it's going to be wet and cold. we have every kind of weather other than locusts is our big problem. over 200 million people. you can see winter storm warnings. we have winter storm weather advisories, winter storm watches and right now you'll see we've got everything on the map. we've got snow up to the north. we have an icy mix. heavy thunderstorms now making their way through the southeast. this storm system will start getting itself together pushing up through the southeast later this afternoo heavy rain spreading up to the northeast later today by 1:00 to 2:00 this afternoon. overnight tonight you can see the colder air wrapping in so we're looking at snow. wind gusts of over 50 miles per hour. and wednesday it all lifts up. the storm winds will continue along with the snow and the lake effect. we're talking about generally anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of rain from atlanta up into the mid-atlantic coast.

you're going to be driving from the west to the east coast, look at this along i-90 along i-81 into i-80 we're talking about anywhere from 3 inches up to a foot of snow. it's going to make for a real miserable drive. we're going to be talking about the wind which is are going to be ferocious and may have an impact on the thanksgiving day parade. >> we'll be in the 50s tomorrow and back down to the 30s for that parade day. >> this is coming at the worst possible time with all of this thanksgiving travel. more delays and cancellations at the airport. tom costello is one of the nation's busiest in atlanta. what's the situation there. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning. in fact, cold and wet describes it here but it's 34 degrees. it is not sleet. it is not ice. it's just rain right now. this is the busiest airport in the world. 63 million people coming through atlanta airport. it's going to be critical to see

how this airport handles all of this through the next days. take a look at this camera. we'll be looking at the depart stats here in atlanta. so far we're off to a good start. no cancellations or delays. we're going to be watching that closely throughout the day. we also want to check flight aware.com's misery map. this is a very useful interactive tool on airport delays and cancellations. so in addition to atlanta this morning we're also watching the washington airports and their main routes and new york city and their main routes and boston logan and it's main routes. already showing creeping red today. in memphis they're showing significant delays already this morning. all of this critical to watch as we start to see how the storm effects the ohio valley, especially and the appalachian spine. those smaller airports could feel the pinch. also watching all of this, the american airline's dispatch

center in dallas. about 1,000 cancellations in total at dfw and that dispatch center watches all weather across the country. they have a very close eye on all of this. it is rain. in some areas it will be sleet. it will be high winds and then the potential for some snow in some remote areas over the next 48 hours or so and of course atlanta being the joke point for the entire country being the biggest airport. this airport is going to be very much in the thick of it. guys back to you. >> tom costello, thank you very much. appreciate it. in the meantime, nearly a year after the tragedy at sandy hook elementary school in connecticut we have the most comprehensive report yet on that shooting. good morning. >> good morning, matt. the report by the connecticut department of criminal justice gives a moment by moment account of the shooting and a detailed look at the troubled look at the life of gunman adam lanza. the only question it doesn't answer is why. >> reporter: the report gives the best insight to the

20-year-old man that perpetrated the worst school shooting in history. it confirms adam lanza acted alone. the entire event ended with the gunman's suicide. lanza blasted his way into the school with his rifle, a walking arsenal he carried two pistols and fired 154 the more than 300 rounds of ammunition he carried. inside his home, investigators found his first victim, his mother nancy, shot in her bed with a rifle t. report states lanza had significant mental health issues that effected his ability to live a normal life and interact with others. he didn't leave his home three months prior to the shooting. garbage bags were taped over the window and his computer shows a reoccupation with mass murders including school shootings. he refused to take his

medication and therapy but no one saw violent tendencies. he was eventually home schooled. lanza's mother was concerned about him. he would only communicate by e-mail though they were living in the same house. though nancy lanza was planning to buy her son a new pistol for christmas even though he disliked christmas and refused to put up a tree. his daughter was one of six adults killed along with 20 children. he read most of the report but chooses to remember lauren's bravery rather than learn any more about her killer. >> i'm proud of my daughter that she stood there in front of 15 little kids and took the bullets. that is amazing. i'm very proud of her. >> the full report that will be released later is several thousand pages long but he said

he won't be looking for it. he wants to move ahead remembering, instead, all the good things about his daughter's life. >> all right. thanks. our thought with the people in sandy hook and that area because that anniversary is coming up. thanks for your report. >> thank you. we'll move overseas now. natalie skovriis covering a meen afghanistan that has gotten tense. >> it has. it will would keep troops in afghanistan through 2014 is in jeopardy after a meeting between susan rice and the afghan president. nbc's chief foreign correspondence richard engle joins us from afghanistan with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. this is highly significant for the future of america's longest war and the future of afghanistan. susan rice was on this outpost meeting with u.s. commanders and then went to kabul for a dinner with president karzi.

the dinner didn't go well. the united states has already said it is willing to commit annually billions of dollars to the afghan economy to support the afghan security forces and potentially keep thousands of troops in this country after 2014. but karzi put new conditions. he said he won't sign the deal, at least not yet. he wants washington to help broker a deal with the taliban and said he won't sign it if a single american soldier enters another afghan home. this deal is in jeopardy and could mean no more american troops in afghanistan after 2014, natalie. >> tough situation on going there. richard engle, thank you so much. new clashes broke out monday night in ukraine's capitol between demonstrators and riot police. it came minutes after ukraine's president took to the air waves to explain his decision to reject trade pacts with the european union which he says was

case of rape involving high school football players in stuebenville ohio. here's john yang with the story. >> reporter: the attorney general announced four new indictments following an inquiry of a cover up of the rape of a 16-year-old. >> we're trying to hold adults accountable. that's what this is about. >> reporter: the school superintendent michael mcvey faces the most serious charges. felony counts of obstructing justice and tampering with evidence. the high school coach stands charged with failing to report child abuse. former volunteer assistant coach is charged with allowing underage drinking. and the principal is charged with failing to report child abuse but that's from an earlier accusation of rape of a

14-year-old which came to light after the high profile accusations. >> this began with a rape of a 16-year-old girl. a horrible crime of violence. but it also represents blurred, stretched and distorted boundaries of right and wrong. >> reporter: in march, two 17-year-old star high school football players were convicted of the rape. protestors said officials were trying to protect the city's beloved high school football team known as big red. late monday the stuebenville cool board put them on paid administrative leave. efforts to reach all three indicted in connection with the case were unsuccessful. at his news conference, he had a stern message for parents and educators. >> it's up to the adults to set boundaries. it's up to the adults to teach the kids right from wrong. >> reporter: a message he said applies not only to the ohio river city of stubenville but

all across the country. for today, john yang, nbc news, chicago. let's turn to tamron who is in the orange room for carson. she has new details on a story that got a lot of attention online. >> in fact, it's one of the most read stories on today.com. the new jersey waitress dana morales was expected a tip after serving a family of four last week. except she didn't receive one because she was a lesbian. donations came pouring in with people that wanted to support her but now the family claims they did leave a tip and they are disputing her story. >> reporter: it was a story that made national headlines. she claims a new jersey family denied her a tip earlier this month crossing out the tip amount space and writing i'm sorry because i cannot tip because i do not agree with your life style and how you live your

life. now a couple that claims that was their bill says they did not write that message and they did leave a tip, wnbc interviewed the couple that asked that their faces not be shown. they say their customer copy of the check proves morales version of the story doesn't end up. >> 100% you know that's your check? >> yeah, i can tell it's my name under the fuzzed out name. >> both copies of the check have the same date and time stamp but the totals are different. the couple says they left an $18 tip and even provide wnbc with the credit card stages showing the charges but morales is sticking with her story. >> they said it's possible you made this up because this isn't their handwriting and this isn't how they left the check. >> that's not my handwriting. i don't know, again. i don't know. >> so morales says she is donating most of the money she received to the wounded warrior fund and here, again, these are the receipts here.

with gold medal skier bode miller. he is hoping to compete in sochi but now he is in a fight for custody of his infant son. nbc's stephanie gosk has details on that. >> reporter: olympic skier bode miller clunched his nine month old nate as he walked into family court in new york city. >> what do you expect today? >> i hope the judge makes the right decision. >> reporter: but it was the child's mother she walked without the baby she calls sam. granted temporary custody as a complicated legal battle unfolds. the couple dated in california over a year ago when mckenna a former marine and firefighter, became pregnant. she claims the skier wanted nothing to do with the baby sending her a text that said you made this choice against my wish. seven months pregnant, the 27-year-old moved to new york city and enrolled in columbia university. when the baby was born, both parents fought for custody. the new york court called mckenna reprehensible for moving to the east coast while

pregnant. the court finding it unjustifiable conduct. a california family court was given jurisdiction. a controversial decision. >> when she moved to new york and the baby being born in new york, the jurisdiction certainly should be in new york. and what the family court judge did was he seeded jurisdiction to california. >> reporter: miller was granted custody. the downhill skier and his new wife volleyball player morgan beck regularly posted pictures of the baby but mckenna appealed the original ruling that sent the case to california and won. a panel of judges concluded she had every right to move to new york city while pregnant. the women's rights groups that backed her worried the case would set legal precedent for all pregnant women. >> the issue is whether a woman because she has exercised her fundamental rights to travel, to get an education can be denied access to a court of proper jurisdiction.

that she can be called a kidnapper. >> reporter: next month, both parents will be in court fighting for custody. their baby still caught in the middle. for "today," stephanie gosk, nbc news, new york. lisa bloom is today's legal analyst. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> let's talk with the simple idea of jurisdiction. mckenna moved to new york while she was pregnant. she had this baby here in new york. why would a new york family court seed jurisdiction to a california court? >> the lower court ruling from that judge is really disturbing. it says that she was irresponsible and reprehensible for appropriating the baby moving when she was pregnant and that the california court where bode miller already filed a case would have jurisdiction. as we know, that's now been overturned. jurisdiction is normally where the baby is born. >> let's go back to the statement you just eluded to. this new york court in issuing this decision on jurisdiction said that miss mcken was irresponsible and her actions

were reprehensible. women's group say that will set this back decades. give me your take on this. >> that's right. pregnant women don't have any legal obligation to get permission from the father of their baby before they travel. they have the same constitutional right to autonomy to move state-to-state as they wish. in this case, this is a very sympathetic young woman. she got a full scholarship to an ivy league university and she moved to new york for that purpose. >> but on the other hand, bode miller is the father of this child. does a court have, i guess, the requirement of protecting his father's rights location-wise and geographically. >> not to the extent of controlling where she lives. he certainly has the right and he probably will get joint custody to the child. that's how i expect this will turn out. he has the right to visit his child and see his child as much as possible. what he does not have is the right to control where the mother lives and especially when she is pregnant and that is when she moved. >> this case is getting a lot of attention because bode miller is

a high profile athlete. lisa, how will what happens in this case impact other cases like it around the country? >> well, it's already spawned a court of appeals decision in new york. new york is a state that typically sets precedent for many other states. people look to the decisions in new york. i think this is an important ruling for the rights of pregnant women. >> lisa bloom, thanks for your opinions on this. i appreciate it. >> thank you. let's turn to al who is mr. busy with all the weather. >> that's right. we have been talking about rain and snow and we're also concerned about ice out of this system. you can already see the heavy showers and the heavy thunderstorms but this pink to purplish is icing and that's going to be a big, big problem. in fact, you can see rainfall amounts anywhere from up to four to five inches in the southeast. you get into the northeast from central new york into western new york and pennsylvania, anywhere from 6 inches of snow

>> it's a good time to try to save you money at home. we have thanksgiving coming up and black friday and cyber monday. the crooks are out there looking to pounce. >> you identified three schemes. the first has to do with gift cards. how does it work. >> gift cards, hugely popular this year. retailers expect 80% of us will buy gift cards. there's this scam i've not even heard about before. what thieves do is -- when you go to the store all the gift cards are sitting on the counter for you to buy. here's the gift card. what the thieves are doing is going up to the counter and flipping the gift card around and you'll see right here most of them have a scratch box, a scratch off box right here. there's a code under there for activation. the thieves are scratching it off like that and writing down the codes for a lot of these cards, putting them back on the wrack. then you buy it. you're so nice, you give it to me. i buy it. i activate the card and the thieves are calling the 100 number.

they're going online to find out when they're bought and activated and when they are they're draining the money out of it and when they do there's nothing left. >> right under the nose of the cashiers. >> right. here's the take away for you. most of us don't do that. flip it around and see if the code is scratched off. ask for the cards from behind the counter. and the third one, include a gift receipt when you give a gift card so you can get it replaced. >> your next scam, package theft. >> this is one we told you about before. it happened from seattle to houston to san diego and the video was interesting. what happens is police believe these thieves follow around delivery trucks into neighborhoods. when they leave you a package, your christmas present, the thieves run up and take the package away before you get home. easy ways to protect yourself from this. here's the take away on it. require a signature when you fill out that package form so the thief can't get to it.

they won't deliver it. if you're not going to be home, do this. have the package sent to the nearest service location. >> following the delivery truck, that's despicable. >> retailer websites. >> you're an online shopper so this effects you a lot. >> they are sophisticated. a growing problem. federal authorities shutdown 1500 counterfeit websites in the past year alone. this is a problem that's growing. i brought a couple of examples for you. beats by dr. dre. >> we love beats. >> matt loves beats. it's a popular holiday item. this is real website on your screen right now. now let's show you the fake one. it looks the same. >> how do you get to it? you search it. >> you google t it. it gives you a bad sighte. the colors are the same. the same with tiffanys. >> i've never seen this website before. >> you've never been here.

let me show you the fake one. same colors. same kind of jewelry. same writing and logo and everything. what you want to do on these is -- and by the way, what you want to do is look for the counterfeit sites by spelling errors. they'll often make that mistake and look for the customers service phone number on these websites. call it and say am i on the real website. >> couldn't they just copy this customer service from the real one? >> but then you're going to call it and they can't fake that. if you get scammed much easier to contest the charges and of course check for those errors. >> if you happen to buy something on one of these false websites, if you used your credit card you could get your money back. >> much easier to fight the charges. >> so much to worry about. >> happy holidays. >> you too. >> a controversial industry, young women selling their eggs to couples in need. up next, martha stewart is in the orange room and she'll

stretching from the deep south to new england. nbc's dylan dryer is in virginia with the very latest. dylan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. i walked outside this morning in wistful virginia, about an hour west of roanoke, virginia, and everything was covered in ice. we had this freezing rain coming down since midnight and the thing with freezing rain, it falls like rain, sounds like rain and looks like rain until it freezes on contact with everything it touches. the good news around here, though, the major roads were not covered in ice. but it was the overpasses and the bridges. so we had reports of about 40 crashes and several spinouts with cars abandoned on the side of the roads. none of those were considered major. they were pretty minor injuries. with some of those crashes. but here in wisville, this is kind of the same storm system moving through texas and tennessee yesterday and it did produce a lot of ice in the tennessee area along with the snow and the sleet. but as this continues to move

eastward it is going to turn into more of a rain and a wind event up and down the east coast. tomorrow for the biggest travel day leading up to thanksgiving. natalie? >> all right. goo going to be a big dress. dylan dryer in virginia, thank you. the most comprehensive report yet on the sandy hook school massacre does not provide any clear motive for the killing of 20 children and six staff members. the report does contain photos of the shattered glass where 20-year-old adam lanza shot his way into the connecticut school last december. there are also pictures of the three weapons he carried as he fired more than 150 shots. the report by the state department of criminal justice said lanza had significant mental issues but refused medicine and therapy. his computer held evidence of an obsession with mass shootings. the fda is investigating whether some morning after pills need a label change. this comes after the european maker of the emergency contra septive reported that it does not work well in women who weigh

a good tuesday morning to you. 8:26. the naacp wants to force san jose state students acuted every accused of a hate crime to face harsher felony charges. the civil rights organization also called for the district attorney's office to charge the students with false imprisonment. students say the school's president ignored their concerns about the treatment of african-american students at san jose state. santa clara county district attorney jeff rosen acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations, but stood by the misdemeanor charges. let's check that morning commute with mike now. how is it looking out there? >> overall the bay area seeing a lighter volume of traffic this week, but look at oak willed. 808 is slowing down north from the coliseum up into downtown. we had an earlier stall on a

richard dreyfuss is shining a light on bipolar disorder. thank you for being here. how are you doing? >> how are you? >> i'm good. you talk about your childhood and say you went through a huge portion of your life extremely happy going from thrill to thrill in a manic state. >> i didn't know it was a manic state. i just thought i was really happy and everything that was bad i turned to good. >> how did you do that? i think a lot of people would love advice on that. >> well, i was in love with a girl for 20 years and she wasn't in love with me. so i turned that loss into romeo and juliet and i was in love with the loss. >> you felt normal. did the people around you think you were behaving normally?

>> most of the time, yes. but then every once in awhile when i was talking i would find myself getting up and talking louder and faster and louder and faster until my friends would say okay, okay. let's get the big circus cables and throw them around his ankles and pull him gently back to earth. >> at what stage in your life did you receive a diagnosis? somebody put a label on what you were living with? >> that experience of jumping out of my chair and talking and talking well was not in my control. so when i was about 19 i went to therapy. which is a misnamed thing. she should have called it counselling because therapy shares the dea scares the death out of people. >> did it shock you or did you like finally having a reason for some of your behavior? >> it took away all of my guilt

because i found out that it wasn't my behavior, it was something i was born with. so i didn't feel shame or guilt, it's like being ashamed that you have -- you're 5'6" or something. it's just part of me. so it took away that. and i hadn't felt any depression except for the depression that you feel the night before a test when you haven't read the book. >> right. >> that i felt. other than that, nothing. >> in reading about you, one thing jumped out at me. there was a time you were on a medication and it was working extremely well for you and the company that made the medication stopped making it. >> yes. >> i can only imagine the anxiety that would create. >> i remember because they didn't tell anyone that for the last three years the pharmacists had been getting it out of ware houses and then one day they said they didn't make it anymore. so i wrote the head of the company, the most sincere letter

he has ever gotten and he called me and he said i know we have left 3,000 people hanging in midair but there was just no profit in it. and i said do you hear what you're saying? and that was that. it was gone. >> you've since found, it took awhile i know, a medication or a combination that works for you. any side effects of those medications? >> no. >> i'll set them up, you kick them through. what do you want people to know? you talk about stigma. you say there shouldn't even be the word stigma associated with this. >> stigma is silly. stigma is stupid. stigma is what other people think about you and i first of all don't know anyone who is normal. everyone has something. and i come from hollywood, so no one even argues the point. so stigma is a word that should be kicked away and shame and guilt because it's a condition.

and what they should do is do more research, of which right now there is very little, and the organization that brought me here is called -- it's called the depression research foundation and they do innovative really cutting edge stuff. but for the most part there's no research going on by the government or anybody and so i'm personally not in a hurry to get rid of my condition but most people are. >> but the fact that you're speaking out about it is going to do a lot of good for a lot of people. >> or it's going to be very bad because i might be known as the actor for a mental illness in which case i'll never work again. >> i doubt it. richard dreyfuss, it's always good to have you here. thank you for being so frank. >> up next, jane pauly on a new way to live for the 50-plus set. but first, this is "today" on

back at 8:41 with our series life reimagined today. jane pauley is working with aarp that produced these reports. >> good morning, savannah. as thanksgiving nears we think about home. well, some bombers are changing the meaning of home. this story from pittsburgh is about three women, one house, and a lifestyle reimagined. >> hello. >> hey, jane. >> reporter: this is jane's house and also louise and karen. >> who really owns the house? >> all three of us. >> whose name is on the mortgage? >> all of us. >> reporter: pooling their money they bought a large brick house. >> oh, i'm in love. >> reporter: the patio, living room and dining room are common

areas for eating, reading, and enjoying each other's company and they have for nine years. it was karen's idea. she was still in her 50s but thinking ahead. >> i had just finished renovating a really beautiful little white cottage that i loved, but i began thinking when i was in my 70s, retired, that would be a rather solitary and perhaps lonely way to live. >> reporter: but it was such a good idea, they decided, why wait? >> we could save so much money, have a really fun time and support each other living in a little community. >> why not now? >> why not now? >> i have saved way more for retirement than i would have been able to do if i were still living alone. >> so none of you were then retired. >> oh, we're not retired. >> gene is a registered no, sir. karen a corporate consultant. louise is a clinical

psychologist. she has the biggest room because she didn't need an office. gene has a suite on the third floor and karen's two rooms are separated by a bath. >> end table, coffee table, the corner cupboard, the antique table back there. this is my lamp and all the pottery is mine. >> that painting we actually bought together. >> reporter: but blending three households wasn't as easy as it looks. they have written a how-to book. >> what if somebody wants to leave? what if you want somebody to leave? >> we have it covered legally. >> what happens if one of you died? >> we each have life insurance policy with the other two as the beneficiaries. we knew we had to be prudent. so we did cover all the ugly possibilities we could think of. >> no guest will stay longer than seven consecutive nights or more than 21 total days in a

>> announcer: from nbc news, this is today's take with al roker, natalie morales, and willie geist. live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. and welcome to today on this tuesday morning, november 26th, 2013. another great crowd outside on the plaza this morning. i'm willie geist along with al roker and natalie morales. a lot of people in town to see the parade. >> yes. >> starting to get a little worried about the weather on parade day. >> well, we have to get to parade day first. tomorrow is going to be a huge, huge travel day. we're going to detail it coming up. but the big thing i'm concerned about right now there's a huge icing area that may kick in from

interior parts of new york all the way down and a quarter of an inch of ice or so. that's going to make roads rough. western new york, western pennsylvania heavy snow and along the coast we're talking about a lot of rain. so major hubs are going to be effected tomorrow. today on into tomorrow. >> a lot of people are trying to get out early. whether today or early tomorrow. storm hit new york and threatens to put a damper on the macy's thanksgiving day parade. we don't know yet but they'll decide on thursday morning. >> well, winds have to be -- sustained winds have to be 23 miles per hour or higher. wind gusts of 34 miles per hour to ground the balloons. i think the winds are going to stay below that threshold and for safety sake even if they don't make that threshold they may bring the balloons lower but they'll make a determination on site thursday morning. >> interesting that ray kelly, the new york police commissioner was saying they were going to have one police officer per balloon to be able to make sure

that -- there are 16 balloons in the parade to make sure they're all covered and have control assuming they get to be hoisted. >> let's hope they fly low. a couple of airlines are stepping up, delta, u.s. airlines, jet blue have to fly through the region. >> might want to check the fine print. >> the big problem is all the airlines are flying if not 100% full, pretty close to it. so trying to get on flight is really going to be an issue. it's interesting. >> we'll have some of the maps coming up later. we'll stay on this for you. a lot of people are traveling today and tomorrow. we'll be on it for you. yesterday, the president of the united states was making a speech in san francisco. he was confronted by a heckler. san francisco, usually friendly territory for the democratic president had an audience he thought of supporters. >> there's an immigration

speech. >> that's right. >> there was a man in the audience that had an outburst, was angry over the number of deportations since president obama has taken office. take a look at the exchange. >> most importantly we will live up -- most importantly we will live up -- >> families are separated -- >> most importantly we will live up to our character as a nation. >> families are separated. i need your help -- >> let me finish. no, no, he can stay there. the easy way out is to try to yell and pretend like i can do something by violating our laws. and what i'm proposing is the harder path which is to use our democratic processes to achieve the same goal that you want to achieve but it won't be as easy as just shouting. it requires us lobbying and getting it done. >> so the man was a 24-year-old immigrant from south korea. he was a graduate of cal berkeley.

he was there. they vet these crowds pretty well typically. this was a rally. >> he was right behind the president. >> right. he was speaking for a lot of people that had been detained and couldn't speak up. >> i think that the president handled it well by engaging and saying let me answer his questions and his concerns. this is the way sometimes you have to handle it. let me take it head on and make the comments i need to make but address the issue at large here which is in this case immigration. with obama care and so much focus on that, immigration has been forgotten. >> put on the back burner. >> the president's argument was i can't wave the magic wand and make this go away. but he did do that for the younger dreamers. there's a whole dialogue in there. the first lady michelle obama talking about how they celebrate the holiday season in lady's home journal on stands today. she talks about her holiday play list which includes favorites,

lela put it over the top. they wanted to make sure that another family with children would grow up and have the same memories in their house. >> she was the closer. >> bring the baby. >> she came in from the bull pen and closed it. >> she shut it down. >> that's my girl. >> but i guess the question in this is would you really shave money off the price? it's a nice thing and i would do it as well. >> if you had two very close bids. but one was maybe $10,000 less on your home but they wrote you the sweetest letter and they had beautiful kids that kind of looked like your kids, wouldn't you pick that family? >> yeah, if the difference was that slight, probably. >> yeah. it's like, yeah. >> it's nice. >> you want them to have the same memories and to know that this is a house that our family loved and we're passing it on to another family that's going to love it. >> nice. >> well, in a completely unrelated story. >> wow. >> completely unrelated. >> there was a snake on a windshield of a car. >> where is samuel l. jackson

involved in this thing. 200 million people going to be effected by this. you can see this area of purple and pink. that's the freezing rain. the icing conditions. heavy showers and thunderstorms getting together. so this is all making its way up to the north. this morning, you could see the heavy rain in the southeast. this storm is going to develop and come out of the gulf and bring a lot of moisture. you can see snow wrapping around this system. we're going to be looking at wind gusts by tomorrow morning. about 50 miles per hour. it's going to wreak havoc with the airports from washington, new york, boston, philadelphia. lake effect snow going to be setting in and, in fact, you can see basically anywhere from two to three inches of rain setting up. but we're also talking about snow. if you're thinking of driving from the east coast on into the west and upper midwest, syracuse, eerie, pennsylvania, cleveland, ohio, pittsburgh. you can be looking from three inches of snow to a foot of snow with blinding winds.

it's our annual week of thanks and giving where we highlight the work of st. jude's children's hospital. >> a young athlete that refused to let cancer keep her from following her passion. >> she was a talented gymnast when she was diagnosed with leukemia. with the right treatment and a persevering spirit she is bouncing back strong. >> kate foster spent much of her waking life in the gym. >> i was at the gym like 20 hours a week. you repeat the skills over and over and over again to get them perfect. >> between gymnastics and cross fit workouts with her family, this dynamo was a picture of health. but suddenly a mysterious illness slowed her down. >> we had her tested for all kinds of things. diabetes, mono, nothing. they couldn't find anything wrong with her. >> eventually an unexpected diagnosis. a cancer of the blood and bone marrow called myeloid leukemia. >> my initial response was no

way. this can't be. how could that happen? we thought all kinds of things could be wrong with her but cancer never entered our minds. >> when i did find out it was a cancer, i still didn't know what that meant. it just sort of seems apart from my life. >> instantly, kate traded the gym for the hospital. one month into chemotherapy and more bad news. an infection in kate's knee meant her leg would have to be amputated on the same day as her bone marrow transplant. >> actually i told them no. my parents told them no quite a few times too although in our heads we all knee it was going to happen and that is what needed to happen. it was a leg or a life. >> reporter: kate went into remission and things looked better. kate became an ambassador for cross fit and continued to exercise. but the cancer returned. >> the relapse was devastating. it was out of the blue.

we were shocked. the doctors were shocked. she had been doing so well. >> reporter: kate's families weighed their options and st. jude's won out. >> there was a study at st. jude and that's what we decided to do. going into it, what we wanted to do most of all was anything different. anything above and beyond that we hadn't done the first time since we thought we had nailed it then. >> reporter: kate took part in a clinical trial for a new medication. >> the treatment that kate got at st. jude was designed specifically for patients who get a second transplant to do another high intensity transplant is very dangerous. so we were looking at ways to give less toxic chemotherapy and still get enough leukemia to have success. >> after four months receiving treatment at st. jude, kate returned home at illinois. she began her freshman year of high school cancer free. >> it never occurred to me that i might not come back.

it was auld kind of i'm going to go back. what am i going to do when i go back? >> reporter: with the support of her family kate is back at it rebuilding her strength and standing tall as she prepares to compete once again. >> i wanted to be doing gymnastics. i wanted to be at school. i wanted to be learning. i wanted to be learning out. all of those kind of little things that you don't realize until you can't have them. >> what a great story. >> incredible girl. >> kate couldn't be here with us this morning because she and her family are on a special trip to australia that was made possible by the make a wish foundation. >> marlowe thomas is the national outreach director of st. jude's children's hospital. good to see you. >> thank you. >> thank you for this opportunity to shine a light on all the work you all do at that hospital. we love having you there every year. >> thank you. >> what would you say as we watch this story and the others you bring us every year, what's the st. jude's difference?

why do people come to this particular hospital? >> what's fascinating is she benefitted from our project. and she benefitted from that. we targeted her cancer with a brand new drug that we have never used before for aml. and it's fascinating because we can see this kind of reaction this quickly from our project. it was also interesting about st. jude that she is now in remission, thank god. and thank god she never leaves remission but we're ready. we know what we're going to do next. we're going to do a program next if this doesn't work. that's what is different about st. jude. we have it all lined up. we know exactly where we're going next. >> what difference has st. jude made in fighting childhood cancers? >> aml is a much more difficult cancer than all. a.l.l. we have a 90% survival rate.
