now being held, thousands gathering in daly plaza for a tolling of bells and moment of silence at 10:30 our time, the same time the president was killed. >> this is the first really very serious of course adult incident in my life, and it's been there ever since. >> part of american history, both terrible but something to come see. >> a memorial mass being held where museums, libraries and schools across the country all remembering in their own way a

president who was killed at the very young age of 46. closer to home here, john f. kennedy university will hold a memorial program, this gets under way in the university's main lobby on ellenwood way, starting this morning at 10:00. we'll be airing the moment of silence live right here this morning. the coverage will start at 10:25. >> it's 4:40 now. i want to look at our own forecast now. how are the temperatures? >> they are looking good, the wind is pretty fierce. i want to put that warning out to drivers of high-profile vehicles, tractor-trailers, trailers, suvs. the wind will knock you around. mostly around the bay and through the higher elevations. san francisco 58 degrees, this is the one and only camera shaking violently because of the winds. otherwise we're starting to drop off especially in the south bay. we're at 7 miles per hour sustained dropping to 4 miles per hour the past couple hours.

everything seems to be dropping off in san francisco. napa where the fire is burning we're still talking about pretty strong sustain wind speeds. the news of the day in the weather department the santa ana wind going to die down. you'll notice on the key the hot colors, the warmer colors where you get fiercest wind. through about 10:30 we're going to see a lot of winds decrease especially livermore and santa rosa. done with the oranges and pink. that will take place throughout the day, calm winds continue to build in the bay area. that's the good news. we have a calmer situation headed our way. we made it to the weekend. i'll have that forecast coming up. let's check your drive and say good morning to mike inouye. >> hearing there is a calmer situation ahead. the san mateo bridge over the last few minutes i saw this camera shake. that's facing the bridge. wind advisory for the bridges. san mateo, dumbarton, and look

new contract but it's not one the unions expected. what union leaders are saying about the possibility of another strike.

an important heads up for parents. a popular baby monitor is being recalled after two babies sadly die of strangulation. angel care monitors incorporated recalling 600,000 of its movement and sound monitors. the consumer product safety commission says the sensor pads and cord could wrap around the neck if pulled into the crib. the monitors sold to 2013. the company is offering to repair the kits. >> unions are consulting with lawyers after b.a.r.t.'s board approve add tentative labor contract. at a meeting yesterday b.a.r.t.'s board members approved 8-1 to approve the contract but they took out a disputed family medical leave provision. b.a.r.t. says the provision was accidentally included in the proposed contract because of a clerical error. the unions say the board cannot

pick and choose which part of the tentative contract they like. the union talking with lawyers and asked if another strike could be in the future a negotiator said no comment. >> call this the battle of the retail giants. walmart making a move to try to match the other giant amazon during this holiday season. it's going to be a grudge match. for that and the rest of the news before the bell let's turn things over to seema mody. good morning. >> good morning. futures higher after stocks rallied on thursday on the back of better than expected data on unemployment. the doy closing above 16,000. no economic data out today but comments from two top fed officials and we get earnings from retailers like foot locker and pet smart. the dow rising 109, the nasdaq adding 8.

business school grads face the most uncertain futures of degree holders with the hiring markets for mba expected to contract 25%, a drop in listing for finance jobs and 86% in hiring by the government. the report says employers typically hire fewer mba's substituting with bachelors degrees who can be paid less. lastly, walmart trying to keep wake-up the joneses, cutting free shipping minimum at walmart.com from $50 to $35 for the holidays. meaning if you buy $35 of stuff, you get free shipping. that matches amazon's minimum. it raised its free shipping for the first time 18 decade from $25 to $35. >> thank you. that free shipping always makes it easier to shop. >> sure does.

>> makes a difference. got to save where you can. want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. the winds dying down. >> a little bit. they get to you spend more to reach that limit. i'm so guilty of that. 58 degrees in san francisco. taking a live look, camera shaking. and you can see here we've got a lot of wind right around the inner bay and at the coast. that also goes for the higher elevations. look at san jose, camera holding steady, temperatures are 56 degrees, at 60 by lunch time, 4:0064 degrees. and temperatures comfortable across the bay area throughout the day. so we're looking good for that. we're talking about pretty strong wind, basically slice the bay area in half diagonally. we have the fiercest wind north of the golden gate bridge and the bay bridge. we're looking pretty good. san jose about 4 miles per hour so really the microclimates making a big impact where we're going to see the wind. throughout day today, area of low pressure starts to move out. high pressure moves in.

means there is still some wind. it's been a rough one with some of the rain and heavy winds. christina loren will be along to talk about that. mike will look at the traffic. it's 4:55. a congressman and former nfl football player teaming up at an east bay high school. they are there talking to students about the serious topic of concussions. representative george miller and retired new england patriots defensive back honor jackson will be there speaking to students at north gate high school. the session will focus around concussion prevention and treatment. it's a story with the nfl on down to high school. the awareness event starting at 9:00 and will highlight the school's prevention efforts and new guidelines for head injury treatment. >> speaking of concussions, warriors star seth curry will be a game time decision against the lakers. curry is with the team in l.a. but was cleared for non-contact drills yesterday.

he suffered a concussion on monday night when marvin williams, he fell on his head. curry sat out wednesday night's game against the grizzlies. >> doctors are very conscious of this. it's really making sure the players are at the point they are not taking chances. smart to be safe. >> exactly. want to check the commute. b.a.r.t. is not running, the winds are high. >> definitely. you can make it out this is the roadway, high rise by the coliseum and the b.a.r.t. station. two issues here. this roadway going to get more crowded as folks avoid the b.a.r.t. there is no service, no passenger service for any of the b.a.r.t. trains because after systemwide problem. christie smith continues to give us updates from one of the stations and we hear nothing yet about bus, bridges or options. so high winds through the east bay, oakland, watch that as you head over highway 13 and 580.
