i'm kris sanchez. right now on "today in the bay," wildfire in wine country. fire crews spent the night on the front lines defending a dozen homes. the conditions making for a very dangerous situation. and an afternoon at the park that's anything but a typical saturday. what police are say being a young man found shot in san jose. plus, if you don't go outside today, you might be in good shape. it is a chilly start to this sunday morning. we'll show you when yu need your mittens and when you'll need your um brael -- umbrella. this is "today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning. looking live at a beautiful start to the day.

we'll show it to you so you don't have to go outside because it's a cold start to this sunday morning. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. is it going to stay chilly? >> the sun will be coming up and that will help us out. right now we're around the 30s and 40s in the bay area and you have patchy fog in san francisco also approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. you will run into some of that fog this morning. as we go through the next hour or two, we'll still see temperatures like this close to freezing around santa rosa, napa, fairfield, living room, even sunnyvale 39 chilly degrees right now. as we go hour by hour for temperatures, recovering nice l by lunchtime. we should see numbers climbing from the south bay to the peninsula over to san francisco with patchy low clouds. out around the east bay in oakland, we should see mostly sunny skies. hazy conditions at times as we go through the afternoon. today looks fine, but we're tracking some changes in our weather forecast that's going to take us out of this dry pattern

and as we approach thanksgiving, looks like our next weather system starts to come on in. we'll talk more about these midweek and thanksgiving forecast changes coming up in the full weather forecast in a few minutes. kris? we are following a developing story for you this morning. that wildfire that continues to burn out of kro he will of cont country. it's burning in sonoma area near the geysers area. nearly 800 firefighters are battling that wildfire and as of this morning at least 3,500 acres are burped and the fire is just 25% contained. firefighters are working against some very difficult conditions. >> we have a real opportunity to make significant progress on getting aggressive with containing the fire with the reduced kind of sporadicness that the wind creates, but, you know, we're talking about fuels and terrain that are very dry and very steep, and we can't

discount the fact that the potential for growth is still there. >> the fire captain says the gusty winds that whipped much of the region in recent days also are hindering firefighter progress. no injuries though have been reported. crews say another wildfire burning in the wine country for the past two days is now 100% contained but not before burning 190 acres north of napa. one outbuilding is destroyed, but no homes. the cause of that fire is under investigation. this is a historic agreement between rhawn airan and five ot countries. it's been more than 30 years since any talks between the u.s. and iran. iran says it will limit its nuclear activities in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanktctions. president obama made a rare saturday night address to the nation describing the break through as an initial six-month agreement. >> while today's announcement is just a first step, it achieves a

great deal. today of that diplomacy opened up a new path toward a world that is more secure. >> not everyone is behind this deal. israel's prime minister is loudly criticizing the agreement saying the international community is giving too much up to iran. this morning iran's foreign minister welcomed the agreement reached on the islamic republic's controversial nuclear program. he said it is important that they see the opportunity to end an unnecessary crisis and open new horizons. >> we need to work together based on the same principles on which we started, principles of equal footing, mutual respect, and common benefit so that we can put an end to this unnecessary and rather sad chapter. >> if the interim deal holds with iran, the u.s. and it's partners will negotiate final stage agreements to ensure iran does not build nuclear weapons. back here in the bay area this morning, san jose police

are working to identify a man found dead at a local park, and they're also working to find his killer. the calls to 911 about this incident started around 4:30 yesterday afternoon with people reporting a man who was shot at a park, capitol park in east san jose. when officers arrived, the man was dead of his injuries. the victim has not been identified, but police tell us he is between 18 and 20 years of age. this is the 44th homicide in san jose so far this year. this time last year there were 42. >> he had at least one gunshot wound and a quick examination of him found out he was deceased. we just basically did what we always do, cordoned it off and called the homicide unit. they come out, they're investigating it right now. >> police say it is too soon in this investigation to say whether this shooting is gang related, though investigators spent several hours at the scene last night. they are looking for other witnesses. if you know anything about the shooti

shooting, you are asked to call the san jose police. you can also bring in tips anonymously. in san francisco a three-alarm fire put people out on the streets. the fire started between two buildings near the intersection of sacramento and locust streets around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. those buildings are a mix of businesses and residences. people who were at home at the time were able to make it out safely. however, fire crews say both buildings suffered significant damage. >> as always with san francisco with the wood frame constructed buildings and zero property lines, the buildings right up to one another, when a fire starts in between two buildings, it gets into both buildings and would fram wood frame, the fire moves quickly between the two buildings. >> crews put out that fire in two hours. the cause is still under investigation. this morning fire investigators say a floor heater may have sparked this fire on the peninsula. several apartments and store fronts burned in burlingame and when officers got on scene, they immediately called for more help raising that fire to four

alarms. the fire marshal says this serves as a reminder of the danger of leaving flammable objects near heaters, especially as the holiday season approaches and there are christmas trees and presents to consider that sometimes get too close to the heat source. fortunately though, no one was injured in this fire. firefighters and police spent much of the day yesterday at a san francisco construction site where scaffolding and a part of a building collapsed about 9:00 in the morning. take a look. it happened on geary street near jones. the collapse loknocked down a light post and damaged several parked vehicles in the area. however, it did not injure the construction crews. people living nearby say it sounded like a minor earthquake. >> and it was kind of like all the kings horses and all the kings men, it all came tumbling down. and then the fire department came and were on the scene pretty quick. >> it is unclear what caused that structural collapse. the building inspectors and the public works department has been on the scene trying to figure out the reason.

you are watching "today in the bay." good morning to you. looks all peaceful in the distance and we have the trees swaying, but we know we had some wind in the forecast last week and now oakland has a new tourist attraction of sorts thanks to mother nature. that giant tree we showed you yesterday is still down, and now it's drawing crowds that just want to take a picture with it. the eucalyptus blocking a walking path at lake mirror is 30 feet in diameter. the wind knocked it down on thursday. some people did have some mixed reaction to the tree. >> fun for the kids but for kind of a landmark in oakland, it's kind of sad in a way. that's a beautiful tree, but, i

mean, it's fun for everybody now, but it's sad, too. i have mixed emotions. >> no word on when crews might be able to move it but it's got to be a you can'tidaunting thin. it's amazing nobody was injured because people are walking around there all the time. >> we had strong winds over the last couple days. it helped to bring in some drier air for the north now that the winds have subsided and we're still seeing clear skies. really chilly start to the morning. you see the low 40s around the south bay, peninsula, and east bay. san francisco, patchy fog. 30s in the north bay and 48 degrees, that's the warm temperature so far this morning, and there you see some of the low clouds you're seeing around san francisco. so 32 right now in santa rosa. 33 in napa. take a look at some of the temperatures around the tri-valley. you can see 38 in livermore. 35 in gilroy. santa mayo and s mateo and sunn

30s. hazy sunshine and a few watches of low clouds out on the coast. for now at least there's no rain. the satellite view looks fairly calm. we have high clouds off to the west, and eventually those clouds will be spilling our way as it sets us up for the next chance of seeing rain in the forecast. it looks like it will try to arrive towards the middle part of the week. right now high pressure holding its ground. weather system continues to move out of southern california so as you head towards the middle part of the week, we'll see a system out of the gulf of alaska approaching the west coast. it will put high clouds our way by tuesday into wednesday, and the timing of the rain right now looks to be holding off for the most part until thanksgiving day. f by wednesday evening the travel forecast still looks okay with the showers offshore and during the day thursday we'll see some showers here mainly in the south bay and in the south coast as that area of low pressure tracks more towards southern california as we approach friday. so our temperatures around the bay area today despite the

chilly start, pretty nice recovery as we head towards the afternoon. we should see low 60s around napa and novato. oakland, 64. big game coming up. we have the titans in town taking on the raiders. we have low 60s around 1:00. mid to upper 60s perhaps around some of the east bay hills, but closer to oakland, 64 degrees and temperatures cooling as we head towards 3:00 into the evening. around the tri-valley today, we should see temperatures in the mid-60s despite the cool start. we'll see dublin at 64 degrees. 65 in pleasanton and a few other stops around the bay area will see temperatures climbing into the low 60s with patches of low clouds around san francisco. peninsula temperatures with hazy sunshine in the mid-60s and closer to san jose 65 degrees and mid-60s further south. very likely it will be the areas south of san jose seeing some of the warmest temperatures around the bay area, and you will notice in the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, tomorrow may be just a little bit warmer and then temperatures cooling as more clouds start to

fill in as we approach that weather system for wednesday and thursday. so you can see the microclimates around the south bay, willow glen in the low 60s. silicon bay, mid-60s as we head towards the afternoon. so for the coast today, we are looking at clear skies for now but the low clouds will continue to fill in. for the sierra, chilly temperatures, less wind. next chance of rain and snow coming in on thursday, but it looks like right now it may be the southern sierra, down towards yosemite that has the best chance of showers approaching thursday. >> thank you very much, rob. now for a story i think it's safe to promise will just make you feel good. it is about a santa cruz mom who captured the sweet bond between child and puppy. there are plenty of brilliant minds on the stanford campus, but none quite like this. it is a young man who the cardinal football team calls their secret weapon. "today in the bay's" stephanie trong has the story. >> reporter: it's the way a camera can capture every moment in time perfectly. humans who come closest have photographic memory. some say it's what makes chess masters and card players so good. but imagine if you had that kind of mind on the field. stanford football does, number 61. >> find a role. find the way to make yourself valuable to the team. >> reporter: but conner is not the usual star player. >> so when i first got here, i was a soaking wet 230 pounds. >> reporter: you won't find him on the field. >> my first role was andrew luck's water boy.

>> reporter: though he stands on the sidelines, mcfadden is far from second string. he's what his team considers a secret weapon. why? just ask the head coach. >> he has a ridiculous memory. >> reporter: his memory allows him to take snapshots of the opponent's plays focused especially on the defense. >> try to figure out what is this defensive coordinator thinking? how is he going to react? hopefully at some point be it the second quarter, third quarter, we can be thinking two steps ahead. >> reporter: mcfadden started jotting down plays and giving his coaches the intel during the 2011 season opener against san jose state. a game during quarterback andrew luck's senior year which the cardinal won 67-3. >> it's like chess. you might not be thinking about one move ahead, you want to think about five, six moves ahead. >> reporter: mcfadden distances himself from taking any sort of credit but his memory made the difference later this season against the washington huskies. >> he's off to the races, and

from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning, san francisco. some of these folks might be running a little faster this morning as part of the men's 10k because it is chilly and they're going to want to warm up. thanks for joining us this morning. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda, who has a look at that complete forecast. >> and a lot of blue on the map this morning. we've got some lows, 30s around the north bay, and some mid-30s south of downtown san jose. san francisco relatively speaking not that bad, 48 degrees right now, and you will see a little patchy fog around san francisco. as we head towards the afternoon, we should see temperatures climbing into the low 60s today. still a few lingering clouds closer to san francisco and then as we get back into the workweek, we'll be tracking a few changes. today no worries about rain but as we head towards the middle part of the week, that system off to the west, you see the

unnecessary and rather sad chapter. >> if the interim deal holds with iran, the u.s. and its partners will negotiate final stage agreements to ensure iran does not build nuclear weapons. it is called the knock outgame and it works like this. mobs of young people approach an unsuspecting person. without words or warning randomly sucker punch them for fun. police in new york have arrested four people in connection to the knockout game. new york city police say there have been seven other incidents in the region targeting jewish people. the latest attack happened in brooklyn, though this violent trend is spreading across the country skyrocketing in popularity thanks to people bragging about it on the internet. police in new haven, connecticut, say six people have been attacked in the same way. none of those six people suffered serious injuries, but officials say they have deployed more police officers to the area where many of these attacks have

happened. >> by all means necessary we stop this dead in its tracks, which is what we're going to do. we're going to find these people and we're going to stop them dead in their tracks. >> new haven investigators believe the six cases are related and that the same individuals may have committed the crimes. baggage fees and paying for leg room are just two complaints from airline passengers, and now there may be another annoyance. passengers may soon be able to talk on their cell phones once above 10,000 feet. now, this is under consideration now that the fcc has loosened restrictions on using electronic devices during landing and takeoff, but the people we talked with had mixed reactions to it. >> i want to read a book, i want owe work on my computer. i don't necessarily want to hear what you had for dinner. >> yes, would love it, as long as everybody keeps their tone down. >> that's not going to happen, sir. flight attendants and others have expressed concerns about electronic interference saying cell phone use could become a safety issue during flight. the fcc will look at the

proposal next month. there will be a big public hearing part to this debate as well. what's your vote? okay. boeing is telling airlines there's a risk of engine icing on some of the newer place. the problems are on the 747-8 and the 787 dreamliner with engines made by general electric. airlines affected are unites, lufthansa, and air india. they recommend the planes avoid flying near thunderstorms that could contain ice crystals. the company is working on a fix. still ahead on "today in the bay," it was a record-breaking day at the 116th big game. unfortunately for cal, it was stanford who was rewriting the record books. and need some christmas shopping help? we'll give you a look at some of the new gaming systems for the gamer in your life. good morning nelly! woah.

the bay." >> good morning, oakland. we are looking live at the oracle arena where the warriors suffered a disappointing loss to the trail blazers last night. the 116th big game will go down to the history books but not how cal might have looked. stanford mohosting cal for the right to have that stanford ax. quarterback kevin hogan threw five touchdown passes but was upstaged by receiver ty montgomery who scored five touchdowns with only touching the ball seven times. and all of that in just the first half. stanford crushed cal, 63-13. records were set for most points scored by one team as well as the biggest margin of victory. the cardinal improved to 9-2 on the season. the bears finish with 11 losses, the worst record in school history. cal did not win a conference game this season.

you are watching "today in the bay." >> good morning to you. looking live at some of the fog in the distance, and we see the transamerica building pretty as a picture this morning. this is a judge who is a gay man in a long-term relationship, but the question is why did he not recuse himself from the case? the bay area judge who sparked the supreme court ruling on gay marriage give us an exclusive glimpse into that ruling and his own life. raj mathai has the interview with retired federal judge vaughn walker. >> reporter: he's hailed by the gay community, respected by the supreme court, and yet

criticized by many. but on the 22nd floor of his downtown san francisco office, there is no longer a spotlight. instead, a view. recently retired from the federal bench, judge vaughn walker settles into his new life shortly after his old wife was portrayed by marylandhollywood'g man. >> i would urge you to answer the questions directly. >> looking at you now, i don't see too much of brad pitt in you. >> oh, i'm hurt that you say that. >> reporter: you're more handsome than brad pitt. >> i was fishing for that i guess. >> reporter: 21 years and nearly 8,000 cases, walker was on the verge of retiring in 2010 but not before the one case that would define his career. prop 8 issue came across your desk and i'm going to clean it up for tv purposes but i believe it was an, oh, blank moment for you. you can fill in the blanks if you'd like. >> well, there was an oh, blank,

moment but that's a country expression. as a country boy, i used it. >> reporter: do you embrace your ho role in the history of all this now? >> do i embrace it? well, it was what it was. the case was dealt to me right off the wheel, purely at random, and it obviously was an important case. i do think in retrospect that the decision to conduct a trial was the right decision because it brought forth issues and brought forth facts in a way that could never have been brought forth in just an appellate type proceeding. >> and you were in the center of that. when we look back on it, whether it's months ago or years ago in the future, your name will be linked to it. >> well, i had the best seat in the house. let's put it that way. >> reporter: this issue got personal. were you disheartened when your

own same-sex relationship came up in this as an issue? >> not really disheartened. i was surprised in this way. it was quite widely known and, indeed, it was publicized during the trial itself and the proponents of proposition 8 said they were not going to raise the issue. well, i figured that was their public position and they would stick to it, but when the judgment went against them, they decided to change their mind and raise it. >> reporter: were you surprised? >> not really surprised. >> reporter: a bit of a hail mary for them. >> it was a bit of a hail mary, of course, and it never is a good thing to try to disqualify the judge after you have lost. >> reporter: do you ever have serious thoughts of recusing yourself from this and why didn't you? >> well, i didn't for at least a couple reasons. number one, i didn't want to leave the impression that is gay

and good morning to you. off to a chilly start around the bay area. most of us waking up to the upper 30s and low 40s outside right now. still some 30s up around the north bay and near santa rosa and oakland 41 degrees as we take a live look at the oakland coliseum. looks like some of the tailgating off to an early start. temperatures as we go through the game in the low 60s for the afternoon today. the folks at those barbecues are probably trying to keep warm as the temperatures have cooled down into the low 40s, even close to downtown oakland this morning. now, there's not much wind, a slight offshore breeze, which is helping to pump in some fog into fairfield and over the next couple mornings in the north and east bay valleys, you may notice some fog spilling in from the sacramento valley and sacramento area. it could be drifting in from the east if that wind is slightly

offshore. the wind speed not as gusty as yesterday. no red flag warnings for the higher hills. winds expected to stay at 5 to 15 miles per hour for the afternoon. cold temperatures continue. santa rosa, napa, and fairfield, cold enough for patchy frost this morning. 38 in livermore and some 30s south of san jose. we'll see the temperatures recovering as we go through the afternoon but much colder this morning compared to 24 hours ago because the winds have backed off. the winds had mixed down some warmer air aloft down to sea level. not the case this morning. without those winds temperatures have really bottomed out in the north bay. some of the changes we will see as we approach the middle part of the week will be the system that is in the gulf of alaska, a colder and not as wet of a system as we saw last week. that is going to be on the approach as we approach wednesday and thursday. for the first half of the week, we will see increasing clouds out of this, but probably no rain, so now it looks like maybe towards wednesday night and early thursday. so the next chance of rain as we

watch that all important wednesday getaway commute for your holiday plans starting to look a little better now for wednesday. you can see the clouds on the increase, but the showers holding offshore until we get into thanksgiving day. looks like the south bay and the south coast seeing the best bet of showers and that system will continue to move out towards southern california as we head towards friday and saturday. you can see some of the changes right there on your seven-day forecast with those clouds spilling in for the middle part of the week. in the ponorth bay, chilly star. should finish around the mid-60s. oakland, 64. tri-valley temperatures in the low 60s, but could turn a little bit cooler as that easterly wind brings in some fog over the next couple mornings and a few other spots around the bay area you can see around san francisco, the low 60s in the forecast. the peninsula, low to mid-60s. and san jose 65 degrees. a few other spots in and around the south bay, we'll show you around willow glen, 64 degrees. campbell, 64 as well. almaden valley around 67. for the coast today, mostly
