tv Today in the Bay NBC November 22, 2013 6:00am-7:01am PST
6:00 am
when will the trains start rolling and what triggered the trouble? we'll find out in a live report next. >> and more breaking news from wine country as high winds continue fueling a massive wild fire. we have new detail this is morning about evacuation orders in effect. >> and that fierce wind will continue to be a factor for this morning. you can see our san francisco camera shaking quite a bit. highs are going to end up in the 60s for today. you need your coat but we've got a great looking weekend. i'll have the forecast in a few moments. >> the santa ana wind an issue for drivers, there are more drivers because of the b.a.r.t. problem weeflt have updates how it affects your drive this friday. >> a live look at the eternal flame at arlington national cemetery as we remember 50 years since the assassination of president john f. kennedy. it's friday, november 22nd, this is "today in the bay."
6:01 am
a good friday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning everybody. let's start with that breaking news affecting hundreds of thousands of b.a.r.t. riders. at this point no train service now because of a computer glitch. modern times. christie smith is live at the walnut creek station. at this point any word on when the service will be restarted? >> reporter: we do have word and it's not very good. the word is that we just don't know. we heard 5:00, we heard 6:00 and still no service. i want to show what you folks are doing here. this woman here, alice, a lot of people on the phones this morning. either making phone calls or texting trying to find a ride to get to work. a lot of these riders running out of patience and leaving. i want to show you video of the parking garage where b.a.r.t. riders who waited 30 minutes, maybe an hour are getting back in their cars and driving out,
6:02 am
carpooling, jumping in cabs, calling people to pick them up. no b.a.r.t. service this morning because of a computer problem that started after midnight and that's normally when service is supposed to be wrapping up for the night. at one point about 19 trains with 500-plus riders had to sit and wait on the trains, some saying they waited about 2 1/2 hours while train operators had to get out and crank these track switches and get them moving again. riders saying look, they can't believe it's 6:00 a.m. and they still got no service. >> the guy says looking real bad like it never crashed like this. so find an alternate route some how. >> cab, bus. >> most likely. i'm waiting for the next. >> so here we are. gates are closed. no options. >> reporter: she tried to call her boss to see if her boss could pick her up. i wanted to show you the parking
6:03 am
lot at the walnut creek station. normally you see people showing up, parking cars, but it looks like a lot of people got the word there is no service. we did earlier see one train roll by. i saw one go by a minute ago. it's not carrying passengers so maybe working on the system. at this point no estimated time on where we might have service running. reporting live in walnut creek, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. i think it's safe to say b.a.r.t. has had a rough couple of months, also dealing with fallout from its signed contracts with employee unions. more about that dispute and the new concerns it could affect riders. this is coming up in about 10 minutes. first let's check in with mike inouye with a look at how the system outage is affecting the traffic. >> this friday is not what you expect. we say friday light. that's not the case. the bay bridge, we had an early backup for all of these cash lanes and cash usually indicates folks who are infrequent
6:04 am
commuters. folks traveling over across the bay bridge and the cars, look at the lanes closest to the camera, big advantage, no backup there and fast track, you still have no problems. it's the cash payers. look at the maps. off westbound 580 and highway 24. that's the first to show the backup and the build of the maze. the east shore freeway and 880 out of oakland moving pretty fluidly. these routds have marked with the arrows here. 24 and the east shore going to see more traffic. we're starting to see the volume build and we showed you the toll plaza with the backups. again it's different than your typical friday. expect more traffic across the san mateo bridge and some head south and then back up in san francisco. back to you. >> we have more breaking news. this time in napa county where firefighters are gaining ground on the wind whipped veg station fire. it's about 50% contained so. far 300 acres burned.
6:05 am
it's happening not far from silverado trail. right now mandatory evacuations for people on loma vista, shady observation and ridge drive. the fire started last night. the flames spread quickly. no word on injuries or if homes have been destroyed. the cause is under investigation. >> time to check the weather. the high winds have been blowing throughout the bay area. this is a live look at the bay bridge. you can see our camera bouncing around. all because of those gusty winds. >> the winds turning dangerous, even deadly. toppling trees, slowing down traffic and causing massive power outages. this morning we have a team in place covering all of this weather. we'll check in with christina but let's get going with marla tellez. showing us some of the damage with a tree that busted up in the street. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. i want to say we got here in
6:06 am
this berkeley neighborhood about 4:30 this morning. at that point the winds were howling out here. right now, though, it's fairly quiet. very calm conditions. so that's better news but if you want to see the power of the wind come out to oregon street between addleine and telegraph. this tree now chopped up. we have some of its branches across the street, a pile here. you can't see off camera. the base of the tree and i'm going to show you that the 3 trunk. i'm 5'1". this i would say is about 7 feet tall so a big tree but the worst of the damage it clipped the front end of this dodge truck. i haven't seen people come out of their homes yet. this could have been much worse. the worst of the winds in oakland two deaths were
6:07 am
reported. this is one death on skyline boulevard, police say one man was killed when a tree fell on his car. another man was electrocuted on or near his motorcycle when a fallen branch brought down an active power line onto him. >> reporter: apparently the guy was either getting on or off his motorcycle and tree branch fell over and killed him. when i got here he had -- everything was knocked off. >> reporter: at the height of it 39,000 people in the east bay and 19,000 in the north bay were in the dark. that was as of 11:00 last night. this is according to pg&e. i got an update. she tells us it's much better twags now 13,000 in the east bay and 6800 in the north bay are powerless so. crews have some time.
6:08 am
but crews respond to separate outage incidents. i can tell you a slice of good news is that the power is on here. live in berkeley, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. it's rough going out there. >> exactly. luckily i think the winds are letting up. >> they are. good morning to you. calm conditions in berkeley. you'll notice from our cameras across the bay area microclimates, differentens. windy conditions out in san francisco this morning, here is san jose we're cheer, camera's not shaking. 65 degrees in the heat of the day. >> you will notice, we're still in the double digits.
6:09 am
17 miles per hour right now in napa and 19 in san francisco. as you can see calmer conditions south of the golden gate bridge. we'll see the winds die down as we head throughout the next few hours. that's weather story of the day. i want to show you what we're expecting on future cast. you're going to start to see calm conditions across the bay area especially in the north bay where it's been blusteryll night. that's a better submission that's -- you have reached the weekend, you can catch your seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. every portion of the bay area, we've got your back, we've got you covered. back to you, jon and laura. >> today, the somber remembrance of a day that would abbreaking point in our history. the assassination of president john f. kennedy. the entire nation will pause in
6:10 am
remembrance. the hardest in dallas where president kennedy was shot and killed. leanne gregg is live with a look at how the city will pause and reflect. fw morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. i'm at daly plaza not far from where the president was shot in 1963. it's also the site of where the program will take place later this morning, you can see last minute preparations not long ago. the poster of john f. kennedy was unveiled, they are wiping off the seats because it's a rainy day here with temperature drops of more than 40 degrees from yesterday. the mayor says it doesn't matter, nothing will get in the way of this program. the joint public rift endeavor. there will abmilitary fly over. a moment of silence and tolling of bells at 12:30 central time. the exact time the president was shot all of those years ago.
6:11 am
thousands of people are expected to join in this commemoration to honor the president's legacy. back to you. >> thanks, leanne. i was saying how ironic it is it was raining on that morning and there was a cover on that far. but the sun came came out and decided to take it off. >> so many strange circumstances. we'll have more on nbcbayarea.com, there is a special page on our website to president kennedy's legacy, to see this search jfk 50 on our home page. >> 6:11. still ahead, are we in store for part three of the b.a.r.t. strike? the decisions the board is making about a contract out into unions and what it means for commuters moving forward.
6:14 am
let's get you updated on today's stories. firefighters gaining ground on a wind whipped fire in napa county. it's about 50% contained. evacuation orders still in place for people neared soa canyon road and loma vista drive. so far 300 acres have burned. >> b.a.r.t. service shut down because of a computer problem. riders expecting to catch a train were greeted by locked gates and hundreds were stuck on trains overnight. b.a.r.t. is not sure when it will have the trains up and running. >> this a day after b.a.r.t.'s board approves a tentative labor contract without a controversial provision inside. b.a.r.t. taking out the family medical leave provision. the unions are talking with
6:15 am
lawyers and when asked if another strike could be in the future a union negotiator said no comment. >> senate democrats did something thursday so epic the nickname was the nuclear option. >> scott points out good news for one person. >> one person, janet yellen. the tracks last night, jon, made a major change to the way that body deals with presidential nominations to federal positions. the change means janet yellen is now a shoo-in. at least two republican senators had hinted they might filibuster to stop her confirmation to head the federal reserve. last night's rule change means yellen will no doubt be confirmed. obviously the change in senate rules has nothing to do with actual nuclear weapons about but they gave it that nickname because it's such an extreme change to the way the senate does business. some call it the biggest change since thomas jefferson was president.
6:16 am
it means president obama's future pick for federal appointments will slide through. republicans have no chance of stopping them. but that's good for the democrats only so long as they hold the white house and the senate. if and when the republicans hold those positions it's as easy for republicans to do the same. the only nomination exempt from this rule by the way are supreme court appointments. today the dow industrials will open above 16,000 for the first time. remarkable even more so when you consider it was a month ago we did the same thing with 15,000. nothing magic happened. it is just a number and considering it only tracks 30 companies it's not even the most important. but still it's a big number. finally you may recall the faa said it would be okay to use electronic devices from gate to gate. they did not say it was okay to talk on your cell phone because that's the job of the fcc. the fcc this morning says maybe, just maybe, it will allow phone
6:17 am
calls in flight. did it say if it says yes it's going to allow the airlines to decide whether they are going to allow it. i will fly your airline if you don't allow it. >> exactly. >> boo on that. nothing like hearing people talking on their phones next to me in a restaurant let alone on a flight for a couple hours. >> let's switch gears, talk about the forecast. it's a busy week. >> i know what you're talking about, jon. it has been a busy week. good morning to you. right now skies are mostly clear. we have low clouds but not much to talk about. you can see our camera shaking because it's pretty windy. i want to show you the south bay, starting to get a little sunlight. the sun doesn't come up for a half hour or so. but you can see a break in between that thick deck of clouds. that's good news for us. wind will continue to play a factor for the first part of the
6:18 am
day. low pressure moves out, high pressure moves in. this is going to leave us with a comfortable weekend. what that means for us is i want to give you the idea of what we expect in redwood city. 62 degrees for friday, by saturday 67 up to 68 on sunday, then monday sitting about 70 ges so. looking pretty good. you made it to the weekend and you know what, you can meet your favorite anchors. temperatures are going to be comfortable. fremont, san jose, morgan hill come out to our safe way. there are a lot of people you may not be aware of that are hungry this time of year. if you want to head to fremont you find mike inouye, stephanie and i'll be out in san jose with marla tellez and scott mcgrew. 68 degrees at the river mart plaza. love to meet you out there. and our own laura garcia-cannon,

6:20 am
the b.a.r.t. station through the caldecott and jam up here. the east zor, you can't take those lines. on the peninsula side, stops by the stations. they are going to stop in millbrae to try to pick up some of part folks that should help. you travel through the area, oakland as well. mor stars hitting the roadway. but the wind advisory for them. we show you the slower drive starting to build and the alta mont pass. nothing unexpected for 680 into the south bay. 4 most found routes. the winds are much calmer as well. >> 6:20. coming up an today, giving

6:26 am
need. >> how far does the $10 bag of food go? >> i would think it would go at least for two weeks. >> really. that long. >> because we give a lot. >> thank you very much. appreciate it. guys, thank you very much, the piedmont highlanders. they are big supporters of the food drive. i'm going to be at the livermore safeway near 580 tomorrow. you're going to be out and about. it's a $10 bag. super easy. it's not going to break the bank. laura, jon. >> it makes a big difference. they can make the money go so much further. we're also at stores throughout the area to encourage people to donate to the second harvest food bank. >> marla tellez, scott on rivermark plaza going from 11 till 1 tomorrow. >> and bob mentioned that he's going to be there, mike inouye, christie smith, all at stores from morgan hill to antioch.

6:31 am
way to get to work. a rough start to the friday morning. no b.a.r.t. service and no time when it might open. we heard 5, 6, now we hear we're going to have to wait. a lot of commuters hopeful they might get the green light. one agent said the glitch doesn't even show trains on the system yet. it started around midnight leaving hundreds stuck for a time. they are home now but i heard from b.a.r.t. and they tell me no bus bridge this is morning so they are urging people to use alternate forms of transportation. a hot of people got the message no b.a.r.t. service, the parking lots are empty so really rough start to the day. reporting live in walnut creek, christie smith, "today in the bay." today is a day of reflection as we honor the memory of president john f. kennedy 50 years after his assassination in dallas, texas.
